Front Row Using iPod Dock - Is it possible.

Hello there. I've been trying to find some info on the iPod Dock only because I've heard from some that it includes the Apple Remote, but can not seem to get this confirmed on either the apple store or amazon.
First off is it even possible to use the remote with the iPod Dock? From my understanding it is, so if that's the case wouldn't it then be possible to use Front Row on the Mac Pro since the IR port is now technically there?
I mean mainly I use my Mac Pro for doing work, but as the system is in my bedroom I think that it's kind of silly that I can't lay in bed at night and watch a movie without having to get up out of bed or something. That's really my only complaint about the system.. you pay a fairly larger amount more for being able to use a feature that's already built into the system the only means to access it is to purchase a separate ~$600 system.
Oh well sorry to rant off. Anyway, can you control Front Row on the Mac Pro using the iPod Dock?
Cheers

I'd like to be able to also do this with my iMac G5, the iPod dock connected to it and my Apple Remote. Unfortunately, a search of versiontracker.com finds lots of apps to extend functionality on Macs that already are supported (ie have built in IR), as well as apps that let you use Bluetooth devices as a clicker on any Mac.
Anyone got a suggestion?

• Front Row From Universal Dock

Is it possible to use the universal dock with an apple remote to control the front row on a mac?
Anyone have tested?
Thanks

i cant understand apple not have a ir receiver for other macs...
It's against the Terms of Use of the Apple Discussions to talk about unannounced or unreleased products, but Apple has announced that Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) will come with a copy of Front Row for All Macs that support Leopard. It's possible that they will then make a USB IR receiver available for people who do want to use an Apple remote with their Mac. Or, it could that it will just support other third party remote controls (there are quite a few on the market now).

• Opening Front Row Using Applescript

I have created a sleep timer for Front Row but I would like if Front Row would open when I run the sleep timer. I have tried the normal activate command as well as open and launch but none of these open front row.
Can anyone show me some code that will open Front Row automatically?
Thanks for the help.

That still didnt open Front Row.
I was wondering if it was possibly to use the keyboard shortcut to activate front row. the command escape keys pressed together open front row. I dont know how to do that using applescript though.
Thanks for the effort though.

• Front row using iphoto as core to display photos?

Hi all,
i have a question about leopard front row as i still have not got it yet in asia i wonder if someone could enlighten me about using front row and iphotos.
main thing is that i do not have iLife install in my Macbook at all, but after upgrading to leopard will front row still be using iphotos as its core photos display and slide shows? as i really do not need the use of iLife that's y i do not need that to be on my Macbook.
Would appreciate someone would enlighten me.

Front Row requires you to have iPhoto. The iPhoto library is the only place it looks for pictures. If you don't want to use iPhoto, which comes on your MacBook, you could use a third party utility like .

• Does Front Row use Quicktime plugins during play?

Hi,
Just curious - does Front Row play everything that you've set up Quicktime to play? For example, if my Quicktime can play Divx files that my Toast 7 creates, does that automatically mean Front Row can play them as well? Or, does Front Row have it's own feature set of things it will and won't play?
Thanks

Yes, it does. Any app that uses the QuickTime architecture has available everything else that QuickTime does.

• Can Front Row use external HDs for Movies?

Hey, I download and store podcasts, vidcasts, and movies on my external USB/firewire HD and I was wondering if Front Row could play them off of there. From what I've read, Front Row accesses movie files from ~/Movies but not elsewhere. Could I perhaps add an alias to the folder with my other movies to trick Front Row into playing them?

No no no...you don't need iTunes, but yes, you can do it. I just posted this in another thread so here it is again...this is how I do it. For short, I put an alias of the folder on the external drive (or just a separate partition on internal HD) into my Movies folder, and it works! Here you go, from http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1837976#1837976:
All you have to do is make an alias of the folder your videos are in and put it in your Movies folder in your Home folder. To do this, click and drag the folder on your external drive where your videos are stored. Hold down Command and Option, then drop the folder in your Movies folder, noting the little arrow indicating you are making an alias.
The same can be done with your iTunes setup if you're clever. Move your iTunes folder out of your Music folder in your Home folder and onto your external drive, then put all your music files inside the iTunes folder in iTunes Music. Then make an alias of your iTunes folder back into your Music folder in your Home folder. Aliases can also be made by selecting a file and choosing Make Alias from the File menu in the Finder.
I have used this setup for awhile, even over a network for a period. Works great. Good luck.
• Playing ipod nano 3rd generation through stereo using ipod dock

Hubby gave me an ipod dock for xmas so i can play the ipod through the stereo, we connected it all up and for a while it was fine. A couple of times recently the ipod has frozen, the screen distorted and it wouldn't play. I have had to reset it a couple of times which is so annoying, can you tell me why this is happening?

Is the dock an Apple product or third party? Look closely at the metal connectors on both the dock and ipod. Have any become bent or crooked?

• Using iPod docking station in my car.

I just bought and aux cable that plugs into the back of my vehicles factory stereo. The aux cable does not control the iPod. Since the cable plugs into the bottom dock of my iPod would I be able to instead plug it into the Apple docking station I use at my computer so I can use the remote? Any help would be great.

It is really surprising to me that Apple would not be aware before releasing the new nano that this is an issue. I have had the same car stereo for over 6 years with my old gen nanos and never a problem. I got the new one with 16 gb so that I could have a much wider range of playlists to choose from while driving. ***** that it shuffles constantly. Can we skip the first track in order to get normal playback?
*Also another issue I am having is that the nano does not automatically charge as it is playing*. Never had that issue on any of my past nanos. Anyone else bump into this problem?
I am really disappointed so far and I never thought I would feel this way about an Apple product. How do we recommend directly to Apple that a firmware update is needed.

• Using Front Row on a second display

TVRow version 2 is now available:
http://sites.google.com/site/robijnx/products/tvrow201
This allows the user to select which display Front Row uses. It is useful for home entertainment (eg using a projector or plasma TV).
This topic is covered in an archived discussion:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1374039&tstart=0
and some more background at:
http://users.tpg.com.au/aoaug/mac_video.html#frontrow
(eg external displays on an iMac G5)
It would be useful if this option was available directly in Front Row settings.

Having used TV Roow 2 for a few weeks, I do find it as nuisance that I cannot swap displays with Front Row running. Sometimes I want to run Front Row on the iMac and other times on the projector. I need to select TV Row from the Dock and change the display option to achieve this. In some respects Version 1 was better because starting TV Row automatically sent Front Row to the projector, whereas starting Front Row with teh Apple Remote left it on the iMac.
Still waiting for Front Row to include a menu to select the display to use...

• Can Front Row be set to use VLC?

I'd like to be able to play my .avi movies using front row, but it seems to default to using Quick Time, which doesn't play all of my movies. VLC works wonderfully, is there a way to make Front Row use VLC?
Any help with this is appreciated, thanks. =)

you can download divx for free, then you can play your avi files with quicktime, therefor allowing you to play them in frontrow... the divx codec is free... works well too..
here is where you can download it..

• Shuffle music videos using front row

Hello, I just can´t figure it out, can I shuffle music videos using front row?
MAc mini   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I don't think anyone's figured out how to do that. Music and music playlists from iTunes are played through iTunes. However, even if your video is inside iTunes the video is played through Front Row using the QuickTime Player application, not iTunes. Since the QuickTime Player application is not reading playlists from iTunes and has no "shuffle" option of its own, I don't think it can be done. If you do make a playlist in iTunes that has videos on it, all you get is the audio and a black screen when they're played with iTunes.
I would suggest you send Apple some Mac OS X feedback and let them know you'd like to see an option like this.

• Viewing iMovie events using Front Row looks stretched

I imported some standard def footage (4:3) using iMovie.
When viewing the resulting "dv" files in the "iMovie Events" folder, they look a bit stretched horizontally.
Anyone know why this is?
They look good playing them full screen in iMovie.
They play fine in Quicktime.

I called Apple, but got stuck. They said that iMovie and Quicktime do things that Front Row does not (like adjust for certain things related to aspect ratio I think). They said that Front Row uses the aspect ratio from the original device. I imported these standard def 4:3 mini dv tapes using my Canon HV20 camcorder, not the Sony TRV 30 I recorded them on. I wonder if this i the issue? If so, is there any way to change "the original device setting" for aspect ratio in the dv file?
Here is what "Movie Inspector" in Quicktime shows for the format:
Format: DV, 720 x 480 (640 x 480), Millions
DV, Stereo, 32.000 kHz
But, when I go to Movie Properties->Video Track all 3 items (normal size, display size, and scaled size) show 640x480.
What is the 720 in the Format from Movie Inspector? Can I change it?

• Using Front Row with remote control?

Hi,
Can anyone please advise if I can activate Front Row using the remote control in OSX Server?
Before I upgrade from OSX 10.4 to 10.5 Server, the remote control was working fine. I believe OSX Server may have disabled it? Is there anyway to enable it?
Many Thanks!

Hmm.. found it under Security setting...
Thanks !
