Front Row automatic advance?

I have a list of movies displayed in Front Row. Is there a way to set up Front Row so that it automatically advances and plays the next movie, one after the other? If not, any recommendations on third party software that can do this? Many thanks.

Although iTunes and some iPods now support "video playlists", unfortunately Front Row does not. There may be some third-party media players that will do that. There's another topic only about a week old with the same question:

I would suggest you send feedback to Apple with your request:

  • Front Row Automatically Switch to 2nd Display

It's a gripe of mine that Front Row couldn't automagically be sent to a 2nd monitor in Tiger; is this fixed in Leopard?
Basically, I have a 19" Samsung LCD plugged in via DVI to my MacBook Pro, and I'd like to have Front Row on it, but the main menu/dock on my MacBook Pro's screen. I know I can open up Displays in System Preferences and rearrange them to get Front Row on the external, but this seems to be an annoying thing to deal with. Is there any other way?

Well, after many hours of research, I found that I could design some AppleScripts or programs to help do this, but (a) I don't have the time to invest in that, and (b) I will simply resort to DVD player. Front Row is nice, but without the ability to go through a 2nd monitor, it's pretty much useless to me, because there's no way I'll sit back from my computer and use the Apple Remote to navigate a movie on a 15" screen, when I have a 22" screen right next to it.

  • Mac mini: eyetv & front row

    Hi,
This is my first mac in over a decade, which I bought to use a s a media center, with my elgato eyetv 200.
Can Front Row see the eyetv recordings? My goal is to configure eyetv to save to the right format in the right location, so that front row automatically finds our tv shows.
If someone could please help me answer these questions:
    1) Are Front Row and eyetv compatible? (please say yes this is why I bought the mini)
    2) What file formats do FrontRow and eyetv have in common?
    3) Do files have to be in a specific location for Front Row to find them?
    4) How do you manage Front Row? Is it a service, or an application? It's not in the Applications directory.
I welcome any corrections to my jargon, as most of my experience is with Win32.
    Many thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion, popsicle. I'll try your recommendation before giving up FrontRow, since it's time for an external HD anyway.
For future reference, this is a suggestion from from elgato tech support, may be interesting to others: they suggest using MediaCentral as an alternative to FrontRow...
EyeTV records MPEG Transport Streams - the worldwide standard for digital TV, including HDTV.
QuickTime has poor MPEG support, and doesn't support Transport Streams at all.
So, FrontRow is very limited when it comes to MPEG video.
Record in EyeTV, then export using "MPEG-4". If your EyeTV recordings are set for MPEG-4 in the Devices > Encoding preferences, then try "MPEG-4 AV" as the export.
There is no EyeTV integration with FrontRow. Apple doesn't want that at this time, since they don't offer any plugins or ways to play more MPEG content.
MediaCentral is a free alternative that supports EyeTV.

  • Opening Front Row Using Applescript

I have created a sleep timer for Front Row but I would like if Front Row would open when I run the sleep timer. I have tried the normal activate command as well as open and launch but none of these open front row.
Can anyone show me some code that will open Front Row automatically?
    Thanks for the help.

That still didnt open Front Row.
I was wondering if it was possibly to use the keyboard shortcut to activate front row. the command escape keys pressed together open front row. I dont know how to do that using applescript though.
    Thanks for the effort though.

  • Automatically switch Front Row display to  a second monitor

I know that it is possible to change the "primary monitor" in the System Proferences, start Front Row, and then manually change to primary monitor back later on, but is there a way to do this automatically?
    Thanks

    Hi Susan....
I occasionally use my MBP with my lcd TV and didn't want to mess around with stuff all the time, so I just mirror my MBP display onto the LCD TV. The MBP normally changes it's display to match the TV, and changes back when I disconnect. I also turn the brightness down to zero on the mbp to save the display!
    Problem solved!

  • Automatically start Front Row

I've ditched the AppleTV in favour of a second Mac Mini. Much better. I'm streaming HDTV bitstreams and DVD (MPEG) bitsreams from a USB drive attached to Airport Extreme. (Simple alias creation in the MOVIE folder and additional components installed for Quicktime). No loss of quality through converting to h.264. No waiting around 24 hours to encode. Front Row interface is MUCH better than AppleTV interface.
Two questions which I can't find the answer to: First, is there a way to automatically start front row? I would like the Mac Mini to automatically turn on (easy) and then automatically start the Front Row interface.
Second, is there a way to modify the Front Row menu structure?
All I would like is simply Videos: Movies. I would like ro remove (or hide) Sharing... Trailers... etc.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Many thanks.

You can write an AppleScript, that you add to your user's login items, that will open Front Row each time you login. You can find the instructions here to write the script:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2148108
I don't think there's anyway to change the built-in menu structure, though. It's hard-coded into Front Row. You can add folders and sub-folders to your user's Movies folder. Front Row will follow them down into all your video files.

  • Automatic Front Row Playlist in iTunes?

Hi, I just got my MBP last week, and i was wondering:is there any way to disable the automatic creation of a Front Row Playlist in iTunes anytime i play music thorugh it?

No you can't configure that. It should however get removed by Front Row when it exits to the desktop.

  • Playing movies in Front Row one after another automatically?

I have a number of short video clips that I can watch with Front Row. However, every time a clip ends, I have to go and click “play” on the next clip and this is annoying. I am wondering if there is a way to make movies play one after another without stopping. Thanks for the help!

    David,
Thanks for the help. I'm still thinking there must be SOME way to pull this off. It seems like Mac's can do just about anything if you take the time to figure it out. Why wouldn't the people who designed Front Row not add this feature? It doesn't make any sense. There has to be a way. Anybody else have any ideas?

  • Front Row strange behavior

    Hello, there.
I have recently bought a 27-inch Core i5 iMac to replace my old 2.66GHZ Core 2 Duo 20-inch model.
As I try to use Front Row with my new Apple Remote (it worked before with my old iMac), everytime I roll down the lists (Artists, Songs, ...) it rolls back automatically to the Artist which is playing, not allowing me to select another Artist or even roll down more than three lines. What happens?
I have also paired the remote on system preferences but it didn't resolve the issue.
    Can anybody please help me?
    Thanks in advance,
    Diego.

Thanks a lot for answering my topic.
Yes, I did install the 10.6.4 update and the all the content works perfectly within iTunes, which is the latest version (9.2.1). About the scrolldown on Front Row, even if I use the Apple Wireless Keyboard or the Remote the software does the same thing as I wrote on the first post of the topic.
Is there anything that I can do to solve this?

  • New to Front Row

Hey Ive just got my first ever Mac and still getting used to it, anyway I like to have everything organised and so when I transferred all my videos from my old pc I put them in the Movies folder but Id like them to be more organised in front row - rather than me finding the original folder - like tv shows under the tv show section - is Itunes the only way to make this happen? Oh and when I import them into Itunes it makes a copy of them in the Itunes folder which isnt very good as I dont need two copies would rather just have the original in the Movie folder

Front Row looks in two places for your various video files. It looks inside your user's "Movies" folder (and the sub folders there) and it looks inside your iTunes library. You can manually create folders inside your "Movies" folder called "TV Shows" or something similar and then traverse those folders in Front Row.
If you don't want to copy files into the iTunes library, you can uncheck the option in the Advanced tab of the preferences that says "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library". Remember, this option also controls the location of music files too. Any music you might drag into your iTunes library won't be copied either. If you rip a CD or buy music from the iTunes store, those files should still automatically go into your Music folder and the iTunes library.

  • Selecting which Albums in Appear in  Front Row

    Hello All,
I like the idea that iPhoto albums appear in Front Row. However, as my list of albums grow, this could get hard to use. Is there any way to select which iPhoto albums appear in Front Row?
    Thanks in advance
    Kantron

Not that I know of. FR shows galleries, keepsakes, albums and slideshows. After the last import the albums are listed in the order that they are in the Albums section. Put those you want least at the bottom of that list. The same goes for galleries, keepsakes and slideshows.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Front row w/ remote

so will the remote that comes with the new intels only work in front row? for example, lets say i went to put a DVD into one of the new intel mac minis and have DVD Player automatically launch .. will the remote not work straight from DVD player? or iTunes? though i'm sure it's nice at times, i'd hate to always have to go into the Front Row front-end to use the thing.

Yes the remote will work with some other applications if they are front most. Here are the ones I know of:
DVD Player will handle menu navigation, play/pause and chapter advance.
QuickTime Player will allow you to play/pause and do chapters.
iPhoto will respond to left/right arrow commands to change album selections. Play/Pause will start a slide show but you can't get out of one until it finishes.
iTunes will respond to left/right arrow commands to change current track and Play/Pause will start/stop the song.
Keynote will allow you to advance to next slide and go to previous slide.

  • Front Row problems with NAS drive (2 of them)

OK... having 2 problems with Front Row...
    Background
First, I should say I'm new to Mac OS X, had early Macs, but went PC a long time ago.
I burned all of my music from CDs (I own) on my WinXP box, then copied them over to a NAS drive for easy access between computers.
The NAS is an Infrant ReadyNAS. The drive is shared on my network. The keychain app has the password information to the share. Though I should note, it doesn't matter if I remove the password from the share.
The ReadyNAS has a nice feature whereas it will act as an iTunes server, this is enabled. I do not have AFP or NFS enabled on the NAS since I regularly access the drive on WinXP machines. All access is SMB/CIFS.
I mounted the drive and created a link between the iTunes home folder and the network share. Thus, iTunes automatically mounts the share when started and seems to be comfortable that the files are accessible.
    Everything works fine in iTunes.
    Not so in Front Row.
    Problem #1
Front Row will not read the "Shared Music." When I go this route in Front Row, it finds the NAS iTunes Music Server, but insists on being given a password to access the "Share." Of course, you can't enter a password.
Again, everything works just fine in iTunes. It shows the server fine under "Shared," and immediately brings up all music and plays it readily.
Just doesn't work in Front Row.
    Problem #2
Front Row stopped auto-mounting the NAS share which is linked to the iTunes music folder. iTunes will mount it, if it is not mounted already when it first is asked to play a song. Up until this morning, Front Row would automount it too. This AM, after getting the Apple security update, Front Row would not automount the share. Note, if I automount the share manually, or go to iTunes (which properly automounts) before launching Front Row everything works fine from Front Row.
It took me a second to figure this out, as Front Row's terribly missleading error message is, you are not authorized to play this song - authorize it (well, that is the point of the wordy message). Of course, this confused me, since these are not iTunes store songs and of course, this worked fine yesterday.
Anyway, what is really happening, (I surmise) is it is not automounting the share and cannot read the song, and seemingly defaulted to the assumption it is a DRM problem.
I have to say, this is one out of the old Microsoft handbook. Missleading error messages and broken functionality from (it would seem) rushed out security updates.
I'm gonna have to tip my hat... some of those Microsoft developers that made the move from Redmond to Cupertino brought their game with them!
    LOL
Anyway... anyone that can offer a hand would make my wife very happy. She likes Front Row... and now she has to start iTunes to make Front Row work. Sheesh.
Thanks in advance for the help.
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Nah

    Hi,
same thing here: I have 3 LCD-screens (30,26,20 Apple Displays) on two graphic-cards (ATI X1900XT, NVDIA7300GT). Front Row does not display any pictures or movies. Menus work like they should, Music also plays fine, but images are not shown. It only shows a white screen on the main screen (30") and the other two are dimmed to black. If i type ESC i get back to the menus...
    Any hint? Regards - Peter

  • MBP - Playing music from my Ipod with Front Row?

So that I don't clutter up my MBP HD with a bunch of mp3 files, I simply connect my ipod via its USB cable to my MBP when I want to listen to music.
However, when I click on Front Row, and select my albums to play, it doesnt show anything at all. It only wants to show items in the Library folder.
Is there a way to make Front Row play from my ipod or do I really have to have everything in the Library folder instead?
    Thanks

Anyone know how to import songs into library without
    copying files?
    Thks!
I'm not sure this is totally right but here it goes:
First make sure that your settings are for manual addition of songs for your ipod, otherwise when you get to "adding playlists" like I mention below, it will be a nightmare.
You need to have your mp3 files as DATA on your iPod - not just as the songs that regularly play nicely through the iPod. So enable data use, and have all of your songs on the iPod in data mode.
Then what you need to do is open all of your music files. Essentially what will happen is that your iTunes will add them automatically to your library as a LINK to the Data on your iPod. When your ipod is not connected, the files will not be playable and will have the ! next to them.
Place all of the songs (which are now really links) into appropriate play lists.
This, in my mind sounds like it works. All I remember is that when you have an MP3 on your desktop, and double click on it, it adds it to the library from the Desktop location.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE "ADD A COPY OF MUSIC TO ITUNES FOLDER UNCHECKED" under advanced settings, or your music will be copied to your computer.
Good luck, I hope this works for you, it would seem that it does.

  • How to Delete Item from Front Row?

Someone sent me a short imovie project and it was automatically downloaded to my "Download" folder. When I opened Front Row, the project name it's right under "Movies" along with "iTunes Top Movies", "Theatrical Trailers" and "Movie Folder".
I then moved the project file from "Download" to another folder created under my "Movie" folder. When I went to Front Row again, the original project was still under the list in Movies, now it's also in "Movies Folder". So basically it's showing up twice in Front Row in different places.
I see that once I play the movie from my Movies folder directly from the folder, it's automatically set to Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Movies. So it's showing up in Front Row via iTunes, and it's also showing in Front Row via my Movies Folder.
I just want to organize Front Row so that I don't have a long list of projects immediately under "Movies" in Front Row. I want these projects to neatly go in one personal movie folder only.
Is there a way to reorganize the items list in Front Row?
How do I delete the item that's originally placed under "Movies" in Front Row?

Assets are organized in various apps - primarily iTunes for most of us.
