Front row not on my computer.

I bought my iMac of eBay and Front Row wasn't on it. Is there any way I can install it without the restore disks (I don't have them either!).
Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Front Row in Mac OS X 10.4.x is not visible as an application to the user. It's buried in the System folder in this path:
/System/Library/Core Services/Front Row.app
If you have a 17" iMac with a built-in iSight (which should be clear because of the camera in the middle of the top of the iMac) and it's not in there, then, in fact, it is not installed. But if it's there and you just can't open it for some reason, then you have a different problem. Let us know if you can see it in the System folder. If you don't have a built-in iSight, then Front Row is not available for your model iMac without purchasing Mac OS X 10.5.
If it's not there and you have an iMac with the built-in iSight, I would recommend calling AppleCare Support. They can send you a set of install disks for your model computer for a fee. In the past, it's been anywhere from $20 to $60. These install disks will include the bundled software, like iLife, that is NOT included with a retail copy of Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard).

  • Why does front row not have simple organization?

I currently have a hard drive hooked into my macmini which is hooked up to my TV. On my hard drive I have over 1000 movies, all purchased through iTunes. However when I use front row and i goto the movie section, I have to scroll through every movie to get to the one I want. There's no way to scroll by letter, only one by one. This is horrible and takes forever. Can apple do an update that makes the right button on the apple remote for scrolling letter by letter. For example, you click the right button to goto movies starting with B, C, D, E, F, etc. Then the down button for one by one scrolling. Also, why does front row not have genres? AppleTV does. Why not incorporate that into front row? Think, Apple, Think.

You can have sub-folders in the Movies folder and arrange your movies alphabetically that way.
But if you want to alert Apple to your idea, then use this link:

  • Front Row not coming up

So last night I propped my 17" MBP up and went to watch a movie with it, while my children were in the living room watching something on our TV/DVD setup, and so I clicked on the remote to bring up Front Row, and nothing happened. I can increase and decrease the volume control with the remote, but Front Row never came with the other buttons on the remote.
So I thought, maybe I deleted Front Row off the computer -- Well, how would I have done that? I did a search for Front Row on the computer, and there were no results. How do I know if Front Row is on the computer? How do I get it back? I
I'm looking forward to any suggestions you can give!

I'd get EasyFind, Spotlight won't be reliable...

I think it's hidden in /System/Library/CoreServices in Tigernot certain.
If it really isn't there, then you'll need to reinstall or extract it from the Install Disc(s).
    Or try Media Central...

  • Front Row not working on new MacBook Pro

    Hello all,
I cannot get Front Row to work on my new MacBook Pro. I've confirmed that my Apple Remote works using iChat's video preview to see the flashing IR transmitter. I've pressed Cmnd+esc also. I've even tried to double-click on the System >> Library >> CoreServices >> Front Row app to no avail. If someone could help me, I would appreciate it. Many thanks in advance.
2.2 GHz Core2 Duo MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   4 GB RAM

Front Row doesn't usually open if you double-click the application in the CoreServices folder, so that's not unusual. The one troubleshooting step I might try, before calling AppleCare Support since your computer is new, would be to use the Accounts System Preferences to create a new user. Log out and log in as the new user. Can the new user open Front Row with command-esc or the remote? If so, then your original user has a preference file problem. If not, then you may need to re-install Front Row and/or Mac OS X. If your Mac is less than 90 days old, I'd call AppleCare Support and get some help from them to do that (also so they're made aware that a new computer required that in case there's an issue at the factory).

  • Front Row not seeing ex-hard drive on network

I have an ex-hard drive connected to my iMac with an alias of it inside my movies folder. Front Row on this computer sees this alias and its content no problems.
This is my problem. I have another iMac on the network connect to my computer via Front Row. This computer can see the content of my movies folder but not the alias to the ex-hard drive.
Does anybody have an solutions to this ?

Hi BillDoor, i hink you have to make an alias on your second imac
or make an alias from the first imac movie folder and put that in the moviefolder from the second imac

  • Front Row disappeared from my computer

Ok, here's the deal. I was having some problems with my optical drive so I took my iMac G5(iSight) to a Mac store. They had to reinstall Tiger, which they did, but now Front Row is no longer on my computer, even though it came with Front Row already installed on it. I stopped back and they said I could use the reinstallation disks to get it back on there, so I put in the disk, clicked on "Reinstall Bundled Software" and it went through the entire software installation process....still no Front Row. Anyone have any clue what's going on here? I gave it to a Mac Store and when I got it back, Front Row was missing. I'm just trying to get figure out how I can get it back.
    Thanks in adavance

The guy at the Mac store said that Front Row isn't a part of Tiger so he said they're not responsible...
Who was this guy? Where did you take your iMac in for service? Users of Intel-based Macs can re-install Front Row from the "bundled software" installer on the Mac OS X install disk. However, Front Row is NOT included in the "bundled software" installer for G5 iSight iMacs. Front Row is included in the Mac OS X installer for those Macs. Your technician is misinformed and used the incorrect disk to install Mac OS X. I would take your iMac back and have then use the correct disk to re-install Mac OS X. They are responsible for your copy of Front Row as it IS included with Mac OS X for your model.

  • FRONT ROW NOT INCLUDED IN LION????? (Rephrased as question since they erased my post!)

So I won't get my post, that many people we're discussing and figuring out a work around for Front Row, deleted by admin's I'll rephrase as a question.
WHY DID APPLE DELETE FRONT ROW? WILL THE REPLACE IT WITH ANOTHER APP? AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT THINKS APPLE TV IS POINTLESS IF YOU HAVE A MACBOOK WITH HDMI OUTPUT?
I hope instead of the admin's deleting this post (which to me shows they don't like the fact that we're downing Apple TV) they will give us an answer or some better work around. Otherwise the remote is pointless because if you can't see iTunes small text from across the room there's no way to control your Mac from across the room. Please discuss & don't delete.

No, like I said, Apple TV doesn't have a hard drive, so you can't download anything to it. You can only stream content in real time from other sources, either your Macbook, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or the internet. There is content available from Apple (and Netflix and MLB) that you can stream from the internet directly to your Apple TV, but it isn't always the same as the downloadable content. For example, you might be able to download a copy of the latest "Parks & Recreation" to your Macbook hard drive and then watch it by streaming it from your Macbook to your Apple TV. But that same episode might not show up in the Apple TV menu as a program available for direct streaming.
I think it's fair to say that Apple TV is an interface and works very similarly to Front Row, it's just makes things more convenient because you don't need to hook your computer up to the TV or worry about balancing your laptop on the edge your entertainment center, etc. It's the size of a hocky puck and fits seamlessly into the rest of your entertainment center.
Are they getting rid of FrontRow because they want to increase Apple TV sales? I don't know, but sometimes I get the feeling that Apple does things more out of a "let them eat cake" arrogance than outright greed. They probably decided in a meeting somewhere that Front Row wasn't "necessary" anymore because Apple TV provides a much more "elegant" solution. The fact that not everyone wants to shell out $99 for an Apple TV is probably not much of a concern to them.

  • Front row not responding after few songs

    OK.
    So here is my problem:
I turn front row on by pressing menu button on apple remote. I go to music, choose playlist (5-stars), shuffle and I do whetever I want, not using my computer, just listening to my music.
After few songs, I here sound but there is no interface in front row.
I see only a bar with song progress, there is no title, album cover... Nothing just this bar with progress.
After pressing menu button on apple remote, nothing happens, it can't shutdown front row, and the computer must be restarded by holding power button. I try Command Q, option comand Esc.... Nothing. I even press F8, F9, F10, to check if the keyboard is responding, that it adjusting keyboard backlit... No light (even it is dark and normaly it automatically turns on.
What can I do? 10.5.2, all updates installed, 2.2 Ghz MacBook Pro (With 4GB RAM), 128MB GRAPHICS.
The same was on 10.5.1, and with 2GB, I don't remember if I have tested it on 10.5.
Does anybody faces the same difficulties, does anybody have a solution? Tiger was so nice...
    Help.
    Chris

Figured I'd add my voice to the crowd. I am having the exact same problem. I usually use front row to listen to my podcasts, but the screen goes black somewhere between the 1-3 minute mark. It doesn't always do it, but if it does, it'll do it then.
One thing I noticed is that it ALWAYS happens whenever the cover flips from one side of the screen to the other. Is there a way to disable this option? The only way I can fix it right now is if I back out to the previous menu and let the song play over that. It's easy enough to do, but it's can be a bit of an annoyance if you want to adjust the volume or FF/rewind. I keep hoping that the new patches will fix such a glaring flaw, but they never seem to.

  • Front Row not authenticated but iTunes is?

I've got a Mac Mini that is pulling it's library from my Mac G4. I have it so that an alias of the library file on my Mac Mini is pointing to the Library file on my G4 (which holds all my music on a software RAID array) through the network. This was working fine for about a month. Then I did a software update on my Mac Mini (which is hooked up to my stereo and TV), and now ALL my tunes (including MP3s) cannot be played through Front Row. It tells me that I have to quit Front Row, load iTunes and authenticate the song through iTunes. But iTunes doesn't have any problem playing the music! Most of these files (95%) are MP3s anyway with no DRM!!! So, I am totally confused. Any ideas?
Again, I can play the songs without any problems by using iTunes. But if I try using Front Row (much more convenient with the remote and all!!), then I get this annoying error which forces me to quit and go straight through iTunes. Both systems have the latest OS updates.
MDD G4 + Intel Duo Core Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Flux Capacitor installed in both

I've pretty similar problem. I've a music library in Buffalo TeraStation. TeraStation is mounted and visible to Mac Mini, which is hooked to my stereo.
Most of the music was originally in the WMA Lossless. Recently I've converted them to Apple Lossless. Some music is also in lossy AAC and MP3. All music plays well with iTunes, but not with Front Row. Odd enough, I can authorize songs from iTunes one by one. They will play then with Front Row, but Front Row will forgot it later.
The primary reason to buy Mac Mini was to create a neat interface for my music collection through Mini/Front Row/Remote Controller, so I'm obviously very keen on finding a solution as well.

  • Front Row not marking video as watched properly

I kept hoping that this issue would be resolved with one of the point releases, but here we are at 10.6.3 and it's still the same for me, so here's the problem.
Before installing 10.6 I was running 10.5.8 and when using Front Row to watch a video (say a TV show I downloaded on iTunes) I'd watch it all the way to the end and the status circle next to it would show that it's been watched. iTunes would report the same status.
Since installing 10.6 when I watch a video in Front Row all the way, the status shows up as if it's only partially watched instead of completely watched. I'm sure the video was over since I let it play all the way through until it comes back to Front Row.
This is very annoying. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there some way to fix it? If not, I hope Apple can address this in 10.6.4.

    Bump.
I have tried multiple solutions and non have solved this issue. I am rather disappointed that watching content on my AppleTV or via FrontRow does not mark the show as "watched" in iTunes. FrontRow will mark it part watched and AppleTV does not effect the watched status flag at all.
I do believe this is an iTunes 10 issue though as I only saw it after upgrading to iTunes 10.
Can anyone point me to a solution?

  • Front Row not marking media as watched in iTunes after viewing.

Since updating to iTunes 10 I have noted that when I watch video in Front Row that the video file is not marked as watched in iTunes even though the full clip is played in Front Row. The podcast is marked as partially watched (half a blue ball).

  • Front Row not finding music anymore

My front row has suddenly decided that it can't find my music anymore. It used to work but now it simply tells me that i need to add music to iTunes.
    any advice?

Everything I can see in Front Row is stored on my external HD, and all was working fine until recently. Therefore, it would seem that Front Row does read from the external disc, but will not update from it. I am presuming it is the Library Data file that is not updating.
All works fine in iTunes, it's just in Front Row that I have the problem (that applies to music, movies, podcasts, etc.).
When you say add an alias, I am presuming that is to point iTunes to my music library, but that is not a problem, because iTunes is already pointing to my music library, using the "consolidation" command.
Where exactly did you put our alias ? I tried putting on in the iTunes folder (on the internal drive), but Front Row seems to look at the iTunes Library Data file. If I put a movies alias in my Movies folder (not the one in iTunes but the one in the User folder), Front Row will see that, because it sees that folder in addition to the iTunes Movie folder. However, all of my movies are in the iTunes movies folder, because they sync from there to my Apple TV.

  • Front Row not showing playlists

On my MacBook I have my playlists in iTunes in folders. In Front Row all the folders show up under playlists, and when selected they show the playlists in them, EXCEPT for the first folder of playlists - it lists all the songs in all the playlists within that folder instead.
Anyone else had this problem? Any solution?

I have this same problem. My guess is that everyone does, whether they know it or not.
My 'workaround' is to create a folder with a name that will make it always first, and put in some playlists that you don't care are not displayed in sub-playlists in Front Row.
I know, weak workaround, but at least the folders that do matter will show up properly.
Was hoping latest Front Row update (1.3) would fix this, but problem still there.

  • Front Row not displaying shared libraries

On my 13" MBP I can't get any shared libraries to show up under Sources. I've got it narrowed down to my specific account because on my fiance's 13" MB they do show up. Same if I create a new user on my computer they show up as well. I've disabled firewall and WaterRoof (unix firewall) to no avail. I've searched the internet over and while this seems to be a fairly common problem I've found no answers. I'm guessing some .plist somewhere is bad. I've deleted the FrontRow folder in Application Support under my user and no luck there.
For some background I'm running a MacMini with iTunes sharing enabled. Again a new account on my computer or my fiance's MB can access this source no problems. Anyone have suggestions on where I can focus on this problem? I checked Console and Front Row is tossing up no errors for Front Row. I'd really like to get this working. Any one got ideas? Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did enable sharing and looking for sharing on both machines. I also have disabled the OS X firewall and the unix firewalls on both machines. I also uninstalled Flip4Mac and Perian on both machines. Still doesn't work. And again it does work OK if I create a new account on my MBP and also works on my fiance's MB with no modifications. Something is set up somewhere on my specific user in OS X on my machine. I'm at a loss what that could be.

  • Front Row not playing ogg vorbis

    Hi!
I installed the OGG vorbis Quicktime components from www.xiph.org and iTunes plays these files perfectly. However, when I want to use Front Row to listen to them, I only get the message that the file cannot be played.
Can anyone help me with that?
    Thanks in advance

I have the same problem. I'm not sure if I had this same problem in 10.4.x, or if it came with Leopard ... (I just upgraded.)
Too bad Apple doesn't include OGG/Vorbis and FLAC to the list of officially supported formats, what do they have to loose?
