Front Row: playing media from NAS

Dear Community Members,
I use NAS (WD ShareSpace) and plan to transfer my Movies, Pictures and Music libraries to a share on the NAS.
As far as I understand, Front Row can easily hadle Movies folder because it actually reads folder contents.
Can you share any experience of playing iTunes playlists and iPhoto events stored on a NAS from within Front Row please?

quit itunes and copy your itunes library to the NAS and delete the original. then make an alias to the the new itunes library in the original location in your Music folder. this should work both with itunes and Front Row. but make sure the NAS is mounted at all times when you try to use itunes or Front Row.

  • Why won't Front Row play movies located in my iPhoto Library?

I currently have a little over 300 short movies from my digital cameras. I keep them in subfolders located at /Users/shared/Shared Movies/digital camera movies/ and Front Row plays them just fine under each user account since each user has an alias to /Users/shared/Shared Movies/ located in their "movies" folder within their home folder.
Recently a buddy convinced me to import my short digicam movies into iPhoto as an easier way to organize the short .mov and .avi files. I have over 14K image files in my library so I liked the idea of browsing my video shorts using iPhoto. I created a smart album in iPhoto for all file names ending with .avi or .mov and that works great to quickly locate the relatively few video files in the sea of digital stills.
BUT... WHY won't Front Row locate or play the movies that are located inside of iPhoto's Library? Did they just forget this functionality? Front Row's Video player displays Video Podcasts located in iTunes why wouldn't there also be an automagic category that appears in Front Row for movies located in your iPhoto Library?!
Front Row chokes if I attempt to play the smart "movies" album I created in iPhoto. It just keeps spinning the little "train tracks" progress thingy and never shows a movie. I finally just hit the menu button on the remote to "back out" of that selection.
The other work around I tried to play these movies located in iPhoto was a smart folder located at /Users/shared/Shared Movies/ that displays filenames that contain .mov and .avi located in my iPhoto library folder. This doesn't work. Front Row's Video player will not display the movies found by a smart folder the same way it does for an alias to a folder or file.
I don't want to keep duplicate copies of these movie files on my HD. I'll have to keep them located outside of iPhoto so I can enjoy browsing and watching them "on demand" using Front Row.
What is the fix? Work around?

Thanks for the suggestion but that isn't an option. Think about how iPhoto stores images and movies you import into the photo library. It will import files originally located in one folder and scatter them by storing all the files in hundreds of folders and subfolders based on date. Originally I had my movies in my home movie folder and even used an alias to the shared movies. That all works fine and it isn't the issue. The issue is when you try to use the only tool Apple provides to organize your digital images, both still and moving pictures. Once you import your movies into the iPhoto Library they become invisible to Front Row's video player.
Once iPhoto imports my 300+ files and scatters them into hundreds of subfolders based on the date -how in the world would you even begin to maintain aliases in a folder that point to these files. That is NOT an option, who would do that?! That is why I decided to try the smart folder since it would dynamically locate all the files with .mov and .avi in the file name located within the iPhoto library. Good idea but Front Row will not play these files listed in the result set of a smart folder. It will follow an alias but not play the contents of a smart folder.
Front Row should handle movie files within the iPhoto library the same way it deals with videos within the iTunes library. Poor design, oversight, bug, whatever -it should be fixed. There should be an automatic category that appears under the Front Row video player for "Movies in iPhoto" and if you have no movies in your library it displays something like it does when you have no video podcasts, or no TV shows, or no music videos in iTunes. Come on, how many users have those items vs. an iPhoto library with movies from their digital cameras? I bet more users have movies from their digital cameras that currently drop through a gaping hole in the design of Front Row if they use iPhoto to manage their digicam movie files.

  • MediaPlay to play media from an InputStream

I think there is a compelling use case that needs the MediaPlayer to play media from an InputStream instead of the protocols such as http, file, and jar which are supported by JavaFx right now.
If your JavaFX runs inside your browser and if you generate some audio on the fly and put it in a byte array in your local memory, there is no way you can play it. None of the available workarounds are elegant. If you attempt to save that audio into a file temporarily and intend to play it from the file, you would need to trouble your users with the security permission pop-up. If you create a webserver programmatically on the client machine, you would also need to ask the users for socket permission. If you try to save the audio into the javafx.io.Storage, you cannot access it as a java.io.File object, thus you cannot use the file:/// protocol anymore. Well, you could send the audio to a remote webserver somewhere and read it back through http, that works but it is plainly silly.
Above all, if the InputStream is supported by MediaPlayer, all other three (http, file, jar) would be automatically taken care of because all those three can be converted to an InputStream one way or another,
Also, before an InputStream hits the MediaPlayer, you can process it any way you want. For example, you could place an Ogg Vorbis encoder/decoder along the pipeline between the MediaPlayer and the media source. Then I believe the Ogg Vorbis issue will be resolved automatically.

I think that is not possible indeed. You can handle InputStream as well saving as a file and read that file long after save it. So the Media from MediaPlayer can read a file using source attribute.
But I agree with you. The possibilities to handle InputStream directly is more interesting, you can read from a internal file added in jar, can read from a Socket connection without the necessity to save to a file. You can read directly from a database record, so, that resource is more flexible
I think JavaFX media support aim is focused to read local resources unfortunately.

  • Front Row plays audio but not video of MP4 H264 AAC files

    SL 10.6.6
    Here's the problem:
Take an MP4 movie file encoded with H264 and AAC thats plays with no problems in QT, iTunes, Front Row
Open this file in QT7Pro, add a mask using a GIF file then export as MP4 using video and audio pass through to avoid re-encoding
The new video file plays OK in QT and iTunes but only plays the audio track in Front Row - the video is just presented as a blank screen
This happens to every file i've tried it with.
I've tried trashing all front row caches/prefs/app support folders, installing/uninstalling/re-installing perian. i've tried changing the file extension to .mov .m4v .3gp - still the same problem the file plays perfectly except in Front Row
All the posts I can find on this topic seem to refer to subtitles causing a problem - these files have no subtitle track
    Any suggestions?

I have faced the same problem exactly. Some seasons and one movie I have detected so far, do not show any video at all. If I open the same files in iTunes, they show ok. If I open the same files in QuickTime thought no video also. I guess it has something to do with QuickTime then. Try it yourselves in order to see if it is the same problms with you guys. If that is the case I will try to extract an older version of QuickTime from the installation package via Pacifist and see if that works.
Even if it doesn't work I am pretty sure they will come up with a new update fixing this, but the point is that Apple isn't used in making bugged updates, up until recent. What is wrong with them lately?
Anyway, as soon as I have news in the afternoon I will let you know

  • Front row plays dvd video but no sound

I tried several dvds in front row and I can't get any sound from them. I can play avi type movies, music and on but I get no sound from dvd's. I can play them on dvd player and get sound but not front row. been running into alot of quirks since the leopard upgrade. hope they patch it soon.

try to isolate the issue to front row by playing it in dvd player. you may get an error message saying that dvd player cannot run because it is being used by another program in which case you have to go to applications/utilities/activity monitor.app find the front row process and control-click quit process or highlight click quit in the upper left hand corner of activity monitor then select quit. run the dvd in dvd player.app and see if it repeats the problem. if not then most likely it's a front row issue. if it happens again try another dvd player software. if you find that it happens on both dvd player.app and front row but not a third then it would most likely be be a dvd player.app issue in which you locate the plist file in library/preferences/ quit out both front row and dvd player.app to ensure it doesn't recreate a duplicate plist file then move the original to trash then open dvd player.app and try again. if all of this fails and it seems hopeless before going to a fresh install or archive and install I recommend update install. I have used this to fix what seemed to be broken and incurable apps on several macs now with success. but try the other stuff first to save you some time if possible. as of now all of my apps other than those non-compatible with Leopard are functioning just fine with the occasional bump in the road. Fixes are necessary as there are quite a few needed but I ran into the same thing with Tiger when it first came out and Tiger was a great OS.

  • Possible to use both Front Row AND Media Central with same Apple Remote?

    Dear Fellow Mac Users,
I have just got a copy of Media Central as i want to use it to view movie files with due to its great codec support. however due to its slightly sluggish and cumbersome design i'd like to continue to use front row for my itunes and dvd needs. whatsmore i'd like to be able to command both programs when i want them using my apple remote. is this possible?
    Tim

Yes. I do this right now - mainly using Media Central, and switching to Front Row if I have .mkv files to watch.
What I do is since you hit "Menu" to load Front Row, I just went into MediaCentral's preferences and had "Play" launch MediaCentral. Once you are in one, it 'grabs' the remote commands, so you shouldn't have to worry about it loading the other program.

  • Which movies will front row play.

My itunes library is on an external disc, however some large movies are put into my itunes libraries as QT reference files to movies held on another external HD. This all works very well in itunes, although sometimes there is a slight delay while itunes searches for the files or the other external HD wakes up.
Front row won't play these reference files, or it won't for me and seems to cause some issues when I try.
Is this something I should expect or can I fix it.
If this is to be expected, is it because the files are on another external HD (although all my itunes files are on an ext HD anyway) or is it because the files they are referenced to are not mp4's (think they are .dv or .mov)

They simply don't play and when I press menu or escape I get a message saying that itunes has quit or had problems. I rather suspect any problems I'm having are down to sharing with front row 1.2.2. it seems I get differing results every-time I try to share some video. Actually 1.2.2 seems very dodgy at sharing.
The .mov and .dv are on a desktop G5 (no front row) so I am unable to test them directly without sharing or copying to anther mac. But I have never had one play yet with sharing. I have had mp4's not play sometimes and then play the next time I try, so I'm tending to believe it's a sharing issue, especially when I play the mp4's from the same mac (no sharing) they work every-time.
I suppose the next thing to do is to copy one of the .mov's to a mac with front row, but they're all so big, anyhow I'll give it a go.

  • Why wouldn't Front Row play the entire VDO clip?

Hi folks, need help with Front Row. Why wouldn't it play some of the clips in full length? For example, FR row would only play 1:30 min of a 10:00 mins clip but when i play the exact same file via VLC it would play the whole 10 mins. Strange thing is that Front Row would play an entire clip of an episode of ******* that is over 40 mins long but why not a 10 mins clip? All files are .mpg's. Help.

  • Front Row playing shared TV video and using Fast-Forward question

I'm playing a shared TV video on my Black MacBook from my iTunes running on my PowerMac G5 across my home ethernet 10/100/1000 network. The TV video plays just fine and I can pause it using the Remote just fine. However, according to the documentation for the Remote while using Front Row in this manner, the Remote's Fast-forward is supposed to fast-forward the video if it's pressed and held down. It does not do this! It simply shows the progress bar for the video with played time on left and remaining time on right. I held the button down for at least 30 secs but to no avail. I let up on the button and press and held down for another 30 secs or so but it still would not fast-forward as the documention says it should.
My MacBook is updated with all the latest Apple software downloads for MacBook.
Have others experienced this problem, and if so is there a soln to this at this time or does one simply wait for Apple to fix it.
I will be sending feedback to Apple on this issue.
Thanks for any insights in advance.

    Update...
I left Front Row paused on a shared TV Video all night. In morning time screen was black and I could not resume playback.
I backed out all the way to Desktop and restarted Front Row and selected same shared TV Video - and this time the fast-forward button worked as documented. Go figure this one
However, when I tried several Shared TV Videos I only got audio in some cases and when I did get a video feed it was not moving yet audio kept rolling along. I had to back off to the Desktop several times and restart Front Row to get things working correctly. If you enecounter this just do what I did here and you'll get things going - just don't give up on it, is my advice. :-))
This raised another issue - It appears that pause/play Remote button will not work (at least for me) after extended pause time (like for 8 hrs).
Apple has some fine tuning to do on this Front Row feature - although I will add they've done a pretty darn good job with its initial release IMO.

  • Will Front Row play VOB files?

    Good afternoon.
I have several movies in DVD format and am wondering if front row will play these? If not, does anyone know if Media Central will play them?
    Thanks.

Front Row will only play what Quicktime can play, so it will not play DVDs stored locally.
According to here, Media Central will play DVDs stored on your HD.
VLC will also play VOB files.

  • How do I play media from a cloud storage drive on mac?

I have all my media stored on MEGA, cloud drive (https://mega.co.nz) I would like to play it on a media player? (like XBMC)?
please a step by step answer, Can I play the media from the cloud drive or do I need to download it off the cloud first? is the cloud drive only for storage? you would think I should be able to play my media from the cloud drive (THANK YOU)

I use OneDrive and Amazon Cloud services and they vary but are able - with Amazon it downloads a copy to local device it seems before playing - or queues enough to avoid stuttering.
What happens when you try though that you asked first, or tried and failed.
