Front Row causing sleep when media on external drive

Hello. I have my media on an external drive, a WD My Book. I am getting a "no signal" message from my monitor when browsing with Front Row. If I click the remote, it will wake back up, for about 20 seconds.
It seems like the new Front Row doesn't use iTunes as intimately as before.
Where is my Video Podcast list?
Where's the cool animation transition when you envoke Front Row?

I did this and it didn't stop the "blinking." The machine still appears to sleep the display for about a second every 10 minutes or so (about the amount of time my Energy Saver is set to kick in).

  • Watching dvds in front row = displays sleeps

hi all - i gots the following problem
watching dvds in front row = displays sleeps - or at least dulls back until i use the trackpad to wake it
i assumed that this would not be issue with front row as it would be obvious that i wanted the dvd shown full screen - any ideas?

Wow, I never found this before. I played the dvd in front row on best performance (battery setting) and the display went black. I closed front row and opened it in dvd player and it played for 15 min and never went black.
Any way I went into energy saver and adjusted custom to never turn off display then opened front row. That seems to have worked.

  • I just installed the Front Row update. When

I just installed the Front Row update. When I view photos through Front Row, the first album selection that comes up is "Shared Photos" - I set iphoto NOT to look for shared photos. I also set the slideshow NOT to play music. But every time I quit and then re-open iPhoto. those settings are not held - it says to look for shared photos and to play music...
How do I get the settings in iPhoto to stick?

    HappySwitcher,
    try the following:
Quit iPhoto if it is running.
In your user directory there is folder named "Library". Inside the Library Folder there is a folder called "Preferences". Inside this preference folder there is a file named "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" .
Do the following, click on the name of this file and change it to "com.apple.iPoto.plist" or anything else different than iPhoto.
Now launch iPhoto and adjust your settings.
See if they "stick", if so, you can trash the file whose name you changed. If not try running permissions and repeating the process.
Check back if it does not work.

  • Sleep and a firewire external drive?

I was wondering the correct way to put my eMac to sleep with a new external drive. Do I eject the external drive and then put the eMac to sleep or can I just leave the external drive going when I put the eMac to sleep? I don't want to screw up my new HD.
eMac 1.25 gHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   768 MB RAM, 30 GB internal drive, 160 GB firewire external drive

    Bob:
I think since you're hard drive is connected via Firewire, it's safe to keep it turned on and then in your "Energy Saver" System Preferences select "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible."
    Notice the "(s)"

  • ITunes Settings for Media on External Drive via Airport Extreme...

iTunes Settings for Media on External Drive via Airport Extreme base station versus plugging directly into laptop.
My current configuration is that my iTunes Media (700gb) are all stored in an External Drive that's plugged into my Airport Extreme Base Station. This works great for me having wireless access to my iTunes external drive.
Whenever I need to back up that hard drive with Time Machine, I just plug it directly to my laptop...
But how do I let iTunes (or iTunes library) know that this is the same hard drive where all my media is stored when it's plugged directly into the laptop as opposed to trying to access it from my Airport Extreme network?

No there isnt any files call library in the folder i created I am now in the process of copying them back but I guess I will loose all my playlists and playcounts. I do have a Copy of my drive that i made with carbon copy cloner. So maybe it will be best to boot from there, restore and start again.
Chris it was just the media folder. I was following the instructions on the apple support page. Got to point 14 didn't get the warning but did seen to have a brand new itunes, so emptied the trash as they said expecting everything to be fine but it wasnt.

Is there an option that someone knows about that would keep this from happening?
no, if iTunes can't find its drive/folder, it defaults to creating one within your Home directory's Music folder.
If anyone knows a way I send a product suggestions to apple please let me know, as I have a few that would like to suggest.

  • Front Row 'Sources' not finding media server

    Hi all!
I use my Mac Mini as a media server for my apple TV and all my computers/macs with iTunes.
Everything works fine apart from Front Row on my MacBook that only seems able to find my local machine under sources.
    Any ideas?

You are not alone. I am experiencing the same problem.
We have consolidated all of our music and videos (much if it purchased via iTunes) onto a NAS media server. Our Macs have no problem seeing the server either from within iTunes or QuickTime Player. Yet, trying to find it using Front Row is impossible. There are no menu source options other than one's own mac or, alternatively, the iTunes Server mothership.
Either this is an oversight in the way Front Row was written, or more likely, it's some Draconian control issue decided in Cupertino.
For anyone who's acquired a lot of content (all legally, too, I might add) and stores it externally of his/her mac, this issue makes Front Row useless.

  • Front Row displays desktop when streaming a TV show from a shared library

I recently bought South Park series 9 from the iTunes store on my iMac. I have a Macbook that is currently being used as a media server, being hooked up to a Samsung LCD TV.
The other day I was happily watching one of the episodes via Front Row on my Macbook through the TV, when it suddenly displayed the error message "Cannot play this video" (Or similar). When I went to go back into the episode, it displayed the "There are no shared movies" error message.
After a while, I eventually re-connected to the iMac library, but now when I select a video, it displays the "Loading video..." screen in Front Row, then plays the Audio, but displays the desktop, as if Front Row is not there.
When the video plays in iTunes it plays fine, and this only happens with the shared videos in the iMac's iTunes library.
    Anyone have any ideas?

CubaMAN is correct. This issue is due to the most recent version of iTunes. It's also, specifically, due to the version of iTunes on the computer that's running Front Row, not the computer that's sharing the videos. I would suggest you send Apple some iTunes feedback. There's an option for a "feedback type" of "Bug Report":
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
If you can, temporarily, move the videos to the MacBook, they'll play just fine directly.

  • Front Row Causing Errors

Hi all... My FrontRow keep crashing on me, I only just got my iMac 2 days ago... Should I take it back? Also I watched a DVD on FrontRow and that was fine, half way through I stopped it turned off the computer and went away... Anyway coming back I turned on the computer and DVD Player opened up to play the DVD, now If I go into FrontRow it see's there is a DVD in the computer, but doesn't play it... I click play the screen goes black for about a minute and then FrontRow quits... Any ideas anyone?

Same here, I use a Mac Mini as a media centre with Elgato EyeTV and Front row, it's great, but for the bugs, there were plenty in Tiger, and plenty in Leopard too. The DVD playing in front row is terrible as it plays through quicktime/tunes, It would be better if it uses the DVD player software. The DVD menus rarely work correctly with the Apple remote in Front Row, I reported this as a bug ages ago.
I have also had one crash of Front Row, especially after waking from sleep.
Try removing the com.apple.frontrow.plist file from your Library/Preferences folder in both the main Library folder of the hard disk, and your Home Directory. Also, Delete the Caches folder of your Home Directory/Librray folder and reboot. Good luck!

  • PowerBook wake on Sleep-then kernel panic when re-mounting External Drives

Hey all, I found a peculiar behavior with my PowerBook and my Lacie External Hard Drive. If I wake up my PowerBook from sleep, either by shaking the mouse, or opening the lid- the computer sometimes kernel panics when it attempts to re-recognize my partitioned 250 gig external hard drive. This seems to happen 1 out of every 5 times. The external is already mounted that I can tell upon waking; its just that it seems like it panics when it tries to recognize it again. Any one else experienced this? I've had this problem since I've had my external drive, and that probably dates back to 10.4.2. Thanks!

    Hi, Zach.
You might want to try a different FireWire cable, a different FireWire port on your Mac (if available), or contact LaCie, the latter as the enclosure may be malfunctioning. Another potential problem area, although this also usually shows up as spontaneous dismounts of the FireWire drive, is the FireWire drive's power supply, i.e. its power brick, but that seems less likely here.
While it certainly seems like you've isolated the cause to the FireWire drive, you may also want to review my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics. The FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work systematically through the end, i.e. the "If all else fails..." section.
    Good luck!

  • Front Row shuts down when ever I click on the movies button

I have read through the majority of issues on the DQ board. My problem differs as I can use iTunes, DVD, and iPhoto through Front Row but when ever I select Movies it just closes unexpected and I am back to the desktop.
Have rebooted, no go. I only have 2 movie files (less that 50megs each), no go. I am in the admin account.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    jz

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Can you create a new use with the Accounts System Preferences, log out and log in as the new user? Do they encounter the same trouble? (With or without any movies in the new "Movies" folder? If they do encounter the same issue, then you have a system-wide or hardware problem. (It's doubtful it's a hardware problem.) Is your Front Row up-to-date? The current version is 1.3. Is your QuickTime up-to-date? The current version is 7.1.6. Since videos are played through the QuickTime Player (even if they live in iTunes), it's important that both Front Row and QuickTime are up-to-date.

  • Front Row comes on when watching Apple TV.

I've searched the Community Forums and all the questions relating to this are from 2011. and discussions are locked. When I use my Apple TV remote, it opens iTunes and music starts. I escape from Front Row but it continues to open up. I don't want to change settings on Laptop or Apple TV unless I know what I'm doing. Also, my first time posting after years of lurking and finding solutions. Couldn't find this one.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If you don't want to use a remote with your computer the easiest thing to do is just to turn the IR off. (System Preferences > Security > General, click on the Advanced button in the bottom right corner - If the button is greyed out, click on the lock icon and enter your administrators password))
If you still want to use your computer remote then you must pair your computers remote with the computer AND the Apple TV remote with the Apple TV.
To pair a remote with a device hold down the menu and FF buttons together for six seconds or until you see a chain icon on screen (best take the computer into another room, or turn it off, when you do this)

  • Front Row blacks out when I try to play DVDs or movies

Those same DVDs and movies play fine in DVD Player and Quicktime respectively. But when I try and play them in Front Row, I keep getting a black screen on the TV. It's only started happening in the last couple of days, so I suspect a bad update. I have played movies before in Leopard's Front Row without any problems.
Interestingly, when the screen goes black (and the TV tells me it's lost its signal), if I connect in via screen sharing from my laptop, the screen comes back immediately. If I disconnect from screen sharing, the picture on my Mac Mini goes dead again.
My setup is a Mac Mini connected to a Panasonic HD Plasma screen via a VGA lead (as HDMI doesn't work properly).

I submitted this as a bug and got the following follow-up email:

  • Storing media on external drive - huge mess

I recently transferred my complete iTunes library to an external drive, connected over a network. The process went smoothly and there were NO problems. However, after a recent update (I think this was the cause anyway), something isn't right.
Now, when I open In iTunes there is a little "house" under file in the menu bar. This allows me to access the iTunes library or the GoFlex (external) library. When I click on iTunes, only my downloaded (i.e., purchased from iTunes store) music appears, yet none of this music is stored on my local system. When I go to GoFlex, all my album art is now gone (it was there when I originally made this move) and I have music that is NOT from my original library. Instead, it is from the other computer that backs up to this external drive, though in a totally different folder.
When I go to the iTunes media folder, via the file explorer, all my music is there. When I go to Edit / Preferences then the Advanced tab, the network drive is correct.
Is it best to move all the music back to my PC and start over? Perhaps storing on an external isn't the best but my new computer has a solid state drive which means less storage.
I hope all of this makes sense.

The following user tips may help.
    Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash
    Make a split library portable
Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy
