Front Row: Becomes runaway process after using

Perhaps someone can verify if this is a wide spread problem, or just my machine.
I use FR to playback video files and music in my home office; however, after "closing" FR, the "Front Row" process runs away. Comsuming 100% of a processor and generally slowing down the system.
I end up force quitting the FR app and the system returns to normal -- I've rebooted without effect.
But even after quitting the FR app, pressing "Menu" on the remote will bring it back up and work normally, until you close it again.
Any ideas?
Tried all the usual fix, permissions, plist, reboot...

Hi Kevin Arnold, thanks for the tip on force-quitting through Activity Monitor. It worked and freed the CPU resources -- Plus I can get back into Front Row and it seems to work (until the next crash...) so maybe now I won't have to restart everytime this happens!
When I say Front Row crashes, I mean that it hammers the CPU in the background. It never actually crashes with an error message, it just fails to quit sometimes (often) when going back to the desktop. Also on occassion, FrontRow HAS started 'hammering the CPU' while still running in the foreground and I get stuck inside FrontRow unable to return to the desktop; but in this case, apple-Q WILL work within Front Row to kill the app and return everything to normal.
My FrontRow just crashed again a minute ago, so I ran the % sample Front\ Row 5 terminal command you posted earlier for someone else, and the result said 'bash: no such process'. **yes, I ran the command before force-quitting through application monitor**
Here are the last few lines from FrontRow.Crash.Log:

  • How do I point Front Row to a media server using AppleShare?

I haven't used Front Row much. Does it have to use the same library as my iTunes? What I'd like to do is point Front Row on my various Macs to my Lacie Media server. I fooled around with "settings" in Front Row but I'm not finding the server on my network.

Drag an alias of your movies folder from the media server to your Front Row computer's movies folder inside your home account. Front Row will allow you to navigate using that alias.

  • Just stop already Front Row, I'm tring to use my APPLE TV!

I've searched the support threads and a few pages in this discussion group but missed what has got to be an easy fix. My Macbook pro is often either open and being used, or closed but still sitting in between me and my Apple TV. Whenever i use my apple TV remote, my Macbook- as it should- launched front row. Annoying especially when it is closed and in sleep, and now wakes up. How do I stop Front Row from launching when I am really working my apple tv. I rarely use it on my Macbok so I don't mind having to manually launch the application.

You will need to "pair" each of your two remotes with each device.

  • Front Row becoming scrambled

When Front Row has been playing for a while the display becomes scrambled. The text looses characters and the album art becomes posterised and generally indeciferable.
Is anyone else having this issue? I'm worried it could be a hardware problem although it only seems to occur with Front Row.

yes i have this problem too. no biggie, just annoying having to restart front row now and then.

  • Front Row Using iPod Dock - Is it possible.

Hello there. I've been trying to find some info on the iPod Dock only because I've heard from some that it includes the Apple Remote, but can not seem to get this confirmed on either the apple store or amazon.
First off is it even possible to use the remote with the iPod Dock? From my understanding it is, so if that's the case wouldn't it then be possible to use Front Row on the Mac Pro since the IR port is now technically there?
I mean mainly I use my Mac Pro for doing work, but as the system is in my bedroom I think that it's kind of silly that I can't lay in bed at night and watch a movie without having to get up out of bed or something. That's really my only complaint about the system.. you pay a fairly larger amount more for being able to use a feature that's already built into the system the only means to access it is to purchase a separate ~$600 system.
Oh well sorry to rant off. Anyway, can you control Front Row on the Mac Pro using the iPod Dock?
    Cheers

I'd like to be able to also do this with my iMac G5, the iPod dock connected to it and my Apple Remote. Unfortunately, a search of versiontracker.com finds lots of apps to extend functionality on Macs that already are supported (ie have built in IR), as well as apps that let you use Bluetooth devices as a clicker on any Mac.
    Anyone got a suggestion?

  • Front Row broke?!!?!?!?(after 10.4.3)

    WHAT!?
My brother just got an iMac g5 and his front row program is broken after 10.4.3
    anyone know of a fix?

    Nathan-
The only thing I have seen regarding the update and broken Front Row application so far involves illegal copies of Front Row. Seems as though Apple has figured out a way to outwit the nitwits as it were.
However, I am assuming that your brother just got an iMac "version C" with the Front Row program installed. Maybe some more information could be of help to others with better answers.
    Good Luck!

  • Front Row Wouldn't Quit

I haven't had mush of a chance to use Front Row, so yesterday I was using it to go thrugh some photos and then play some iTunes.
After I was finished and pressed the MENU button on the remote to quit, I went back and quit iPhoto and iTunes. Then I discovered my whole system to be sluggish and Front Row wouldn't open up again.
Looking at an Activity Monitor, I noted Front Row was hogging 92% of my CPU. I then tried to conduct a Force Quit, but Front Row was not on the list of running apps. Still, Front Row was shown as hogging 90% of the CPU. Front Row wouldn't re-open and I couldn't get the cpu process to stop.
Finally I had to restart the iMac.
Comments and tips would be appreciated.

    Oh then it's really bad.
Fortunately i did not have this problem (yet) on my iMac G5. But who knows?
About force quiting FrontRow: It does not show in the forcequit window, thats right. But when you use the Activity Monitor, then you see all running tasks, there you should also see the frontrow task. Select it and hit the "Stop" button, then you will be asked if you really want to kill that task, hit "Force Quit" and then it's "killed"

  • Front Row behaviour changed

    Hi.
I am using my mac mini as a media station and to watch TV a lot. To bring Front Row and eyetv together, I used this tip of elgato: http://forums.elgato.com/viewtopic.php?f=96&t=1360
Despite the performance issues of Front Row (http://www.tuaw.com/2009/09/01/front-row-performance-takes-a-dive-with-newest-ki tty/) the configuration of Front Row changed after the Snow Leopard Update.
It is not possible to access Front Row with a long press of the menu button from eyetv anymore. Does anybody know how to get back the default behaviour of the eyetv tip?

    Hey,
as someone earlier said it seems to be an issue with the screen saver.
However i didn´t have to turn mine off alltogether. If you go to the settings pane in Front Row and turn the screen saver off it is just inactive when Front Row is enabled. Why would you want a screen saver then anyways?
This fixed the problem for me.

  • Showing photos with Front Row without iPhoto

I love Apple, but frankly I cannot stand iPhoto. With the 2011 release, I tried another time to use it but trashed it a couple hours after.
I have all my picture simply into the Finder, inside a Dropbox folder which keeps them in sync amongst several macs of mine.
So I would like to know whether there is a way to use Front Row to show pictures without using iPhoto.
The best way for me would be to access directly the Finder or the file system. But I could also evalueate using other software, as long as they automatically sync their library with the content of the file system.
Any hint / idea / help?
I had thought of making a movie with the pictures, but that would be too unconfortable...
    Thank you.

    Hi,
I have got the same problem, i used to see the my pictures from all the events in the iphoto, but i think after some SL update i can only hear the slideshow music but no pictures.
I don't exactly remember when front row broke down because i do not use it regularly to watch pictures, i only use it to watch movie trailers, which still works fine.
    Hope someone can help.
    Cheers

  • Front Row worked well in Lion. What about in Mountain Lion?

    No comment at this stage.

    Hi there Lostmyshoe,
Yes, Front Row worked in Lion after reinstalling.

  • How to install Front Row on PB 15"...

    Hello everyone,
I have heard a little "trick" that allows you to install Front Row on PowerBook 15". Using Pacifist (www.versiontracker.com)to install the package FrontRow Updates 1.0.1...Have anyone tried this before?
I have tried but it doesn't work...
    Any suggestion?
    Cheers,
    James
P.S. It is supposed to work only by Key Combination like Apple-Escape or something like that but I did not see the key combination in Key&Mouse Preference for Front Row.

Hi, James - I have Front Row installed on my PB and it works perfectly. In fact, I know a couple of people who are using their mobile phones as remote controls.
The problem may be that you need to install Front Row Enabler after installing Front Row. Restart after each installation. The Front Row keyboard shortcut should appear at the bottom of the list in System Preferences:
    Other key commands are:
Arrow Keys - spin and move up and down
    Option+Up/Down - set volume
Enter or Spacebar - select menu, playlist, song, movie, etc.
Escape - go back to previous menu/screen
    Tab - return to desktop

  • Selecting a specific Slideshow from iPhoto to view in Front Row

Hello! Can anybody help me to get Front Row to play an individual Slideshow, please? The Help that Apple provides for using Front Row is very basic, and I've searched for an answer on these forums without any luck.
When I open Front Row and navigate to Photos>Shared Photos>My Photos I then get a list of just the main headings in my iPhoto library. But each of these headings has individual grouped selections of photos. These are what I want to access, but they aren't accessible from Front Row. For example, if I select Slideshows, I have 36 of these, but Front Row just plays them all together as one slideshow. I don't want this - I want to select one at a time of course.
Surely there must be a way of doing this? I cannot believe that Apple didn't think of this when they created Front Row, but the instructions for using the program in Mac Help are very brief. One other thing, I can only use Front Row to access my iPhoto library if I have iPhoto running. This seems very poor to me - the library is on the same hard drive - I am not accessing anybody else's library. Again, there is nothing in the Mac Help for Front Row which tells you you must have iPhoto open to view photos in Front Row.
I do hope somebody can help me, because I especially bought my 27" iMac to view my photos, and being unable to select slideshows, or even subfolders for that matter, is most frustrating.
    Thank you,
    Bruce

If anybody has stumbled across this thread, having a similar problem to mine, you might be interested in how things finally turned out.
Eventually I contacted Apple technical support. They spent 90 minutes (yes, at 5p a minute) trying to fix it. They were very helpful, and suggested just about every blessed thing you might think of including dragging the iPhoto library out onto the desktop, creating a new one, dragging the files back in, repairing permissions with Disk Utility - one thing after another. Nothing worked - Front Row stubbornly refused to recognise my iPhoto library.
In the end what we did was to drag the iPhoto library out (we tried that before, but this went a different route) and put it in folder in the Pictures folder. I gave the folder a name just to identify it. Then I Option-clicked the iPhoto application program (not the library!) and it asked me if I wanted to create a new library, which I did, so I let it create a new one back in the Pictures folder (this was why I moved the original one out of the way).
So this opened, and of course was blank. So I went back to the Pictures folder in the Finder and opened the folder in which I hid the original iPhoto library. I Option-clicked this library and selected Show Package Contents. So now all the original files, folders and images were revealed. The only folder I needed now was one called Originals. I dragged this folder straight into the big empty window of my open iPhoto application, and iPhoto began to import all my original photos into the new copy of iPhoto.
Now I have all my photos back, but unfortunately all my albums and slideshows are lost. But one good thing is in the main photos window, with View set to Event Titles, and Sort set to Dates, everything is clearly divided back into event and date order. I can easily select each group of photos which are nicely divided up for me, and create new folders, named with subjects or events, and then create new slideshows from them.
OK it will take me a little while to get it back to how it was, but not quite the disaster it might have been if iPhoto had not been able to sort everything out from the metadata, into date order.
I am grateful to Paul Horan, senior technical support advisor at Apple Care, who called me back with what was admittedly a drastic solution, after trying a few fixes himself.
    Hope this help someone else!

  • Front Row/music playback issue

    Hi all,
I have a rather large music library in iTunes and I have my Mac Mini attached to my stereo and TV. I use Front Row for music playback. Recently, I have been having trouble as the music will "stall" randomly or "freeze" for a couple seconds, then resume playing. Very annoying.
I've noticed that this problem does not seem to happen if I select the music from iTunes without Front Row running or if I use FR to select the music, then back out of FR with the little remote.
Anyway, I prefer to keep FR running. I've seen LOTS of articles and posts regarding video freezing with FR, but not music. Anyone know what's wrong?
    Thanks!

I have the same problem on my macmini. :/
And I too like to leave Front Row playing songs while I do other thing in my house.
It hangs in almost every song now, it never did that before. I wonder if it's this iTunes update...
Is there someone else with the same problem, or someone that could help us solve that?

  • Front Row is GONE!! Why, Front Row, why?!

I haven't used Front Row in a long time (I lost my remote, oops), but on my recent trip home I found my remote again. When I used it on my MacBook, it worked fine. Suddenly though, it controls iTunes and the volume of the computer but hitting menu does nothing. The second screen doesn't show up. I checked the remote using my iSight and it's working, and the "Unpair" function is not available. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Can you open Front Row using the keyboard? Pressing Apple-esc together should open Front Row. You can then use the arrow keys and the return key to move around. If you can't run Front Row with the keyboard, you might look to see if it's still installed. It should be in this path:
    <Macintosh HD>/System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app
If it's not in there, you'll need to re-install it from your original Mac OS X install disk. You can do this by running the "Install Bundled Software Only" option on the disk. There's no need to boot from the disk. On the "Installation Type" screen, there should be a "Customize" button where you can uncheck all the other options but make sure Front Row is checked "on" and then run the installer.
