Front Row really slow browsing movies

I just upgraded my RAM to 4GB and my HDD to 500GB 7200RPM Seagate (clone made with Disk Utility) and noticed something that never happened before. While browsing movies in Front Row it becomes unresponsive for 10 to 30 secs. This does NOT happen with music, podcasts, photos or everything else in front row where everything is working great.I've always been using front row with no problems at all and have been really satisfied.
What is happening?I tried with iTunes turned on and off but makes no difference. Also running Leopard, did not upgrade to Snow yet. It's really annoying cause Front Row is really cool and I use it all the time.
Thanks in advance.

I've also noticed that after exiting Front Row the program actually continues to run in the background.Using Activity Monitor I can see it using 1GB virtual ram.I don't know whta that means or if it 's normal.
Thanks

  • How to tell Front Row to look for movies on a USB drive?

I'm working on getting all my dvd's on two 500gb usb drives - using Handbrake to encode everything. This is much faster with a new 2.4ghz 24" iMac by the way (6-8hrs on my 1.8ghz athlon vs 1-2 with the iMac...woohoo).
What I'm trying to do is get the movies (on the usb drives) to show up in Front Row. One way I know of is by making an alias for each movie and moving the alias to my "Movies" folder on the main HD. This is a little tedious. When I simply drag and drop it in the "Movies" folder it just copies it and that is not what I want. Is there a way to just tell Front Row where to look for the movies? If I use iTunes the same thing happens, it just transfers all movies to the main HD...nevermind. I unchecked the box that said to copy everything.
The plan was on using iTunes for movies I encode specifically for iPods exclusively, searching through 600+ movies to get a few for the iPod doesn't seem user friendly.
So the question remains. Is there another way to get Front Row to just see the movies on another drive without iTunes or using an alias for each one or are those 2 my only choices?

I'm glad you got it figured out. Front Row actually looks for movie files in two places. First, as you've discovered, it looks inside your user's "Movies" folder. An alias there pointing to a different location will lead Front Row to the other location. Also, Front Row looks inside iTunes for movies. This way, it can find TV shows, music videos and movies purchased from the iTunes Music Store. Another option, besides making an alias in your "Movies" folder, would be to add the movies to iTunes.

  • Front Row Sloooooooow to play Movie Trailers....

When I go to view trailers in iTunes or even from Apple's website I don't have any problems with them starting quickly and playing through.
However, in Front Row - the movie posters sometimes take upwards to a minute to load and then many trailers will say "loading trailer" for several minutes before finally playing. Once they're going I occasionally get some stuttering as well.
I've upgraded to Quicktime 7.1 which didn't seem to help.
Any ideas or others experiencing similar problems?
    iMac - 17" - 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo - 1Gb DDR2 SDRAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Downloading the movie posters will be a little slow.
The stuttering should not be happening however.
Make sure that QT is setup with your specific internet type (dialup, dsl, t1, t2, etc.)
    1. Open system prefs.
    2. Click QuickTime
    3. Click streaming
    4. Where it says "Streaming Speed:", select your internet type
Try to watch a trailer again, if it still is happening, this might be a problem with the Server which the Apple Trailers is on, since it can get bogged down with requests.
    Hope this helps,
    Cory

  • Front row is slow, no previews | iphoto

i'm really disappointed by front row's speed when it comes to organising > 1500 photos (ext. fw hdd). it's SOOOOOOOOOOOO slow, because everytime i enter the photo arena or a photo album in front row it seems to scan and/or read in the whole iphoto library. iphoto itself doesn't have any problems when accessing my pics. i've rebuilt the whole indices with no success at all.
furthermore no preview images show up in frontrow. just when i check "import images in iPhoto lib", preview images are shown in frontrow.
    anybody similar problems?
    any hints?
    thanks!
    jo

i'm using a mac mini dual core with 1 gb of ram.
i've tried it (lib internal, pics external) without successs. FR still indexes/reads in every album, when i'm accessing the photo department. as i said: iphoto itself doesn't have any problems, nor this slowness. maybe i should give it a try and reimport everything and/or movev all the pics to the internal hdd. but actually this is what i don't want: i just want to have my library and my pics on the external hdd...
why does iphoto/frontrow have such stupid limitations?
    thanks for ur help!

  • Front Row freezing in the movies menu

Hi, I got my new Macbook last week, last weekend I ran all the updates, including FR, and everything seemed to work fine. Last night trying was the first time I went into the "Shared" video folder in the FR menu, and after that while trying to exit FR froze up. It keeps doing the same thing, and it only happens in the Movies menu. Sometimes I'm able to exit after 20-30 seconds, sometimes I have to shut down the computer.
Is there any way to reset/reinstall FR just to get rid of the problem? Thanks!
I'm an ex-windows user, new to Mac, still trying to get used to it

i have the same problem on my new notebook (a mac book pro intel). I observed that it freezes everytime i'm not connected to the Web and i haven't turned off airport...
is it possible front row tries to download some information by internet, it doesn't recognize connection is not active and given that mac is not connected the research freeze the application ('till a timeout message is sent back..after looong time...)?
everytime the solution for me it was to wait long time (really long) or to turn off computer...

  • Front Row TV Shows in Movie folder!!??

Why are my TV shows showing up in my Movies folder when I use Front row, they are in the TV show Folder when i am in iTunes??
This started with the last itunes update, never had the problem before.
    Thanks, Mark

    *As fireflip suggested*,
+For 10.5.8 and iTunes 9 at least, select the show(s) and change the media kind to "Podcast" by getting info then going to "Options". Quit iTunes and restart then change media kind back to TV Show and restart again. They will now show up correctly in Front Row...+
    joemaurice wrote:
I just did this and now i cannot change them back to TV shows, it will not process them. I can change them to Music and then back to Podcast but not back to TV shows or Movies.
Would approach this tip with caution
Everything fireflip suggested is correct Except that *+each file must be changed indivdually+*, no batch-editing here. I tried that and had to trash them all, then re-import them from my external HD. Also, I don't remember if I needed to close iTunes and reopen it before changing back to TV shows (I think all I had to do is close out the info dialog box, then reopen it to change back to TV). You may want to try it both ways.

  • Front Row Locking up with Movies

So far computer is behaving well, although I have found that Front Row will lock up if I try and view movies or podcasts, however movie trailers work fine.
I can force quit but after that Front Row won't launch any more until I restart. This seems repetable with same results. Viewing pictures from iphoto works fine.
Is anyone else having this problem. How else can I launch front row other than the remote. I don't see an app called Front Row. I want to see if issue is with remotes functionality or with Front Row.
Oh, also how about DVD playback? I have not run search on this yet but someone else with new imac had one DVD play fine and another one lock up.

Just to follow up on my own post...
Running the sample command on the unresponsive Front Row.app showed it was trying to resolve a font.
I had disabled the Hoefler Text font using Font Book, in an attempt to get iWeb to render blog pages as HTML instead of as images. After re-enabling Hoefler Text I re-launched Front Row, and it did not lock up.
I'll post a follow-up if the lockup recurs.

  • Front Row won't play movie trailers and previews

When I try to access the apple movie/Tv trailers through front row I get the message:
"the selected video could not be played. The format was not recognized"
Front Row and iTunes are both updated to the latest version-
My Firewall's set to allow all incoming connections-
The trailers work fine in iTunes
Any ideas what could be causing this and what I can do about it?

I am also experiencing this problem. When I select the Trailer I want to watch, it gives my the same error. Both iTunes and Front Row are updated to the latest version. If it helps, I recently did a complete re-install of my system. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help us here!

  • Front Row lists Podcasts in Movies?

For some reason my Front Row is listing some of my podcasts (early Diggnation and AOTS) in the movies directory. I only have like 5 .mov files (random clips from the net) in that folder and it's anoying that there is all those extra podcasts in that section?
    Any help?

Are these podcasts that you signed up for via iTunes?
    Are they all old podcasts?
Front Row looks for certain meta-data tagged with videos from iTunes. It sounds like these may have been mis-tagged (or early versions) and aren't being recognized by Front Row as podcasts. Unfortunately at the moment none of that meta-data is user changeable so you won't be able to fix where these show up.
Can you re-download them? Maybe re-aquireing these podcasts will properly tag them

  • Front Row - Some Quicktime made movies = Black Screen

I have a problem with the new front row.
The problem is, that in the new front row, some music videos will not show, the title picture shows but only plays audio and the screen is black. It worked on the old front row perfectly. It plays in quicktime, well quicktime created the movie so it should play its own quicktime movies. It also plays in iTunes which I imported it into the iTunes area.

I am using MacOsX 10.5.1, Front Row 2.0, 20" Intel Core Duo 2.0 GHz.
    Any help will be appreciated.

    I add some infos:
I saw that when the track are correctly named with the language (ie: italiano, english, etc etc) fronw row can menage the correct track, while there are troubles when the names of audio are track1, track2...
Is there a software that can be use to rename existing audio tracks in a avi file?

  • Front Row Quits after entering 'Movies' Folder

I have just erased my harddrive and reinstalled OSX on my 18" iMac (1.8ghz, 512ram). Had some problems with the main applications which i rectified by using the bundled software cd and uninstalling programmes such as iphoto and reinstalling them.
Front row on the other hand, quits after i enter my movies file. All other aspects of front row seem to work fine though. I would uninstall and reinstall front row, however, as i understand it, it's not actually an appllication, and so cannot be uninstalled. Can anybody help me rectify this issue?
    Thankyou.

Your profile indicates Mac OS X 10.4.8, is there a reason you haven't updated to the current version of Mac OS X which is now 10.4.10? Is your QuickTime up-to-date with version 7.2? Is your Front Row up-to-date with version 1.3.1? Is your iTunes up-to-date with version 7.4.2? Each of those updates have recently fixed various issues that have come up with one module of Front Row or another. Did you use the Perian plug-in or Flip4Mac with QuickTime before? You'll need to re-install those QuickTime plug-ins as well.

  • Front Row: Where is Resume Movie Playback?

Playing a divx movie in Front Row 2.0 on my Mac Mini. Hit Menu to exit and then came back in and noticed that there was no Resume or Start From Beginning option. The movie began to right from the beginning.
Is anyone else having this issue? If so, can it be fixed to enable this option, like switching something from False to True in the code of Front Row? Or do we have to wait for Apple to add this option which should have been included from the very beginning.

The reason that it still works with itunes purchased stuff is there is an option on the file for resume. When you do it through itunes it will make that option available. If you have your own content that you put in the movie folder it will not give you that option. In the old front row it always resumed no matter where the file was, even if it was not in itunes.

  • ITunes Rental Movies Do Not Play in Front Row on Computer

Surely I cannot be the only person who would like to watch a rented iTunes movie on my computer using Front Row?
My iTunes library is on an external drive and when I open and browse Front Row, everything BUT the rented movies appear in my movie list. Purchased movies are there, video podcasts are there, home movies are there, just not the rented ones. Why is that?
I don't have an Apple TV, just a laptop an external drive and a desire to watch rented movies through an application designed to play ALL my media, not just select media.
And I haven't seen any info on Apple's website to indicate that rentals would not work with Front Row. And I do have all the latest Apple software updates.

Front Row in Mac OS X 10.5.x (Leopard) has access to your iTunes and iPhoto libraries without launching those applications. You're right, rented moves don't appear in Front Row and there have been a couple of Front Row updates since rented moves became available. The only thing I can think of is that the rental terms can't be enforced when the movie is played in Front Row instead of iTunes. For example, Front Row's access to your iTunes library is really read-only. You can't delete files, apply ratings or change any other settings on the files in your library through Front Row. I think the way iTunes handles rental movies, the file has to be updated with some kind of tag when you start to play it so iTunes knows how much longer you have to finish playing it. So, it's doubtful Front Row will be able to do this. I don't think Apple has ever made a statement one way or the other about this, it's just my opinion.

  • Why won't Front Row play movies located in my iPhoto Library?

I currently have a little over 300 short movies from my digital cameras. I keep them in subfolders located at /Users/shared/Shared Movies/digital camera movies/ and Front Row plays them just fine under each user account since each user has an alias to /Users/shared/Shared Movies/ located in their "movies" folder within their home folder.
Recently a buddy convinced me to import my short digicam movies into iPhoto as an easier way to organize the short .mov and .avi files. I have over 14K image files in my library so I liked the idea of browsing my video shorts using iPhoto. I created a smart album in iPhoto for all file names ending with .avi or .mov and that works great to quickly locate the relatively few video files in the sea of digital stills.
BUT... WHY won't Front Row locate or play the movies that are located inside of iPhoto's Library? Did they just forget this functionality? Front Row's Video player displays Video Podcasts located in iTunes why wouldn't there also be an automagic category that appears in Front Row for movies located in your iPhoto Library?!
Front Row chokes if I attempt to play the smart "movies" album I created in iPhoto. It just keeps spinning the little "train tracks" progress thingy and never shows a movie. I finally just hit the menu button on the remote to "back out" of that selection.
The other work around I tried to play these movies located in iPhoto was a smart folder located at /Users/shared/Shared Movies/ that displays filenames that contain .mov and .avi located in my iPhoto library folder. This doesn't work. Front Row's Video player will not display the movies found by a smart folder the same way it does for an alias to a folder or file.
I don't want to keep duplicate copies of these movie files on my HD. I'll have to keep them located outside of iPhoto so I can enjoy browsing and watching them "on demand" using Front Row.
What is the fix? Work around?

Thanks for the suggestion but that isn't an option. Think about how iPhoto stores images and movies you import into the photo library. It will import files originally located in one folder and scatter them by storing all the files in hundreds of folders and subfolders based on date. Originally I had my movies in my home movie folder and even used an alias to the shared movies. That all works fine and it isn't the issue. The issue is when you try to use the only tool Apple provides to organize your digital images, both still and moving pictures. Once you import your movies into the iPhoto Library they become invisible to Front Row's video player.
Once iPhoto imports my 300+ files and scatters them into hundreds of subfolders based on the date -how in the world would you even begin to maintain aliases in a folder that point to these files. That is NOT an option, who would do that?! That is why I decided to try the smart folder since it would dynamically locate all the files with .mov and .avi in the file name located within the iPhoto library. Good idea but Front Row will not play these files listed in the result set of a smart folder. It will follow an alias but not play the contents of a smart folder.
Front Row should handle movie files within the iPhoto library the same way it deals with videos within the iTunes library. Poor design, oversight, bug, whatever -it should be fixed. There should be an automatic category that appears under the Front Row video player for "Movies in iPhoto" and if you have no movies in your library it displays something like it does when you have no video podcasts, or no TV shows, or no music videos in iTunes. Come on, how many users have those items vs. an iPhoto library with movies from their digital cameras? I bet more users have movies from their digital cameras that currently drop through a gaping hole in the design of Front Row if they use iPhoto to manage their digicam movie files.

  • Front Row on Snow Leopard has audio out of sync on movies and TV shows and some movies wont show images.

I have an iMac Core Duo 2GHz (yes, first Intel iMac). I have Snow Leopard v10.6.8 (latest/last MacOS version I could load) with the most recent Security Update (2013-003).
I have two issues with Front Row:
    • Some of the movie files will not show the images, but I can hear the audio.
    • On other movies and TV shows they start fine, but within a few minutes the audio is out of sync with the images, running about 3-5 seconds ahead... Looks like a bad dub of a Japanese movie from the 60s.
Now, I know it's related to Front Row, because when I jump over to iTunes and start the same movie or TV show it begins where I left off in Front Row, but images are fine and audio is suddenly in-sync.
However, with Snow Leopard being 2 major upgrades back - 3 if you count the upcoming Mavericks release - I doubt this registers as a "brouhaha" on Apple's radar screens. Then, again, maybe the spirit of Steve won't tolerate this Microsoft-like quirk, even if my iMac is still chugging along after 7 years and multiple MacOS X upgrades & updates...

I think I found my answer... or culprit. It has to do with Snow Leopard, and my iMac Core Duo, being the last of the dying breed of 32-bit systems, and that iTunes v11.x is 64-bit (heavily, at least)...
Guess I need to break down and replace my 7 year old iMac, even though it still works beautifully (otherwise).
