Front Row Shared Photos unusably slow!

I have about 36,000 photos in iPhoto. When I share the library, and open it under Front Row, Shared Photos, it is just unusably slow! I have to wait about 5 minutes for the list to come up, even if I opened Front Row on the same machine as the iPhoto library. While this is happening, iPhoto is beach balled, and never becomes usable again, so I have to Force Quit it every time.
Any suggestions? I've already tried trashing the preferences file.

Follow iPhoto 6 and later: Rebuilding the iPhoto library and use the bottom 3 repair options.
It might also be helpful to remove Home > Library > Caches to the trash and restarting the computer.

  • Events do not appear in Front Row / Shared Photos

Events do not appear when launching Photos in Front Row, only Recent Viewed, Last Import, Web Galleries and Albums.
Doesn't it kind of defeats the purpose to have Events, which was implemented to make organizing easier and eradicate the large number of albums we usually had?

Yes, I think the Event implementation is lacking in a few areas. On the positive side, I noticed that iMovie and iDVD '08 allow you to browse Events and add them as slideshows.
Now all we need is for Apple to update FrontRow to support Events, and also update iTunes/iPod so that we can view our events on the iPod.
Although Events is a re-hashed "Film Rolls" feature, I believe that many people would be happy to group photos by Events, using Albums only rarely. If we can get full support for Events in other apps, then it would be great!

  • Front Row Sharing - Some TV shows not showing up

    Hi all,
I have a problem with iTunes' shared libary - it only shows a subset of TV shows within iTunes. I have a Mac Pro in my den, which hosts a pretty large itunes library (about 750GB), of which 350GB are TV shows I've either bought from iTunes or ripped from DVD. The machine is running 10.6 and iTunes is fully up to date. Everything works as you'd expect on the Mac Pro, and Front row can see all the videos iTunes can see.
In our bedroom we have a fairly recent Mac Mini. If i use iTunes ->iTunes sharing, all the titles show up correctly and I an watch any TV show.
However, if we use the sharing feature in front row on the mac mini, only a subset of TV shows appears - and infuriatingly it's not even 100% reliable which items will fail to show - but it is about 90% reliable, which is even more frustrating, as it's clearly not totally random. The shows most likely to be effected seem to be the ones added in the last few months.
I've also tried running front row on different clients on the same LAN - both my wife and my Macbook pros do the same, as does an iMac in our kitchen, so it seems to me to be either a problem which effects Front Row generally, or a fault on the iTunes server Mac Pro. Is my library simply too big for the Front Row sharing feature to work correctly? If so - this is ridiculous!?
I've looked into alternative clients for the Mac Mini, like Mediacentral, which doesn't seem to support sharing of iTunes videos, and also Plex which again doesn't appear to support this, but is frankly so complex it's hard to tell - if it will support seamless iTunes sharing of all content, I'd be happy to give it a go - but it doesn't look like it does.
Preferably there would just be a fix like deleteing some iTunes cache files or something on the Mac Pro - I've had a sniff about the iTunes XML file, and compared the data of some of theTV shows which turn up to some of those that don't and they all look identical, schema wise, so I'm none the wiser.
All machines tested are totally up to date, OS/iTUnes wise..
I haven't managed to find anything on the internet about this, which leads me to think it's probably an obscure issue with my iTUnes installation, rather than a problem with library size, since I'm sure many other people have bigger libraries than this....
    Any help greatly appreciated!

I have the same issue. My home shared library can all be seen on my iPhone or my Apple TV 3rd Gen but not on my ipad. Only some movies and tv shows show up. Also. Many of the TV shows are all mixed up. Episodes shows up in different series and all mix up. All those issues only on the iPad, on other devices, all seems fine.

  • Reinstalling Front Row and Photo Booth?

    Hi,
I had a hard drive failure a couple of months ago on my 20" G5 iMac. The Apple store replaced it in a day and reinstalled the OS. Thanks. Only after I had my entire computer set back up with all my apps, music, movies, etc., I realized that Front Row, and Photo Booth were not installed. How can I get them back on my machine without reinstalling the OS again? I tried Pacifier, but I don't know all of the different files and packages needed to intsall those two apps. Anyone know of a different solution?
    Thanks

Hey there ... Go search for a program called Pacifist. Its a shareware but it will let you do the job. I used it before to Install Mail which I accidently trashed it. It should absolutely work for Front Row too. Hope this will solve your problem. Sawadee Krub

  • Front row & shared libraries on same computer

    Hey
My girlfriend and I dont have the same music taste, which is why we like to keep our music on different accounts. However recently I've bought a Mac Mini intended to work as a mediacenter. I've planned to use Front Row along with the remote control, but I still like to keep 2 different music lists for me and the girlfriend.
So far I've tried with 2 accounts on the Mac mini each of them with shared Itunes libraries. I can access the 2 different libraries on other computers fine, but not through Front Row on the Mini itself.
Any ideas on how to solve my issue?
    Thx in advance.
    /Rocky

Ohhh it's easy... just get a new girlfriend ? <G>
    So I see your problem.
Just to be clear, you seem to be aware that using Fast User Switching, as opposed to logging out is the only way to half way make this work. But you are right, it doesn't seem possible to share different iTunes user accounts on the same computer thru Front Row.
As a matter of fact, I was playing a shared song in iTunes from another user on my computer, and when I clicked the remote to engage Front Row, the song stopped....
I would like to point out that it IS possible to share two different user's iTunes on another computer..... so if you set up your first computer with you and your girlfriend's accounts, set iTunes to share on both, then keep both accounts active by using Fast User Switching, THEN on your Mac Mini, you can access both of those shared accounts... just not at the same time.. This is done under the SOURCES menu...
If I come up with any other ideas... I'll let you know.

  • Front Row default Photo folder

I use iphoto on my Mac.
I have noticed that when I watch my photos in Front Row, many of the photos that I previously deleted are still shown in Front Row.
Does anyone know where / which folder Front Row gets the photos from?
    Thanks
    Keith

    Hi
it doesn't answer my (old !!!) question :
what about streaming in quick time ?
what about song order in front row ?
VLC is the proposed software by my FAI ! but thanks anyway !

  • Front Row : Shared Users On Local Machine

If, like in my house, I have my wifes music on her login, and my music on mine (we have very different tastes), I can't see them both in Front Row. I have both collections on the same machine - just with different logins. Surely there must be a way ?

you can accomplish it by utilising fast user switching, keeping bothing user and iTunes session running, or redirecting and centralising the iTunes libraries, which could be trickier, the former is easier to achieve.

  • Front Row, Shared Libraries and Cover Art.

I have my Macbook connected to my audio system and I share files between my Macbook and iMac. When playing files that are in the shared library (the files located on my iMac), most of the time the cover art doesn't show. Why is that?
I have noticed that the files where the Covert Art doesn't show up are files where the art was obtained through the iTunes store. The files where I have manually found the cover art work fine.

iTunes 7 does not embed artwork that it downloads, it stores it seperately.
You can embed it by applying it through the Get Info window. To do this:
    1. Ctrl-click on the picture in the lower left and select copy.
    2. Open preview and hit command-n to create a new file from the clipboard.
    3. Save the file to the desktop.
    4. Select all of the tracks on the album, ctrl-click on one and select "Get Info".
    5. Drag the picture from the desktop onto the artwork box.
You can also use a third party tool such as Curator or CoverScout.

  • Front Row: background music is gone while viewing Photos

    Hi,
I was trying to change background music about 2 weeks ago and felt succeeded in it. Since then Front Row with Photos was not used. Unfortunately today I figured out that music does not play anymore. Even selecting another music folder in iPhoto for event does not help:
+It works in iPhoto once Play button is clicked but does not produce desired effect in Front Row for the same Photos.+
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Todv, that's the problem . I don't really remember how did that before. Honestly this is my first month of experience working with OS X.
Initially my MBP was delivered with everything preinstalled. Front Row worked fine with Added photos. I didn't even create any Slideshows. Unfortunately only one specific track was played all the time what drove me crazy. Then somehow I changed the song (don't even remember how exactly). It worked. Didn't use Front Row for about 2 weeks and recently decided to watch photos with my girlfriend but... music stopped playing.

  • Front Row is taking a LOOOONG time to open movie lists.

    Hello
I have a Mac Mini Core Duo 1.66 with 512MB RAM.
I have an external hard drive for my video files, and the Mini is connected to my 1920x1080 Sharp LCD TV as a monitor. My movie files are located on the external drive, and I have an alias in my "Movies" folder, per advice from another forum posting.
When I launch Front Row, it takes almost 10 minutes to open my movie list - sometimes front row just freezes. I have perhaps 50 items in folders and sub-folders on my movie list, and they are all located on the external drive. When they were on the local drive, it also took a VERY long time just to open the movie list in Front Row (that's just opening the movie list, not even playing the movies!)
What's going on here? It's unusable as it is - how can I speed things up?
    Thanks,
    -----------S

I have a mini with an external drive containing a library of movie files and front row is also very slow with that - though in my case around a minute to pull up the list rather than 10.
Part of the problem may be the type of external. In my case, I have an enclosure which supports both Firewire and USB 2.0, and when connected by FW, immediately I select the movies option in front row, the drive is woken and the activity light starts blinking. After it has read the contents of the folder, front row then displays the list with a brief pause as the preview for the first movie in the list appears.
When connected by USB, the drive doesn't start responding for several seconds, and when it does the access light blinks at a much slower rate. That would be expected since USB doesn't have a dedicated controller, so data flow is dependent on how busy the system is with other things. FW on the other hand has a constant data rate due it it's dedicated controller, which means that while it is in theory slower than USB2.0, in practice it is generally faster to use.
Thus, if not already connected by FW, if your drive has that option, connect it that way. Also open the energy saver preference pane and make sure there is no checkmark against 'put hard drive to sleep when possible'.

  • How can I use apple remote with Mountain Lion? Any Front Row alternative?

    Hi All,
I recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
All great except for my Apple Remote control.
Before, I could effectively control my iMac media with Apple Remote by using Front Row (music, photos, videos, good integration with iTunes and iPhoto).
Now, as I understand, Front Row is expired.
So, my Apple remote still works but with very limited options (just music, forward, backward and volume), and it's a real pity.
Any of you Guys know how to restore Front Row?
Otherwise maybe suggest an alternative (sth similar, should allow iMac media control by Apple Remote)?
So far I tried to restore all Front Row files by a Time Capsule Snow Leopard backup (as indicatred on some other Communities).
To restore was easy, but then, no way to launch it.
    Any advice will help!
    Thanks in advance/all the best.
    Marco

Thanks Klaus1 for your prompt answer, although I went again through a dated discussion.
I also got the feeling that somehow they want to push Apple TV..
But, respectfully speaking towards our Friends at Apple, is it fair to promise what you don't deliver?
I have choosen apple because I percive it's different.
    At currently published link: http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC377Z/A/apple-remote
    they do promote the following:
    Apple Remote with Mac
The Apple Remote gives you total command of your music, photos, videos and DVDs from anywhere in the room. It works with Front Row - a menu-based, full-screen interface - to make accessing the digital content on your Mac as simple as navigating your iPod. When you press the Menu button, your desktop fades and the sleek, Front Row interface takes its place, to give you control over your music in iTunes, your photos in iPhoto, the videos in your Videos folder and your DVDs. Turn up the volume. Shuffle. Skip to the next chapter on your DVD. Play a slide show, a home video that you made in iMovie, even a film trailer.
Compatible with Apple products introduced in 2005 or later that have a built-in infrared (IR) receiver. Not compatible with MacBook Pro with Retina display.
Cost for this is 15£ (19€).
Now, I have iMac and Mac Book Pro (no retina display) both with Mountain Lion installed, and I understand both of them are not compatible with Front Row.
Actually I adore apple tv and I got 2 at home nicely working on 2 different TVs.
So I accomplished twice their wish of selling this product to me.
Why shall they deceive me (and many others, as I read) by killing a still promised service?
Should I read all forums before buying a trusted-brand-product like apple, to ensure that id does what declared?
Don't get me wrong, I'm an enthusiast user of the whole apple family, since many years, and still I am.
Just politely complaining for this decision, which creates to Many an easy avoidable disservice.
    Cheers
    Marco

  • Front Row on 2nd Gen iMac G5

Does anyone know whether it will be possible to run Front Row on a 2nd Gen iMac G5 using an Apple Remote?
Hos does the Apple Remote work? If it's a Bluetooth device, I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work?
Unless 'Front Row' is a 'hard-wired' ROM application?
I like the look but I bought a 2G recently, which I think is the nuts...to be honest the built in i-Sight is of little interest to me...makes me think of internet cafes...and it's going to make the London Store even more of a foreign exchange student hangout.

It says front row and photo booth are included in the software bundled with the iMac. " More software
In addition, the iMac G5 comes with an incredible bundle of software:
    • iLife ’05, which includes the latest versions of iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie HD, iDVD and GarageBand
    • Front Row
    • Photo Booth
    • iWork ‘05 30-day trial
    • AppleWorks
    • Quicken 2006 for Mac
    • 2006 World Book
    • Nanosaur 2
    • Marble Blast Gold
    • Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Test Drive "
I dont see why apple wont make that available for purchase for those of us who just bought that last rev Imac in May.

  • Places is not shown in front row

when I go to front row,it shows that there is no photo in this album, while I have photos linked to google maps in iPhoto!
    where is the bug?

I don't even see "Places" anywhere inside Front Row's "Photos" module. Which version of Mac OS X, Front Row, QuickTime and iPhoto are you using?

  • IPhoto Slideshow music settings/Front Row

I recently purchase a Mac Mini to use as a media center PC. I have imported photo's into iPhoto and configured slide shows with appropriate music ... in iPhoto all these settings work fine. When I access these photo's via Front Row
however, each of the slide shows plays with Minuet in G and my iPhoto music settings are ignored. any thoughts would be most welcome on how to have my iPhoto slide show music recognized with Front Row.
    Thanks,
    Paul

Well I may have found my answer ... If I run slideshows in Front Row from
Photos/Events I have the Minuet in G problem ... if I create albums in iPhoto and run the Event from within an album, the music selected in this album slideshow holds in Front Row ... at any rate it works for me!

  • Slideshows are Choppy in Front Row

Hi all, thanks in advance for any advice you may have.
I can view slideshows smoothly when played directly from iphoto. However, when I view the same slideshow from within Front Row, there is a slow down when transitioning from one image to the next. This means the show gets out of sync with the music. I use the slideshows for my business, so this is unacceptable.
I'm fairly certain that this started happening with I upgraded to from Leopard to Snow Leopard.
Any ideas on what I could try to fix this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Have you also inquired over in the Front Row forum? Your situation hasn't been discussed before here as far as I can tell.
Try clearing out iPhoto's cache folder, User/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto, and rebuild the library's database, backup and launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed to rebuild the library. Select the last three options.
See if that makes any difference.
If the slideshows are critical you might want to consider creating them as QT movies so the music stays in sync and playing the movies in Front Row.
