Front Row Menu effects

Hi all,
I enjoy using keynote 3 to produce presentations etc for clients, however does anyone know if it is possible to reproduce the menu's in front row, specifically the movies one where the film is playing to the left and the menu is on the right hand side?
Or is this an in-house apple only feature?
I am aware of the imovie templates which come close, but arent very user friendly in the sense u can only edit content rather than the template.
many thanks tommy

I'd say you're going to have to use something like After Effects to create this effect. You can get CLOSE to it with the reflection transition in Keynote (between slides) but it's clearly not the same as a rotating window of perspective movies.

  • Mac Mini Frozen on Front Row Menu

This morning, my Mac Mini got stuck on the Front Row Menu. None of the icons are accessible with the remote (DVD, itunes, etc) and no keys on the keyboard seem to work. I restarted several times but nothing seems to work. The only thing that seems to work is you can put a disc in or take one out. Does anyone know anything about this?

Hi Hodgeko, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

The combo update for Intel-based Macs...

Repair Permissions after re-install, then reboot again.
If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

  • Switching to different Audio-Language-Tracks in Front Row

I have made a video documentary that has three audio tracks, which are *German, French and English.* The video container is m4v.
*I set German as the default track*. So far so good. It works on iTunes, on my iPod and on Quicktime. On each of these devices and players the German Audio Track is played by default. I can optionally choose between English and French. That's actually fantastic.
But there are some strange issues with Front Row. Front Row on my MacBook plays the video as expected with the German audio track. That's great, but Front Row on my iMac plays the English audio track by default. It's exactly the same Snow Leopard Installation on both systems, so why does Front Row on my iMac plays the *English Audio Track by default?*
The Front Row Menu is German on both systems.
One thing I noticed is that I had to change the *default Audio Track languange on my iTunes* to German, that wasn't the case on my MacBook, but anyway it had no effect.
Can anyone help me out with this issue?

we have several of our kids movies ripped with both original audio (mostly english) and danish.
until one of the latest updates to snow leopard and itunes (not sure whether it was THE last ones) the audiotrack played in front row, was the one chosen for the movie in itunes.
after ripping the movie, the default language would be english, but that could be changed by starting a movie in itunes and then choose 'danish' in the language 'bubble' in the on-screen menu. then i would quit the movie and itunes and start it in front row - now with the language chosen in itunes as default...
that is sadly not the case anymore and our kids can now only watch their movies with danish audio in itunes and not in front row, where all movies suddenly have english audio with no possiblity of change
is deleting the english audio track the only way to get the danish audio back into front row?

  • Front Row on an External Display

**Note that this is for Leopard's Front Row and only may not apply to Tiger's**
Here's an explanation of the bugs/irksomes now facing Front Row
    1. The screensaver option can be buggy so go to preferences within Front Row to disable it.
    2. Whatever screen you use front row on, the other will be black.
    3. Front Row does not play video in mirroring mode, period.
    4. Front Row, when opened, will display on whatever monitor is set as your primary display at that time.
    5. Even after exiting it, if you check it the activity monitor it will still run in the background for 30 minutes (not sure on that time frame).
    6. If you open it up again before it is shutdown, it will try to display on whatever was set as the primary display when it was first launched.
Okay, now that you understand that, here is somethings to keep in mind
-When you initially open it, the settings get stuck, so if you opened it with the wrong display set as your primary monitor, just quit it in the activity monitor, switch the main monitor in your display system preferences, and then reopen it.
-You can trick it to display on your secondary display by enabling mirror-mode, opening front row, exiting front row (not quiting), disabling mirror mode, and lastly reopening front row. Effectively, it gets stuck to display on the external display and does so once you turn mirroring off. This isn't even remotely elegant but is my preferred method.
-If you have your external display connected while your computer is asleep, pressing a button on your remote will automatically wake it and use the external display as your primary/only monitor. This means that Front Row will display on your TV very easily if you put your computer to sleep then wake it with the remote BUT you must always be mindful that if you had opened it recently, you may have to quit it first.
The only last suggestion I have is that if you want quick and easy access to quitting front row, you can create an applescript to quit it with this
tell application "Front Row" to quit
If anyone knows how to change primary displays using applescripts please post as ideally a script could be created that would just make sure Front Row was quit, switch displays, then would open it streamlining the entire process.
Well really ideally apple would make Front Row a little more dynamic with the option to display on the external display and smart enough to know which one that is but this problem existed in the last version too and they never fixed it then so....

Well, just putting the display in sleep mode won't work as, for some reason I don't understand, sleeping the display turns off the external monitor.
Thinking a little more clearly now, the method of sleeping the computer only works for the portable Macs as the lid must be down while it wakes up for it to work.

  • Automatically start Front Row

I've ditched the AppleTV in favour of a second Mac Mini. Much better. I'm streaming HDTV bitstreams and DVD (MPEG) bitsreams from a USB drive attached to Airport Extreme. (Simple alias creation in the MOVIE folder and additional components installed for Quicktime). No loss of quality through converting to h.264. No waiting around 24 hours to encode. Front Row interface is MUCH better than AppleTV interface.
Two questions which I can't find the answer to: First, is there a way to automatically start front row? I would like the Mac Mini to automatically turn on (easy) and then automatically start the Front Row interface.
Second, is there a way to modify the Front Row menu structure?
All I would like is simply Videos: Movies. I would like ro remove (or hide) Sharing... Trailers... etc.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Many thanks.

You can write an AppleScript, that you add to your user's login items, that will open Front Row each time you login. You can find the instructions here to write the script:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2148108
I don't think there's anyway to change the built-in menu structure, though. It's hard-coded into Front Row. You can add folders and sub-folders to your user's Movies folder. Front Row will follow them down into all your video files.

  • Does your front row show the Applications playlist?

My Front Row has some bugs, I think.
Inside Music->Playlists, the following are listed but do not show their contents:
    Applications
    Library
    TV Shows
But Applications shouldn't be there and TV shows already shows up in the main front row menu.
As for Library, this is my entire iTunes library. does anyone have this issue:?

If your movies play with the QuickTime Player program outside of iPhoto, then Front Row will be able to show them. The "Movies" section of Front Row only looks inside your "Movies" folder in your home folder for files. If you make an alias from the iPhoto library of your movie file into the "Movies" folder, then Front Row should be able to see them and play them. Remember, if you drag an item (or some items) while holding down on the Apple and "option" keys (it may be "alt" on a non-North American keyboard), you will create an alias where you drop the items instead of moving them. That might help you move several of them or even the folder they're in to your "Movies" folder.

  • Front row music stalls

Hi, I'm very new to Macs, just got my first, and a strange thing happens in Front Row. When viewing a slideshow, the music plays for about 4 secs and then stalls, the show continues, but pausing and restarting resumes the music... for about 4 seconds.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I just came on the forum and looked for this exact thing!
My Front Row was doing what yours is, try this:
Go back into Front Row and go to your music pick a song and play it for a min or two. Go back to the main Front Row menu and pick your photos that you want to view. It should now play the music with the photos/slide show.
    Good luck.

  • Front row acting up??

when im at front row and i play a movie/trailes clip..the whole screen blinks black then appers again it plays the movie/clip for like 3 seconds then blacks out then appers againg?? how do i fix that??
    thanks

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
I'm hoping I'm close on this... open System References/Front Row/Sound Preference Panel. There is a new option under the “Sound Effects” tab to enable or disable playing Front Row sound effects.
Hopefully you can at least Mute the sound ...

  • Front Row screen shows up randomly

On a pretty regular basis, the Front Row menu takes over my screen. I'm not doing anything that seems to make this happen; the mouse isn't going to some corner and activating it and I'm not pressing some key combo.
    It's really annoying. Anyone?

Command-Esc will activate it... there is slight delay, may be it's why you think you're not doing anything.... or could it be another user in the room with a remote that you're mac is picking up?

  • Front Row & keyboard illumination

I'm not sure if I asked about this before, but I can't find it anywhere in the forum, so, here's the thing (possibly, again). I have the keyboard illumination set to turn itself off after 30 seconds sitting still. It works perfectly fine anywhere within OSX expect Front Row. It turns itself off when I'm in the Front Row menu, but not during movie playback in Front Row. Could anyone try this, I'd like to know if it's just my computer or if it's actually a normal behavior...

  • Front Row Scrolling Error

When scrolling the Front Row menu screens with my Apple Remote, the
every other line is skipped. I've had this problem for several years
with my iMac (iSight) 20 " and have been unable to get any leads
regarding the solution of the problem.
    Any insights greatly appreciated,

It went down or up two at a time with no pause while it behaved normally when using the keyboard. After pruning my hard drive of little used applications and files prior to migrating to my new iMac 27" i7, this aberrant behavior stopped and the problem on the iMac G5 is now resolved. Unfortunately, I don't know what the conflicting app was. Thanks for your response Watanabe-san.

  • Apple control - Front Row takes a long time to open through the Menu Butto?

I am using a ManMini as a HTPC. Front Row is being used as my Media Choice. When I click the Menu Button Front Row may not open or it may take a very longtime to activate.
    lister

If you use the Accounts System Preferences to create a brand new user, log out and log in as the new user, how long does it take the new user to open Front Row with the remote? If it's just as slow, you have a system-wide issue. If Front Row opens quickly for the new user, then your original user may have a movie, song or picture that's taking a long time for your Front Row to access. Let us know what you find out from this troubleshooting step.

  • Front Row TV Show menu gets confused and jumps back

I recently upgraded my Intel Mac mini to Mac OS X 10.5.5 (Leopard). Front row seems to get confused as I browse through my TV Shows menu. For instance, if I scroll down to "Heroes" (season 2) the select bar seems to jump to "Grey's Anatomy" on it's own. After it does this it also confuses the artwork for the shows.
I've only found one instance of this issue doing a Google search, but nothing here in Apple discussion forums. Has anyone dealt with this successfully.?

  • Front Row won't launch iPhoto, no black menu

I just got my new Intel iMac. All works great but not the Front Row's photo show. When I press Photos on the rotating desktop, the menu just fades and shows Desktop. No error message, just desktop.
I deleted iPhoto, re-installed it (v. 6.0). Does not work. I updated it and Front Row to the latest versions, not working. I repaired permissions. Does not help.
If I manually open iPhoto, I can then launch the slideshow by using remote. And iPhoto works fine by itself. Problem seems to be that Front Row cannot launch the black FR menu and/or iPhoto.
I'd like to be able to launch the slideshow by only using remote as it is meant to be...
    Any help appreciated!

I solved it finally myself: I deleted my old photo files and photo albums from iPhoto. Now FR works nicely. Seems that the migrated photo libraries from iPhoto 4 did not fare well with iPhoto 6+Front Row.
Weirdly, this rather straightforward solution is not suggested anywhere...
