Front Row not showing playlists

On my MacBook I have my playlists in iTunes in folders. In Front Row all the folders show up under playlists, and when selected they show the playlists in them, EXCEPT for the first folder of playlists - it lists all the songs in all the playlists within that folder instead.
Anyone else had this problem? Any solution?

I have this same problem. My guess is that everyone does, whether they know it or not.
My 'workaround' is to create a folder with a name that will make it always first, and put in some playlists that you don't care are not displayed in sub-playlists in Front Row.
I know, weak workaround, but at least the folders that do matter will show up properly.
Was hoping latest Front Row update (1.3) would fix this, but problem still there.

  • Front Row not updating playlist

I posted this exact problem back in June, and it was never resolved, yet somehow it was tagged as answered and then archived. Notwithstanding, I still hav the problem.
I moved my iTunes music library to an external HD by consolidating to the external HD, and since doing so, my Front Row playlist is still visible, but nothing is updating.
Additionally, my movies folder (in iTunes) is not updating in Front Row. It still shows deleted movies and does not show new additions. However, If I try and play a movie which is existing, it plays ok.
My iTunes Library Data files remain on my iMac HD as does my .xml file (as instructed).
The problem is obviously that the list from which Front row is taking its information is not updating, but where is that list, and how do I get it to update ? I had no problems prior to migrating my iTunes directory to an external drive, so the problem is related.
Any help with this would be appreciated, as effectively I am currently no longer able to use Front Row to play my Music or Movies directly on my iMac. I have Front Row 1.x installed.
    Thanks in anticipation.

Good new people, I found the answer to my problem after I posted here. I found it either here or Macosx.com or Macosxhints.com (sorry I can't give proper credit, I opened dozens of tabs and I lost count).
Anyway, this method works for me and hopefully it'll work for others as well. In iTunes, create a Smart Playlist with the name of the phantom file as the criterion. If it's hiding anywhere in your iTunes, it'll show up. Option-delete it and it won't show up in Front Row anymore.

  • Why does front row not have simple organization?

I currently have a hard drive hooked into my macmini which is hooked up to my TV. On my hard drive I have over 1000 movies, all purchased through iTunes. However when I use front row and i goto the movie section, I have to scroll through every movie to get to the one I want. There's no way to scroll by letter, only one by one. This is horrible and takes forever. Can apple do an update that makes the right button on the apple remote for scrolling letter by letter. For example, you click the right button to goto movies starting with B, C, D, E, F, etc. Then the down button for one by one scrolling. Also, why does front row not have genres? AppleTV does. Why not incorporate that into front row? Think, Apple, Think.

You can have sub-folders in the Movies folder and arrange your movies alphabetically that way.
But if you want to alert Apple to your idea, then use this link:

hi, I have the same problem.

  • Any way to get Front Row to show video playlists such as TV shows?

I can get AppleTV now to show the TV show playlists in iTunes as their own menu items. However, I can't seem to get Front Row in 10.6 to do the same thing.
I currently have iTunes 8.2.1 in 10.6.0. Is this something either upgrading to 10.6.1 or iTunes 9 will enable?

Front Row users have been waiting for this option since video playlists first appeared in iTunes quite some time ago. Unfortunately, I've never been able to make it work. Why Apple can't enable what seems like a simple options is beyond me. My iPod nano can do it but Front Row on my Mac can't. I'd advise you to send Apple some Mac OS X feedback since there's no specific form for Front Row itself:

  • Front Row not wotking correctly with iTunes smart playlist based on rating

    Hello!
I’m a new Mac user and I love the integration between Front Row and iTunes, but I’ve found an annoying bug.
In iTunes I have a smart playlist based on rating, something similar to Top Rated playlist, which works great in iTunes itself and on my iPhone and iPod. The problem is that when I play it in Front Row it adds at the bottom whatever song from my library. Anyone knows how to fix it?? Afterwards the whole thing would be perfect!
Both iTunes and FR are updated to the latest version.
    Many thanks in advance

  • Front Row not marking video as watched properly

I kept hoping that this issue would be resolved with one of the point releases, but here we are at 10.6.3 and it's still the same for me, so here's the problem.
Before installing 10.6 I was running 10.5.8 and when using Front Row to watch a video (say a TV show I downloaded on iTunes) I'd watch it all the way to the end and the status circle next to it would show that it's been watched. iTunes would report the same status.
Since installing 10.6 when I watch a video in Front Row all the way, the status shows up as if it's only partially watched instead of completely watched. I'm sure the video was over since I let it play all the way through until it comes back to Front Row.
This is very annoying. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there some way to fix it? If not, I hope Apple can address this in 10.6.4.

    Bump.
I have tried multiple solutions and non have solved this issue. I am rather disappointed that watching content on my AppleTV or via FrontRow does not mark the show as "watched" in iTunes. FrontRow will mark it part watched and AppleTV does not effect the watched status flag at all.
I do believe this is an iTunes 10 issue though as I only saw it after upgrading to iTunes 10.
Can anyone point me to a solution?

  • Front Row TV Shows in Movie folder!!??

Why are my TV shows showing up in my Movies folder when I use Front row, they are in the TV show Folder when i am in iTunes??
This started with the last itunes update, never had the problem before.
    Thanks, Mark

    *As fireflip suggested*,
+For 10.5.8 and iTunes 9 at least, select the show(s) and change the media kind to "Podcast" by getting info then going to "Options". Quit iTunes and restart then change media kind back to TV Show and restart again. They will now show up correctly in Front Row...+

I just did this and now i cannot change them back to TV shows, it will not process them. I can change them to Music and then back to Podcast but not back to TV shows or Movies.
Would approach this tip with caution
Everything fireflip suggested is correct Except that *+each file must be changed indivdually+*, no batch-editing here. I tried that and had to trash them all, then re-import them from my external HD. Also, I don't remember if I needed to close iTunes and reopen it before changing back to TV shows (I think all I had to do is close out the info dialog box, then reopen it to change back to TV). You may want to try it both ways.

  • Front Row not marking media as watched in iTunes after viewing.

Since updating to iTunes 10 I have noted that when I watch video in Front Row that the video file is not marked as watched in iTunes even though the full clip is played in Front Row. The podcast is marked as partially watched (half a blue ball).

  • FRONT ROW NOT INCLUDED IN LION????? (Rephrased as question since they erased my post!)

So I won't get my post, that many people we're discussing and figuring out a work around for Front Row, deleted by admin's I'll rephrase as a question.
WHY DID APPLE DELETE FRONT ROW? WILL THE REPLACE IT WITH ANOTHER APP? AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT THINKS APPLE TV IS POINTLESS IF YOU HAVE A MACBOOK WITH HDMI OUTPUT?
I hope instead of the admin's deleting this post (which to me shows they don't like the fact that we're downing Apple TV) they will give us an answer or some better work around. Otherwise the remote is pointless because if you can't see iTunes small text from across the room there's no way to control your Mac from across the room. Please discuss & don't delete.

No, like I said, Apple TV doesn't have a hard drive, so you can't download anything to it. You can only stream content in real time from other sources, either your Macbook, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or the internet. There is content available from Apple (and Netflix and MLB) that you can stream from the internet directly to your Apple TV, but it isn't always the same as the downloadable content. For example, you might be able to download a copy of the latest "Parks & Recreation" to your Macbook hard drive and then watch it by streaming it from your Macbook to your Apple TV. But that same episode might not show up in the Apple TV menu as a program available for direct streaming.
I think it's fair to say that Apple TV is an interface and works very similarly to Front Row, it's just makes things more convenient because you don't need to hook your computer up to the TV or worry about balancing your laptop on the edge your entertainment center, etc. It's the size of a hocky puck and fits seamlessly into the rest of your entertainment center.
Are they getting rid of FrontRow because they want to increase Apple TV sales? I don't know, but sometimes I get the feeling that Apple does things more out of a "let them eat cake" arrogance than outright greed. They probably decided in a meeting somewhere that Front Row wasn't "necessary" anymore because Apple TV provides a much more "elegant" solution. The fact that not everyone wants to shell out $99 for an Apple TV is probably not much of a concern to them.

  • Front row not installing

Yo, i bought the mac partially for the whole front row thing, and i figured it would be pre installed, but its not so i went into spotlight and i searched for front row and it was an installation package so i clicked it but it got halfway and then said try again later or not working something like that can some one please help?????

First things first, I was wrong in saying you can't download Front Row independently. Go here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/frontrow122.html
You'll get a .pkg file that you can double click and it will put its various odd bits here and there. I'll bet that fixes it. (It isn't a normal application, but .pkg files let you put in back-end stuff. I didn't think that there would be one for Front Row.)
Most files in places like /System wouldn't show up in Spotlight. (And "top" is an application that you would run in the terminal. It is Activity Monitor's granddaddy.)
It is troubling that Front Row isn't present in /System/Library/CoreServices. One other thing to check: do you have a file named "FrontRow.pkg" in /Library/Receipts?
Not every version of 10.4.7 would include Front Row, because not all Macs support it, so I can see how maybe it wouldn't be installed on some machines (or removed from some), by accident. But every intel version of 10.4.7 should have it, because every intel Mac is capable of running Front Row. But then again, Front Row is probably just a seperate companent that can be put on or left out, regardless of your architecture. And based on a lot of the comments I've read here, which I initially dismissed, it would seem that Front Row is in fact being removed from some people's machines.
Let us know if installing that .pkg file fixes it.

  • Front Row not playing Trailers or Top 10 iTunes Movies

Hoping someone might be able to help me out with this weird problem I have had for a few months (since before Leopard, but it persists since updating to 10.5.1.)
My Front Row wont play the Theatrical Trailers or iTunes Top 10 movies previews.
It happily updates the list. But whenever I click on one I get:
"The Selected Video Could Not Be Played, The Format Was Not Recognised".
I have no problems playing TV Show previews, Music Videos and my own ripped movies.
I get the same results on my Apple TV and my 18 month old intel iMac.
    Any ideas ? Much appreciated.

I'm having this same problem. The only solution I've found, scouring both the forum and internet, is to wait until it figures itself out, which is completely unacceptable. I recently updated my software and still no joy.

  • Front Row not outputting 5.1 Dolby on new Mac Mini

I have the new model of Mac Mini and have it successfully sending 5.1 output to my receiver from the DVD player as well as couple of other apps.
However I cannot get 5.1 to work with Front Row. The files do have 5.1 encoded (a get info in iTunes shows it). But if I open the file in QuickTime Player it only shows 2 channel audio and Front Row only sends 2 channels to the receiver.
I've searched here and around the net and found a lot of conflicting info on whether or not this works and if so how to configure it. Also some indication it may be broken in the current Snow Leopard. It's pretty disappointing because I asked the guy at the Apple Store, who seemed knowledgeable about HTPC usage, specifically if I could get 5.1 output and he said yes as long as I used the right cables and my equipment supported it.
I did try a few of the tips on the 'net for how to get 5.1 out and none of them worked. Would like to know if anyone has this working under Snow Leopard.

    Simple fix:
    1. Launch DVD Player (it's in the Applications folder).
    2. Open DVD Player menu > Preferences and choose Disk Setup.
    3. In the "Audio output" dropdown box, select the internal optical output instead of "System Sound Output".
Even though DVD Player seems like a separate application from Front Row, the settings you make in DVD Player apply to both.

  • Ver. 9 slow messed up Front Row, TV Shows show up missing, display issues

Ever since I've upgraded to iTunes 9 on Snow Leopard, it's been a constant joke.
-Launching it randomly consumes 100% CPU and sometimes I end up having to force quit. This problem did not exist on older versions. I repaired permissions, repaired disk, built a new iTunes library but to no avail. Same beach ball of doom.
-TV Shows in my iTunes database are showing up as Movies in Front Row even though they're correctly categorized and labeled as TV Shows and not Movies.
-When I woke up this morning, TV Shows (I might add, TV Shows not purchased through iTunes Store) are showing up as missing. If I click the file, it plays but I have to go through all 2500+ episodes showing up this way to remove that annoying icon saying the file is missing.
-I have it setup where the TV Show always played on a separate monitor set to fit to screen. Previous versions of iTunes did this with no problem but nope version 9. Not only does each episode restart on the main monitor, it plays as "original size" meaning every time I try to watch a few episodes I have to get up and click the mouse a few times to get it working properly.
Snow Leopard has left a sour taste in my mouth but iTunes 9 is really making me begin to think Apple doesn't care about quality software anymore. They need to get over this NDA nonsense and have a real beta testing program to squash these bugs before they turn millions of users into their beta testers. When Microsoft puts out software that looks stable in comparison to Apple's software as of late, there's a problem going on. Case and point, Windows 7 vs. Snow Leopard
    Apple: The New Microsoft

So like I said before Apple hasn't made a fix for this but there is a work around...and yes I've tested it but only with one file. Go to http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10443786#10443786 it has a step by step and if you have lot it's going to be kind of time consuming.

  • Front row not responding after few songs

    OK.
    So here is my problem:
I turn front row on by pressing menu button on apple remote. I go to music, choose playlist (5-stars), shuffle and I do whetever I want, not using my computer, just listening to my music.
After few songs, I here sound but there is no interface in front row.
I see only a bar with song progress, there is no title, album cover... Nothing just this bar with progress.
After pressing menu button on apple remote, nothing happens, it can't shutdown front row, and the computer must be restarded by holding power button. I try Command Q, option comand Esc.... Nothing. I even press F8, F9, F10, to check if the keyboard is responding, that it adjusting keyboard backlit... No light (even it is dark and normaly it automatically turns on.
What can I do? 10.5.2, all updates installed, 2.2 Ghz MacBook Pro (With 4GB RAM), 128MB GRAPHICS.
The same was on 10.5.1, and with 2GB, I don't remember if I have tested it on 10.5.
Does anybody faces the same difficulties, does anybody have a solution? Tiger was so nice...
    Help.
    Chris

Figured I'd add my voice to the crowd. I am having the exact same problem. I usually use front row to listen to my podcasts, but the screen goes black somewhere between the 1-3 minute mark. It doesn't always do it, but if it does, it'll do it then.
One thing I noticed is that it ALWAYS happens whenever the cover flips from one side of the screen to the other. Is there a way to disable this option? The only way I can fix it right now is if I back out to the previous menu and let the song play over that. It's easy enough to do, but it's can be a bit of an annoyance if you want to adjust the volume or FF/rewind. I keep hoping that the new patches will fix such a glaring flaw, but they never seem to.
