Front Row Enabler

Has anyone downloaded Ralph Perdomo's Front Row Enabler to Lion, and was it successful?

There are limitations. See http://www.mac-hatter.com/blog/frontrowenablerforlion for details.

  • How do I uninstall Front Row Enabler (Andrew Escobar) ??

    hey everybody
im on a powerbook g4 (power pc) and on 10.4.7
i did that stupid andrew escobar - Front Row Enabler so I could have Front Row on my non-infared powerbook.
it seemed like a cool idea for awhile, now i am in desperate need to update to 10.4.11.
it says in many forums that if you install any 10.4.8 - 10.4.11, front row's bezel patches will crash your computer into a blue screen and you will not be able to login.
i am nervous to update, but i am in desperate need to. does anyone here know how to uninstall this Front Row Enabler? if you would be so kind, that would be great.
    thanks,
    smitt

actually i answered my own question
i located the front row app, deleted it
then i redownloaded my 10.4.7 PPC pkg from Apple
then using pacifist (free DL at versiontracker) i extracted the 2 bezel files (that front row enabler patched to get Front Row to work on a non-Front Row working machine)
i then replaced the corrupted 2 bezel files with the original 10.4.7 bezel files (non-patched) and simply restarted and now it allowed me to update to 10.4.11
    here's the specific instructions, smittay
    Manually Uninstalling Front Row:
    1. Delete Front Row (/System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app).
    2. Download Mac OS X Update 10.4.7 Combo PPC from Apple.
    3. Open the disk image
    4. Download Pacifist and copy application to the Application folder.
    5. Use Pacifist to open the Mac OS X Update Installer package file (which ends in .pkg)
    6. Search for “bezel” and install only these two specific files folders:
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/BezelServices.framework/
    /System/Library/LoginPlugins/BezelServices.loginPlugin/
    7.Restart.

I need to know how to simply install Front Row onto my MacBook Air with Lion OX 10.7.4. Please help.

Front Row is indeed "gone." There are alternatives, but first look at these links:

  • Front row on 'power pc'

ive seen people running front row on the powerbooks and iBooks which "shouldn't" be doing that
Is this possible to do and if so how...

It is possible, but not recommended neither supported by apple. It is a hack, so you should keep in mind that it can mean a risk to your computer. However, if you are sure you want to do it just google "front row enabler" and you will get your answer.

  • Front Row on an ibook

I am using an 14" ibook G4. Do anyone know how to enable or install Front Row to an ibook G4?

Your iBook does not meet the Front Row requirements. It is not Front Row enabled.
    System Requirements
Mac OS X 10.4.5 or later
    Front Row enabled Mac
    However, from Douglas McLaughlin:
"Front Row is included for all Macs if you install Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). Note that Mac OS X 10.5 requires an 867MHz or faster G4 processor. It's possible, if you have the first model iBook G4, that you only have an 800MHz processor. If that's the case, then Leopard is not compatible with your iBook. But, if you have any other newer model iBook, you should be fine. I would be sure to max our your RAM for the best performance.
Since your iBook doesn't have an IR receiver, you'd have to buy a third party remote control. The Keyspan RF Remote for Front Row is specifically designed for use with Front Row. It's "radio" frequency rather than infrared so you don't need any line of sight between the remote and the computer. But, it does have a USB dongle."

  • Front Row IS Included

FWIW Front Row is included in the install DVD, and probably ships on the MP as well. You can use this --> http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/errf1/homepage.spml or this -->http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/urm15t/homepage.spml to control Front Row.

I got Front Row enabled on my Mac Pro with the help of this hint:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=2006110314322775
The basic principle is to trick Front Row into believing your mouse provided a Remote Control personality.
However, I am still keeping my hopes up that Front Row coming pre-installed on the Mac Pros means we will see updated Cinema Displays with integrated iSight and Remote Control Receivers. This would allow us to use Front Row without any hacks, so it would make sense for Apple to pre-install it.

  • How to install Front Row on PB 15"...

    Hello everyone,
I have heard a little "trick" that allows you to install Front Row on PowerBook 15". Using Pacifist (www.versiontracker.com)to install the package FrontRow Updates 1.0.1...Have anyone tried this before?
I have tried but it doesn't work...
    Any suggestion?
    Cheers,
    James
P.S. It is supposed to work only by Key Combination like Apple-Escape or something like that but I did not see the key combination in Key&Mouse Preference for Front Row.

Hi, James - I have Front Row installed on my PB and it works perfectly. In fact, I know a couple of people who are using their mobile phones as remote controls.
The problem may be that you need to install Front Row Enabler after installing Front Row. Restart after each installation. The Front Row keyboard shortcut should appear at the bottom of the list in System Preferences:
    Other key commands are:
Arrow Keys - spin and move up and down
    Option+Up/Down - set volume
Enter or Spacebar - select menu, playlist, song, movie, etc.
Escape - go back to previous menu/screen
    Tab - return to desktop

  • Is Front Row available for sale?

It looks like a great program, though it is only shipping with the newer models. Anyone know if can be downloaded or purchased?

The original hack was illegal as it distributed software which wasn't available for download.
The 1.0.1 update, however is available for download directly from the Apple site and it's pretty easy to get it to work.
You'll need Pacifist, which lets you open .pkg files and Front Row Enabler, which allows it to run on your Mac. Neither of these are illegal and are available at all of the update sites.
Funny thing is, Front Row works flawlessly on my MDD G4, but has an iPhoto communication error on my iSight iMac LOL
There's an open source program called center stage which was around well before Front Row ever came out - I assume this is the "copy cat" program referred to above.

  • 'Front Row' hack Backfired - I think ......

The problem I'm having started with the Optical Drive not responding to the Open/Close key. Then I noticed there are no System Preference icons in my Menu Bar - date & time / sound / displays / user ... it's empty. I discovered in sys prefs the the 'tick' marks for 'show in menu bar' won't stay ticked.
I think this is related to trying to get Front Row going on my G4 MDD with OS 10.4.11. After downloading and installing FR you need to download and run an app called 'Front Row Enabler'. It is supposed to 'enable' the cmd - esc key shortcut to launch FR. Well, it didn't work and I believe has corrupted my system preferences to the point of .... System Preferences crash when I try and get in to Keyboard Shortcuts and the other issues I mentioned above.
The read me that came with the 'enabler' says this:
    +1 - Download Front Row 1.0.1 from Apple.+
+2 - Install the package using Pacifist. (The installer won't run unless you have a new iMac.)+
+3 - Run 'Front Row Enabler' from the disk image. This will patch OS X (BezelServices.framework and BezelService.loginPlugin, to be exact) so it thinks you have an iMac G5 remote.+
    +4 - Reboot+
+5 - Open the Keyboard & Mouse Preferences and enable the Front Row shortcut under the Keyboard Shortcuts tab.+
+6 - Press cmd-esc and enjoy! (You may also change this shortcut in the Keyboard & Mouse Preferences)+
After I ran the enabler and rebooted I saw in Sys Prefs that the shortcut for FR had been automatically enabled, I did not have to select it. Believing at this point that the enabler did more than it was supposed to and failed at what it was supposed to do.
The issue is this .... I can't get my dvd drive to open. If i could I would simply reinstall my system, but ... no drive .... no install.
I've tossed sys prefs .plist among other things - at a loss.
    Help Please!

wishing it were that simple ... I have no dvd drive .... at least one that I can get opened. This computer has no 'precious' data on it fortunately, it's merely a family browsing / gaming computer and it was headed for fame as our HT media center.
found this http://voice.firefallpro.com/2006/03/front-row-enabler-bringing-back-your.html but the last half is no longer available on the internet; i.e. the latest enabler and andrews fix for removing FR. I have downloaded and reinstalled the bezel files as in the first part of the directions, also went in to terminal and did the permissions part. From there on though the files and info don't exist, at least through the links provided there.
    Any other thoughts please.

  • Any way to get Front Row to show video playlists such as TV shows?

I can get AppleTV now to show the TV show playlists in iTunes as their own menu items. However, I can't seem to get Front Row in 10.6 to do the same thing.
I currently have iTunes 8.2.1 in 10.6.0. Is this something either upgrading to 10.6.1 or iTunes 9 will enable?

Front Row users have been waiting for this option since video playlists first appeared in iTunes quite some time ago. Unfortunately, I've never been able to make it work. Why Apple can't enable what seems like a simple options is beyond me. My iPod nano can do it but Front Row on my Mac can't. I'd advise you to send Apple some Mac OS X feedback since there's no specific form for Front Row itself:

  • 2010 Mac Mini, Front Row and 5.1 Audio

I recently bought one of the new 2010 Mac mini's for my home theater. I have video going to my TV through HDMI. (I do not use the TV for audio.) I'm feeding audio to my receiver via optical. The problem I'm having is with 5.1 audio through Front Row. I've installed Perian and enabled AC3 passthrough. 5.1 audio works great when I play a video in iTunes (it also works with eyeTV). When I try to play the same movies through Front Row, I'm stuck with stereo audio and see no way to change it. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

I too have the latest mini, hooked up to a Denon receiver via pass-through HDMI.
I am not an audiophile in terms of setting up this stuff and just want to know what I need to do to get the optimum performance out of this mini, audio wise.
When I go to Audio MIDI Setup app, my receiver (DENON-AVAMP) is listed next to the "source" button. I have no clue about channels, bits, etc. When I click on the "Configure Speakers" button I am presented with different configurations so I selected "Multichannel" versus "Stereo". And I can see where you can test all 5 speakers and subwoofer, but I just don't know which "format" I am supposed to select.
The 5.1 mapping is shown when I select 8 channel/16 bit, 8 channel/20 bit, or 8 channel 24 bit. I can click on each speaker in this map and it tests properly no matter which one of the above combinations I select. Just not sure which one I am supposed to be using.
All I know is my Denon is a 5.1 system and all this works perfectly (getting 5.1 sound) with my Playstation 3 hooked up the same way to the Denon.
Does anybody know the correct settings to output 5.1 sound from this Mac Mini?
    Thanks guys!

  • Front Row on an External Display

**Note that this is for Leopard's Front Row and only may not apply to Tiger's**
Here's an explanation of the bugs/irksomes now facing Front Row
    1. The screensaver option can be buggy so go to preferences within Front Row to disable it.
    2. Whatever screen you use front row on, the other will be black.
    3. Front Row does not play video in mirroring mode, period.
    4. Front Row, when opened, will display on whatever monitor is set as your primary display at that time.
    5. Even after exiting it, if you check it the activity monitor it will still run in the background for 30 minutes (not sure on that time frame).
    6. If you open it up again before it is shutdown, it will try to display on whatever was set as the primary display when it was first launched.
Okay, now that you understand that, here is somethings to keep in mind
-When you initially open it, the settings get stuck, so if you opened it with the wrong display set as your primary monitor, just quit it in the activity monitor, switch the main monitor in your display system preferences, and then reopen it.
-You can trick it to display on your secondary display by enabling mirror-mode, opening front row, exiting front row (not quiting), disabling mirror mode, and lastly reopening front row. Effectively, it gets stuck to display on the external display and does so once you turn mirroring off. This isn't even remotely elegant but is my preferred method.
-If you have your external display connected while your computer is asleep, pressing a button on your remote will automatically wake it and use the external display as your primary/only monitor. This means that Front Row will display on your TV very easily if you put your computer to sleep then wake it with the remote BUT you must always be mindful that if you had opened it recently, you may have to quit it first.
The only last suggestion I have is that if you want quick and easy access to quitting front row, you can create an applescript to quit it with this
tell application "Front Row" to quit
If anyone knows how to change primary displays using applescripts please post as ideally a script could be created that would just make sure Front Row was quit, switch displays, then would open it streamlining the entire process.
Well really ideally apple would make Front Row a little more dynamic with the option to display on the external display and smart enough to know which one that is but this problem existed in the last version too and they never fixed it then so....

Well, just putting the display in sleep mode won't work as, for some reason I don't understand, sleeping the display turns off the external monitor.
Thinking a little more clearly now, the method of sleeping the computer only works for the portable Macs as the lid must be down while it wakes up for it to work.

  • Front Row refusing to play my iTunes store purchases!

This never happened before, but when I go to play songs on Front Row which I purchased from the store, it says my computer isn't authorised and to enable it by going to iTunes, clicking authorise and signing in to my account. I've done this several times, and even whilst clicking onto every song I purchased.
What makes it stranger, is if I open iTunes, start playing a song I purchased and then go to front row whilst it's still playing, and click 'now playing', it shows the song and artwork and the song continues playing as normal. Now that I'm in front row, if I browse to that song and try to play it, it comes up with that message.
    What is going on?!

    James,
You may see my previous posts. I had the self same problem until I installed 10.4.9, but that also included the Front Row 1.3 update. Did you include that in your update? That may be the solution as my problem has now been resolved. Also if you look up and down this forum there are a number of threads with solutions such as deleting the .plist files. It seemed to work for others, but not for me.
    Hope you sort it out
