Front Row over bluetooth tethering

Occasionally when I'm on the road I tether my Macbook Pro to my iPhone and connect to the Internet that way. When I try to use Front Row to view theatrical trailers, it complains about not being connected to the Internet, even though I have a connection through bluetooth. I'm assuming this is because Front Row checks whether the Ethernet and/or Wireless network interfaces are connected (neither are in this set up) and returns this error if they aren't. Is there any way to make this work? Thanks.

You might try plugging in an Ethernet cable (even though it's not plugged into a network). Some people have tricked Front Row into working this way.

  • Front Row and bluetooth headset

    Hi
I'm using a bluetooth headset (no mic) and each time I enable it I don't have sound at all in front row. It works fine when I use this headset and run quicktime or itunes fron desktop but as soon as i switch to front row it stop working. Sometimes I may hear 1 or 2 sound effect when I scroll in the fron row menu but as soon as I try to play a movie or a music, I don't hear anything.
Is there any tips to know to make them work together ?
    Tks,

I have the exact same issue. I've filed a bug with apple, but no response. This is with the latest version of Leopard, on a Core 2 Duo Mac Mini

  • Videos doesn't play in Front Row photos slideshows...

Well that's a really annoying problem that I was hoping it would be fixed in Snow Leopard, but IT DIDN'T!
When you are in iphoto and select an album ( which contains photos & videos) for slideshow..everything is fine!
In contrast to this, when you select the same album in front row for slideshow, the videos don't play and instead of this you get a black screen.
I have tried this to many machines in Applestores and all behave exactly the same

Fouster - you seem alone, but you're not.
I just bought a new Mac Mini to set up as my HTPC (if it passes the wife test..!). I settled on Front Row over Plex for now, since the latter still feels half baked/overly ambitious. When I came to setting up the Photo part, I got the exact same problem you are describing. Nothing but blackness, where video clips should play, and for what seems to be the duration of the actual clip. iPhoto plays them beautifully. What gives?
I have seen other threads where this question got archived without a fix or even a response.
Someone seemed to have fixed it by removing QT7 Pro properly since there was some conflict with QTX. I have a mint Mini, so shouldn't be my issue.
Maybe it has to do with some obscure CODEC missing in QT - I have Perian and Flip4Mac installed but will try further using this link:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html
I'll keep you posted. This is some moral support for now.

  • Aperture shared over a network for viewing with Front Row?

Aperture shared over a network for viewing with Front Row? I can view iPhoto from my laptop or desk top but I cannot find a way to share Aperture over the network.

If tested to work with other MacOs versions, this should be a main FAQ listed on Apple's Support website for Aperture and/Mac OSX.

  • 10.6.3 and iPhone tethering over Bluetooth

This issue probably won't be widely reported because there is no iPhone tethering in the US with AT&T, but since upgrading to 10.6.3, I'm finding tethering my 13" MacBook Pro to my iPhone over Bluetooth to be really unreliable. Each time I do it, I basically have to stop and start Bluetooth on my Mac, and sometimes put my phone in to Airplane mode and back to normal again before it will tether.
Any other Canadians or others having this issue?

This forum is for questions from those managing sites on iTunes U, Apple's service for colleges and universities to post educational material in the iTunes Store. You'll be most likely to get help with this issue if you ask in the iPhone forums.
    Regards.

  • Sharing media over Front Row

I have a two MacBook network and I'd like to be able to view media from either computer on the television via Front Row. How do I set up my files to be recognized under the "shared photos", "shared movies", "shared music" tabs? I've read posts of putting aliases in folders, but I'm really confused. Also do I have to AFP (?) to the other computer first? Thank you.

For the video media that you can't import into iTunes try this:
    1. On the Mac that isn't going to be running Front Row, create an alias of the directory where the media is stored - right click the directory and choose Make Alias.
    2. On the same Mac make sure that Personal File Sharing and Remote Login are enabled under the Sharing section of System Preferences. Also make a note of the Mac's computer name (it'll be under the Computer Name text box in the same Sharing System Preferences).
    3. On the Mac that will be running Front Row, you need to access the other Mac. In Finder choose Go/Connect to Server. Type the name you got from step 2 and press Connect. You'll be asked to log on. Once done, your other Mac should appear as a 'drive' in the Finder side bar.
    4. Now, navigate to where you saved the alias in step 1 and drag it to the Movies folder on the Mac that will be playing Front Row.
    5. Start Front Row and you should have access to the media on the other Mac by navigating to the Videos/Movies section.
    That should work.
It might look like a lot, but you only need to do it once. One thing is that you will need to manually reconnect to the other Mac (step 3) if you ever switch it off as you will lose the connection.
Also, remember that Front Row will only play videos that can be opened and played in QuickTime.

  • Bluetooth keyboard crashes front row

    Hello,
I've patched Front Row to work on a G5 in 10.4.11 with "Activate Front Row 0.1". I should say that the same problem I'm about to describe happened in 10.4.10 with another patch program...seems to be the BT keyboard, but not sure.
Front Row will be humming along nicely and then shows the "keyboard lost connection" text with the keyboard icon, then, poof! It just flashes off...no warning or crash panel afterwards or anything, just poof.
    Anyone else have something similar?
    thank you.

I have the same problem but also wanted to use the F13 thru F19 to launch programs and web browsers I use regularly. I called Apple Tech Support since I just got the new keyboard and was told that Leopard does not allow the user to program the function keys. The Tech Support sent me an article (http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n42674/) that says MAC OS 9 allowed the user to program function keys but not OS X.
I seems strange to me that Apple would come out with a great keyboard and have 7 function keys ( 9 counting F5 and F6) that cannot be programmed with a brand new 10.5 operating system. The Tech Support told me to check out third party software but I have not been able to find any third party software that would allow me to program the function keys. I'd be interested in buying the software if anyone knows if it exists.
I hope Apple corrects this problem in future OS updates. Why make a keyboard with function keys that cannot be programmed?

I just bought this Apple remote  from the Apple Store,  the volume works on it but when I press the menu button nothing happens, no front row or anything.

  • How can I use apple remote with Mountain Lion? Any Front Row alternative?

    Hi All,
I recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
All great except for my Apple Remote control.
Before, I could effectively control my iMac media with Apple Remote by using Front Row (music, photos, videos, good integration with iTunes and iPhoto).
Now, as I understand, Front Row is expired.
So, my Apple remote still works but with very limited options (just music, forward, backward and volume), and it's a real pity.
Any of you Guys know how to restore Front Row?
Otherwise maybe suggest an alternative (sth similar, should allow iMac media control by Apple Remote)?
So far I tried to restore all Front Row files by a Time Capsule Snow Leopard backup (as indicatred on some other Communities).
To restore was easy, but then, no way to launch it.
    Any advice will help!
    Thanks in advance/all the best.
    Marco

Thanks Klaus1 for your prompt answer, although I went again through a dated discussion.
I also got the feeling that somehow they want to push Apple TV..
But, respectfully speaking towards our Friends at Apple, is it fair to promise what you don't deliver?
I have choosen apple because I percive it's different.
    At currently published link: http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC377Z/A/apple-remote
    they do promote the following:
    Apple Remote with Mac
The Apple Remote gives you total command of your music, photos, videos and DVDs from anywhere in the room. It works with Front Row - a menu-based, full-screen interface - to make accessing the digital content on your Mac as simple as navigating your iPod. When you press the Menu button, your desktop fades and the sleek, Front Row interface takes its place, to give you control over your music in iTunes, your photos in iPhoto, the videos in your Videos folder and your DVDs. Turn up the volume. Shuffle. Skip to the next chapter on your DVD. Play a slide show, a home video that you made in iMovie, even a film trailer.
Compatible with Apple products introduced in 2005 or later that have a built-in infrared (IR) receiver. Not compatible with MacBook Pro with Retina display.
Cost for this is 15£ (19€).
Now, I have iMac and Mac Book Pro (no retina display) both with Mountain Lion installed, and I understand both of them are not compatible with Front Row.
Actually I adore apple tv and I got 2 at home nicely working on 2 different TVs.
So I accomplished twice their wish of selling this product to me.
Why shall they deceive me (and many others, as I read) by killing a still promised service?
Should I read all forums before buying a trusted-brand-product like apple, to ensure that id does what declared?
Don't get me wrong, I'm an enthusiast user of the whole apple family, since many years, and still I am.
Just politely complaining for this decision, which creates to Many an easy avoidable disservice.
    Cheers
    Marco

  • What is the best older version of iTunes for Front Row?

Can anyone share some opinions please on which older version of itunes I should download that has the least amount of bugs when using "front row" (I currently have 9.0.3 and Mac OS X 10.5.8)? . Also, should I download the regular version or the 64-bit version? What's the difference/advantage between the two?
    Many-many thanks in advance.

I am right up there with iTunes biggest proponents, and try and to recruit anyone who will listen...
I've got about 75 "complete season" Television DVDs, and it was really time consuming to decide which series and episode I wanted to watch by pulling out a box, reading each episode summary that came with the DVD, then take it out of the box, insert it, view it, put it back etc. etc....all for one episode!
Then I heard about adding video files to iTunes and viewing them via Front Row (or iTunes)...couldn't wait to try it. Was totally won over by Front Row's little opening fanfare and the look of the table of contents/episode screen etc. Every feature worked fine.
Since downloading 9.0.3 (from either 9.0 or 9.1) however, I inherited that scrolling issue were it skips and jumps to the last TV Show played or occasionally a random episode, and keeps reverting to that one as well. With my previous version, that scrolling issue appeared, but only several times in about a 3 month daily viewing period then stopped doing that altogether. With that version of iTunes, it seemed to stop after I held the up and down buttons on the remote and let it rapidly scroll up and down (from top to bottom) throughout that particular series. That doesn't work now, and even scrolling up and down/back and fourth, full speed ahead, I can see it semi-pause for a split second on a specific episode. This now became constant problem.
Now a newer problem. I had some misc. TV shows that were catalogued in iTunes as Misc., which front row correctly displayed as such and were properly filed in it's own iTunes folder. I tried to rename that folder, and since then, the iTunes window displays the new name correctly, but Front Row doesn't. I tried dragging that folder to the desktop, creating a new one in the iTunes folder, then dragging those desktop files (sans folder) into the new one and it's still back to square one! I've got about 840 TV shows, with 145 GB of free space remaining.
Again, thanks all for your help.

  • Bluetooth tethering no longer working - iPhone 3GS (iOS4.1) and Macbook Pro

    Hi all,
I don't understand why this is not working anymore. In the past I had successfully paired & used a bluetooth tethered connection between my Macbook Pro (OSX 10.6.4) & my iPhone 3GS (pre 4.1). The network connection was working and I was able to surf the web/use MSN etc. This is not a feature I have used in quite some time and for some reason now it is not working. I have done several upgrades on my phone since I last used it, currently on iOS 4.1.
Lets pretend I am starting from scratch and my Macbook & iPhone do not know each other, devices have been forgotten on both.
    - iPhone & Macbook both are on & discoverable
    - On Macbook Pro I select "Set Up Bluetooth Device"
    - Macbook scans and detects my iPhone, I select "Continue"
    - Macbook connects with iPhone & displays 6 digit pin, also pairing notification is shown on iPhone with the same 6 digit pin
    - I select "Continue" on Macbook & "Pair" on iPhone
    - Connection is made, iPhone is now listed on Macbook and vice versa
    - From bluetooth menu (on Macbook) in the iPhone device menu I select "Connect to Network". Error is displayed on Macbook "The bluetooth network is unavailable. There was a problem connecting to your device..." & on my iPhone an error "Connection Unsuccessful. Make sure iPhone is turned on and in range".
    - When I try to connect from the iPhone an error is displayed "Connection Unsuccessful. iPhone is not supported" with a button to Forget Device.
    What... the ****?
This has worked in the past without a hitch. Has something changed between say iOS 3.x and 4.1 that might cause this to no longer work for me.
    Any protips are greatly appreciated!

Don't feel like a noob, my settings changed after the last update without warning and I was having the same issue as you until I found your post that alerted me to the fact that my internet tethering might be off!
So for others out there that are having this issue to turn tethering on go to Settings > General > Network > Internet Tethering > On
Thank you!! I had already wasted over an hour repeatedly syncing and unsyncing my darn bluetooth connection.

  • Is there any way to change the screen resolution in Front Row?

    Hi all,
I've got a Mac Mini plugged in to my TV, and I want to be able to change the screen resolution depending on the content I'm watching (as some content is in 4:3 aspect ratio, some is in 16:9, and I'd prefer to have the picture filling the screen completely). Unfortunately, the TV doesn't have a "stretch" mode for making an 4:3 picture fit a 16:9 aspect ratio. If I know what I want to watch in advance, I can set the resolution accordingly using system prefs on the mac, but if I'm just sitting back choosing what to watch with the Apple Remote, it's annoying to have to leave front row, walk over to the computer and change resolution once I've decided what to watch, open system prefs, change resolution, re-launch Front Row and find what I wanted to watch again.
So I was wondering if anyone had figured a way to allow the screen resolution to be switched from within the FrontRow UI. I've seen that people have written python based plug-ins such as PyeTV and Understudy that allow different types of content to be added to FrontRow, but I've not found any utility plug-ins such as what I'm looking for on the net (nor could I find SDK documentation on this API in the stuff that comes with XCode).
I guess the other approach might be quick keys: has anyone had any success hooking up quick keys macros alongside front row in response to apple remote events? (seems too few events to be able to choose from, but I've never tried it, so I won't assume!) Or how about is there a way to trigger an AppleScript from within Front Row? And, of course, I'm very open to any other ideas you might have!
Thanks very much in advance for any ideas on this.
    Andy

  • Two problems with Front Row

    Hello.
I have all my music on my iMac and I am streaming it to my Mac Mini connected to my TV and stereo. What I have noticed is that the cover art on my music tracks don't show when I play any of the shared tracks or playlists, just the default picture with the two notes. Is there something I can do that will display it? I have tried to start iTunes and connect the shared library there before starting Front Row but that didn't help.
I also have a problem with listing my pictures in Front Row. I have an external drive connected to my Mini that has all my pictures and movies. I have no trouble playing the movies (I created an alias in the Movies catalog to the Movies catalog on the external drive), but if I create an alias in the Pictures catalog to the Pictures catalog on the external drive the catalog isn't shown in Front Row. Do I have to import all the pictures into iPhoto? I don't use iPhoto at all because I always use the program that came with my Nikon camera that shows all the picture information, such as focal length, what lens I used, white balance setting, etc. (or Adobe Photoshop Elements it I want to make some changes). Is there something I can do to fix this too?
    Thanks,
    Erik Aleksander Moe

Bernd, since your comp is still under warranty you may wish to give the online tech support a try -->HERE<--</a>. Click on the "Chat with a support agent" link.
If you don't want to go that route, then I suggest that you call them over the phone. Hopefully, you have the AppleCare Protection Plan if your 90 day warranty ran out.
    Good Luck.

  • Can I use Front Row on external monitor with MacBook Pro's cover closed?

I've seen that you can use the remote to control Front Row even when the lapatop's cover is closed (on a MacBook Air). Is it possible with a first generation MB Pro? Are there special settings?
    Thx

You can use a MacBook Pro in "clamshell" mode if you have the AC adapter plugged in for power, an external display attached and an external keyboard and mouse (USB or Bluetooth) to wake the computer after it's been closed. This is the official word from Apple:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131
However, even if you don't have a keyboard and mouse, you should still be able to wake the MacBook Pro using the Apple remote by pressing the "menu" button. (You do still need to have the power plugged in and the display plugged in.)
