Front Row Selects Wrong iPhoto Album

I have been using Folders in iPhoto to group related photo albums.
Front Row gets confused when photo albums beneath sub-folders have the same name. Front Row shows the correct preview picture, but playing the slideshow always plays the first album with the common name.
Here is an illustration of the folders, sub-folders, and albums. If I select Alaska/Jim/Digital, the Front Row preview is correct. But when I play it, I see Alaska/Annette/Digital. The only fix is to uniquely name the other albums.
Alaska (folder)
|
+ Annette (sub-folder)
+-- Digital (album)
|
+ Jim (sub-folder)
+-- Digital (album)
|
+ John (sub-folder)
+-- Digital (album)

Hi, I noticed this problem with my MacBook, too. (Of course that's something purely software related, nothing hardware specific.)
I called the Apple support hotline today regarding this issue. The guy on the phone said he couldn't find any reports about such a problem and made a note of it, probably it would be fixed for the next version of Front Row ...
There's an older, similar post at the MacBook Pro category: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1816746&
To answer the open question there: Yes, of course the ID3 tags are correct. If I transfer the music to my iPod, it plays it in the correct order, of course. And iTunes plays it correct, too, assumed i set the right sorting order.

  • Front Row Doesn't Display Album Artist?

    Hi
One thing I have just noticed about Front Row is that it does not seem to make use of the Album Artist field from iTunes. In my library I have featured artists included in the Artist field, with the main artist displayed in the Album Artist field. For example, the song Smooth by Santana would have the Artist as Santana Ft. Rob Thomas, with the Album Artist as Santana.
This is all fine in iTunes - but in Front Row, when browsing by album, it displays such an album as by Various rather than whoever the album artist is. This seems particularly odd, considering in Cover Flow in iTunes, and even on the iPhone, the Album Artist field is used in correctly.
Is this just me with this problem? Or is it something that Apple are aware of and hopefully will correct? Surely it can't be that big a fix...

    Hello there,
this maybe not will answer your question, but it explains issues with missing artwork in front row i've experienced.
2 albums of my collection refused to display their artwork in front row (these artworks were displaying perfectly fine in itunes, coverflow, finder songs icons and ipods off course).
After trying different things like deleting & replacing artwork, changing size of picture, and so on, nothing changed so i felt really disappointed...
until....I remembered that i have created an itunes music store "wishing list", with 2 songs of these 2 albums. After deleting these 2 songs from the wishing list, everything is back to normal, and front row display correctly the artwork..
thank you for reading, and hope it will help some of you guys.

  • Front row error with IPhoto 6

When i'm using front row, and finish watching a slide show that I made with IPhoto, then select Library to see the slidshow of all my photos, it causes an error. It says "IPhoto is not responding. Press the play/pause button to return to the desktop". And when i return to the desktop, IPhoto opens, and the Library is selected under source on the left, but on the right it's trying to show a slideshow, but the image preview is black, and there are no thumbnails of the photos in the slideshow up top. So i click on Last Roll, or another album, but it is still showing the same black preview with no thumbnails. But when i click on the slideshow I last played, the preview loads, and all of the thumbnails are back, and basically it goes back to normal.
I provided all the details i could, if you need more info, just ask. This is the first problem i've had with my macbook, im still so glad i bought it.

Try deleting the Front Row preference file, com.apple.frontrow.plist.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • While playing, Front Row does not display album art but a white image only

When I go through my music library via Front Row, the album art is still visible, however, as soon as I play a track, the cover disappears and there's a white square instead that, as usual, changes its position from the left to the right side. Could that be due to size limitations? My album art is 2400 x 2400, approximately 4 MB each. Thanks.

Same for me on my Mac Mini: I can see the shared pictures but can't see the ones in the local library. Funny thing is that I can see that library from my other Mac.
Also I noticed that one picture appeared in the middle of the (empty) slideshow, only 1 of 67. In the list view, those pictures appear normally, as you can see in this screenshot http://d.pr/eiXB
    I'm a first-time iLife user, so I don't know if the issue is '11-specific.

  • Front Row not displaying all Album Art

Hi, I recently bought a Macbook Pro and imported all the music I had to it. I started downloading all the album arts for all my albums, and finally placed them all in order. They look perfect in iTunes in Coverflow.
Then, when I started Front Row, I noticed that not all of my songs displayed an Album Art, only some of them. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

  • Selectively import iPhoto albums (and keep them in their current location)?

    I'm new to Aperture.
I have about 60,000 photos in iPhoto. I would like to import my iPhoto collection in year-by-year albums to break up this collection to more manageable pieces. I've made smart albums in iPhoto for each year.
From Aperture I would like to import these albums while keeping the photos in the iPhoto library.
I assume I would click the 'import' icon (top left), then navigate to my iPhoto library in the bottom pane, select the album from iPhoto, choose 'Store files: In their current location' and go.
Problem: my iPhoto library does not appear in the file browser from the import window.
Am I doing something wrong here? How would I accomplish this? Is there a different/better way to achieve this?

I had the same idea as you about a year or more ago. The problem with importing iPhoto images into Aperture by reference is that when iPhoto gets updated and its library layout changes (happens every major iPhoto update), Aperture has trouble finding the images. When you try to relocate masters, you cannot peek into the iPhoto library package to reconnect them so you're screwed.
I have changed my strategy. I now keep all images in Aperture and only copy images into iPhoto when I need some iPhoto feature such as calendars or greeting cards.

  • Selecting which Albums in Appear in  Front Row

    Hello All,
I like the idea that iPhoto albums appear in Front Row. However, as my list of albums grow, this could get hard to use. Is there any way to select which iPhoto albums appear in Front Row?
    Thanks in advance
    Kantron

Not that I know of. FR shows galleries, keepsakes, albums and slideshows. After the last import the albums are listed in the order that they are in the Albums section. Put those you want least at the bottom of that list. The same goes for galleries, keepsakes and slideshows.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Front Row combining iPhoto albums when it shouldn't

So my iPhoto library is organised with plenty of albums, smart albums and folder trees.
I have a folder tree for pictures of my art and another for pictures of other people's art.
When I have iPhoto display a slideshow there's no problems (so far). Yet when I have Front Row display the 'Lego' album in my friend Lucy's art folder, it displays every image in every album titled 'Lego', regardless of which folder tree those albums live in.
I believe I have Front Row 1.3.1; I'm running Tiger and haven't declined any updates. I've tried repairing permissions to no avail.

Yet when I have Front Row display the 'Lego' album in my friend Lucy's art folder, it displays every image in every album titled 'Lego', regardless of which folder tree those albums live in.
Is the "Lego" album in Lucy's folder a "smart" album? If so, I would be curious to know what happens if you change the rules for that folder, run Front Row to test and then change the rules back. It sounds like a smart albums that isn't following the settings correctly.

  • Front Row & iPhoto slide shows

I love the new slide show options in iphoto 09, but apart from the song choice, the slideshow options do not transfer through to Front Row like they used to as far as I can see. It now just plays the pictures full screen one after the other with no transitions at all.
Any help on this would be appreciated.

IWelcome to the Apple Discussions. 'm able to get the music and saved settings to play thru Front Row if I select an album which I've set up. When you first select Photos in Front Row it's the albums that are displayed in the list. If you select photos a second time then it's the Events.
Setting up a slideshow in an album and saving the settings gets transferred to Front Row, at least on my G5. Events don't fare so well, even if the settings are saved.
Give albums a try and see if it will work for you.

  • Front Row has an error finding iPhoto library

I recently transferred files from my old iMac to my new one. It runs Leopard and everything works on FR except Photos. I updated everything when got the new computer. iPhoto works fine and the iPhoto library is where it should be. When I choose photos on fR it states that "An error has occurred" What gives and please help.
    Thank you

Read the instructions and found the AlbumData.xml file, but couldn't get my browser to tell me where the error was (step 2)
    "The solution…
    1.Close iPhoto…
2.Locate where in the AlbumData.xml file the invalid data is (the error [in your web browser] should report at what line the invalid XML is
    3.Open the AlbumData.xml file with an application like TextWrangler and go to the specific line with the error - in my case the problem was with one of my keywords (i.e. “List of Keywords”);
    4.Open iPhoto and highlighting the offending data - re-enter it thereby replacing the invalid data;
    Close iPhoto
    5.Delete AlbumData.xml
6.Re launch iPhoto - make a change (e.g. create a new folder or album) [this last step forces iPhoto to republish the AlbumData.xml file]
    NB
    the error could have been, I assume, in any part of the file not just the keywords;
you can’t edit the AlbumData.xml file directly since iPhoto never reads the file - only writes to it, so any changes will be overwritten.
A word about the AlbumData.xml file
iPhoto generates the AlbumData.xml file (inside its library folder). This file is only used by other applications, such as Front Row and Aperture (iPhoto never reads this file), so that they can locate photos and albums in the photo library. In other words the file is not used by iPhoto rather it is created by iPhoto to aid integration.
The fact that there are cases where iPhoto will write out malformed XML to the AlbumData.xml file, causing other applications to be unable to read the file correctly seems perverse - iPhoto should never be allowed to do this."

  • IPhoto Album pictures differ in Screen Saver selection

When selecting an iPhoto Album as a Screen Saver, the Preview picture pane often displays pictures in other albums. Also, in certain albums, only one picture in that album displays continuously.
I hope this problem is fixable.
    Thanks for your help!

Hello Albert & Welcome to Discussions,
Very simple fix. Go to SystemPreferences>Desktop & ScreenSavers.
Once there click Screen Savers and uncheck, Use random screen saver.
Now click "Choose a folder" and select the folder you want to use for your screen saver. Now, click Options and make any changes you want.
Now, after all that is done go back to Desktop and make sure you choose the same folder you're using for screen saver and let it create the photos. Then,
click on any image and a pull down menu will appear that allows you to make changes to the way the pictures appear on the desk top...ie Full Screen, tile and so on.
    Hope this helps.

  • Using iPhoto in Front Row without sharing

I know I could use iPhoto directly but is there any way to use iPhoto in Front Row without having to set up the share option in iPhoto?
    Thanks

Is iPhoto up-to-date? There were updates to Front Row in Mac OS X 10.4.x and both applications may need to be up-to-date. It's been a little while since I used Front Row in Tiger. iPhoto can be updated to version 6.0.6. There is also a Front Row update to version 1.3.1 that is specifically for iPhoto integration.

  • Front Row shuts down unexpectedly when I'm look through my movie selections

I'm on a 15" MBP and I keep all of my movie files on an external USB 2.0 drive. I put an alias to the part of the external drive that has my videos in the "My Movies" section on my MBP so that front row would be able "see" the movies on my external drive. I have never had a problem with it. Now when I open up front row, select movies, go to my eternal drives alias and choose the folder that has my movies, front row pulls up the list of movies available. But it takes a long time for it to move to the next movie on the list and will always quit when I get around 4-5 movies down the list. Any ideas? I have around 60 movies in that folder, is that too many? Am I over loading front row? Any help anyone could give would be much appriciated! Thanks You!
    MacBook Pro 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

This kind of ***** and is time consuming if you have a lot of movies, but it works. Make a seperate folder for every movie that you have and then put the movie in that folder. Front Row will glide through the folder names allowing you to pick the proper title quickly. It only seem to jam up when there are a lot of movie files in one folder. Hope this helps.

  • IPhoto album "not found" / Communication error...

Having a really weird problem with Front Row... it likes everything but iPhoto! It pulls my iTunes across my network with no problem, it plays movies, trailer and video clips locally and across the network with no problems, but when it comes to iPhoto, it throws a snit.
Seriously, when I select the "Photos" section, it sees the shared iPhoto library across my network, so it tries to go load it. About three seconds after it starts trying to pull the shared library across, it throws up an error: "The album you selected could not be found," then it suggests that there was either a communications error or that the server went offline, although neither is true. Note that it never gets to the point where I can choose an album - it doesn't show any albums, only the error message.
    Has anyone else seen this?
First, it should be noted that the Front Row computer is attached to a projector that can only display up to 800x600. iPhoto on this computer launches, but first throws up an error that the display is not optimal for that application. The machine is otherwise quite strong: Mini dual-core, 1GB RAM, 45+GB free HD.
Here's what I've done in the meantime...
    1) Reinstalled iPhoto 6 from the beginning. Tested - no dice. Applied 6.0.1 and 6.0.2. No dice.
    2) Repaired perms on the server. No dice.
    3) Checked iPhoto on the Front Row machine - it does see the shared library and has no problem bringing the library across.
    4) Changed libraries - I use three different libraries regularly - no dice. #3, above, recognized each library just fine, incidentally.
    5) Created a generic user account on the iPhoto "server," ran iPhoto (which creates a new, blank library), put four pictures in it. iPhoto on the Front Row mac saw the new library with no problem. Front Row, however, gaves the same error.
    6) Rebooted everything (of course). No luck.
    7) I've "googled" the error messages, with no applicable results.
    8) I've put aliases to the libraries in the Front Row machine's user account's "Pictures" folder. The Front Row machine's iPhoto didn't like it, nor did Front Row. Oh well... besides, this would be a workaround - not what I want.
    9) The iPhoto "server" has a pretty straightforward name with no spaces or odd characters. The "share name" assigned in iPhoto has no odd characters or spaces. The Front Row machine, too, has a straightforward, short alphanumeric name.
    10) Networking between the two is a reliable gigabit connection through a five-port gigabit switch. Communication is steady and very fast - as evidenced by iTunes working, video streaming, iPhoto recognizing libraries, etc.
    11) Name resolution between the machines works just fine. There are no odd routing tables or other infrastructure hiccups that might bog it down.
    12) I've pared down the share from "full library" to sharing only a single, tiny album. The album has a straightforward name with no spaces or odd characters and only a handful of pictures. No dice.

iPhoto on the Front Row computer does launch and, after I "OK" the warning about a suboptimal display resolution (an error I'd really like to eradicate), I do see the local iPhoto library.
I've tried several combinations to see what happens - I'll call the main "serving" computer "server," even 'tho it's not a "server," technically speaking - it's running regular ol' Tiger, same version as the Front Row machine ("FR").
    1. Neither machine running iPhoto: Front Row doesn't see the server's collection, nor does it offer the local library, either.
    2. Server running iPhoto, FR not: Front Row gives the error described above. When I quit Front Row, the iPhoto icon is bouncing, alerting me (again) to the fact that the display is suboptimal, so apparently Front Row is launching iPhoto in the background in order to connect (presumably) to the server's iPhoto library.
    3. Server running iPhoto, FR running iPhoto: If I "OK" the suboptimal display error on the FR machine so that both FR and server are running iPhoto, I get the error described above when attempting to view the server's iPhoto collection. iPhoto on the FR machine, however, does see the server's iPhoto collection - I can browse it, view it, etc. just fine.
    4. Server not running iPhoto, FR running iPhoto (again, clicking "OK" to get through that suboptimal display warning): FR iPhoto only displays local library; FR doesn't see server libraries and gives appropriate error.
Through all of this, I just noticed an oddity: at no point does Front Row attempt to let me browse the local iPhoto library... it only gives me the "shared albums" option. I need to check something but this could be an oddity: I don't believe there are any actual pictures or albums in the local library, only the server's library. Again, iPhoto does launch properly and will let me browse shared albums - I'm just not certain I populated the local library with anything. I'll check that tonight to see if it makes a whit of difference.

  • Noob questions about front row and back up...

    Dear all,
Please can you assist with the following for a proud new mac owner?
    1) Why do some songs/albums not play in front row but work in itunes?
    2) I have an external hard drive, iomega 500gb, which is very noisy. So i keep it switched off from the back. Can time machine still back up or does the external HDD have to be switched on?
    Many thanks...

    Hi Fireball Dragon
    1. I don't have a definite answer for you, but it sounds like a problem with your iTunes Library or the way you Imported your music into it. Go to: *Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility* and run *Disk Utility Repair Permissions.*
Also how are you selecting Music to play in Front Row, Shuffle or by Albums, Artist, Songs?
    2. No Time Machine will not backup with the External HD turned off, but it will resume backup as soon as it is switched on mounted. I personally don't run Time Machine backups every hour, I only switch it on for a few backups every day or after adding important files.
