Front row flickers constantly

Hi there,
I've recently made the conversion from pc to mac and bought a 20"imac with a 256 mb graphics card. Everything is okay aprt from when I try and launch frontrow. The display flickers really badly, the same happens when I play movies. However whenever I play a dvd not in frontrow ie just through iDVD, there is no flicker at all.
Is there anything I can do at all?

I personally have not experienced it. Since it only affects some models, I don't know if it is the video card, or not, but it sounds like it.
Here is an article from CNet about this: http://news.com.com/Displayproblem+affecting+some+InteliMacs/2100-1006_3-6037808.html

  • Streaming to Front Row constantly rebuffering

I'm running Front Row on a MacBook and trying to stream video from an iMac.
Both computers are connected with ethernet.
Front Row rebuffers every 10 minutes or so when I try to stream a video with a high bit rate, 4622 kbps for example.
The video is 45 minutes in length and takes only 4 - 5 minutes to copy between the two computers.
Activity Monitor indicates a transfer rate of approximately 10 MB/s when copying the file.
When streaming the file in Front Row, however, Activity Monitor indicates a transfer rate of approximately 500 KB/s. It also takes approximately 1 minute before it starts playing at all.
A video with a bit rate of 4622 kbps should require a transfer rate of 578 KB/s just to keep up.
Why does Front Row utilize so little network bandwidth? Are there any settings I can tweak? I'm frustrated that I need to copy the file over to the MacBook to watch it when Front Row should be more than capable of streaming it over the network.
    Thanks,
    Matt
P.S. I also tried to stream it directly from iTunes. iTunes doesn't seem to stream at all; it copies the movie over completely before it starts playing it. The network was utilized 10 MB/s for 3 or 4 minutes, the movie started playing and the network went idle.

Confirming the Front Row issue - Activity Monitor reports a maximum of ~530 KB/s when streaming a 4900 kbps movie (wirelessly). The movie takes a while to load, and rebuffers throughout.
Streaming from iTunes didn't work at all.
I also tried streaming the same movie to an AppleTV (wirelessly). Activity Monitor now reported 4+ MB/s, the movie played instantaneously, and it never rebuffered.

  • Front Row constantly rebuffering?

I've been using Front Row since August 2006 without a problem - mainly to stream trailers. However, in the last week or two a very odd problem has appeared: The video will appear to stream fully (as indicated by the blue bar filling up the progress bar) but then a few seconds later the bar will be at the halfway point again, restreaming the trailer. It seems to have to re-download the video it just cached... Which never happened before.

I have upgraded to Leopard, but not recently - I got it in November and it had been working fine up to this point. It doesn't do it with all trailers, however, which is strange.

  • Front Row issue

    Hi all,
I currently have an issue with front row video playback.
When I am playing AVI movies only through frontrow on the left hand side of the screen is a large white flickering bar.
When I play these same files through VLC it doesn't happen but through Realplayer, QT and more annoyingly Frontrow it does.
    Every other format is fine
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Frontrow uses Quicktime, so if you sole the problem in QT you'll solve the problem.
avi is a hold all for a wide variety of codecs. What's likely going on here is that QT is having trouble with the particular codec. What might work is to install Perian, which adds a large range of codecs to QT and increases the chances that it will play properly.

  • Front Row crashes when loading DVD

Hey, I hope someone can help with this, I am trying to use front row to play a DVD, but after a short while front row closes. Now, as soon as i tell it to play the DVD, when it tries to load it, it just turns off. There is no unexpected closure error message or option to report or anything, it just acts like I closed it. And help or info is appreciated, thanks.

I've actually been having the same problem.
First of all, my DVD player constantly takes forever to load a DVD and/or spits it out; then more recently, Front Row without fail will crash when a DVD ends. Even worse, lately, it won't even play the DVD after repeated attempts to start it.
It's extremely annoying and I can't figure out what to do.

  • A thought - Syncing for Front Row

I have 2 AppleTVs, several iPods, 3 Macs and 2 MacBooks in use around my house. We use Front Row on the 2 MacBooks a lot. Unfortunately we don't keep our Movies and TV Shows on the MacBook HDDs. They use shared libraries from two different iMac desktops, inside of Front Row. The other night I was using one of the AppleTVs and started to wonder if I could sync the MacBooks to the iMac desktops like I sync my AppleTVs, iPhone and iPods. That way when we're away from the house (like on Vacation) I could have the most recent Podcasts, TV Shows, Movies, etc. automatically on my MacBooks without having to manually move the files there.
Does anyone know if this is possible?
If so, how do I do that?
If not, any idea why it can't be done?

    I've got the problem.
    My config:
    1) build 8G1171.
    2) From system profile:
    Boot ROM version: IM41.0039.B00
    SMC: 1.1f2
    Chipset: ATY,RadeonX1600
    VRAM (totale): 256 MB
    Fornitore: ATI (0x1002)
    ID device: 0x71c5
    ID revision: 0x0000
    EFI version: 01.00.063
    3) I've partioned and therefore rinstalled the system. I don't know if yhe machine had the same problems with original factory installation.
    Summarizing:
*) Front Row video tearing and flickering with ghost images
*) iCal dragging window -> video tearing problem
*) Selecting a large amount of icons and dragging them in Finder -> video tearing problem
*) Second install DVD broken (still awaiting replacement from APPLE)
*) Runnig Apple Hardware test -> VRAM shows 128MB not 256 (It seems to be a minor bug), System Profile, instead shows 256MB.
Apparently I have no other problem with network (via ethernet or via airport) or USB (only right button on the migthy mouse, sometimes doesn't respond to the pression).
I don't have an idea if this is a software or hardware problem. I hope software because the machine is fantastic (outside the problems) and vide hasn't dead or broken pixel, so I'm not happy to substitute it.

  • Front Row shows artist names twice

    Hi,
I seem to have a re-appearing problem. I have an artist that has his name appearing twice in the Front Low artist list although in iTunes both of the albums (2 altogether) are under one artist name. I checked the actual files in iTunes folder and there is only 1 folder with the artist name..puzzled ??
is there a preference or something like that, that could cause the Front Row
so the artsit name twice ? Is there a way to check what artist names are
in a list that iTunes checks when it "guesses" what artist your about to write
    in the data field ??
    Thanks

I do have an iPod but none of these albums are synced there.
The Front Row list is my whole collection on a seperate account.
In fact I'm sure that the reason I have this trouble is this account as
I'm constantly mirroring my whole collection on 2 different Macs. I keep ripping on another Mac and then transering the audio files + the 2 iTunes data files
to the other Mac. I don't think it is misspelling AFAIK this should lead to two almost identically named artist folders and I have only one. Also like I said, I already sorted this out a month ago or so but now it seems to have re-appeared
    in Front Row.

  • Front Row crashes loading DVD

There are other topics similar to this one, but not exactly, so here goes...
More often than not, I can't play a DVD in Front Row. The disk goes in (or I hit "Menu" on the remote) and Front Row loads up. I select the DVD option, it indicates its loading the DVD, then it crashes to the desktop with no error messages.
This happens with both Mac-made DVDs and regular movie DVDs. They all play fine with just the DVD player app.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

  • Is there a way to open Front Row without the remote?

I wonder, is there some keyboard shortcut that will open front row?
I ask because a while ago I was about to force-quit an application(cmdoptesc), and then I cancelled(esc) that and toggled to another application's window(cmd+tab), etc., all of this using only the keyboard. But because of the application that wasn't working right, things got slow, and after waiting a couple of seconds for the other window to appear... Fron Row just appeared in front of me!!!
I don't know if it was some keyboard shortcut that i accidentally pressed, or just a bug. Does enyone know?

    Command + Escape
    arrow keys
    return
    and escape to bail

  • Remote for front row

I just upgraded to Leopard and was checking out Front Row. I can use the arrow keys to navigate but since I am on a Powerbook I have no remote or sensor to pickup one. I am curious if there are third-party remotes available for older Macs. I have an EyeTV Hybrid which came with a remote. Is it possible to use something like this with Front Row?

I too have a Powerbook running Frontrow and I just bought this off eBay for cheap. http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/errf1/ this is a remote made by Keyspan for Frontrow.

  • How to Delete Item from Front Row?

Someone sent me a short imovie project and it was automatically downloaded to my "Download" folder. When I opened Front Row, the project name it's right under "Movies" along with "iTunes Top Movies", "Theatrical Trailers" and "Movie Folder".
I then moved the project file from "Download" to another folder created under my "Movie" folder. When I went to Front Row again, the original project was still under the list in Movies, now it's also in "Movies Folder". So basically it's showing up twice in Front Row in different places.
I see that once I play the movie from my Movies folder directly from the folder, it's automatically set to Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Movies. So it's showing up in Front Row via iTunes, and it's also showing in Front Row via my Movies Folder.
I just want to organize Front Row so that I don't have a long list of projects immediately under "Movies" in Front Row. I want these projects to neatly go in one personal movie folder only.
Is there a way to reorganize the items list in Front Row?
How do I delete the item that's originally placed under "Movies" in Front Row?

Assets are organized in various apps - primarily iTunes for most of us.

  • How can I move Front Row to a different display?

I love using Front Row with my MacBook, but I'd love it even more if I could move Front Row from my main display on my laptop onto my second display--a TV screen. I own a Apple mini-DVI to RCA & S-video adapter, and I use this to connect to my TV screen. Obviously, I can get Front Row on my TV screen by turning on Mirror Displays or setting the TV screen as my main screen (dragging the menu bar icon to the second display in the Displays system preference), but both these methods require me to sacrifice use of my desktop on my laptop while I use Front Row.
Simply put, can I possibly (even sneakily) move Front Row to my second display? Thanks for any help.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately, since Front Row has no preferences you can actually change, there's no way to change the screen now. (Besides the work arounds you've already discovered.) I would send Apple some Mac OS X feedback (since Front Row is considered part of OS X, not a stand-alone application) and let them know you'd like to be able specify the screen. You're not the first person here to ask for that option.

  • MBP Clamshell Mode - DVI to TV Adapter - Front Row Works - But No Video?

    Hi all,
Have picked up an Apple DVI to TV adapter for my MB Pro. Have successfully got it to work in clamshell mode displaying Front Row on the TV without the external Mouse or keyboard.
However, it will not play videos or movies on the TV.
If I keep the lid open, it will play the video/movie on both displays as hoped. However, when I close the lid, all other Front Row stuff works - but no video picture! Is this some sort of overlay issue? How can I fix this? I do NOt want to burn my LCD when using it this way - would be a waste.
    Please pass on any thoughts!
    Thanks,
    Stu

I also have this exact same problem. A little annoying since I have just spent $A35 on the mini dvi to dvi adapter and another $A50 on a good quality DVI cable. My LCD tv is set to millions of colors so that is not the issue.
I have a 2.0Ghz Core2Duo Macbook. A quick google search If anyone knows how to fix it I'd be very grateful.

  • Can I use Front Row with my Macbook closed?

I just got a mini-dvi to video cable for my macbook. I love using front row with it but I was wondering if there was a way that you could use front row with the laptop closed. Oh and I'm using tiger, so its not the new version of front row.

With your computer attached to a keyboard you should be able to wake it from sleep and run it properly with the lid closed.
