Front Row on external monitor?

I have a Dell 2407WFP connected to my MBP. Is there anyway to get Front Row to display on the Dell monitor instead of the MBP? I did some searching, but haven't found a good answer. I want my MBP to be the primary display, not the Dell.

^bump... anyone?

• Displaying front row on external monitor (extended desktop)

Hi,
I've buyed a MacBook (black) and a VGA cable to connect to an external monitor. I've configured as extended desktop, no problem to work with regular apps...
But i would like to display Front Row on the external monitor, and not on the internal... it should be possiible as i see many people talking about this kind of configuration, but i do not success...
Can someone tell me how to display front row on the external monitor, or point me where i can configure front row ?
Thanks in advance

Thanks, it's a good beginning, but it make the external display also the default for everything else like menu bar,... i do not want to use the whole macbook on the TV, i just want to use the DVD, video clips, photos,... on the TV... it seems for me a regular use : using the mac for the softwares,... and the TV only for the multimedia display...

• Can I use Front Row on external monitor with MacBook Pro's cover closed?

I've seen that you can use the remote to control Front Row even when the lapatop's cover is closed (on a MacBook Air). Is it possible with a first generation MB Pro? Are there special settings?
Thx

You can use a MacBook Pro in "clamshell" mode if you have the AC adapter plugged in for power, an external display attached and an external keyboard and mouse (USB or Bluetooth) to wake the computer after it's been closed. This is the official word from Apple:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131
However, even if you don't have a keyboard and mouse, you should still be able to wake the MacBook Pro using the Apple remote by pressing the "menu" button. (You do still need to have the power plugged in and the display plugged in.)

• Front Row with 2 monitors ....

I have a second montor hooked up to my laptop. I would like Front Row to play on one display leaving me the ability to work on the other display. Is this possible? Either that or prevent Front Row from displaying in full screen mode and work more in a windown on the display.

Sorry, Front Row takes over all the connected displays. The main display (the one with the Dock and menubar) will display the Front Row interface and the other screen will remain dark.
Is there any way - AppleScript perhaps - to allow either auto-switching of the main display, or enabling 'Mirror Displays', when Front Row starts?
Normally I have my MBP setup in extended desktop for when I connect my external monitor or connect to my TV (DVI->HDMI adaptor) for watching BBC iPlayer etc., however I want FR to run on the external monitor/TV if one is detected.
It seems to me that is how FR is (or should be) intended to be used - on a big screen for boring family and friends with your holiday photos/videos etc.

• Can Front Row use external HDs for Movies?

Hey, I download and store podcasts, vidcasts, and movies on my external USB/firewire HD and I was wondering if Front Row could play them off of there. From what I've read, Front Row accesses movie files from ~/Movies but not elsewhere. Could I perhaps add an alias to the folder with my other movies to trick Front Row into playing them?

No no no...you don't need iTunes, but yes, you can do it. I just posted this in another thread so here it is again...this is how I do it. For short, I put an alias of the folder on the external drive (or just a separate partition on internal HD) into my Movies folder, and it works! Here you go, from http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1837976#1837976:
All you have to do is make an alias of the folder your videos are in and put it in your Movies folder in your Home folder. To do this, click and drag the folder on your external drive where your videos are stored. Hold down Command and Option, then drop the folder in your Movies folder, noting the little arrow indicating you are making an alias.
The same can be done with your iTunes setup if you're clever. Move your iTunes folder out of your Music folder in your Home folder and onto your external drive, then put all your music files inside the iTunes folder in iTunes Music. Then make an alias of your iTunes folder back into your Music folder in your Home folder. Aliases can also be made by selecting a file and choosing Make Alias from the File menu in the Finder.
I have used this setup for awhile, even over a network for a period. Works great. Good luck.
• Streaming to Front Row constantly rebuffering

I'm running Front Row on a MacBook and trying to stream video from an iMac.
Both computers are connected with ethernet.
Front Row rebuffers every 10 minutes or so when I try to stream a video with a high bit rate, 4622 kbps for example.
The video is 45 minutes in length and takes only 4 - 5 minutes to copy between the two computers.
Activity Monitor indicates a transfer rate of approximately 10 MB/s when copying the file.
When streaming the file in Front Row, however, Activity Monitor indicates a transfer rate of approximately 500 KB/s. It also takes approximately 1 minute before it starts playing at all.
A video with a bit rate of 4622 kbps should require a transfer rate of 578 KB/s just to keep up.
Why does Front Row utilize so little network bandwidth? Are there any settings I can tweak? I'm frustrated that I need to copy the file over to the MacBook to watch it when Front Row should be more than capable of streaming it over the network.
Thanks,
Matt
P.S. I also tried to stream it directly from iTunes. iTunes doesn't seem to stream at all; it copies the movie over completely before it starts playing it. The network was utilized 10 MB/s for 3 or 4 minutes, the movie started playing and the network went idle.

Confirming the Front Row issue - Activity Monitor reports a maximum of ~530 KB/s when streaming a 4900 kbps movie (wirelessly). The movie takes a while to load, and rebuffers throughout.
Streaming from iTunes didn't work at all.
I also tried streaming the same movie to an AppleTV (wirelessly). Activity Monitor now reported 4+ MB/s, the movie played instantaneously, and it never rebuffered.

• Front Row on an External Display

**Note that this is for Leopard's Front Row and only may not apply to Tiger's**
Here's an explanation of the bugs/irksomes now facing Front Row
1. The screensaver option can be buggy so go to preferences within Front Row to disable it.
2. Whatever screen you use front row on, the other will be black.
3. Front Row does not play video in mirroring mode, period.
4. Front Row, when opened, will display on whatever monitor is set as your primary display at that time.
5. Even after exiting it, if you check it the activity monitor it will still run in the background for 30 minutes (not sure on that time frame).
6. If you open it up again before it is shutdown, it will try to display on whatever was set as the primary display when it was first launched.
Okay, now that you understand that, here is somethings to keep in mind
-When you initially open it, the settings get stuck, so if you opened it with the wrong display set as your primary monitor, just quit it in the activity monitor, switch the main monitor in your display system preferences, and then reopen it.
-You can trick it to display on your secondary display by enabling mirror-mode, opening front row, exiting front row (not quiting), disabling mirror mode, and lastly reopening front row. Effectively, it gets stuck to display on the external display and does so once you turn mirroring off. This isn't even remotely elegant but is my preferred method.
-If you have your external display connected while your computer is asleep, pressing a button on your remote will automatically wake it and use the external display as your primary/only monitor. This means that Front Row will display on your TV very easily if you put your computer to sleep then wake it with the remote BUT you must always be mindful that if you had opened it recently, you may have to quit it first.
The only last suggestion I have is that if you want quick and easy access to quitting front row, you can create an applescript to quit it with this
tell application "Front Row" to quit
If anyone knows how to change primary displays using applescripts please post as ideally a script could be created that would just make sure Front Row was quit, switch displays, then would open it streamlining the entire process.
Well really ideally apple would make Front Row a little more dynamic with the option to display on the external display and smart enough to know which one that is but this problem existed in the last version too and they never fixed it then so....

Well, just putting the display in sleep mode won't work as, for some reason I don't understand, sleeping the display turns off the external monitor.
Thinking a little more clearly now, the method of sleeping the computer only works for the portable Macs as the lid must be down while it wakes up for it to work.

• Front Row causing sleep when media on external drive

Hello. I have my media on an external drive, a WD My Book. I am getting a "no signal" message from my monitor when browsing with Front Row. If I click the remote, it will wake back up, for about 20 seconds.
It seems like the new Front Row doesn't use iTunes as intimately as before.
Where is my Video Podcast list?
Where's the cool animation transition when you envoke Front Row?

I did this and it didn't stop the "blinking." The machine still appears to sleep the display for about a second every 10 minutes or so (about the amount of time my Energy Saver is set to kick in).

• How do I get front row to see external drive

I have my home movies stored on an external drive connected to my iMac, but front row can't seem to see the external drive. Anyone help me on this?

Never mind. I figured it out. I have to create an alias folder of the movie folder on the external drive and stick it in the imovie folder on the mac.

• Automatically switch Front Row display to  a second monitor

I know that it is possible to change the "primary monitor" in the System Proferences, start Front Row, and then manually change to primary monitor back later on, but is there a way to do this automatically?
Thanks

Hi Susan....
I occasionally use my MBP with my lcd TV and didn't want to mess around with stuff all the time, so I just mirror my MBP display onto the LCD TV. The MBP normally changes it's display to match the TV, and changes back when I disconnect. I also turn the brightness down to zero on the mbp to save the display!
Problem solved!

• Front Row unusable on external Displays

Hello,
I decided to install Leopard this morning but I have finally decided to go back to my Tiger disk clone and wait for 10.5.1. Leopard is full of problems.. but this message is regarding Front Row.
Basically!! It's totally unusable with external displays!!
- No matter which display you set up as primary (by dragging the menu bar in Display Prefs), Front Row will always show up in the laptop LCD.
- If you decide to mirror de display, instead of extending your desktop, then there's another problem: the video will disappear! Yes, that's right, there's no video output when mirroring the displays, just a black screen with the movie's audio.

Interestingly enough, I made an "Archive and Install" and FrontRow opened up on my external display. It's quite strange.

• Front Row - External display

Hi everyone,
Hope I'm posting in the right forum.
I was so happy when Snow Leopard (automatically) used my external display for Front Row display. However, it left me with a new "wish".
Front Row fades the display on my iMac to black... Is there a way to leave the display active so I can use the computer while my wife watches films?

Moved to the Front Row forum.

• Front row on an external screen

Is this possible yet, it really would be handy.

When you drag the menu bar to the external display (e.g. your television) using display settings you can use Front Row on it, but it will then black out the main display.
It would be great if Apple could make it optional where to display the FR interface, without the need to dig into the display settings.
My 20-inch display is very nice, but I rather watch hour-long stuff on my tv from my couch than sit at my desk.

• Mp4 videos on external harddrive in front row

Hi
I wanted to se my movies on my new mac mini, so I had bought 2 750 GB external harddrive. I have used handbreak to convert my dvd to mp4.
I had made a alias, so Front row can find the movie on my external drive, but I can't get it to made a art work as if the file is on the same external harddrive where my Itunes music is.
I have tryed MeTaX, but the same resualt as if i don't use it.

Another option would be have your iTunes library be located on your external drive and import all of your movies into iTunes. Add artwork to each of your movies via iTunes and the artwork would be displayed in Front Row. This could get tedious, though. A since you have two external drives, you'd have to build your library using one existing drive then once it becomes full, change the location of your library to the second drive.
Hopefully this helps! The more I think about it, the more I dislike the idea, though. But whatever works for you.
