Front Row Auto Play

I went to play music on Front Row like I used to on 10.4 on my new 10.5. I started the music fine and it played, but when I tried to get out by pressing the menu button on my remote, when I get to the main screen the music stopped. Is this suppose to happen? With 10.4 it usually kept playing and I could go on with what I was doing. Also, Front Row doesn't let you play music while viewing photos. Is this also supposed to happen? Is anyone else having these problems, I am using a newly updated intel MacBook Pro.

yes, this is normal behavior for the *new* Front Row, which is based on the Apple TV paradigm. as soon as you exit the "music" menu area, it will stop playing music. although it does not directly address your question, it is possible to set up a photo slideshow to play a particular playlist.

  • Force front row to play video on 16:9 aspect ratio

Hello, I would like to know if there is a way to force front row to play a 3:4 video in 16:9 aspect ratio.
As you can imagine, I have a 16:9 TV and I would like to see it, better in 16:9.
This can be done very well by Quicktime, I don't know why it seems not to be possible to do on Front Row.
Look forward to reading some answer.
    thanks,
    pvazquez

No, Front Row just plays them as they are flagged.
Even if you could, the video would be stretched and people would be short and fat!

  • Get Front Row to play from HVDVD_TS folder

How can I get Front Row to play content from a HVDVD_TS folder. It works great with standard VIDEO_TS folders (under Leopard/Snow Leopard) but it doesn't seem to recognise my DVD Studio Pro generated HVDVD_TS folder.
    Thx!

I have the same problem with remote control device (infrared) and FrontRow as many other users, see links below.
And yes, I have tried all the described "remedies", but the problem is still there.
The problem is that after boot, FrontRow reacts to the remote ok (about 10-15 minutes), but then
FrontRow stops responding to remote control commands. However, FrontRow can be controlled by keyboard
commands all the time. If iMac is now booted, the problem is still there. The only way I have had FrontRow
and remote work ok (for 10-15 mins) is shutting down iMac, waiting an hour or so, and then booting it. I'm just
wondering is this hardware problem (related to e.g. temperature ?), problem with FrontRow itself, or problem with
related daemons. Anyway, I hope that this is sw problem, and Apple could fix quite soon in next FrontRow or Mac OS X
update. Otherwise, I'm 100% sure to replace my iMac because of this stupid little bug (that seemed to be the only
    working remedy).

  • Front Row: problems playing WMV files

I’m running a Macbookpro OSX 10.5.7, and have been working to config Front Row to play the movies on my hard drive (not in iTunes). I’ve installed both flip4mac and Perian in order to play all file types. This works great for QuickTime and the web. Front Row, however, has a problem playing my wmv files (all others play fine). When a wmv file is selected in FR, it only plays for a few seconds, then stops and returns to the movie list. I researched the solution provided by VideoDrive, which works, but I prefer to organize my videos into subfolders by category, rather than all in an alpha list in iTunes.
If I play a wmv in it’s entirety in Quicktime, it will then play in Front Row. This tells me it’s some sort of cache issue? My attempt to test this theory has been inconclusive, prob due to my ignorance.
    Troubleshooting to date has been:
Quitting FR from the Activity Monitor
    Deleting user/library/preferences/com.apple.frontrow.plist
    Uninstalling and reinstalling flip4mac
    Installing Perian
Would prefer not to have to rip all of my video to mp4 (I use iSquint), but I’m out of ideas.
Apologies in advance if this is covered elsewhere.

  • Front Row not playing Trailers or Top 10 iTunes Movies

Hoping someone might be able to help me out with this weird problem I have had for a few months (since before Leopard, but it persists since updating to 10.5.1.)
My Front Row wont play the Theatrical Trailers or iTunes Top 10 movies previews.
It happily updates the list. But whenever I click on one I get:
"The Selected Video Could Not Be Played, The Format Was Not Recognised".
I have no problems playing TV Show previews, Music Videos and my own ripped movies.
I get the same results on my Apple TV and my 18 month old intel iMac.
    Any ideas ? Much appreciated.

I'm having this same problem. The only solution I've found, scouring both the forum and internet, is to wait until it figures itself out, which is completely unacceptable. I recently updated my software and still no joy.

  • Front Row auto launches on login

Now why would that be? About 4-5 seconds after logging in my user, Leopard auto launches Front Row. Leopard is choosy in this regard, as it does not extend the same 'courtesy' for my wife's account or that of the sysadmin.
Anyone else seen this oddity and got a way out of it?
    Cheers,
    Nige.

Don't just uncheck the box next to the name of the program. Click on the program to select it, and then click on the - (minus) button below the list of programs to actually remove the program from your startup list.
It doesn't remove the program from the computer, just the startup list for that account. I use the + button to add programs like AddressBook, Mail, and iCal to my user account so that they automatically launch when I log in. You are just trying to remove a program from that list totally.

  • Stom Mac Mini from sleeping when iTunes/Front Row is playing

Just like the title says ..
When I play music through front row/iTunes, the computer still sleeps. This is not the case when playing videos. I've looked everywhere for setting to change this, but can't seem to find it.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,

It's not the computer but the monitor that falls asleep when using iTunes.
You can change this in syspreferences, energy saving.
Sleeping of monitors is suppressed when you watch videos in full screen mode.

  • Front Row doesnt play unknown Audio CDs

    Hi there,
I am using my Mac Mini as media center in our living room. After upgrading to Leopard I experience problems with Front Row and Audio CDs that are not known to iTunes or the CDDB database.
When I insert a brand new Audio CD or a rare or self-burned CD iTunes or Front Row wont (certainly) find the CD titles. In iTunes I can play that CD without problems , in Front Row however in the Music section the Audio CD appears as "Audio CD", and when I click on it nothing happens, it just sits there and wont play. This only happens with unkown CDs. All other CDs which titles are recognized will play without problems.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Edward

I was just browsing the support for the same reason; I'm just setting my MacMini media center up, and the first CD my fiancee puts in is of course a CDR she got from a friende. It just didn't work, while it did in iTunes, although without any CDDB information.
I guess' I'll report it to Apple.

  • Front Row not playing ogg vorbis

    Hi!
I installed the OGG vorbis Quicktime components from www.xiph.org and iTunes plays these files perfectly. However, when I want to use Front Row to listen to them, I only get the message that the file cannot be played.
Can anyone help me with that?
    Thanks in advance

I have the same problem. I'm not sure if I had this same problem in 10.4.x, or if it came with Leopard ... (I just upgraded.)
Too bad Apple doesn't include OGG/Vorbis and FLAC to the list of officially supported formats, what do they have to loose?

  • Can Front Row continue playing the next video? (continuous playing)

    Hey everybody,
I tried searching the forum, but no hits, so I thought: let's post something
I got lots of small (get-a-mac) video's in my Movies folder, and I want to play them on my TV through Front Row. But after every video I have to select the next one and press play...
That can't be the way to go...?!
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Dirkuijt, Netherlands

This question has come up before. Unfortunately, there's no way to make a "playlist" of videos as you might in iTunes for music. The videos are played with the QuickTime Player application, not iTunes. The QuickTime Player application has no ability to read/play a list of videos.
If you choose an iTunes playlist that includes movies, you'll only hear the sound and you won't see any video.
Since Apple considers Front Row a part of Mac OS X, I'd send Apple some Mac OS X feedback and let them know you'd like to see this option:

  • Front row not playing DTS soundtracks

    Dear forum,
I'm having a strange problem that I'm hoping someone can help me with. I have my Mac mini connected to a 5.1 speaker system via optical out.
When I play back DVDs using the DVD Player, starting it from the dock, I get nice 5.1 DTS sound.
When I however play back DVDs using front-row, all I can ever get is dolby digital.
It would seem that front-row is converting the 5.1 audio to 2 channels before sending them to the audio output
I've played with the audio/midi set up until the cows come home but can't get this behavior to change.
Has anybody got any ideas? I'm using the mini as a HTPC so I'd like to be able to do things via front-row as opposed to the system dock.
    Regards,
    Marc.

I have the same problem. When I play DVD records in DVD player and select 5.1 audio on DVD record audio setup menu, either Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1, then I get this format output to my receiver. When I play the same DVD record in Front Row then it outputs plain stereo whatever I select. What can be wrong?
    Thanks/Mikael

  • Front row cannot play video on my shared network? not recognized? HELP!

When i launch my front row on my macbook it informs me that there are no videos being shared on my mini. But when i review the mini inside itunes i clearly see all the content and can play it. Any ideas why itunes and front row would not work together? It worked fine in the past, but the last two upgrades knocked it out. Both units are fully updated.

That is strange, it sounds like it should be working. I might try to create a new user with the Accounts System Preferences on the MacBook, log out and log in as the new user. Can the new user find the shared videos in Front Row? If not, then you have some kind of system-wide problem. If they can find the shared videos, then your original user has a preference or configuration issue.

  • Front row not playing ball !!  (or even beach ball)

hey i got a mini !! and thats cool!!
but i'm a bit limited for space so i hooked it up to an WD external H/D ..
so all my avi movies are on the external , but front row only wants to read my internal H/D movie folder !! how do i get it to read my external movie folder instead!! ?? any ideas!!
had a look on the thread , but no related topics... i'm thinking it may be some kind of itunes fix??

hey cool!! solved it my self!! simple solution,
go to the external h/d movie folder you want in front-row go to actions click "make alias" (windows speak a "readable short cut") drag the alias folder to your internal movie folder.... now front-row will read your external hard drive movie folder!!

  • Will can replace Front Row and play podcast from itunes?

One thing I did with Front Row pre-Lion that I can't do with Lion is watch video podcasts on my MacMini connected to my SDTV (no HDMI). Plex doesn't seem to have any connection to iTunes. Is there any Front Row replacement that will let me watch my video podcasts?

new2appletv, I think you missed roestuff's point. They were wanting to BUY a HD movie -- not copy it.
It's frustrating that we can live in a complete HD environment with a Mac Mini, UNTIL we start downloading from iTunes. The alternative to downloading from iTunes, is to buy the DVD or Blu-Ray, both of which are no less "copyable", than the output from the Mac Mini. As all movie/music pirates have shown over the years -- where there's a will, there's a way.
I share the frustration. I have an XServe, a Mac Pro & 3 Mini's running a home theater & TV network around my house. I can happily watch, AND RECORD, HD content from TV stations. I'm not into pirating -- it is all for my own use. Because of alleged "abuse" by some users, I can only expand to 1 further Mac on my network due to the 5 machine limit imposed by iTunes. My frustration is that the content doesn't even leave my house (except for when it is on my iPhone).
Apple need to learn to negotiate better, particularly if they want to be at the centre of a digital world. I can buy a Tivo for the same price as a Mac Mini, and a Tivo doesn't have all of the restrictions placed on it that the Macs do. I feel sometimes that Apple try to prove that they are the Volvo drivers of an online world -- but uncertain what they are trying to achieve.
