Front Row audio through AIRTUNES

Is there a simple way to get all audio from my movies and music to play in FRONT ROW through my Airport Express (AirTunes) like it does in iTunes....
thanks

…which I believe is the problem Apple is having trouble with solving as well. With VLC Player, you can press f and g on the keyboard to insert video/audio delays to get them back into sync.

  • Front Row + Audio Streaming to Airport Express...

I purchased an airport express and have been able to successfully stream my itunes to the device. However streaming from front row seems to be a problem. Does front row support audio streaming? I would love to be able to use my apple remote to control my music using the television screen. The remote seems to be useless with itunes.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Front Row under Leopard doesn't support Airtunes streaming:

  • Use front row to control airtunes volume

is there any way to use front row (and remote) to control volume on external airtunes speakers instead of system volume? i understand how to select them, just want to know how to do volumes. thanks.

You're talking about using the volume slider within iTunes? Or using the remote to actually control the speakers?
If the former, than try the App called iRedLite. It lets you remap the remote's inputs to different functions.
If you're familiar with AppleScript you can make the up and down buttons control the volume slider.
Open Script Editor, then open the iTunes Dictionary. Find the "volume up" and "volume down" and use those in iRedLite.
This should work, hope I helped.

  • Front Row no longer works with Airtunes

May I add my voice to a retrograde step from tiger to leopard. I now no longer proudly show off front row when I play music in my bar since leopard only plays front row directed music through the imac speakers and not air tunes.

Same problem here. I hoped the issue would have been solved with the 10.5.2 update, but alas.. no.
I already posted a 'feedback', think I will do it again. Please Apple, fix this; what's Front Row worth without AirTunes?

  • Audio Problem Front Row DVD

    Hi:
Playing a DVD via front row and through a tv, the sound was going up and down, tested it with another dvd and it was the same. Could be it the cabel which is Philex SLx Gold 3.5mm jack to 2 Phono Personal Audio Lead?
BTW sound playing music through front row and through the tv speakers produces no issue
    mac mini 1.66 dc | ibook 12" | MBP 17" Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Since you're playing a DVD in stereo only (not multi-channel surround sound) with that cable, is it possible that the "downmixing" from multi-channel audio is not being handled very well? Does your DVD have an audio option for 2.0 Stereo only?

  • Is Front Row multi Region?

I have just got Front Row for my PowerBook and put one of my movie DVD's in and front row played it without asking me what region I would like to choose, As I have lived in the US, the UK and Australia I have DVD's from 3 different regions which is why in the past I have not used iDVD.
Can I start using front row for all my DVD's?
For a heads up I usually watch DVD's through my computer using VLC
    Any info would be great.

I ripped my relatively few USA and UK out of region DVDs to my hard drive using Mac the Ripper, which removes the region coding. There isn't any point in copying a commercial DVD via a DVD burner, since almost every cheap stand alone DVD Player will play any region without protest. So you only need a ripped region free copy on hard drive to play on the Mac.
Looks like Front Row on Leopard is happy enough playing an in region DVD from the actual DVD. For the ripped Video_TS files of a DVD, I found you had to put the folders into your ~/Movies folder (or make an alias to the (shared) folder they are really in). I believe you can also put the ripped DVD version on an external drive, and again use the alias trick, but haven't tried that as yet.
Still not sure how you persuade Front Row to use AirTunes to send the audio to an external sound system. But VLC doesn't do that either.

  • Mountain Lion hostile to Front Row?

Mounting Lion seems hostile to Front Row, which would still work under Lion, with some persuasion.
It's all well and good to say it's been discontinued…
Why sell Mac Mini with HDMI and discontinue Front Row ? What are Apple customers expected to use?
Mounting Lion upgrade process lets Front Row application through.
Front Row doesn't even attempt to launch, as if it's being blocked deliberately.
If there a fix or terminal option to get Front Row working again, could someone please let us know. It's not like there's any Apple replacement.
Or any other company for that matter. And no, Plex is hopless, it ignores folder structure, it's useless to me. Put an alias in your Movie's folder and you can see anything you want in Front Row.
    Simple, just works, just abandoned.
    Off to apple.com/feedback, now.

Thanks, I'll answer the "try Plex, it's great" suggestion, only once.
I have installed Plex, but can't wait to remove it. It's too complex and dumb. Front Row is simple and flexible and doesn't require me to run a server or nominate folders separately, just to make it useable. Front Row lets me dig around folders as I create them and is generally clean/simple and all I need.
When I want Hollywood movie meta data assigned to budgie videos from YouTube, I'll be singing the praises of Plex all over the internet. If that's cataloguing, I can live without it. I have tonnes of files, they're -catalogued- into folders. Until Apple loses the plot completely and scraps the file system, I'm safe from meddling by any number of Apps (which come and go over time).
The remote seems to work OK with Plex without Buddy, better than iTunes actually. Somebody must have fixed iTunes to stop responding to the remote, as well. Charming.
Merely deleting Front Row from Lion, apparently wasn't bloody-minded enough, Mountain Lion seems to single out Front Row - gives no error when you launch it, just refuses to let it run. An awful lot of hostility to what appears to be a simple skin for QuickTime.
How much trouble would it be for Apple to Open Source Front Row and let those that want it, run it?

  • Apple Remote controls iTunes, not Front Row

I've searched around for an answer to this and have had no luck. My Apple Remote is controlling iTunes - the play/pause button is playing and pausing, the up and down buttons are controlling iTunes volume, the left and right buttons are skipping tracks as expected, and the Menu button is pulling up the iTunes window. But I want the remote to open and control Front Row. Holding down the Menu button won't open Front Row, no matter how long I hold it. I can open Front Row normally through the Applications folder, but even when it's open, the Apple Remote doesn't control it - it still controls iTunes! Pressing play won't do anything in Front Row, but it will start a song playing in iTunes. The remote and my IR receiver are obviously working. How can I fix this?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
If you use the Accounts System Preferences to make a brand new user, log out and log in as the new user, does the Apple remote work as expected with Front Row? If so, then you have some kind of preference or setting that's blocking the remote in Front Row. If it doesn't work for the new user, then you have a system-wide or hardware problem.

  • No Audio when playing DVD's backed up on mac through Front Row

I have backed up my DVD library to an external hard drive and created an alias so that I can access them through front row. When I play them in the DVD player I have no problems, but when I play them in Front Row, I don't get any audio. Has anyone experienced this before?

Unfortunately, it's against the Terms of Use to post about "ripping" DVDs. It may be legal in your location, but in the United States (where these forums are hosted) it's illegal so you can't post about it. My advice, would be to post your topic again, including the exact details about the files you've saved (what video format they are) but skip the part about them coming from DVDs... If you've saved some VIDEO_TS folders, this may be a little more complicated, but you could say they were your own DVDs from iDVD. This topic will probably be deleted since it violates the ToU.

  • Front Row - Lid Closed - Blank Videos (but with audio)

I hooked my computer up to my TV last night to watch some videos through front row (stupid quicktime and the pro lockout on full screen - talk about penny pinching from Apple!). Front row worked fine if I set it up so that the TV mirrored my laptop display. However, if I tried to run the laptop in lid closed mode with the TV as my main/only monitor everything would work except for the videos. They would be black while retaining the audio. For example, the little preview movies shown in the selection menu were black as was the movie when you played it.
Is this a known bug? Is there a fix? (Obviously I can run it more or less similarly with mirroring and my main screen dimmed as I did.)

i'm having the same issue. The video i tried was purchased from the iTunes music store. i see no preview of the video and no video is played on screen however audio is present. the same problem also occurs when trying to watch a movie trailer via movie trailer front row interface. All Front Row graphics are seen, only video is a problem. I can open and play back the video without problems in Quicktime Pro. (fullscreen)
The video output is 1280x720 sent to a samsung tv using a built in profile with overscan disabled.

  • 2010 Mac Mini, Front Row and 5.1 Audio

I recently bought one of the new 2010 Mac mini's for my home theater. I have video going to my TV through HDMI. (I do not use the TV for audio.) I'm feeding audio to my receiver via optical. The problem I'm having is with 5.1 audio through Front Row. I've installed Perian and enabled AC3 passthrough. 5.1 audio works great when I play a video in iTunes (it also works with eyeTV). When I try to play the same movies through Front Row, I'm stuck with stereo audio and see no way to change it. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

I too have the latest mini, hooked up to a Denon receiver via pass-through HDMI.
I am not an audiophile in terms of setting up this stuff and just want to know what I need to do to get the optimum performance out of this mini, audio wise.
When I go to Audio MIDI Setup app, my receiver (DENON-AVAMP) is listed next to the "source" button. I have no clue about channels, bits, etc. When I click on the "Configure Speakers" button I am presented with different configurations so I selected "Multichannel" versus "Stereo". And I can see where you can test all 5 speakers and subwoofer, but I just don't know which "format" I am supposed to select.
The 5.1 mapping is shown when I select 8 channel/16 bit, 8 channel/20 bit, or 8 channel 24 bit. I can click on each speaker in this map and it tests properly no matter which one of the above combinations I select. Just not sure which one I am supposed to be using.
All I know is my Denon is a 5.1 system and all this works perfectly (getting 5.1 sound) with my Playstation 3 hooked up the same way to the Denon.
Does anybody know the correct settings to output 5.1 sound from this Mac Mini?
    Thanks guys!

  • Front Row plays audio but not video of MP4 H264 AAC files

    SL 10.6.6
    Here's the problem:
Take an MP4 movie file encoded with H264 and AAC thats plays with no problems in QT, iTunes, Front Row
Open this file in QT7Pro, add a mask using a GIF file then export as MP4 using video and audio pass through to avoid re-encoding
The new video file plays OK in QT and iTunes but only plays the audio track in Front Row - the video is just presented as a blank screen
This happens to every file i've tried it with.
I've tried trashing all front row caches/prefs/app support folders, installing/uninstalling/re-installing perian. i've tried changing the file extension to .mov .m4v .3gp - still the same problem the file plays perfectly except in Front Row
All the posts I can find on this topic seem to refer to subtitles causing a problem - these files have no subtitle track
    Any suggestions?

I have faced the same problem exactly. Some seasons and one movie I have detected so far, do not show any video at all. If I open the same files in iTunes, they show ok. If I open the same files in QuickTime thought no video also. I guess it has something to do with QuickTime then. Try it yourselves in order to see if it is the same problms with you guys. If that is the case I will try to extract an older version of QuickTime from the installation package via Pacifist and see if that works.
Even if it doesn't work I am pretty sure they will come up with a new update fixing this, but the point is that Apple isn't used in making bugged updates, up until recent. What is wrong with them lately?
Anyway, as soon as I have news in the afternoon I will let you know

  • Airport Express Playing Audio From Front Row

Can AE be directed to play the audio through Front Row. Obviously it would be nice when playing Itunes through the Front Row Interface, but I was more interested in getting the Full sound while playing movies through Front Row.

I read on former posts this was a previous options that was removed during a upgrade. That's shameful. I don't understand why such feature would be removed after being available previously. I assume it has to with trying to profit from a migration to apple TV. Something I would never do and never with the uncertainty such another purchase would loose features as this one.

  • Front Row: DVD audio Controls

Is there way to scroll through various audio channels while playing DVD's in front row? For example I want to jump from the regular audio channel to the Director's Commentary...is there a short cut to do this?
    jon

There is no way to do this with Front Row. However, this can be done with the regular DVD Player application. The on screen "controller" for the DVD Player can give you direct access to different audio channels or video angles.

  • AirTunes compatibility with Front Row

In the AirPort Express FAQ, it says:
Question: Can I use other applications, like QuickTime or Windows Media Player, to send sound to AirPort Express via AirTunes?
Answer: At this time Apple only supports sending one AirTunes stream to AirPort Express via iTunes 4.6 or later.
What does this mean for Front Row? Is Front Row just a interface for iTunes and hence works with AirTunes, or not. I see in the Front Row forum people asking many questions about getting volume control with Front Row and AirTunes, so it seems like the FAQ description sounds more limited that the reality.
I am particularly interested the ability to watch a movie (that has been loaded into iTunes) using the Front Row interface and piping the sound out to AirTunes. In this case, would Front Row be using iTunes (and work with AirTunes) or would Front Row be using QuickTime (and not work with AirTunes)?
If movies in Front Row will work, will it work for all movies loaded into iTunes -- e.g. not just mov files, but also avi files supported with QuickTime plug-in to make them work in iTunes? And, if avi files loaded into iTunes would work, would it work for both movies physically stored in /iTunes/movie folder, as well as 'reference movies' stored in that folder pointing to files stored elsewhere?

Per the Wikipedia AirPort article, no video in iTunes. Apparently, there are 3rd party utilities that can pump any program sound output (Mac and Windows) to the AX, not just iTunes -- which is handy, say, if you want to play Pandora in Safari. However, even these programs say they are useless for video. Apparently, the AirTunes protocol delays playback 2 to 10 seconds for buffering. Delay in audio playback aren't a problem, but with video, the sound and picture would be out of synch.
