Front Row DVD Playback

When ever I watch a DVD in front row, the progress bar appears at the change of every title. In the middle of the movie when it changes layers it pops up on screen. Does anyone know of a way to stop this?
Thanks

I got on the discussion board to see what people were saying about the new front row. I read your entry and thought I would see if I would experience the same problem. Sure enough I did. I put a DVD in that I had watched a few days ago before leopard came out and it would play perfectly in the old Front Row. Now it is so choppy! Sorry, I can't help you with a solution, but at least you know now you aren't the only one having this issue.

  • Does Front Row DVD player have any options and preferences?

Are there any preference options for watching DVD's in Front Row?
I have been watching DVD's on my Mac through the DVD Player which has lots of useful options like Zoom and De-Interlace etc. But DVD player leaves the mouse pointer on screen and Front Row seems to be a better way to watch films.
My problem with Front Row is when I play a DVD like West Wing it needs to be zoomed to fill my 17inch screen and it needs to be played De-Interlaced. I can't find any way to access options in Front Row DVD player to do this. With no mouse pointer I can't get a drop down menu so is there a short cut key that would give me some options?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the forums!
But DVD player leaves the mouse pointer on screen
Not if you drag it to the bottom of the screen.
Front Row seems to be a better way to watch films.
Debatable for the reasons you mention!
I much prefer VLC to DVD Player:
You should definitely consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.

  • Front Row DVD Player settings

I would like to have the front row dvd player use the settings from my Apple DVD Player but it seems the current version of front row does not use those settings. On my TV, a 1080p sony display, the image quality is highly depended on these settings.
On previous versions of Front Row, this was not the case. There is no Apple documentation that I was able to find outlining why this limitation is in place nor any workarounds. I was also not able to find a way to downgrade to the previous version to restore functionality either.

You can't view cover art with the DVD Player. You never specified that you're using Video_TS folders, how could we have anticipated that? Maybe you should have provided that information up front. You will need a mouse. If you don't have a mouse and a keyboard and Front Row is not the solution for you, maybe the Mac mini is not the right option for your media needs? Perhaps you could turn on sharing via VNC and remote control your Mac mini from one of your other "many" Macs? There probably are solutions/options available to you, but if we don't understand the original situation, we're not going to be able to provide you with solutions.

  • How do I keep the screen from dimming in Front Row DVD Player

Nothing against the standard DVD Player program, but when I'm using the remote Front Row has more functionality. When I use it plugged in, there is no problem, but on battery power the screen auto-dims like normal and then brightens again and dims again...on and on. It proves to be very distracting.
Is there any way anybody knows to keep the screen from dimming like that while im in front row DVD player?
    Newmac

Go to System Preferences > Energy Saver and change the time for screen dim in your prefs for battery operation. You can always change the setting back to the existing setting later, if you like.

  • 10.5.3 and Front Row DVD player crashes

I have been using Front Row with 10.5.2 to play DVDs - seamless experience
Upgraded to 10.5.3 and have been getting regular crash out of front row to home page.
    Is this a known issue?

    Rasterblaster wrote:
Start frontrow GUI using the iMAC remote 'menu' button.
Select DVD and play via the Frontrow GUI using remote only to pass through menu
    Symptom seen:
In the middle of DVD playback MPEG codec glitch (i.e. blocks formed when b or p frames not propertly decode), on other occasions playback stops, image changes to the desktop (what ever it is called in mac speak) then after about 1/2 secs the playback resumes.
Yesterday spotted after I finished watching the standard leopard DVD player icon was left on the screen with an error code (sorry I didn't note the code).
This has happened with a couple of DVDs from the same box set (disk is clean/not scratched). The issue didn't happen with 10.5.2 (but different box set). So I don't know if Apple played with the DVD player in 10.5.3 or its integration with frontrow?
All the readme for 10.5.3 says about video is
''Addresses an issue with stuttering video and audio playback in certain USB devices"
This is not directly related but you never know?
Did you do the usual HD and permissions repair before and after upgrading?

  • Front Row/music playback issue

    Hi all,
I have a rather large music library in iTunes and I have my Mac Mini attached to my stereo and TV. I use Front Row for music playback. Recently, I have been having trouble as the music will "stall" randomly or "freeze" for a couple seconds, then resume playing. Very annoying.
I've noticed that this problem does not seem to happen if I select the music from iTunes without Front Row running or if I use FR to select the music, then back out of FR with the little remote.
Anyway, I prefer to keep FR running. I've seen LOTS of articles and posts regarding video freezing with FR, but not music. Anyone know what's wrong?
    Thanks!

I have the same problem on my macmini. :/
And I too like to leave Front Row playing songs while I do other thing in my house.
It hangs in almost every song now, it never did that before. I wonder if it's this iTunes update...
Is there someone else with the same problem, or someone that could help us solve that?

  • Front Row - DVD - Widescreen

    Hi All,
I just bought a new Mac Mini (Intel Core Duo) and i am having trouble getting widescreen movies to play in widescreen in Front Row.
I have managed (using the Video Zoom function) to get them to play in DVD Player, but even though I have saved the settings (they play in Widescreen in DVD Player everytime now, without any adjustment) my DVD's still wont play in widescreen in Front Row.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    All software patched and updated.
    Thanks
    Matt

Hi, this feature was kinda avail before i upgraded front row to the current version. If you put a dvd in, then go to dvd player, select the zoom you want, THEN go to front row, the zoom is effective (ie now with teh update dvd player is closed when you go into front row.)

  • Audio Problem Front Row DVD

    Hi:
Playing a DVD via front row and through a tv, the sound was going up and down, tested it with another dvd and it was the same. Could be it the cabel which is Philex SLx Gold 3.5mm jack to 2 Phono Personal Audio Lead?
BTW sound playing music through front row and through the tv speakers produces no issue
    mac mini 1.66 dc | ibook 12" | MBP 17" Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Since you're playing a DVD in stereo only (not multi-channel surround sound) with that cable, is it possible that the "downmixing" from multi-channel audio is not being handled very well? Does your DVD have an audio option for 2.0 Stereo only?

  • Front Row & DVD close captioning

Will Front Row allow use of close captioning for dvds that do not have subtitles?

I tried this with .srt and Quicktime .txt files, and with movies in .m4v and .avi format. I tried them in iTunes, Quicktime Player, and Front Row. In none of them did the subtitles show up by putting them in the same folder. I downloaded what seems to be the SRT import bundle you're referring to from here:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/25631
I've also tried opening the videos in Quicktime Pro and adding the text track, but then I can't seem to toggle it on and off in iTunes or Front Row. If I open it in Quicktime Player, I can toggle subtitles on and off by going to the Movie Properties and toggling the checkbox for the Text Track, but it seems like I should be able to get it to actually recognize that text track as a track for subtitles/CC.
I'm sorry if this is moving a bit away from the original question about DVDs and more into the arena of closed captioning for video files in general; I'll create a new thread if need be.

  • Front Row: DVD audio Controls

Is there way to scroll through various audio channels while playing DVD's in front row? For example I want to jump from the regular audio channel to the Director's Commentary...is there a short cut to do this?
    jon

There is no way to do this with Front Row. However, this can be done with the regular DVD Player application. The on screen "controller" for the DVD Player can give you direct access to different audio channels or video angles.

  • Front Row - DVD won't play

I can't get Front Row to play DVD, I would only get "DVD Loading" then a blank screen. Any fix?

Can you play the movie with the DVD Player application? Is the Mac asking you to choose a region code before it can play a DVD movie? Front Row won't display this dialog but the DVD Player should.

  • 1.66 Core Duo, Front Row - DVD - no 5.1

Hello. I just picked up a mini for a home server / shared media viewer and after setting it up, popping in a DVD and firing up Front Row to see what it could do I find I'm not getting 5.1 out. I do have the optical digital plugged in yet all I get is 2 channel stereo.
I know Apple says you can connect to a 5.1 home theater stereo with optical input but there is nothing specifically stating the mini OUTPUTS 5.1.
Is there something I'm missing? Does anyone have it working for DVDs?
Mac mini, 1.66 Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Simple fix:
    1. Launch DVD Player (it's in the Applications folder).
    2. Open DVD Player menu > Preferences and choose Disk Setup.
    3. In the "Audio output" dropdown box, select the internal optical output instead of "System Sound Output".
Even though DVD Player seems like a separate application from Front Row, the settings you make in DVD Player apply to both.

  • How to make front row remember playback position of avi files?

    Hi,
Is there a way to make front row remember the last playback position of an avi file?
It can be frustrating having to forward to the last platback position when resuming viewing a media file.
    nj

If you load the file into iTunes then Front Row will then remember its last playback position.
Not ideal I know, but it appears to be the only workaround currently.

  • Front Row Movie Playback Suggestions

    Intro....
I'm loving the new front row, especially since i can watch my Video_TS files. After using the software for a few weeks, I've realized a behavior. I want to watch movies at home similar to the movie theater. Specifically, I want to watch trailers before my selected movie.
    Suggestion....
    1. User selects movie, in my case under the movie folder
    2. One randomly chosen trailer plays from the Theatrical Trailers section
    3. Another randomly chosen trailer plays (the amount could be a preference)
    4. A 10 sec intro movie welcoming people to my theater (I even tell people to shut off phones
    5. Feature presentation
    Conclusion....
I believe this will be a great option. Good for Apple because more people will watch the trailers. Good for users who like to watch trailers (in the theater you don't select your trailers), and good for people who have a custom movie intro (like me and Kaleidescape users). Seems like an easy thing to incorporate.
Any additional suggestions to this. If there is an applescript that can do this, please let me know.

The green status bar at the bottom shows how much data frontrow needs to grab before it thinks it can start playing the video. It doesn't show the amount of data transfered relative to the total file size. If the bar is 100% green it means that frontrow thinks there's enough of a cache to start playing the file without interruption until the end. By the time it's finished playing this cache more data will have already downloaded so it can keep playing etc etc.
In other words, it hasn't downloaded the Star Trek trailed 8 times. It starts playing before the whole thing downloads but then stops when it runs out of data to play. Basically, the cache is set too small for your connection. There's a preferences for this kind of think in the Quicktime system preferences panel but there doesn't seem to be one for Front Row. Its suppose to be automagic... unfortunately it looks horribly broken. Very very distracting actually... makes the whole feature useless in my opinion.

  • DVD menu navigation in Front Row - HOW?

Just got my new iMac. When I start Front Row, insert a DVD and select "DVD" in Front Row, I select the menu.
Then what? The remote still controls volume only, front and back buttons do nothing. How do navigate the DVD menu and start playing the DVD?

Insert a DVD into your computer’s DVD drive.
Press the Menu button on your remote to open Front Row.
Use the Next and Previous buttons to choose DVD in the Front Row main menu, then press the Play/Pause button.
Use the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons to navigate the Front Row DVD menu. You can play a DVD, turn muting on and off, display the DVD's menu, and eject the disc.
An alert message appears if you haven't inserted a DVD into your computer's DVD drive. (The message may also appear if your computer hasn't finished reading the disc you've inserted.)
While a movie is playing, use the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons to adjust the sound volume. Press the Next and Previous buttons to jump to the next or previous chapter. Press and hold Next and Previous to fast-forward and rewind. While a movie is paused, press the Next button to advance to the next frame of the movie. Press the Menu button to stop the DVD and return to the DVD menus. Press the Menu button again to go to the Front Row DVD menu.
