Front Row on an ibook

I am using an 14" ibook G4. Do anyone know how to enable or install Front Row to an ibook G4?

Your iBook does not meet the Front Row requirements. It is not Front Row enabled.
System Requirements
Mac OS X 10.4.5 or later
Front Row enabled Mac
However, from Douglas McLaughlin:
"Front Row is included for all Macs if you install Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). Note that Mac OS X 10.5 requires an 867MHz or faster G4 processor. It's possible, if you have the first model iBook G4, that you only have an 800MHz processor. If that's the case, then Leopard is not compatible with your iBook. But, if you have any other newer model iBook, you should be fine. I would be sure to max our your RAM for the best performance.
Since your iBook doesn't have an IR receiver, you'd have to buy a third party remote control. The Keyspan RF Remote for Front Row is specifically designed for use with Front Row. It's "radio" frequency rather than infrared so you don't need any line of sight between the remote and the computer. But, it does have a USB dongle."

front row will not appear in dock after upgrading. Cannot put front row into dock because it is not possible to select dock while front row is running after upgrading to leopard 10.5.1
click on download link at the following site:
    http://lucidsystems.org/luciddocktools.html
install the program. Then go to the utilities folder and start terminal. In the terminal window paste the following and press enter:
    additemtodock /Applications/Front\ Row.app
front row will appear in dock. you can then run front row-minus the remote control which ibooks don't have.

You don't need to wait for an application to run to keep it in the Dock, Front Row included. And you don't need to add a utility or to use Terminal to do this.
Instead, just navigate in the Finder to the Applications folder (or wherever it is stored) & drag it from the Finder window to the Dock.

  • IBook G4 +Front Row =?

I have an iBook G4. I really want to have Front Row. As I understand it, one really doesn't need the remote to control, but rather, one can use System Preferences to set control keys. However, is there a way in which I can download and install Front Row to an iBook.

Front Row 1.2.2 is working great on my iBook 12" 800MHz.
I copied the software-update-installed Front Row.app from my Intel iMac to my iBook.
I backed up the hacked v1.0.1 first, including the prefs. Since you can't remove Front Row.app from the /System/Library/CoreServices because it's "in use" you need to restart holding the shift key down for a Safe Boot.
Login and then remove the hacked version after using admin pw.
Then copy the 1.2.2 version from a properly installed "legal" Mac to the CoreServices folder. I also removed the prefs file as a safeguard as well.
Restart and you're in! It is much, much snappier! It's really unbelievable the difference.
Now with my iBook/10.4.6 640Mb/800MHz, I am NOT experiencing any problems...yet...and maybe the problems are isolated to PowerBooks as mentioned in another post.
But hey, it works now for me! Hack-free!

  • Mighty Mouse and Front Row

Is there any way i can use my mighty mouse to control front row (got an ibook, so remote won't work)?

It turns out that the mouse ball was just incredibly dirty--I cleaned it out by rolling the mouse upside-down on a clean sheet of paper and all is well.

  • Front row on 'power pc'

ive seen people running front row on the powerbooks and iBooks which "shouldn't" be doing that
Is this possible to do and if so how...

It is possible, but not recommended neither supported by apple. It is a hack, so you should keep in mind that it can mean a risk to your computer. However, if you are sure you want to do it just google "front row enabler" and you will get your answer.

  • Front row - black screen with audio

I recently installed Leopard on my old iBook.
When i start Front row, I can see the menus , trailer list, movie list etc., but when i play anything, the screen goes blank, i can see a progress bar moving(which auto-hides), and audio is also OK, but there is no video.the screen just goes blank and remains that way.
I have perian installed on my machine and all videos work OK in quicktime, VLC etc.
any possible solutions for this? has anyone else also faced this issue ?
    thanks.

I can get a picture with Quicktime...but if I try to get enlarge the screen, the picture often becomes corrupted. I'm just rather annoyed that I spent $40 on this series and am having these issues. I only downloaded iTunes because there was no other option of getting this show. I've waited 24 years to see the entire "Liberty Stone" Mini-series (there was a problem with the tapes DIC released and they were missing eps)...so this just feels like a taunt.
I'm hoping this gets fixed quickly. It sounds like there is a lack of standardization with the DRM being used on these files.

  • Auto Sleep stopped by front row.

    Hey,
Ive recently turned my iMac G5 into an alarm clock, using the sheduler to turn off at a specific time, and turn on at another time to then play music at a full volume.
However my problem lies in it turning itself off. Genraly I use Front Row to play some music as i fall asleep. However when the sheduler goes to turn itself off. I find that itunes (the app which runs behind front row) has prevented shut down.
Is there anyway of stopping Front row (and itunes) from doing this?
    Thanks
    James

I tried to do this when I first got my iBook G4, and I found it very complicated and fiddly to do. Since then, I have used many alarm and sleep applications, but most of them have had their problems and flaws. All that I can do now is recommend that you try my favourite application Aurora. It is a freeware application that has options for both setting an alarm, plus turning your mac off after you've fallen asleep. It is a very easy to use application, and is highly recommended by me to any of my friends. Although there are little flaws in the application, you may contact the author, and he will sort them out straight away. I did submit a bug of my own, and too my surprise, he emailed me back the same day, explaining how he will fix the problem and even gave me a preview version of the next update, just to check and see whether the bug was still there.
As well as all this, you will no longer have to worry about the system scheduler, as Aurora automatically sets itself to turn on/wake your mac a couple of minutes before an alarm is set to go off.

  • Audio Problem Front Row DVD

    Hi:
Playing a DVD via front row and through a tv, the sound was going up and down, tested it with another dvd and it was the same. Could be it the cabel which is Philex SLx Gold 3.5mm jack to 2 Phono Personal Audio Lead?
BTW sound playing music through front row and through the tv speakers produces no issue
    mac mini 1.66 dc | ibook 12" | MBP 17" Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Since you're playing a DVD in stereo only (not multi-channel surround sound) with that cable, is it possible that the "downmixing" from multi-channel audio is not being handled very well? Does your DVD have an audio option for 2.0 Stereo only?

  • Using Front Row to access Video, etc. on other networked Macs.

The ability to use the new version of Front Row and Bonjour to access viedo, photos, and music on other networked Macs seems very interesting, but I have a question.
Suppose for example, I buy the new Mac Mini and set it up with my audiovisual system ... and I have other Macs in my home network (e.g.,a G4, iBook, and G5). Do the other computers have to be able to run Front Row in order for their video/photo/audio files to be accessed by the new Mac Mini and played thru my AV system?
In my case, for example, my G4, G5 (Quad) and iBook (G3) don't have Front Row and at the present time Front Row is not available for these Macs.
    G4, G5, iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Phillip,
When I was trying out FrontRow on my computer, I got access to video on my PC by simply creating an alias for the files and dropping them into the Movies folder on the mac. FrontRow will show the aliases fine and when you select them will conect to the server (if not already connected) and start playing. This is totally cool! So... you don't really need the video to be in an iTunes shared library if you dont want to go that way.
    Nevermind
PS. Of course ZeroConf is pretty cool too!

  • Front Row - Did the 10.6.3 update break keyboard control?!

So, I came across an odd problem today when helping a friend get her data moved from an old iBook G4 onto a new MacBook Pro 2.66GHz. I walked her through setting up the Migration Assistant while on the phone and drove over to help her install some new software. When I got there, she said she was exploring some of the new apps and Front Row looked like it had frozen on her. It wouldn't respond to the arrow keys, Return, or even Command-Escape. Force-quitting via Command-Opt-Esc worked though. I opened Front Row again, and the same thing happened. For kicks, I grabbed my Apple Remote from my backpack and tried it... it seemed to have control just fine, but the keyboard still didn't. Baffled, I told her I'd look into it more later.
When I got home, I tried it on my MBP 2.53GHz and... low and behold... keyboard control wouldn't work on my machine either! I find this very strange because less than a month ago under 10.6.2 (I held out on 10.6.3 for quite a while... was just lazy, I admit) I KNOW I had full control without needing any Apple Remote to do it! I used it for photo slideshows, movies, and quicktime trailers with NO PROBLEM at all. Now, suddenly, under 10.6.3, I can't use Front Row without an Apple Remote?! What gives??
Am I being stupid or blind to some simple setting somewhere, or did Front Row seriously take a change for the worse and disable keyboard control?? If anyone else can chime in here, it would be most appreciated, particularly if you know of a way to help me regain control like I had before without needing an Apple Remote. (For a computer that sits less than two feet away from me, this is a real annoyance!) Thanks for the help!

I have tried that now, but still the same and now my wi-fi printer has stopped working - it is in the print and scan folder and showing as idle but when I send something to print it appears in the folder but does not print. This too was working fine before the update.
I am afraid as a newbie Mac person all this is just far too much for me. After spending £1500 on a machine only 4 days ago, over £50 on books from Amazon to make sure I learn about the Snow Leopard OS X platform, I do not expect to have these issues from just a simple update. When I wanted to turn back the system to 10.6.2 Apple Care told me I have to re-load the iMac operating system to put it back into its original state - on a pc you would just have to do system restore and the whole thing would have been corrected in 5 minutes whilst I waited for all the apparent issues to be resolved relating to the current update.
I have packed it and today it is going back to the shop - sorry I really tried but this experience is just too much for me - but thanks for all your help.

  • Front Row Theatrical Trailers Icons Blank

    Hi,
I currently have all the latest released updates (itunes 7, qt update, front row update, etc) released september 12. Everything functions correctly except the preview icons for theatrical trailers.
Prior to todays updates I would see a picture of a DVD cover as the artwork for a trailer. Now I see a rectangle with the QuickTime symbol and a question mark below. The titles of the trailers still show when I move from box to box and the previews start loading normally.
I tried removing my front row property list and the front row cache. I also created a new user and had no luck with that account. I've restarted my machine, disconnected all devices (macbook black) and tried repairing permissions. No luck.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -j

Update: I've just installed again QT 7.1.3 using
Software Update and now the trailers thumbnails look
    fine.
I suspect the cause of this problem to be the fact
that I upgraded to 7.1.3 using the QT installer from
    apple.com, not the Software Update.
Mine has the problem and I used Software Update first. I tried installing again with no luck.
Where can you get the downgrade to 7.0.1? I may try that.

  • Keynote + External Projector + Front Row Issue

When I have a lecture that is being projected with either my InFocus LP130 or in my most recent experience with the projector provided by the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and I have to control the slide show using my Apple Front Row remote control it will Intermittently jump to the final chart. When I use my LP130 remote, this has never happened. On my most recent lecture at the Denver Museum, this happened three or four times during a 35-chart lecture. On my three previous lectures since my MacBook Pro arrived, it has occurred once or twice.
My preferred, and most successful approach is to have my MacBook Pro on the Podium where I can physically control the flow from the Computer. Obviously, I can't control this, since I am always doing lectures on someone else's facility and generally have to work within their constraints.
In the past four years I have been using my Powerbook G4 Aluminum for the lectures and obviously didn't have FrontRow and this issue of intermittent switching to another out of sequence chart, didn't happen.
I am just wondering if anyone else has identified this issue?

I use an Infocus LP340 weekly with iBooks and Keyspan Digital Media Remote since KN was released with all versions and have never had this phenomena. I never use the Infocus remote.

  • What does Front Row need?

    I've been wondering about this a bit. I've got a 1.2 ghz G4 iBook running OS 10.4.11.
I've seen Front Row on other Macs, but for some reason it doesn't install on mine.
Is the Apple Remote capability a hardware requirement? Or is there just something on the 10.4 install disk I missed?
    Thanks

I've seen Front Row on other Macs, but for some reason it doesn't install on mine.
Front Row wasn't part of the retail OS prior to Mac OS X 10.5, but was bundled with some Macs. You need to install Mac OS X 10.5 to get it.

  • Does Front Row work with PowerPC G4?

Does Front Row work with PowerPC G4? Where can I get it?

There are ways, but it has limited ablities since you don't have the IR based remote needed. There is a "hack" of sorts which tricks front row to install on other Macs. I have it on my Power Mac G4 and my ibook as well. Just do a google search.
There is nothing illegal about the hack since you download the free update from the apple website. All the hack does it make the installer think you have a iMac or Macbook Pro.
