Front row application missing

Hi
I used to have an app called Front Row, which seems to have disappeared, it enabled me to look at photos, movies and trailers.
I have recently updated to Lion and not sure if the app disappeared at this point but, but I don't seem to be able to get it back, can anyone help?

While it doesn't come with Lion you can put it back on from Snow Leopard if you want

You don't.  Apple no longer ships Front Row... it's part of the OS... so it goes away when you upgraded.

  • Missing Front Row Application Icon

For some reason, the icon for the application has gone missing in action. I can still use cmnd+esc and front row opens up, but I can't find the "chair" - I never have really used it, but I do remember seeing the icon in the apps folder. Ideas?

Yes, it still functions with the keyboard shortcut - its odd - at one time, when I first installed Leopard, it was there in the apps folder - I recall seeing it and not knowing what it was (relatively new to mac) - anyway, recently I wanted to explore using it a bit, and couldn't find it, thinking I was going insane -then I read about the shortcut, and it was working - but, no icon...

  • How do I restore front row application?

I lost the front row movie application somehow on both my iMac and Macbook pro. Both have the latest Lion OS running. What can I do to get them back?

The best hack to get Frontrow working with Lion appears to be this one:

  • Front Row is missing

Who can tell me how to get front row back.. the remote or command-esc won't open it.
I think I lost it after reinstalling Mac OS X (on the advice of the apple helpline, to solve some problems I had)
    Thanks

If you re-install Mac OS X, then you might lose Front Row. After you startup and log in, you should be able to put your Mac OS X install disk in the drive and you'll see an "Install Bundled Software Only" option. When you get to the Installation Type window, you should be able to customize the installation and uncheck everything except Front Row.

  • Front Row won't turn on.

The menu button nor the keyboard shortcut will bring up front row [ie nothing happens]. The remote operates itunes and the computer volume as it should.
I tried to find some articles about this, but could find none.
    Thanks for yr help.

That's okay, it's like that on my MacBook as well. There was never a "real" Front Row application. There is a launcher file living in the Applications folder that looks like a movie theater chair. But all that icon does is tell the application buried in the /System/Library/CoreServices/ folder to open. If your Front Row application is living in the /System/ folder then you should be able to launch it by pressing command-esc (escape) on the keyboard. You should also still be able to open it by pressing the menu button on the Apple remote. If neither of those options work and the launcher application that lives in the main /Applications/ folder is missing, you may need to extract the Front Row style application launcher from the install disk.

  • Can I use Front Row with macMini (PowerPC)?

Is Front Row compatible with macMini PowerPC version and Tiger? Or does it need Intel?

Do you think that I can successfully emulate an Apple TV by setting up my MacMini (PowerPC) with a third party (someone suggested Keyspan) remote, Front Row application, and using Front Row to access iTunes music, TV shows, and videos (same as APple TV),and using Safari to access .mac web gallery (now available on Apple TV2)? The interface on the AppleTV is probably more elegant and seamless, but really, I could access the same content with the macMini, right? Also YouTube videos and Picasa photos can also be accessed via Safari. It will just look and feel more like a computer if I use Safari, vs a Media Centre! Do you think it's worth giving a try?

  • Does Front Row update playcount (and other attrbutes) in iTunes?

Excuse this question please which I could theoretically test myself, just don't have the resources at hand right now to try it out:
As I understand FR under Tiger uses iTunes to play music. So logically any smart playlists based on 'last played' or 'playcount' attributes will stay up to date?
However, since the new FR (Leopard) handles everything itself my question is, will it also update these iTunes attributes?
My previous quick test, seemed to suggest not. Pretty annoying cos I'm planning to use a MacMini as a mediacenter, connected to the TV and it seems to defeat the object of Front Row if I end up having to play music from iTunes in order to fully utilise my smart playlists.
    Cheers,
    Rich
PS And why do I have Front Row 1.0 installed on a brand new 10.5 iMac? I thought the Leopard version was FR 2.0 ?

...still don't umderstand why it's version 1.0 though!
The "Front Row" that is in your Applications folder may be "version 1.0" but it's really only a shortcut to the actual Front Row application that's inside your /System/Library/CoreServices/ folder. That's the application that is version 2 now and is actually displaying on your screen. I think Apple added this shortcut for people who don't have an Apple remote so it's easier to open Front Row.

  • Mountain Lion hostile to Front Row?

Mounting Lion seems hostile to Front Row, which would still work under Lion, with some persuasion.
It's all well and good to say it's been discontinued…
Why sell Mac Mini with HDMI and discontinue Front Row ? What are Apple customers expected to use?
Mounting Lion upgrade process lets Front Row application through.
Front Row doesn't even attempt to launch, as if it's being blocked deliberately.
If there a fix or terminal option to get Front Row working again, could someone please let us know. It's not like there's any Apple replacement.
Or any other company for that matter. And no, Plex is hopless, it ignores folder structure, it's useless to me. Put an alias in your Movie's folder and you can see anything you want in Front Row.
    Simple, just works, just abandoned.
    Off to apple.com/feedback, now.

Thanks, I'll answer the "try Plex, it's great" suggestion, only once.
I have installed Plex, but can't wait to remove it. It's too complex and dumb. Front Row is simple and flexible and doesn't require me to run a server or nominate folders separately, just to make it useable. Front Row lets me dig around folders as I create them and is generally clean/simple and all I need.
When I want Hollywood movie meta data assigned to budgie videos from YouTube, I'll be singing the praises of Plex all over the internet. If that's cataloguing, I can live without it. I have tonnes of files, they're -catalogued- into folders. Until Apple loses the plot completely and scraps the file system, I'm safe from meddling by any number of Apps (which come and go over time).
The remote seems to work OK with Plex without Buddy, better than iTunes actually. Somebody must have fixed iTunes to stop responding to the remote, as well. Charming.
Merely deleting Front Row from Lion, apparently wasn't bloody-minded enough, Mountain Lion seems to single out Front Row - gives no error when you launch it, just refuses to let it run. An awful lot of hostility to what appears to be a simple skin for QuickTime.
How much trouble would it be for Apple to Open Source Front Row and let those that want it, run it?

  • Front Row Installer

Recently I crashed my system when I messing around with terminal trying to enable smart card login on my Intel iMac.
I had to reinstall the OS (archive install) and during the reinstall process the installer hangs up on the last step (some iWeb script on disc 2). I attempted this three more times and the same thing always happens. The second disc would never finish with the install. I finally had to reinstall just the basic system on disc 1 and not install any of the software on disc 2 for the installer to finish. The process only took me 23 hours!
Everything is working fine now and I didn't lose any of my files, but now front row is missing. I've looked all over the web for some kind of front row installer but I can't find one.
Does anyone know if Apple still publishes the Front Row installer (1.0) and/or why is the second disc of the system installer always hanging up?
Any comments or help would be much appreciated. Thank you.
iMac (intel) 20 inch   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I don't know where is the Front Row Installer, but you could try to find it in the second CD, and if you find it, try to install it alone.
This kind of problem is usually caused by dirty or damaged media.
Is there anything logged in Console.ap when you try to install something on the second CD ?
    Why reward points ?

  • Front Row appears installed but also not installed!

I recently upgraded to leopard and am having problems with Front Row. It appears in my applications but when I click on it nothing appears to happen. So I tried to update it and got a message along the lines of "to install this update you need Front Row installed". Has anyone got any suggestions on how to resolve this?

That is not the correct size for the Front Row application. Before you go any further, what kind of troubleshooting have you already done? You'll want to make sure your file directories are healthy and there are no other underlying problems before you proceed with re-installing Mac OS X. Make sure you backup all your important files! The next thing I'd do is put in your Mac OS X install disk, restart and hold down on the "c" key. This will startup the computer from the Mac OS X installer. You'll have to choose a language, but don't continue to install Mac OS X. Rather, choose to open the Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Run the "Repair Disk" option. Does it find any problems? Repair any problems and run the "Repair Disk" option again until no problems are found. Any problems it can't fix? You may need a more sophisticated repair utility. When you're done, quit the Disk Utility and then quit the Installer. You should restart back to your Mac after that.

  • I can't delete "Front Row".

I installed "Front Row" then I tried to erase it. I found everything of it (application, preferences, etc.) and I erased them. Now, after a month, when I start my computer, it appear ("Front Row") and I've to close it pressing "esc" key. It doesn't appear since I switch off my computer then I restart it. Thank you.

You may have to force quit the application running from the Activity Viewer/Monitor in Applications -> Utilities. Make sure it does not reappear. If it doesn't show in that application, go to Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal, widen the window full screen width, and type at the prompt:
    ps -ax
There you should find the PID for the Front Row application on the same row as the Front Row application itself.
Once you know that PID number at the prompt type:
    kill -15 PID number
If it doesn't let you kill it, try
    sudo kill -15 PID number
All commands given in the Terminal should be followed by a Return key pressing. PID number will be one number, and you should use the number itself to substitute for wherever it says PID number in the instructions above.
Once you have verified Front Row is no longer running with
    ps -ax
    Deleting it should be possible.

  • Front Row disappeared from my computer

Ok, here's the deal. I was having some problems with my optical drive so I took my iMac G5(iSight) to a Mac store. They had to reinstall Tiger, which they did, but now Front Row is no longer on my computer, even though it came with Front Row already installed on it. I stopped back and they said I could use the reinstallation disks to get it back on there, so I put in the disk, clicked on "Reinstall Bundled Software" and it went through the entire software installation process....still no Front Row. Anyone have any clue what's going on here? I gave it to a Mac Store and when I got it back, Front Row was missing. I'm just trying to get figure out how I can get it back.
    Thanks in adavance

The guy at the Mac store said that Front Row isn't a part of Tiger so he said they're not responsible...
Who was this guy? Where did you take your iMac in for service? Users of Intel-based Macs can re-install Front Row from the "bundled software" installer on the Mac OS X install disk. However, Front Row is NOT included in the "bundled software" installer for G5 iSight iMacs. Front Row is included in the Mac OS X installer for those Macs. Your technician is misinformed and used the incorrect disk to install Mac OS X. I would take your iMac back and have then use the correct disk to re-install Mac OS X. They are responsible for your copy of Front Row as it IS included with Mac OS X for your model.

  • Front Row Apple TV

Why doesn't front row function the exact same way as Apple TV. I don't have a TV to buy an Apple TV for... but I do have a large monitor that I use for everything. I would probably be buying videos from Apple were I able to buy them through Front Row.

I too am disappointed that Apple have again allowed Front Row to fall behind Apple TV. For a very brief period when Leopard was first released, it looked like they were going to get in sync.
_Things Front Row is missing that Apple TV does have_
    No YouTube support
    No Rentals
    No AirTunes support
    No remote iTunes artwork support
    No Flickr support
    No .Mac web gallery support
    No Closed Captions/Subtitles
However things are not all bad, Front Row does have the following which Apple TV does not.
    Support for VIDEO_TS folders
    Support for more video formats
The list of what Front Row does not have is however getting bigger
Personally, I have had to regard both Front Row and Apple TV as too limited, and instead (shock, horror) I use Microsoft Media Center!
    +(At least I run it on a Mac.)+
