Front Row Genre or some kind of Catagories

i have an extensive movie collection in itunes and want to set it up so i can choose a genre to see specific movies similar to what the music section has but cannot find a way to do it. so is there any way to set-up genre in the movie sections if i can't i hope to god they update the software.

I've never used it, but some others here have recommended VideoDrive to add preview and metadata to your own video files and add them to iTunes.
If you're only looking to make a preview, QuickTime Pro gives you the option to manually set the "Poster" frame of the movie.

  • Why do I get a black screen in front row when watching some iTunes store purchases? esp Cars 2

We bought Cars 2 a few months ago from the iTunes store. The movie won't work in Front Row, we only get a black screen (except for the blue Front Row controls at the bottom) although the audio comes through just fine. The annoying part is all of our other iTunes store movies work fine in Front Row. Just Cars 2 is broken. I don't think that it is an authorisation problem because it plays okay in iTunes, Quicktime, even via airplay to an appleTV or via Home Sharing to our iPad.
The movie is only standard definition so I am guessing that it is not an HDCP issue; I understand that there is only HDCP on HD movies. We are playing it on a Mac Mini (core 2 duo) on a Sony Bravia via a VGA connector.
After a little bit of complaining, apple let us download the movie again in case the file was corrupted, but unfortunately the same problem with the new version.
The computer did have Perian installed at one point, but uninstalling and restarting made no difference.
I have found lots of reports of movies with missing picture in Front Row but these are all ripped videos, never with an iTunes Store purchase.
Apple won't refund our money as the purchase was more than 60 days ago by the time I gave up troubleshooting and reported the problem.

Yeah! Problem solved: It's a QT issue.
Cause: Mac Update Software downloaded a faulty QT.
Solution: Download QT from Apple's QT site.
Great to have the Video back

  • How do I get Front Row to work with Lion?

    Hello fellow Mac users,
How do I get Front Row to work with Lion? I have an iMac 27 inch computer and is the sole entertainment provider for my bedroom. I refuse to put a TV in my room and wanted to know how to get Front Row to work again on my mac? It seems that the upgrade to Lion erased the app.
I have quite a few movies and series that I bought off iTunes and is a shame that I can't use a media center app like Front Row on Lion.

I kind of have the opposite problem. I need to know how to turn off my remote on the computer. I am using the remote for my Apple TV and it keeps making the volume on my Computer go up and down (with annoying sounds).
There used to be a way to un-sync the remote with the comp but I cannot remember how and the Apple help is not much help! I have Lion.
    Thanks!
    Best,
    Tony

  • DVD player vs Front Row

I've always played DVDs on my Mac Mini through Front Row but have recently been having some audio dropout issues. I was searching around here and just read that Front Row plays DVDs through QuickTime, whereas the Mac DVD Player is different.
Is there a preference from the forum between using Front Row or the DVD Player? Could using Front Row be causing some of these audio issues I'm having?
(I posted something similar on the Mac Mini discussion thread, but thought this would be a better place, so please excuse the double post)

Oh yeah, and I can still view the DVD in Front Row with no problems.

  • Viewing Aperture library in Front Row

    Hello all
Front Row now supports the Aperture library. I noticed that the images are not as sharp as you can see them directly in Aperture when you edit them. So I guess that Front Row just displays some post-rendered JPG image. How can I set the quality of this image?
I want to use Front Row to display projects of my library to customers, so the images should be as rendered as sharp as possible.

front row, and any other application that supports displaying aperture photos is displaying the presets you created in aperture. to raise the quality, just go into preferences and set the size and jpeg quality of the previews. your library will grow if you set this higher than it is right now. you also might have to delete previews and recreate them for existing photos.

  • Auto Sleep stopped by front row.

    Hey,
Ive recently turned my iMac G5 into an alarm clock, using the sheduler to turn off at a specific time, and turn on at another time to then play music at a full volume.
However my problem lies in it turning itself off. Genraly I use Front Row to play some music as i fall asleep. However when the sheduler goes to turn itself off. I find that itunes (the app which runs behind front row) has prevented shut down.
Is there anyway of stopping Front row (and itunes) from doing this?
    Thanks
    James

I tried to do this when I first got my iBook G4, and I found it very complicated and fiddly to do. Since then, I have used many alarm and sleep applications, but most of them have had their problems and flaws. All that I can do now is recommend that you try my favourite application Aurora. It is a freeware application that has options for both setting an alarm, plus turning your mac off after you've fallen asleep. It is a very easy to use application, and is highly recommended by me to any of my friends. Although there are little flaws in the application, you may contact the author, and he will sort them out straight away. I did submit a bug of my own, and too my surprise, he emailed me back the same day, explaining how he will fix the problem and even gave me a preview version of the next update, just to check and see whether the bug was still there.
As well as all this, you will no longer have to worry about the system scheduler, as Aurora automatically sets itself to turn on/wake your mac a couple of minutes before an alarm is set to go off.

  • ITunes Crashes When Launched by Front Row

    Hey everyone,
If iTunes isn't running when I launch Front Row, I have some issues when I try to play its music through the Front Row interface. I can select "Music" just fine from the four-icon menu, but as soon as I try "Playlists" or "Artists" or anything, I just get the pinwheel to eternity. If I use the Force Quit keyboard shortcut, i'm immediately spat back to my desktop, where I'm informed that iTunes has unexpectedly quit. If I choose Reopen, though, it will keep quitting until I choose Cancel. Only when I open iTunes myself does the crash loop stop.
Help me! It's really, really annoying to have to make sure that iTunes is running every time I want to use Front Row. And it also sort of defeats the purpose of Front Row in the first place.
    Thanks,
    Jake

Just so you guys know - I just fixed the issue by clearing out the Scripts and Plugins folders in Macintosh HD/Users/myname/Library/iTunes.
I guess I'll add them back in one by one to see which caused the issue. I can't remember which scripts I had - I know there was iTunes-BPM and Art to iChat. Anyone have those? For visualizers I had Gaslight and iConcertCal.
If you had one of these, let's figure it out so we can let the developer know about this bug.

  • Front Row won't play .mp4 files

I just recently started using Front Row and, for some reason, it won't play .mp4 files. The said files are in my Movie folder and show up in Front Row's "Movies" menu, but when I try to play them it says "Selected video could not be played, format was not recognized."
    Please help!!

iTunes only supports MP4s encoded using the Main Profile, but many MP4s that you can download from the web are encoded using High Profile. These need to be converted.
You can use an app like VideoSpec or MediaInfo to list the encoding characteristics of your MP4s.

  • Front Row lists Podcasts in Movies?

For some reason my Front Row is listing some of my podcasts (early Diggnation and AOTS) in the movies directory. I only have like 5 .mov files (random clips from the net) in that folder and it's anoying that there is all those extra podcasts in that section?
    Any help?

Are these podcasts that you signed up for via iTunes?
    Are they all old podcasts?
Front Row looks for certain meta-data tagged with videos from iTunes. It sounds like these may have been mis-tagged (or early versions) and aren't being recognized by Front Row as podcasts. Unfortunately at the moment none of that meta-data is user changeable so you won't be able to fix where these show up.
Can you re-download them? Maybe re-aquireing these podcasts will properly tag them

  • Change default Remote settings to open a different app than Front Row?

    Hello!
Forgive me if this is not the right board for this post, but I'm not sure where it should go exactly - this seemed best.
I have a fairly new MacBook Pro running Leopard, a rather large video library on an external drive, and a 24" display attached. I've been using Front Row to view these files, but have run into several file types that play back perfectly fine in Quicktime, but not Front Row (such as MKVs...), even with Perian. I discovered a solution however - Plex - which is what amounts to a much more feature rich, third-party version of Front Row. After some use, I've discovered that for my setup, it's a much better way to view things. It's still a beta, but it works fine on my system.
What I'd love to do, however, is to reconfigure the included Apple Remote so that when I press the menu button, it opens Plex instead of Front Row. Is this possible? Apple certainly doesn't seem to have included an easy way of this.
    Thanks,
    -Dan

This little piece of software will do what you want:

I use it just to enable my older mini to use an Apple Remote and it works well.

  • Front Row says im not connected to the internet, But I am!

I go on Front row to watch some movie trailers and it says im not connected to the internet, but im posting this.
I have repaired permissions and reinstalled it and leopard.
    What can I do?

It looks indeed like there is a bug in the Leopard version of Front Row. I have the exact same problem, after having just installed Leopard in a new clean install. The trailer browsing feature worked just fine with Tiger, in this very same Intel mini, but now with Leopard and with the exact same network settings, it keeps nagging about a missing internet connection. I am using a pppoe / DSL line, and needless to say, my internet connection is working just fine.
But now, thanks to the hint above, I was able to get the movie trailers to work now. The trick, or should I say the workaround was to stop using the automatic setting configured by Leopard during installation, and setting up a new location, with the very same details. You don't have to delete anything, just add a new location and name it to your liking, then add your connection details, and you're all set.
So in short, apparently one should use a manually set location rather than the automatic mode. An annoying little bug really, but fortunately easy to fix.
Hopefully the boffins @Apple are reading these forums, and this little bug is to be fixed in 10.5.2 as well. That is, along with the Mail SMTP bug, which was also annoying but easy to fix, eventually.

  • Some TV Shows appearing under Movies within Front Row

I've started experiencing this particular behaviour since installing the recent updates (10.6.1 & iTunes 9). Within iTunes, I've checked the 'media kind' and it is set correctly.
All the content was purchased from iTunes. I'd be grateful for any advice.
    Thanks,
    Andy.

The problem happened again to me - I was fiddling with my music videos (some 664) and did a mass tidy up - selected all and then checked the box to make sure they weren't skipped or resumed half way through. Also ticked the box that they were music video.
Back in Front Row suddenly all my movies were swamped with hundreds of music videos. And they were clearly marked as "music video" when displayed in Front Row Movies.
I did the following: selected all the music videos, changed the type to TV shows, exited iTunes. Checked in FR - all gone from Movies. Back into iTunes and then changed them all back to Music Video. Exited iTunes. Checked FR - still gone!
So maybe try changing them to something else (music video or movie in your case?) and then back again - make sure you exit iTunes after though (maybe it commits changes to the iTunes database or something ... ?).

  • Front Row Sharing - Some TV shows not showing up

    Hi all,
I have a problem with iTunes' shared libary - it only shows a subset of TV shows within iTunes. I have a Mac Pro in my den, which hosts a pretty large itunes library (about 750GB), of which 350GB are TV shows I've either bought from iTunes or ripped from DVD. The machine is running 10.6 and iTunes is fully up to date. Everything works as you'd expect on the Mac Pro, and Front row can see all the videos iTunes can see.
In our bedroom we have a fairly recent Mac Mini. If i use iTunes ->iTunes sharing, all the titles show up correctly and I an watch any TV show.
However, if we use the sharing feature in front row on the mac mini, only a subset of TV shows appears - and infuriatingly it's not even 100% reliable which items will fail to show - but it is about 90% reliable, which is even more frustrating, as it's clearly not totally random. The shows most likely to be effected seem to be the ones added in the last few months.
I've also tried running front row on different clients on the same LAN - both my wife and my Macbook pros do the same, as does an iMac in our kitchen, so it seems to me to be either a problem which effects Front Row generally, or a fault on the iTunes server Mac Pro. Is my library simply too big for the Front Row sharing feature to work correctly? If so - this is ridiculous!?
I've looked into alternative clients for the Mac Mini, like Mediacentral, which doesn't seem to support sharing of iTunes videos, and also Plex which again doesn't appear to support this, but is frankly so complex it's hard to tell - if it will support seamless iTunes sharing of all content, I'd be happy to give it a go - but it doesn't look like it does.
Preferably there would just be a fix like deleteing some iTunes cache files or something on the Mac Pro - I've had a sniff about the iTunes XML file, and compared the data of some of theTV shows which turn up to some of those that don't and they all look identical, schema wise, so I'm none the wiser.
All machines tested are totally up to date, OS/iTUnes wise..
I haven't managed to find anything on the internet about this, which leads me to think it's probably an obscure issue with my iTUnes installation, rather than a problem with library size, since I'm sure many other people have bigger libraries than this....
    Any help greatly appreciated!

I have the same issue. My home shared library can all be seen on my iPhone or my Apple TV 3rd Gen but not on my ipad. Only some movies and tv shows show up. Also. Many of the TV shows are all mixed up. Episodes shows up in different series and all mix up. All those issues only on the iPad, on other devices, all seems fine.

  • Front Row on Snow Leopard has audio out of sync on movies and TV shows and some movies wont show images.

I have an iMac Core Duo 2GHz (yes, first Intel iMac). I have Snow Leopard v10.6.8 (latest/last MacOS version I could load) with the most recent Security Update (2013-003).
I have two issues with Front Row:
    • Some of the movie files will not show the images, but I can hear the audio.
    • On other movies and TV shows they start fine, but within a few minutes the audio is out of sync with the images, running about 3-5 seconds ahead... Looks like a bad dub of a Japanese movie from the 60s.
Now, I know it's related to Front Row, because when I jump over to iTunes and start the same movie or TV show it begins where I left off in Front Row, but images are fine and audio is suddenly in-sync.
However, with Snow Leopard being 2 major upgrades back - 3 if you count the upcoming Mavericks release - I doubt this registers as a "brouhaha" on Apple's radar screens. Then, again, maybe the spirit of Steve won't tolerate this Microsoft-like quirk, even if my iMac is still chugging along after 7 years and multiple MacOS X upgrades & updates...

I think I found my answer... or culprit. It has to do with Snow Leopard, and my iMac Core Duo, being the last of the dying breed of 32-bit systems, and that iTunes v11.x is 64-bit (heavily, at least)...
Guess I need to break down and replace my 7 year old iMac, even though it still works beautifully (otherwise).

  • Front Row on mac mini: We need some fixes

Been having fun playing with my mac mini and trying it out as a home media center, to network and play all my shared media that's on my iMac G5 and enjoy it on my 32" LCD TV and stereo system.
There are three major glitches that keep this from working perfectly, and hopefully Apple will have a fix for these soon:
    1. When you want to view your shared pics as a slideshow, Front Row is not able to remember and use the music settings that you have assigned to your albums in iPhoto. It can only use music for the slideshows that originates on the mini. There is no choosing from the Shared Music in the slideshow preferences, and therefore no option to, like on an iPod, to have your slideshow music setting set to "From iPhoto".
    2. Front Row keeps insisiting and changing even saved settings for slideshow playaback, always reverting back to using Jesu Joy...from the Sample Music folder, and displaying images with the Ken Burns effect. I have tried changing these setting on both computers's iPhoto settings, and yet Front Row resets them, if not immediately, upon the next opening.
    3. I cannot get any movie that I did not purchase off of iTunes to play through the networked connection. It seems that it cannot stream anything much longer or bigger than an iPod sized music video or movie trailer. I couldn't even get the TV show episodes I have in iTunes to work. Trying to play a full length movie resulted in FrontRow hanging forever and me having to Force Quit or restart. Many of the full length movies I had ripped from DVDs to mp4s I did at a larger size than the 320 iPod screen size, so that when I played them back on a large display they would look better. These movies are formatted right and do play in iTunes as well as on my iPod, and from my iPod to TV with the AV cables, but not through the wireless networked mac mini.
If we can get these things straightened out, it is a pretty great home media device.

    Jim,
Isn't Front Row awesome and full of promise! I just needed a new mini and got this to play with in the mix. Looks like I need two mini since this one is going under the TV.
Now to your glitches. Remember front row is simply an agent that listens for remote commands and sends them to other applications to do the heavy lifting/dirty work.
    1. I think this is really a problem with the version of iPhoto that has the photos. I'm not a guru of iPhoto, but I know of no way to change the defaults for a new slideshow. All the shows I create (either in iPhoto or via front row requesting a slide show on the fly) initially default to Automatic Ken Burns and the Jesu.... soundtrack ( a great piece of music no doubt, but woefully overplayed at the moment for my tastes.) I have no problems once I go into iPhoto and set the slide show prefernces the way I like and quit/re-start iPhoto. I don't know if there is another way to save the settings for a slide show, but quitting seems to do the trick for me.
    2. I'm not catching anything new here. Are you sure your settings were saved - (i.e. could you start iPhoto on "source" computer and play the slide show immediately and get the music and settings you changed?) Sorry to question you but I just can't think anything else here. Front row is simply asking iTunes (either locally or remotely) to play the show or create one if it does not exist. Perhaps the way it is asking is different for you - I have a weird mix of software levels (iPhoto 5 on my remote mac and iPhoto 6 on my mini) - but I cannot reproduce the symptom you mentioned to try to see what happened.
    3. This could be a network issue (or a too much stuff to fit in the sock.) What is the data rate for one of the movies that causes you issues? Is that rate more than your network will allow? Front Row doesn't seem to be that graceful at the moment when network pauses or fails. It will wait a long time to time out the operation and I get to watch that circular throbber a lot. Open up the Activity Monitor (it's in Applications / Utilities folder). Play the movie locally from a hard disk. Look at the Disk Activity tab at the bottom. It will give you an idea of how much data needs to be read from disk to play the movie. Then change to the network tab. Go to the other computer and play the movie. Return to the first computer and see how much data manages to get sent. (It's best to quit all other applications when measuring - this tool shows all activity on the mac - not just the movie...) I have a lot of movies that have way too much data to send wirelessly. I'm going to upgrade my home switch to gigabit and wire things to that to serve my needs.
Good luck - let me know if I misunderstood anything - but I'm guessing front row already does what you want and there are some workarounds or other issues of learning how to set things up to give you that pretty great home media device you want.
