Front row to play mkv files

Is there any codec to make this happen have tried perain and still doesnt work.
Thanx in advance!

MKV files are a bit tricky to get playing, VLC might do it but I doubt that'll help frontrow, it might be worth using handbrake to re-encode these files into MP4.

  • Front Row: problems playing WMV files

I’m running a Macbookpro OSX 10.5.7, and have been working to config Front Row to play the movies on my hard drive (not in iTunes). I’ve installed both flip4mac and Perian in order to play all file types. This works great for QuickTime and the web. Front Row, however, has a problem playing my wmv files (all others play fine). When a wmv file is selected in FR, it only plays for a few seconds, then stops and returns to the movie list. I researched the solution provided by VideoDrive, which works, but I prefer to organize my videos into subfolders by category, rather than all in an alpha list in iTunes.
If I play a wmv in it’s entirety in Quicktime, it will then play in Front Row. This tells me it’s some sort of cache issue? My attempt to test this theory has been inconclusive, prob due to my ignorance.
    Troubleshooting to date has been:
Quitting FR from the Activity Monitor
    Deleting user/library/preferences/com.apple.frontrow.plist
    Uninstalling and reinstalling flip4mac
    Installing Perian
Would prefer not to have to rip all of my video to mp4 (I use iSquint), but I’m out of ideas.
Apologies in advance if this is covered elsewhere.

  • Playing .mkv files in QTX/QT7 video works fine, sound is distorted.

What I'm trying to do is open some .mkv files in Quicktime 7 so that I can export it as an mp4 with AAC audio (instead of AC3, 5.1). The audio during playback ends up sounding like a helicopter or what you'd hear if you stuck a piece of sandpaper in a box fan. When I play the files in VLC the audio is as it should be. I'm at a loss as to what the problem could be. I have version 1.2.1 of Perian installed as well if that helps at all.

It could be a 'difficult' form of Matroska file. FYI Matroska is just a container like MOV or AVI, and some mkv have the video encoded with Real Video Codec (RV9 RV10). Perian+QT can't decode this, but VLC will play .mkv files just fine on OS X, as long as they don't use H.264!
It's a bit of a lottery until Matroska decide to support the Apple platform. I have found this:
    http://mkv4mac.free.fr/index.php?lang=en&p=lec
    which may help.
But there may be another workaround: 1. Get Info the mkv file
    2. Change to extension to wmv. Save as wmv and that could work better.
Or this link may be helpful:

Recently, a poster (ZachP14) suggested this:
"There's a program called Plex that runs .mkv files awesome on my 2.0 ghz macbook."

    Maybe worth a try?

  • Can apple TV be made to play .mkv files?

Has anyone been able to make apple TV play .mkv files?

If you install http://perian.org/ quicktime will be able to play mkv files including the ac3 audio.
You can use Quicktime to save the file as a mov which should then play on the AppleTV. Personally I use VisualHub, it's much faster and allows you to queue up a batch to process. It will depend on your system, but my machine will recode a TV show in approx. 30mins.
The Visualhub method will loose the surround sound. AC3 and DTS are not supported by the mp4 container so it will be converted to stereo. You should be able to keep the AC3 or DTS in a mov, but I've not tried this so I don't know whether the AppleTV will play the file.
As the new firmware will allow for HD movies with surround sound (according to the MacWorld keynote) there might be a fix for this then. We'll have to wait for someone to rent a movie and see what the container and codecs used are. Hopefully we'll be able to use 5.1 AAC and the AppleTV will convert that to AC3 out of the optical output for my surround amp as AC3 and DTS take up a lot of space.

  • Force front row to play video on 16:9 aspect ratio

Hello, I would like to know if there is a way to force front row to play a 3:4 video in 16:9 aspect ratio.
As you can imagine, I have a 16:9 TV and I would like to see it, better in 16:9.
This can be done very well by Quicktime, I don't know why it seems not to be possible to do on Front Row.
Look forward to reading some answer.
    thanks,
    pvazquez

No, Front Row just plays them as they are flagged.
Even if you could, the video would be stretched and people would be short and fat!

  • Get Front Row to play from HVDVD_TS folder

How can I get Front Row to play content from a HVDVD_TS folder. It works great with standard VIDEO_TS folders (under Leopard/Snow Leopard) but it doesn't seem to recognise my DVD Studio Pro generated HVDVD_TS folder.
    Thx!

I have the same problem with remote control device (infrared) and FrontRow as many other users, see links below.
And yes, I have tried all the described "remedies", but the problem is still there.
The problem is that after boot, FrontRow reacts to the remote ok (about 10-15 minutes), but then
FrontRow stops responding to remote control commands. However, FrontRow can be controlled by keyboard
commands all the time. If iMac is now booted, the problem is still there. The only way I have had FrontRow
and remote work ok (for 10-15 mins) is shutting down iMac, waiting an hour or so, and then booting it. I'm just
wondering is this hardware problem (related to e.g. temperature ?), problem with FrontRow itself, or problem with
related daemons. Anyway, I hope that this is sw problem, and Apple could fix quite soon in next FrontRow or Mac OS X
update. Otherwise, I'm 100% sure to replace my iMac because of this stupid little bug (that seemed to be the only
    working remedy).

  • Unable to play .mkv files

I used to be able to play .mkv files with VLC Player just fine before. After I started using Boot Camp with Windows XP, I am unable to play such files because I get an error message saying this computer is too slow to process the video. I'm trying to play 720p movies, but haven't been able to on a 2.2 Ghz MBP with 2 Gigs of ram. So, if anyone has a solution, please post! Thank you!

Any other video works. I tried launching vlc with --no-video and then sound channel works. Both totem and vlc gives Segmentation Fault in terminal.
I remember when I installed vlc, it asked whether I will use gstreamer or phonon, I did choose gstreamer. Now I tried reinstalling vlc and it didn't ask for that anymore.
Ok, I tried opening other mkv files and they worked (I don't know why all the time I thought that the file is 100% ok, apparently it wasn't). But that file was similar to any other files (just a new episode of one TV show).
P.S. I noticed that I can open that file with Windows and there are audio bugs, but It shows video well... Ahhh, the most important is that video codecs are fine on my arch, so let it be so!
A strange bug, but if it's like that only with one wrong file, then it's ok. Sorry about bothering you here about my strange file

  • Front Row not playing Trailers or Top 10 iTunes Movies

Hoping someone might be able to help me out with this weird problem I have had for a few months (since before Leopard, but it persists since updating to 10.5.1.)
My Front Row wont play the Theatrical Trailers or iTunes Top 10 movies previews.
It happily updates the list. But whenever I click on one I get:
"The Selected Video Could Not Be Played, The Format Was Not Recognised".
I have no problems playing TV Show previews, Music Videos and my own ripped movies.
I get the same results on my Apple TV and my 18 month old intel iMac.
    Any ideas ? Much appreciated.

I'm having this same problem. The only solution I've found, scouring both the forum and internet, is to wait until it figures itself out, which is completely unacceptable. I recently updated my software and still no joy.

  • Playing MKV files with a burned DVD on BDP S470

I have found that my player is compatible with MKV files. My question is can I play them back on a burned disc? And if so, do I just burn the MKV file to the DVD like I would any other file(s). If not does anyone out there know the correct procedure and proper softwarefor taking the MKV files and transferring them to a DVD so they play in my player? Right now I use imgburn for making duplicates of my DVD movies for my personal backup. I would like to do the same with my BR movies especially the ones that require a double layer BR which right now cost wayyyy too much. I just want to convert so it can fit on a single layer BR

  • Why won't Front Row recognize DV movie files??

    Hi,
I've placed several DV movie files in my 'Movies' folder and Front Row doesn't seem to find them. If I save the files as an MOV file, front row sees them instantly, but a) it doubles the file size and b) I shouldn't have to do that.
The first Intel iMac I had (which was returned for other reasons) saw and played the same files immediately after they were dropped in the folder.
Does anyone know why this might be happening??Does the recent Front Row software update have something to do with it??
As always, any help is greatly appreciated!
    -SS

    Hey Rachel,
I use QuickTime Pro to save them as MOV files. If you want a free solution, I'm pretty sure you'd be able to do it using iMovie. Import the DV file and then export it as an MOV file. There's probably another free program out there that will do it more simply, but I haven't looked into that.
I think this degrades the quality a little bit though, and we shouldn't have to go to this trouble. The DV files (and any other Quicktime-playable format) should show up in Front Row if placed into your "Movies" folder. At least that's my understanding...

  • Front Row showing inexistent movie files

I've had some movie file in the Movies folder that showed up in the Front Row list in Movies, under the line underneath Theatrical Trailers and Movies Folder.
I have deleted the files from the folder and secure emptied the trash but they're still on the list in Front Row.
How is that possible and how can I make them disappear from there ?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
No, Front Row should search in both locations. Music videos, movies and TV shows that appear in those categories in iTunes and are saved in your iTunes library should appear in Front Row under the "Videos" option. Also, any individual movie files (that can be played with the QuickTime Player application) that live inside your <Macintosh HD>/Users/<your user name>/Movies/ should also appear in Front Row, but they won't be categorized as "TV shows" or "Music Videos" like they are in iTunes.
Can you play your videos in your "Movies" folder with the QuickTime Player application by double-clicking on them? If not, then they won't appear to Front Row.

  • Front Row not playing ogg vorbis

    Hi!
I installed the OGG vorbis Quicktime components from www.xiph.org and iTunes plays these files perfectly. However, when I want to use Front Row to listen to them, I only get the message that the file cannot be played.
Can anyone help me with that?
    Thanks in advance

I have the same problem. I'm not sure if I had this same problem in 10.4.x, or if it came with Leopard ... (I just upgraded.)
Too bad Apple doesn't include OGG/Vorbis and FLAC to the list of officially supported formats, what do they have to loose?
