Front Row not outputting 5.1 Dolby on new Mac Mini

I have the new model of Mac Mini and have it successfully sending 5.1 output to my receiver from the DVD player as well as couple of other apps.
However I cannot get 5.1 to work with Front Row. The files do have 5.1 encoded (a get info in iTunes shows it). But if I open the file in QuickTime Player it only shows 2 channel audio and Front Row only sends 2 channels to the receiver.
I've searched here and around the net and found a lot of conflicting info on whether or not this works and if so how to configure it. Also some indication it may be broken in the current Snow Leopard. It's pretty disappointing because I asked the guy at the Apple Store, who seemed knowledgeable about HTPC usage, specifically if I could get 5.1 output and he said yes as long as I used the right cables and my equipment supported it.
I did try a few of the tips on the 'net for how to get 5.1 out and none of them worked. Would like to know if anyone has this working under Snow Leopard.

Simple fix:
1. Launch DVD Player (it's in the Applications folder).
2. Open DVD Player menu > Preferences and choose Disk Setup.
3. In the "Audio output" dropdown box, select the internal optical output instead of "System Sound Output".
Even though DVD Player seems like a separate application from Front Row, the settings you make in DVD Player apply to both.

  • Wireless apple keyboard not pairing at set up of new mac mini

i have just purchased a new mac mini and wireless keyboard and trackpad. i am trying to setup my mac mini but the keyboard does not pair. i have tried replacing the batteries. but as i am new to macs i dont have much of a clue. the trackpad connects fine.

I had this same issue when I purchased my Mini. Unfortunately, the initial setup of your wireless keyboard requires a wired keyboard. I don't recall where I found this information, but it may have been in the manual for the Mac wireless keyboard. I purchased a Mac wired keyboard from Fry's Electronics to log in and sync the wireless keyboard and returned the wired keyboard later that day.

  • Why does front row not have simple organization?

I currently have a hard drive hooked into my macmini which is hooked up to my TV. On my hard drive I have over 1000 movies, all purchased through iTunes. However when I use front row and i goto the movie section, I have to scroll through every movie to get to the one I want. There's no way to scroll by letter, only one by one. This is horrible and takes forever. Can apple do an update that makes the right button on the apple remote for scrolling letter by letter. For example, you click the right button to goto movies starting with B, C, D, E, F, etc. Then the down button for one by one scrolling. Also, why does front row not have genres? AppleTV does. Why not incorporate that into front row? Think, Apple, Think.

You can have sub-folders in the Movies folder and arrange your movies alphabetically that way.
But if you want to alert Apple to your idea, then use this link:

  • Using Front Row to access Video, etc. on other networked Macs.

The ability to use the new version of Front Row and Bonjour to access viedo, photos, and music on other networked Macs seems very interesting, but I have a question.
Suppose for example, I buy the new Mac Mini and set it up with my audiovisual system ... and I have other Macs in my home network (e.g.,a G4, iBook, and G5). Do the other computers have to be able to run Front Row in order for their video/photo/audio files to be accessed by the new Mac Mini and played thru my AV system?
In my case, for example, my G4, G5 (Quad) and iBook (G3) don't have Front Row and at the present time Front Row is not available for these Macs.
    G4, G5, iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Phillip,
When I was trying out FrontRow on my computer, I got access to video on my PC by simply creating an alias for the files and dropping them into the Movies folder on the mac. FrontRow will show the aliases fine and when you select them will conect to the server (if not already connected) and start playing. This is totally cool! So... you don't really need the video to be in an iTunes shared library if you dont want to go that way.
    Nevermind
PS. Of course ZeroConf is pretty cool too!

  • New Mac mini audio problem - beeping from audio output

    Hi Apple fans
Please help me. I recently purchased a new Mac mini from my local store. It's three-and-a-half weeks old as of today.
It's an i5 2.3 with 8 GB of corsair RAM.
I like to watch movies and TV on it and have the audio connected to an external amp and speakers via the headphone output.
After a reboot today I lost the sound through that output. All that I hear through it now is an electronic beeping, six notes, descending in pitch, repeating.
I have no idea what it is, other than annoying since this happened on a brand new computer. Not looking forward to the idea of losing my mini for a week as Apple figure it out, but it may be all that's left to do.
Maybe somebody here can help me out - anyone have an idea what's going on? I did an fsck -fy already, and there seems to be nothing wrong, based on that check. For completeness sake, I ran the sound over a USB sound card, and the beeping noise was not there, and sound worked fine. Ditto for the internal speaker - no weird noise there, this seems limited to the headphone out port. I've tried different cables, and even amps, and a set of small speakers without amp. The noise is there when using the headphone jack, and it's absent when using the wee internal speaker or USB-based sound. Please help?
I captured the sound on a video which I've uploaded. It's kind of jarring, so keep your hand on the volume button.

Thanks much for any input - it would be very much appreciated.

    Hi Pascal,
Certainly strange, but I have no ideas other than having it looked at by Apple.

  • New Mac Mini 2012 - HDMI dolby surround

    Hi,
I returned my Mac Mini 2011 because of the poor (lack of) dolby surround support outside of Apple iTunes.
I am very interested to know if somebody can confirm the new Mac Mini 2012 has better dolby surround support. I would like to connect the Mac Mini to my dolby surround receiver with plug and play support in Mac OS X Mountain Lion. And of course compatibility with media software (e.g. VLC or other players).
    Thanks for your comments!

The Mini will pass through Dolby and DTS encoded tracks to
any device which can decode it with XBMC, PLEX, VLC,
    MplayerX, etc.
The signals can be passed through via HDMI or optically.
The proper set up is required in the Audio Midi Setup utility
and in the app.  If you are expecting decoding within the
Mini to multichannel PCM, I don not believe any apps are available
to do that (or I am just not aware of them).
If your are expecting the higher level encodings (DTS-MA or Dolby
True HD), at least up to the 2011 models, they do not contain the
required "protected audio path" to support those formats.

  • What does the new mac mini really look like? raised or not?

looking at the images on the mac mini page http://www.apple.com/macmini/ it clearly shows the mini with it's front edge resting on the ground in all the images from the front. the reflections touch. but when you follow the 'Design' link it shows that the new mini is resting on a raised foot, so it floats.
i'm pretty sure the floating version is the real version, but why the inconsistency?

it's not an optical illusion. it's just wrong in the images. i agree with the people who made the illustrations, it looks better when it's flat on the ground and not floating.
    http://www.macrumors.com/2010/06/16/mac-mini-mid-2010-teardown-photos/
that gives you a better idea of what the new mac mini looks like from the front in a similar angle to the images on apples site. notice the very large gap between the reflection and the front face of the mini. also notice the large black shadow caused by the mini being raised up on the black circular foot on it's base. There isn't an angle that you you can move the camera to that would eliminate the shadow or distance between the reflection and the case and still see the front face as you do in the images.
it's just an odd inconsistency that misrepresents what the final product looks like.

  • Spotlight is not working on brand new Mac mini

    Hi,
I got an issue with two brand new Mac minis running 10.7.3 (11D50d):
Spotlight is not working. I'm only getting the Wikipedia-Search.
    Here's what I did:
    Installation:
    - took the stock Minis and set up two users, admin and user (limited account)
    - updatet the System
    - installed manually: Adobe Reader X, Office 2011, Firefox 12, Flip4Mac, Perian, Cyberduck, Google Earth 6.2 (the installer without the updater), VLC 2
    - installed using AppStore: CalendarBar, TextWrangler, Unarchiever
    - copied a few documents (Word and Excel files) from a PC to the Desktop
    Troubleshooting:
    - tried to restart Spotlight by adding the entire harddrive to privacy using »Spotlight« within the System Preferences
    - that threw an error "no priviliges"
    - started the System from the recovery system (on an USB-thumbdrive) and repaired permissions
    - that did not help
    - tried to restart Spotlight through the Terminal, running the command: sudo mdutil -E /
    - that command returned: No index.
    - the tried: sudo mdutil -i on /
    - returned: Error: unable to perform operation.  (-400) No index.
    - went the hard way
    - unloaded the daemon: sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
    - erased the Spotlight folder: sudo rm -fr .Spotlight-V100/
    - loaded the daemon: sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
That made everything work fine until I did a restart of the System. After the mini restarted I was back at square one...
Does anyone have an idea how to fix this issue?
Apple support suggested to reinstall the system. Something I can't do right now, as people need to work on those computers and cannot take a tow hour break...

    Hi Ray Land,
We can help narrow down the cause.  What operating system are you using on your new Mac Mini?
If you are running the Mountain Lion OS, you can download the latest driver here.  An important note is that the current print queue must be deleted before installing the new driver.  This will ensure proper communication.

  • New MAC Mini w/OSX Lion - will not boot from USB or external optical drive when attempting to use BootCamp to install Windows 7?

The University recently purchased 6 brand new MAC minis for deployment in classrooms I support.  I am attempting to create a dualk--boot environment comparable to our existing computer systems, only these machines wil be running MAC OS X Lion and Windows 7.  After following the procedures outlined in the BootCamp on-screen prompts, and attempting a few techniques I found in the tech support user-base, I am still unable to get the MAC mini to boot up from the USB flash drive, or from an external optical drive, so that I can complete the installation of Windows 7.  When using the Boot option key at start-up, all devices are displayed suggesting that they are being properly recognized, however the computer boots to a black screen with an error message indicating that "No bootable devices are  found - press any key to continue." I am able to boot into the computer's internal drive, but not from any external devices.  I fully expected that the semi-automated BootCamp procedure properly prepares the USB device for booting, and for installing the Windows 7 OS.

Meh, with the price they take for a drive in Denmark, I don't think it's worth it... They take around 160 $ for the drive (that's the cheapest MacBook drive I could find), and I am not even sure that's the one I need.

  • New Mac Mini output to S-Video

I'm trying to output to S-Video using a new Mac Mini (2010).
If I use a Mini Display to DVI adapter and then the DVI to S-Video, will that work?
    Mini Display to DVI: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB570Z/A
    DVI to S-Video: http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9267G/A
Looks like it'll "work", but will it "WORK"?
    Thanks

Adapters won't work. MDP to DVI is digital only and S-Video needs 480i (analog).
You would need an expensive converter like http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=5280

  • I have a new Mac mini and are using an Acer monitor. Unfortunately, the Acer will not show any image on a startup from cold. It does however work completely correctly when restarting from 'sleep' condition. Can anyone help? Thanks in anticipation.

I have a new Mac mini- changed from Windows XP. I have a peculiar problem. I use an Acer monitorwith the Mac which works fine when the Mac is 'un-sleeped'. But, if I have shutdown the Mac the Acer does  not recognisethe start up - at least it shows nothing on screen. When I have shut down - nowknowing the problem, I use an old Samsung monitor to cope with the start up -it does so fine - and then put the Mac to 'sleep', then change monitors andrestart the Mac - the Acer is now fine. I am using the same cables for theSamsung and the Acer. The Acer had no problems with my old Windows system -from sleep or shut down. I really do not think there is anything wrong with theAcer - could it be some sort of recognition problem? Please can anyone assist.Donald Picton

I posted the same question a day ago with no response. I'm using an Acer x193w. You actually don't have to switch monitors to get it to work. Just make sure you turn off the monitor after shutting down the Mac mini (actually push the power button on the monitor, not just let it go to sleep). If you turn on the monitor (push the power button on the monitor), then power up the Mac mini, the monitor is recognized. The issue didnt exist with Snow Leopard for me. It only started after I started using Lion. Hope this issue gets fixed In a future OS update.

  • I just bought a new mac mini and an external DVD burner. I want to burn a DVD video and it will not play on the TV but only on the computer? Need this figured out for tomorrow.

I just bought a new mac mini and an external DVD burner. I want to burn a DVD video and it will not play on the TV but only on the computer? Need this figured out for tomorrow. Can anyone help me?

Congratulations on the new Mini. Are you saying you tried burning and it does not play, or do you want to burn it only for the computer to be able to play it?
OS X Mountain Lion: Burn a CD or DVD may help.

  • I'm attempting to transfer files, address book, etc from an external hard drive to my new Mac-mini using migration assistant.  The external drive is showing up on my desktop but Migration Assistant is not seeing the drive when searching for devices

I'm attempting to migrate files, address book, maile, etc to my new Mac Mini using an external hard drive and Migration assistant.  I followed the instructions on using Migration Assistant to do this but Migration Assistant is not seeing the external drive, which is displayed on my desktop

I've been chasing this problem all afternoon. I had to reformat my internal drive on my MBP and reinstall Mountain Lion   Start up assistant wouldn't see my extrnal drive with the Time Machine files on it.  After many tries, I skipped the restore there and let the system boot.  I could see my external drive from Finder and the files looked OK.  I was told to use Migration Assistant and it had the same problem.
I saw a hint on one of these posts that the icon that you see and is label Macintosh HD is actually your backup disk and it is telling you that it has a copy of your internal Macintosh HD.  I went ahead and told it to continue and it started to restore my apps, settings, and documents.  It's been going for a couple of hours, and is close to being done.  I expect to see my old system restored when it is finished.
Wish that Apple would put some type of note that it is seeing the backup. That is most confusing and seems to be a problem for lots of users.
It's been a month or so since your post  Did your get it to work?

  • Can I not install Final Cut Studio 2 on my new Mac Mini?

I just purchased a new Mac Mini - it's time to retire my G5 Power Mac.
FCS 2.0 is unverisal - so why can I not loan the software..???

I am having a major problem, I have an old mac purchased 7 years ago and my hard drive got problems but is still working, I got a new mac having OS X system, I have final cut pro 6 and I installed it on the new os X but it didn't work, I also used the conversion method mentioned on the net in order to work on final cut pro x because final cut pro 6 is not supported on OS X, with the conversion the final cut pro X was only able to read the original tapes but was not able to read the edited material, am really stuck and I need help, can someone recommend a helpful solution? when i went to mac technical support office they said that for old macs we can only offer to change the hard drive and RAM and replacing the old hard drive for OS with a new hard drive does not gaurantee that final cut pro 6 will work also, and if something later on doesn't work in the old mac OS we can not fix it or replace it because apple does not provide any other spare parts besides the RAM and hard drive.
