Front Row Freezes During DVD

Whenever I start a DVD using Front Row, about 1 in every 5 times the screen will remain black and nothing will happen, and I can't even force quit to get out, I have to do a force shut down. This is infuriating when all I want to do is watch a DVD and I have to restart the whole computer. What could be causing this?

I was hoping that might have been some help... before you do anything drastic, try the Front Row forums:

  • Front Row pauses during DVD play

I've played at least 5 (3 of which were brand new) different DVD's in Front Row that randomly pause during play. After a few seconds the movie continues to play. I took the computer into the store to have the optical drive replaced, but it keeps happening. I tried just using DVD player and the same thing happens. Since the drive has been replaced, now I get "skipping over damaged area" when it pauses (only in DVD player). These are BRAND NEW dvds, there's no way they can be damaged already. Any ideas, suggestions, anything???

That's interesting. Since it doesn't seem to be a hardware problem, you might use the Accounts System Preferences to create a brand new user. Log out and log in as the new user. Does the DVD Player application give you the same trouble when logged in as the new user? If not, then a preference or setting your original user has must be interfering. Or some kind of preference file corruption. If the new user does have the same trouble, it might be time to run the Disk Utility and make sure your permissions are repaired and the disk is repaired. If that still doesn't help, it may be time to do an "archive and install" of Mac OS X to get a good copy of the DVD Player application back...

  • Auto start Front row when insert DVD

    Bonjour,
May the subjet has been already discussed, but is anyone
know an applescipt that can auto start front row when a DVD is
    loaded?
    Thank you

I couldn't get this suggestion to work on two different Macs. I don't think the Front Row.app is handled the same way as other applications. For example, you can't launch Front Row by double clicking on it inside the CoreServices folder.

  • Front row Freezes while playing DVD

Front row stops responding to input from the remote and keyboard after watching a dvd for some period of time, usually happens after and hour or so. The dvd's are store bought and seem to be okay. The problem usually only occurs after watching a movie for more than an hour. If at some point I hit pause the movie will not respond and keep on playing, keyboard commands don't do anything. I can get it to stop playing only by hitting comaltesc and which causes the system to either freeze or give me only a arrow that I can move around but do nothing with. I am thinking that my MBP is DOA since it has been doing this since the day I received it, May 21, 2006. Any suggestions would help, intermittent issues are a pain in the butt... Thanks
PS everything is up to date.

Have you guys tried the play/pause + minus button to get out of Front Row? This usually gets you out of most problems in Front Row. Trust me when I say your Mac hates you to unplug or power down hard - only use as last resort.
For better results in Front Row quit out all "i" media apps before using Front Row. Then allow Front Row to open the various apps for you. I know this is slower. Front Row is really only a "front" for the other software. If you update iPhoto or iTunes and then go into Front Row it can easily hang due to the updates. I am now in the habit of just quiting out all "i" apps when I update them. Works like a charm.

  • Front Row Freezes and has Glitches with DVDs

I already posted this in another forum, but someone suggested I post it here.
When the thing actually DOES play dvds, the screen has glitches, like pink and green random images that resembles when an old Nintendo system is crashing. Please help if you can!! Thanks in advance.

I sure haven't. I must note, also, that it's not just with DVDs. Video files on the hard drive have the problem, as well.
Someone mentioned that the VGA dongle might be the culprit but that doesn't make sense. The computer with an external display works fine until Front Row is used. And, as I stated earlier, it doesn't seem to matter with my situation if I have an external display connected or not.
My personal opinion is that there's a conflict with some third-party codecs on the system. For example, I have installed the Perian components and ffmpeg. Since I have some free time this weekend, I'll be removing these and see if the problems persist.

  • Front row freeze up

For some odd reason, when I play movies (any kind mind you, DVD's, iTunes movies, homemade movies) Front row will freeze up during the movie for 4 seconds and then go back to normal. It happens with multiple files. Any idea whats going on?

I am having this too. Always worked nicely but now it's completely unusable. Quite a bummer. Did you update Frontrow a/o QuickTime via Software Update in the last week or so? I did this. There's help on this elsewhere on the Forum, may need to reinstall some codecs and wipe plist etc. When I fix mine I will post my findings.
    Regards,

  • Front row freezes up

Every time i try to open a itunes playlist or any music in front row it freezes the whole computer up.
    What is the problem?

Can you open iTunes directly without any trouble? There aren't any dialog boxes that pop-up are there?
Most of the time, you can use Apple-option-esc to force quit a misbehaving application like Front Row.

  • Front Row freezing in the movies menu

Hi, I got my new Macbook last week, last weekend I ran all the updates, including FR, and everything seemed to work fine. Last night trying was the first time I went into the "Shared" video folder in the FR menu, and after that while trying to exit FR froze up. It keeps doing the same thing, and it only happens in the Movies menu. Sometimes I'm able to exit after 20-30 seconds, sometimes I have to shut down the computer.
Is there any way to reset/reinstall FR just to get rid of the problem? Thanks!
I'm an ex-windows user, new to Mac, still trying to get used to it

i have the same problem on my new notebook (a mac book pro intel). I observed that it freezes everytime i'm not connected to the Web and i haven't turned off airport...
is it possible front row tries to download some information by internet, it doesn't recognize connection is not active and given that mac is not connected the research freeze the application ('till a timeout message is sent back..after looong time...)?
everytime the solution for me it was to wait long time (really long) or to turn off computer...

  • Front Row Freezes

Just before upgraded to 10.4.5, my iMac started to "freeze" whenever I clicked on the Movie Trailers button. Here's what happens.
    1. I open Front Row using the remote menu button.
    2. I navigate to the movies menu.
    3. I click select the Movie Trailers button.
    4. The loading graffic starts to spin.
    5. The graffic stops after 30 seconds or so.
    6. The computer no longer responds to the remote or the keyboard.
This happens everytime I try to watch the movie trailers, even after restarting.
Does any one else have this problem?

    Jim,
First try deleting this folder ~/Library/Caches/Front Row.
Also, have you updated the new Front Row,

  • Front Row - Not recognising DVDs

I have installed Front Row on my aluminium Powerbook, and much to my disapointment, it doesn't read DVDs. I understand Front Row isn't ment to be on Powerbooks but I was wondering if there is a way to fix it?
Any suggestions would be greatly apprectiated

    Hi Christopher,
Along with installing Front Row did you install the Front Row Update? That should resolve the communication issue.

  • Front Row and Ripped DVDs

    Hi
Does anyone know how I get ripped DVDs (using Mac the Ripper) to play via Front Row? When I go through the Video menu I can select the Video_TS menu but it says that there are no movies available in that directory.
    Thanks

... HandBrake to rip DVD's onto my MacBook
It does but it messes up the video. That is, no matter what quality setting you set (I tried it all), you end up with something that looks more like some old, worn out VHS tape than the source DVD. It also looks like iTunes can't handle more than 2 audio channels for playback. It makes me wonder about the new Apple TV. Would it also be limited to lousy video and 2-channel audio?

  • Front Row crashes loading DVD

There are other topics similar to this one, but not exactly, so here goes...
More often than not, I can't play a DVD in Front Row. The disk goes in (or I hit "Menu" on the remote) and Front Row loads up. I select the DVD option, it indicates its loading the DVD, then it crashes to the desktop with no error messages.
This happens with both Mac-made DVDs and regular movie DVDs. They all play fine with just the DVD player app.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

I've actually been having the same problem.
First of all, my DVD player constantly takes forever to load a DVD and/or spits it out; then more recently, Front Row without fail will crash when a DVD ends. Even worse, lately, it won't even play the DVD after repeated attempts to start it.
It's extremely annoying and I can't figure out what to do.

  • Front Row crashes during purchased song

    Hello,
I installed leopard on Friday, and until this point have had very minor problems. Today, I went into Front Row to play a song that I purchased from iTunes, and about half-way though, the screen went black, but the audio continued (I turned the screensaver off). I was able to back completely out of Front Row, and got back in, but when I resumed the song, it got a little farther and then completely froze (no audio or picture) where I had to re-boot. One of these two happens every time I play this song.
I did an erase & install, and this was the only song that this happened on... also, this was the only song that I have bought since I moved over to leopard. Any help on how to fix this or what may be going on is appreciated!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Just to be clear, you can browse your entire iTunes library with Front Row, but only one song will play? Or does only one song appear in Front Row? Have you used iTunes before running Front Row? Have you authorized your new computer to play purchased songs?

  • Front Row Freezing...

    Hi,
I on a long drive, and don't have an mp3 player, so I hooked up my Macbook Pro to my car. I used front row on with the remote. It worked great, but after a few hours it started to skip, and then froze. The music kept playing, but the screen froze, and I couldn't change songs or volume. It would not advance to the next song after it was done playing the song when it froze either. This happened about 4 times. I couldn't force quit out of front row either, so I had to force a shut down of my computer. I was wondering if maybe when the hard drive started to spool down because of the power saving options, the music stopped? and front row doesn't wake it?

I can't say for certain what the problem was, but I would HIGHLY recommend you don't run your MacBook Pro in the car for extended time. Even if the hard drive has some kind of sudden motion sensor, the risk that you'll hit a bump that might make the hard drive read heads hit the disk platter is just too high. Hard-drive based iPods have specific buffers so that the read heads are not always being used, so it's safe to use them when in motion. (Also, flash-based iPods are fine since they don't actually have any moving parts.) But, a computer, even one with motion sensors on the hard drive simply are not designed to work that way. I would suggest you invest in an iPod!

  • Scrolling through videos freezes Front Row

I have many home videos in iTunes and thus Front Row. When scrolling up and down the list of videos in Front Row, I see the thumbnail sized videos begin to run. Eventually Front Row freezes when scrolling up/down through the list. Remote doesn't respond, keyboard and mouse do not respond and ultimately I have to either remotely logon and kill FrontRow.app or reboot. I know that all of these videos are playable without error using the QT player and in iTunes so the files are OK and furthermore are playable in the thumbnails again the next time in FrontRow.
Anyone see this problem and know how to fix or work around? Thanks in advance.
BTW, these videos are full sized H.264 videos converted from DVDs I had previously made with a miniDV camcorder. I've played iPod sized versions of these videos in Front Row with no problem except that now I am using an HDTV and the iPod sized versions are no longer good enough.

I agree, but the problem only occured while scrolling. I was able to play each of the videos beginning to end. The problem was reproducable over a short time but not with any particular set of videos. In any case, the problem did go away as I am able to scroll up/down through all the videos with no problem. There's also been a few firmware updates, OS updates, and quicktime updates. Any of these could have fixed the problem. I'm happy to have my 'media center' Mac back in action.
