  • Front Row is Stuck

My Front Row is stuck on one picture from iPhoto and all I can do is press F9 or F10 to see particular applications, and from there us Front Row to launch iTunes, but that is it. I cannot stop iPhoto and I cannot force quit Front Row. I could force quit iPhoto but am afraid to lose a book that I have been putting together in iPhoto. As a recent (and otherwise extremely happy) Mac convert, does anyone have any hints? Would iPhoto save recent changes automatically? Any other way to quit front row?
iMac Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thanks, but unfortunately I could not actually get to the utility page to start the activity monitor. In any case, iPhoto finally crashed by itself but then I lost all of my work in iPhoto.

  • Anybody know if adding more ram to an iSight iMac will speed up front row

Just got a 20" iSight iMac (love it) with the base ram but as most people seem to be experiencing, front row seems a little sluggish. Just wondered if anybody knows if sticking another gig of ram in it would improve front row performance?

The answer is absolutely yes. I ran with 512MB for a while and I noticed it seemed like I was getting PageIns every now and again. Sometimes quite often if iPhoto or other big apps were open. A pagein is like virtual memory in OS9. RAM has to be swapped to disk to free it up to do another task.
Check out Activity Monitor- it'll give you an idea of what's going on. Don't get me wrong MacOS X is very good at managing its resources. However disk paging is a slow reality.
I upgraded to a total of 1.5GB of RAM a while ago. The difference is nothing short of phenomenal. All the big pauses in FrontRow are gone (occasionally iTunes still has to fire up if it was closed...2-3 Sec). I leave iPhoto open all the time and everything is always snappy. Daskboard is another big beneficiary- it's way better. I think 1.5GB was a good choice because I still use it all every now and again- perhaps 2 PageIns/Day, but not often enough to notice. Even upgrading to a 1GB would certainly be a big help but remember if you don't benefit from 1.5GB now you will in a year.
    Cheers, Ed.
P.S. Now is a great time to buy, prices have stabilized, find a good sale and buy today- you won't regret it. I paid $96 total including all tax and shipping for a 1GB stick.

  • Hardware alternative to Front Row for pre-iSight G5 iMac?

Hey there, I know I've asked previously if there was a version of Front Row available for G5 iMacs that didn't come w/ the iSight built-in. Since I'm considering replacing my PC altogether with this machine (and getting a MacBook for mobile use), I'm really only missing one thing... We use the PC for pushing video out to our TV for edited TV shows or movies. We have an ATI Remote Wonder which uses a USB-connected RF remote to play, pause, skip, etc. Does such a device exist for the pre-isight model imacs? Essentially I'd like to be able to play a DVD or a movie in VLC and be able to pause, skip back, etc. without going to the machine. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
    -Mike

As it turns out the Remote Wonder software for Mac did just about everything I needed it to! Anyone looking for a somewhat close match to front row (or at least remote control) should look for a used Remote Wonder RF remote - so far it's working great. (Already had it so no extra dough either!) I like this Mac more and more every day.

  • ISight, Front Row and Apple remote problems

I've been using my iMac G5 with the built in iSight for a month now with no problems, however a few days ago I tried to pause iTunes with the remote and nothing happend.
I have since tried to use Front Row and cannot launch it with the keyboard shortcuts, or indeed, find it anywhere on my hard drive. Very strange as I have certainly not deleted it and only updated it to 1.01 recently.
I have also tried to use my iSight to test the remote using an Apple help sheet but when I launch iChat AV it tells me I have no camera installed! I know it did work as I took a photo of myself when I first set the Mac up.
Apple's advice on deselcting the 'Disable remote control infrared receiver' checkbox in 'system preferences>scurity' confuses me further as I cannot find this checkbox anywhere.
I have performed all the updates with Software Updat, repaired permissions and checked the disk with no problems found.
    Any advice?
    Thanks in advance. Jon

Front Row will be included with the next version of Mac OS X to come out next year, version 10.5 (Leopard). Until it's released, there is no legal way for you to use Front Row. Also, until it's released, we won't know what hardware will work with it (as far as remote controls). If history is any indication, it will be a $129 upgrade for your current Mac mini.
There are a couple of options for you right now, though. There's a shareware program called Media Central that will work similar to Front Row for you.

  • Thinking of buying iMac, Front row Question

I'm thinking of getting a new iMac that would be hooked up to my media center downstairs and used by my wife for non-front row purposes (email, internet access). My problem is I've read somewhere that Front Row might not work with music from a connected iPod or shared libraries over a home network. Since my 140GB music collection is upstairs on my G5 this is an issue I need to have clarified because not being able to view content on any of my networked macs would negate one of the reasons I'm buying this mac.
So, can Front Row play music from my networked G5 upstairs or am I going to be better off fixing up my old Pismo to give to my wife and buying something like the Squeezebox (http://www.slimdevices.com/) for my media needs?

Front Row needs the audio files to be in the designated iTunes folder. However, I don't believe this folder needs to be on the iMac. If you changed the iTunes Folder Location in iTunes Preferences to the networked G5 then I believe Front Row will play those tracks from the G5 as long as you have the G5's hard drive mounted via File Sharing.
The following is from iTunes Help:
If you try to play a song in Front Row on your iMac G5 (iSight) but the application can't find the song because it's not in the default iTunes library, you'll see an alert message that either says, "iTunes cannot play this song" or "Communications error." If this happens, just show Front Row where you keep your music.
If you keep all of your music in one folder location:
    Open iTunes.
From the iTunes menu, choose Preferences.
Click the Advanced tab, then click the General tab below it.
Click Change next to the "iTunes Music folder location" section.
Navigate to and select the folder that contains your tunes.
    Click Choose.
    Click OK.
If your music is stored in different folder locations:
    Open iTunes.
From the Advanced menu, choose Consolidate Library to copy songs from all locations to your default iTunes Music folder. Let the consolidation process finish before you go back to Front Row.
Tip: If you want to play just one song from another folder, play the song in iTunes first. Front Row will be able to find it once iTunes knows where the song is located.

  • Front Row on 2nd Gen iMac G5

Does anyone know whether it will be possible to run Front Row on a 2nd Gen iMac G5 using an Apple Remote?
Hos does the Apple Remote work? If it's a Bluetooth device, I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work?
Unless 'Front Row' is a 'hard-wired' ROM application?
I like the look but I bought a 2G recently, which I think is the nuts...to be honest the built in i-Sight is of little interest to me...makes me think of internet cafes...and it's going to make the London Store even more of a foreign exchange student hangout.

It says front row and photo booth are included in the software bundled with the iMac. " More software
In addition, the iMac G5 comes with an incredible bundle of software:
    • iLife ’05, which includes the latest versions of iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie HD, iDVD and GarageBand
    • Front Row
    • Photo Booth
    • iWork ‘05 30-day trial
    • AppleWorks
    • Quicken 2006 for Mac
    • 2006 World Book
    • Nanosaur 2
    • Marble Blast Gold
    • Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Test Drive "
I dont see why apple wont make that available for purchase for those of us who just bought that last rev Imac in May.

  • Imac G% tiger and Front Row Problem

Front Row do not recognize my Itunes library (tv shows, music etc...)
How can I make it work
I have Tiger and Imac g5(isisght)
    Thanks

Is your profile correct? Is there a reason you're still running Mac OS X 10.4.6? I think you'll need to make sure your iLife applications and iTunes are up-to-date as well as Mac OS X for everything to work correctly together. Mac OS X can be updated to 10.4.11, iTunes can be updated to 7.6.1 and QuickTime can be updated to 7.4.5 all for free. Which version of iLife do you have? '06 or '08? You'll need to make sure you have the most recent versions of iPhoto as well...

  • New iMac install problem with Front Row

Hi I just got my imac yesterday, the desktop intel core duo with mac os x tiger. It comes with front row but when I clicked on it to open, it said I needed to install, so I followed the instructions to the letter, and when it starts to install front row, it says: "there were errors installing the software. Please try installing again." Which I did repeatedly, plus restarting. No go. Can anyone give me a tip on what I should try next? Thanks. you can email me [email protected]

Normally to activate Front Row you press the Menu button on the Apple Remote that came with your Mac or you can use the keyboard shortcut of Command(Apple) + Escape.

  • Front Row doesn't work with my Intel iMac

I've had my ICD iMac for about 2 months. It used to work, but now when I push the 'Menu' button nothing happens.
    I've rebuilt permissions and restarted.
If I'm running iTunes I CAN move forward and back tracks.
    Any ideas?

Have you updated Front Row to 1.2.1?

Another option might be to install the 10.4.6 combo update.

  • Front Row disappeared from my iMac

I already read other topics to solve my problem but no one can answered my question. I updated software to Mac OS X (10.4.9) then my Front Row was disappeared. I tried to press command+esc from my keyboard. I also click menu twice from apple remote and so on but nothing happened. Finally, I tried to install bunbled software only but it appeared "Bundled Software cannot be installed on this computer. Make sure your system meets the requirements." What am I doing wrong? What can I do? I want my Front Row back!
    Thank you very much

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
You can look to see if Front Row is really gone, it should be in this path:
    /Macintosh HD/System/Library/CoreServices/
If it's really gone, you will need to reinstall the bundled software from your install disk. The message you see should only appears if you're trying to use the install disk from a different model computer. Are you certain you have the right install disk that came with your iMac? If it is the right disk, it's possible it's been damaged in some way. You might need to get the disk(s) replaced.

  • Front Row: Photo Doesn't Play Subfolders on new iMac!

There doesn't seem to be a discussion group dedicated to Front Row but I'm having a problem with the Photo section so I guess this is the closest!
When viewing the Library, Albums or Folders in the 'root' directory of iPhoto through Front Row, everything works fine.
    BUT
If I try to view an Album or Folder in a sub-directory, the contents of that Album is not displayed. Instead the contents of which ever 'root' Album was last viewed is displayed instead.
This is easy for someone to check, can anyone with a new iMac dupliacte this issue?

Still, strange behaviour though. I hope they fix this with the Front Row update that's coming.

  • Front Row a complete failure on new 24" iMac aluminum with Leopard.

One of the features I have enjoyed on my recent Macs, Front Row, is now one of the biggest disappointments on my latest iMac. Each movie will start by showing the usual progress bar extending to the extreme right (2.29 minutes,it would seem,) but then the actual movie clip stops and starts, sometimes in ten second increments. While all this is going on, the progress bar will indicate repeated progress out to the extreme right end of the bar, but it is then followed by the small segments of the clip, sometimes as many as ten segments until it finally reaches the end and puts me out of my misery. Anyone else experiencing this or has Steve singled me out for some rather cruel and unusual punishment ?

The strange thing is that Front Row works just fine on my Apple TV.
The application on the Apple TV is called "Back Row" inside Apple. I don't think this will have anything to do with Front Row on your Mac. (Except for the fact that both might share some music files, movies and pictures from your Mac.) But if your movies files do play on the Apple TV, it might indicate a problem with iTunes, QuickTime or Front Row on your Mac. All of those parts need to work together for Front Row to function correctly.
