Front row deleted after archive + install

I was having some problems with my, mac, archived + installed, 2nd disk was bad, took mac into store, they archived and installed, now I don't have front row. Where can I get it, or do I have to wait till I get a new disk or take it back to the store?

Insert your Mac OS X install disk that came with your Mac (you do NOT need to startup from the disk) and double-click on the "Install Bundled Software Only" option. After selecting the destination, there is a "Customize" button where you can uncheck or check on all of the additional software that shipped with the Mac. If Front Row is all you need, just uncheck all of the other options and make sure Front Row is checked "on". Then continue with the installer.
When you have reinstalled Front Row, use Software Update to get latest update for Front Row.

Itunes won't start, iPhoto / Front Row Hang after Leopard install

I upgraded a Intel 2.0MHz 24" iMac this morning. I have never had any upgrade problems before. Last night the iLife 8.1.1 update was installed. Was using iTunes all morning. I got my Leopard CD via Fedex and popped it in. Install went smoothly with no issues. The only thing out of the ordinary during the installation was that I hit cancel when the Time Machine setup opened because I don't have a hard disc ready for it yet.
All seems to be OK except for iTunes, iPhoto, and Front Row.
1. iTunes hangs every time I try to start it and I have to Force Quit. Library is on an external drive that is available and working in Finder.
2. iPhoto will open and show my library, but hangs anytime I chose Edit. Library is on main drive, but I have preferences set not to have iPhoto copy items to the library. I tried rebuilding library but that hangs too.
3. Front Row hangs when I choose music or movies. I can't exit it and have to do a hard shutdown.
This is my first disappointment since switching about six months ago. Any insight on how to fix this would be appreciated. I am fully backed up prior to install, but it was not a bootable backup.

I seem to have located the problem. I disabled my Perian install and iTunes, iPhoto, and Front Row started working. I also reinstalled the MPEG2 support for Quicktime, but I believe Perian is what fixed the issue.

Putting Front Row on an Ibook late 2004 after archiving & installing 10.5

install the program. Then go to the utilities folder and start terminal. In the terminal window paste the following and press enter:
additemtodock /Applications/Front\ Row.app
front row will appear in dock. you can then run front row-minus the remote control which ibooks don't have.

You don't need to wait for an application to run to keep it in the Dock, Front Row included. And you don't need to add a utility or to use Terminal to do this.
Instead, just navigate in the Finder to the Applications folder (or wherever it is stored) & drag it from the Finder window to the Dock.

Deleting folder after Archive & Install...

Hello.....A couple of months ago I did an archive and install and for some reason which is unclear to me now I never deleted the Previous Systems folder. The Previous Systems folder is on the HD.
I'm trying to clear off my HD now and have also run across another Applications folder. When I click on the Hard Drive and then click on Applications there is another applications folder in the list and I click on it and it looks the same at the first Applications. .
My question is this: Can I delete the PS folder and the "other" applications folder and not lose anything or do I need to some further checking? Would any new downloads since the Archive & Install show up in both 'Applications' folders?

Sorry if this wasn't clear. The applications folder that is showing in the list (see above) appears to be a copy (it shows everything the same as the other one...of course, I haven't opened each item and looked to see if anything is different) of the APPLICATIONS first clicked on...if you can follow my directions above...LOL

Front Row GONE after A&I...

Hey y'all,
Just tried activating Front Row - didn't work with the remote or the keyboard (on my MacBook).
Had a look in Core Services, and the Front Row app is gone!
I did an Archive & Install a few days back, and Front Row always worked before them (heck, because it was INSTALLED and THERE)...
Any ideas how to get it back? Is there an installer on the included discs that I could use Pacifier to get to and install it?
Argh!

I'm am having the same problem. I just did an Archieve and Install on a Mac Mini.
Front Row app is gone. It is still in the Core Services folder of the previous System but not in the new one.
Doing a search for it does not show anything except the old .plist file.
I guess I'll give Apple a call...
I wonder what else is gone...

Front Row Quits after entering 'Movies' Folder

I have just erased my harddrive and reinstalled OSX on my 18" iMac (1.8ghz, 512ram). Had some problems with the main applications which i rectified by using the bundled software cd and uninstalling programmes such as iphoto and reinstalling them.
Front row on the other hand, quits after i enter my movies file. All other aspects of front row seem to work fine though. I would uninstall and reinstall front row, however, as i understand it, it's not actually an appllication, and so cannot be uninstalled. Can anybody help me rectify this issue?

Your profile indicates Mac OS X 10.4.8, is there a reason you haven't updated to the current version of Mac OS X which is now 10.4.10? Is your QuickTime up-to-date with version 7.2? Is your Front Row up-to-date with version 1.3.1? Is your iTunes up-to-date with version 7.4.2? Each of those updates have recently fixed various issues that have come up with one module of Front Row or another. Did you use the Perian plug-in or Flip4Mac with QuickTime before? You'll need to re-install those QuickTime plug-ins as well.

Time Machine no longer backs up after archive & install

I have just had something mysterious happen to my Macbook - it spontaneously shut down, then wouldn't restart past a gray screen with Apple logo. After trying every troubleshooting page I could find, I ended up doing an archive and (re)install of Leopard on my hard drive. (btw, I ran the Disk Utility hard drive diagnostic, and it said the HD is fine, though I'm skeptical because it's making new noises I've never heard before.)
I finished that install, restarted, everything seemed fine, and I re-connected the external hard drive that had been used for my Time Machine backups before. Now, every time it attempts to back up, it's stuck on "preparing" for 30 minutes, then starts copying SLOWLY and the progress bar says "6 KB of 10 GB." Well, I have a lot more than 10 GB to back up. Then the process halts and I get an error message: "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume." And I can't get any more specific information about the error - can't find a log file or anything.
I know that there's a troubleshooting article about Time Machine issues with only backing up 10 GB, but mine doesn't even get that far, and besides, this is not my first Time Machine backup - I have no other external drive big enough to transfer my older data to while I reformat this drive as the support article suggests.
I was thinking that perhaps a system setting got messed up somehow and that maybe I should just forget this archive & install thing I did and instead do a fresh erase & install on my Macbook hard drive and then restore from Time Machine's old backup (a day or so before my Macbook started acting weird). But 1. would that make a difference? And 2. if Leopard gives me an error while backing up in Time Machine, what if I do the erase & install and I get an error trying to restore from Time Machine? That would be a nightmare.
My Macbook has always been so reliable - I'm very confused about what's going on! Any help would be appreciated.

Issues, iphoto won't open after archive install.

Hi there, got issues here. Previously I had accidently deleted a very important file in private/var/ and had to do a archive install. The shop swapped out my original 500 GB and put in a 2 TB. Great, turned it on, everything looks good. However, couple things not going so well. My pro apps aren't working but thats in another thread and now, I went to open iphoto and it won't open, says:

No I do have a back up Its kinda long to explain but last a little over a week ago, i delete a important file in my private/var folder and screwed up my computer. Worst part was I didn't run time machine for almost a month that way all my pics that I did bring on weren't backup up. i know this sounds careless but normally does happen like this. Anyway I had to take my imac into to get it fixed and the only way to do it without losing all my data was to do an archive and install and of course my drive was full so they had to swap it out and they put in a 2 TB and ya, so now I am where I am at. Everything is here but got pro app and iphoto issues. I guess worst case scenario if something does go wrong on the install I kinda do have a back up as the old drive can be put into a enclosure and used as a HD but I guess it is a bootable drive so I don't know if it would mount properly. Playing movies in Front Row one after another automatically?

I have a number of short video clips that I can watch with Front Row. However, every time a clip ends, I have to go and click “play” on the next clip and this is annoying. I am wondering if there is a way to make movies play one after another without stopping. Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the help. I'm still thinking there must be SOME way to pull this off. It seems like Mac's can do just about anything if you take the time to figure it out. Why wouldn't the people who designed Front Row not add this feature? It doesn't make any sense. There has to be a way. Anybody else have any ideas?

Front Row 1.2.2 Installed On 17" MacBook Pro

Front Row on the 17" MacBook Pro is version 1.2.2.
I only had limited exposure to 1.2.1 on my first 15" MBP. From what I can tell, 1.2.2 brings new sound effects for each menu category (Movies, DVDs, Pictures, and Music). Also, when viewing trailers and waiting for one to load, the message "Loading Trailer" appears at the bottom alongside a loading pinwheel.

My music is on an NFS share, but I think the same principles apply. Before updating to 1.2.2 from 1.2.1 I was getting an error "Front Row cannot play this song". Then I would go to iTunes and start playing it, stop it, go to FR again, and this time it would play the song.
Now that I have updated to 1.2.2 the only thing that changes is the error message. It now says "FR is not authorized to play this song...blah...blah". The same workaround still applies: Go to iTunes, start playing the song, stop it, go to FR again, and this then it will play it.
The only problem with this workaround is that I have 10,000 MP3 songs, and I can do this to each song I want to play after each time Mac OS boot.
I really hope that Apple Tech Support/R&D are readying this thread.

QTPro shows reg# but not enabled after archive install

I bought QT Pro when it was 7.0.3 & Pro features worked fine. Then I recently 'archive & installed' my OSX to fix other bugs. Now QT doesn't launch as Pro, even though my 7.0.3 registration # does come up in the registration section. I have not upgraded QT since then, not going to re-buy Pro over and over, and can confirm that it is still 7.0.3 I'm running. Any ideas? Please help.

I think I figured it out. My ATI 9600Pro video card was missing some drivers after the archive/install. I read somewhere that archive/install doesn't necessarily archive eeeeverything.
Anyway, when I launched the ATI monitor program (on a lark) it said 'yo, I'm missing a few things, load up that DVD driver disk again." So I did and badabing, problem appears to have been solved.
QT still doesn't technically SAY it's pro still, but all the features are still there. So that's still a little wierd, but probably a different issue.
So thanks all for the efforts. Hopefully this'll help someone else someday.

Front Row disappeared? Re-installing Front Row?

My Macbook came with Front Row installed, but I haven't used Front Row in a few months. Today, as I wanted to use it, it wasn't there anymore in my applications folder. When I searched for it in Spotlight, I found two files:
1. FrontRow.pkg
2. FrontRowUpdate1.3.pkg
Both are located in the Library\Receipts Folder.
When I tried to reinstall FrontRow using either of these files, the installer starts and leads me through the installation process. However, it doesn't complete the installation citing "errors".
Can anyone explain what might have happened? Is there a way to re-install FrontRow from the OSX CDs or to download it from the website? Thanks for any help.

Yes, Front Row does not live in the Applications folder. Because it lives in the "System" folder, Spotlight won't find it. Spotlight specifically ignores the System folder.
The two files you found, in the "Receipts" folder are indications that Front Row and the Front Row 1.3 update have already been installed. (The Software Updated looks in there to see if you're up-to-date or not.) They are just "receipts" for the previous install, they're not full installer files.
If you had needed to, you can re-install Front Row only by running the "Install Bundled Software" utility on your Mac OS X install disk. There's a "customize" window where you can manually turn on or turn off the additional software, like Front Row, that was included with your Mac.

Reset Mail & Address Book prefs back after Archive & Install

Please let me know what files I need to move around to get back my old mail files & address book. Also some of my programs won't start. They say they are missing files. What do I do?

Okay, here is the whole story with this:
I left on vacation & came back 7 days later. As I booted & began to try to download my vacation pics from my camera, it seemed really slow, so I had to force shut down. When I tried to reboot, it doesn't get past the gray screen with the apple & progress indicator. It just spins & spins but goes nowhere. I have seen where people have posted that they came back after a couple hours & their computer was working. No luck here, I left it on all day while I was at a work, & it was still stalled at the same spot when I came home. Below are the things I have tried:
1. DiskWarrior. (I can get it to boot from the CD using the C command on startup.) It ran through replacing the directory. Found a bunch of errors but fixed them. Shows the hard drive is fine. After rebooting & the computer still stalling, I tried DiskWarrior again but it showed nothing wrong.
2. Tried zapping PRAM & NVRAM. No luck.
3. Disk Utility. I ran disk utility. It found no disk errors. Tried again, still stalls.
4. Tried holding down shift key to start in safe mode, but it does nothing at all.
5. I did a search on Apple.com & found where it said to find the file BaseSystem.pkg & get it into /Library/Receipts. Replaed the file with the one from the Tiger install CD. Still stalls.
6. Decided to just go do an Archive & Install to replace the old system, but it won't let me. Says I have a newer version & have to do a clean install. This would cause me to loose a bunch of important files that I haven't backed up lately (I know! I know! I'm bad!!!). Freaked a bit.... It would take me forever to burn cds of all my files...
7. OS 9. So I thought I would try to startup in OS 9.2, & that works. So I am assuming that it is an issue with OS X Tiger.
8. I also tried to boot up without anything plugged in but the keyboard & mouse. Still stalled.
9. I also tried repairing the permissions using Disk Utility from the Tiger CD, but it gave me an error "No Valid Packages".
10. Also, I also held down Command V & this is the jabberwacky that come up:

Kept trying and trying & got it to let me verify/repair the permissions. Then I verify/repair the disk. Everything was fine. I was able to back up all my document files in OS9. But I still had them because the I did the archive & install. But the inbox for my mail, along with my address book (& some other stuff I am sure I will miss soon) I would like to get back to normal. Please let me know if this is possible.

HDV codec missing after Archive & Install?

I use FC Studio (FCP 5.0.4), QT 7.2
Last Thursday I began importing HDV for a project from a Sony HDR FX-1E (HDV 1080i) with all the capture settings set properly. Capture results were fine.
Yesterday I had to Archive and install Tiger due to some severe font issues which were affecting the performance of the machine.
Today it seems some of QT's HDV codecs have gone missing, even with the software updated and running. I can open the clips in QT and hear sound, but no picture, only white screen. I can't set sequences properly in FCP either. It tells me a codec is missing and it sets the QT compressor automatically to "animation".
Is there any way to solve this? Do I have to reinstall FCP? I am already seeing my monday morning deadline slipping away! If anyone can offer any advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you do... After an archive & install quicktime is reinstalled in its standard configuration... The HDV codec is ususally installed by FCP...

Password Rejected after Archive Install

Recently, I messed up my mac while playing round with system theme settings, so after browsing the net for a bit I found the only option to be an Archive Install, as I didn't want to lose my data. Once this had finished, all seemed to be fine. The login screen came up with my icon, and it took me to the password screen. All normal. Then I tried entering my password, and it was rejected.
So I'm currently locked out of my repaired computer. Any solutions or links, please post! I've seen several instances of problems when upgrading to leopard from early versions of OSX, but none of when it's been simply reinstalled to fix errors.
