Front Row & Video Podcast Play Count

I have one of the new Core Duo 20" iMacs. I've found that Front Row does something unexepected. When I watch a video podcast through Front Row, and I mean watch it to the end of the file, the play count in iTunes is not updated. I've checked, and the count is updated for music files and audio podcasts. This only seems to happen with video podcasts. Any else having this problem? Solutions?
I suspect it's happening because audio is probably played through iTunes, whereas the video is Quicktime.
Thanks in advance,
J

I don't haven't used Front Row to play movies or video - but the problem you are describing has been happening in both Quicktime and iTunes on my Mac, ever since I installed Leopard. There are a few things I've tried that work to get the video and audio back in sync - one is to pause the video, and to leave it paused for 5 or 10 minutes. When I come back and restart it, sometimes it will play normally. The other thing that I've tried is to actually shut down iTunes and restart it - for some reason that works a bit more consistently.
Another problem I have is less dire - and that is occasionally a video or movie will lose its audio altogether - when that happens the "fix" is to stop the video for a few seconds, then restart it. It usually works. Again, the operative word is usually. Unfortunately I haven't found a way to stop this from happening at all - which is what I'd prefer, but these fixes (and sometimes a combination of them) will get me through a movie. I'd love some guidance from the home office on this though! Anyone at Apple care to take a bite?

  • Movie trailers in the front row / video

I am wondering if there is anyway to get rid of those movie trailers in the front row/video? They must be taking up hundreds of mb of space? Fun to watch but gees...I would rather have the space on my hard drive (I am stingy that way):)

Jeffrey is correct, Front Row plays the movie trailers from Apple's Web site. They're not kept on your hard drive. That's how they change every week. While a small "cache" might remain behind after playing one, it should be cleaned-off the next time you log off or restart.

  • Front Row Video Conversion

Most of the video files I have I play with VLC beacuse quicktime will not play them. They are avi files. I was wondering if there was some program out there that would convert these files to mp4 or something quicktime can read so ic an play them in front row.
OR if there is a way to change the default player of front row that would be great. VLC is more versatile than quicktime. It will play quicktime files but not the other way around. Thanks!!

You're welcome. The current version of Front Row will only play on the "main" screen. You can choose to "mirror" both displays and then you'll see the same thing on both your built-in screen and the TV or other display. When Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) is released later this year, it will include Front Row for everyone. I would send Apple some Mac OS X feedback and let them know you'd like to have an option to select the display screen for Front Row.

  • Front row video doesnt work any more....

After around two months of complete operation front row now doesnt play videos, when selected i get the following message:
'YOu dont have any movie files in the movies folder in your home folder'
In the finder window, the little blue movie icon isnt there anymore, instead theres just a normal blue file.
Think i need to get the blue movie icon back in the finder window.
Anyideas how i can get this back?

Did you rename or move your "Movies" folder?
If you have your user home directory in the sidebar (far left hand side of the finder window that looks like a house), click on that.
Do you see a folder named "Movies"? If you do, is there anything inside it?
If you accidently renamed it or moved it out of your home directory, Front Row won't be able to find your movies.

  • Front Row lists Podcasts in Movies?

For some reason my Front Row is listing some of my podcasts (early Diggnation and AOTS) in the movies directory. I only have like 5 .mov files (random clips from the net) in that folder and it's anoying that there is all those extra podcasts in that section?
    Any help?

Are these podcasts that you signed up for via iTunes?
    Are they all old podcasts?
Front Row looks for certain meta-data tagged with videos from iTunes. It sounds like these may have been mis-tagged (or early versions) and aren't being recognized by Front Row as podcasts. Unfortunately at the moment none of that meta-data is user changeable so you won't be able to fix where these show up.
Can you re-download them? Maybe re-aquireing these podcasts will properly tag them

  • Front Row Won't Play Slideshow Music (iTunes)

I created a slideshow in iPhoto and selected an iTunes playlist as my music source. When I play the slideshow from Front Row the music does not play. However, if I play a photo event from Front Row the default music does play. Why won't my slideshow play the music?
    Please advise.

Front Row in Mac OS X 10.5.x has been broken the whole time. It used to work fine in Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger). Front Row will not play an iTunes playlist during a slideshow if the playlist contains more than one song. You can use a playlist that only has one song in it, but then you might as well just choose a single song instead of a playlist! I would suggest you send Apple some Mac OS X feedback:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
For what it's worth, iPhoto seems to work fine with slideshows and iTunes playlists with more than one song.

  • Front Row doesn't play nicely with MP4's

Friends, I have several MP4 music videos which were downloaded from YouTube. They play fine in Quicktime, and Quicklook opens them fine. I dragged them into iTunes mostly just to see If they would play there. They work fine. The problem is that when I open MUSIC in Front Row, the videos are shown as an available playlist, but when I try to open that playlist, Front Row tells me that there is no music in the files. I wonder if I'm asking FR to do something it just doesn't want to do, or perhaps I need to rename the file, or store them in another manner in iTunes. It's not really a big deal, just one of those things that makes ya go Hmmmm....
For what it's worth, my QT version is 7.6, iTunes is version 8 and FR has been updated to 2.1.7.
    I'll appreciate your insight.
    Thanks
    Jon

Yes, there are only three or four settings stored in there. The last module selected when you closed Front Row (Music, TV Shows, Podcasts, DVD, Photos, or Movies), the country your iTunes is set for (so Front Row can show the "top rated" items from the store) and whether or not you've turned on sound effects and/or the Front Row screen saver. No other preferences are stored there. All of the media-specific preferences are store in the application that controls that media (the DVD Player.app for the DVD settings, iTunes for the Music settings and iPhoto for the Photos settings).

  • Front row video

i dont know what it is.. but front row is VERY slow when i wanna play videos (even mpeg4 and h264 videos) i tried to install divx, but it isnt getting better.. everytime i start front row and choose videos its horrible, i have to wait for 2 minutes, then my videos are listed, when i wanna go back it takes me nearly 5 minutes, i dont know how to close front row manually. any ideas to get this thing faster?
tomorrow ill get my memory, maybe it will get faster..

i think it is the latest version of front row, there is no update available on the update service of macosx..
i dont have ANY things in my itunes database
the movie folder konsists of 6 files à 300mb
but i think MOVIES, are much bigger than that.. so it shoul handle it..
why the **** sells apple computers with only 512mb of ram? seems so tiny!

  • Front Row Video Distortion

I have a new iMac intel 20" screen, and I downloaded some TV shows from iTunes and they are very distorted - the sound is fine, but the picture is not good quality. I have downloaded the latest Front Row update (1.2.2), but it really did not help. Is there a way to fix this? All of my dvds play fine...would it help to burn the shows to a dvd then play them? Or could I change the screen resolution or media player? thanks!

What do you mean by distorted? Does it appear blocky or is there rough movement in dark backgrounds?
When you view the video using the window in iTunes, does the video look better?
If it looks better in a smaller screen, remember that the shows at the iTMS are compressed for viewing on the iPod, and while most of them display fine on a television screen, they may not look as good on your iMac screen at full screen. I see a lot of blockiness in things like Battlestar Galactica when I play them full screen on my 17'' Apple Display connected to my G5, but the TV handles them fairly well when playing them from the Mini using Front Row.

  • Front Row won't play movie trailers and previews

When I try to access the apple movie/Tv trailers through front row I get the message:
"the selected video could not be played. The format was not recognized"
Front Row and iTunes are both updated to the latest version-
My Firewall's set to allow all incoming connections-
The trailers work fine in iTunes
Any ideas what could be causing this and what I can do about it?

I am also experiencing this problem. When I select the Trailer I want to watch, it gives my the same error. Both iTunes and Front Row are updated to the latest version. If it helps, I recently did a complete re-install of my system. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help us here!

  • Front Row won't play Theatrical Trailers

When I try to play a theatrical trailer in Front Row on my iMac, I get the following error:
+The selected video could not be played. The format was not recognized.+
Only a few days ago it was working - can anyone help fix this?

Same here. Some work, some don't. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. I have a brand new iMac at work with SnowLeopard, while at home I have a slightly older iMac running Leopard. Last night I tried accessing some trailers at home and some worked, while the one next to it would not. Same thing also on Apple TV. It is infuriating and baffling. It is one of the nice things about Apple TV to be able to browse the trailers... but if they don't work it renders the thing useless.

  • Front Row won't play .mp4 files

I just recently started using Front Row and, for some reason, it won't play .mp4 files. The said files are in my Movie folder and show up in Front Row's "Movies" menu, but when I try to play them it says "Selected video could not be played, format was not recognized."
    Please help!!

iTunes only supports MP4s encoded using the Main Profile, but many MP4s that you can download from the web are encoded using High Profile. These need to be converted.
You can use an app like VideoSpec or MediaInfo to list the encoding characteristics of your MP4s.

  • Front Row doesn't play music!!!

I don't know what's going on with my Front Row, but my music and podcasts will not play on Front Row! It's weird: my movies play, my photos from iPhoto can do slideshows. It just doesn't play music. It always says: "Front Row cannot find any songs. Use iTunes to import songs or purchase songs from the iTunes Store." I just updated my iTunes, Quicktime, and all the other computer updates. Still no luck....

  • Front row doesn't play default music when displaying an event slideshow

I bought an iMac recently, the first time I used front row to display event slideshows it plays a default classical music. The same event displayed in iphoto '08 plays several default songs, but for some reason front row at this moment doesn't plays any music. I suspect that I clicked the save settings button in iphoto when I tried to play a slideshow.
Anyway, I would like to restore all the default settings and play the default music in front row and iphoto for all my photo events.

  • Front Row refusing to play my iTunes store purchases!

This never happened before, but when I go to play songs on Front Row which I purchased from the store, it says my computer isn't authorised and to enable it by going to iTunes, clicking authorise and signing in to my account. I've done this several times, and even whilst clicking onto every song I purchased.
What makes it stranger, is if I open iTunes, start playing a song I purchased and then go to front row whilst it's still playing, and click 'now playing', it shows the song and artwork and the song continues playing as normal. Now that I'm in front row, if I browse to that song and try to play it, it comes up with that message.
    What is going on?!

    James,
You may see my previous posts. I had the self same problem until I installed 10.4.9, but that also included the Front Row 1.3 update. Did you include that in your update? That may be the solution as my problem has now been resolved. Also if you look up and down this forum there are a number of threads with solutions such as deleting the .plist files. It seemed to work for others, but not for me.
    Hope you sort it out
