Front Row Video Support

I am using Front Row on my intel iMac. I am trying to find out what video formats it supports and if there is any configuration that can be done for Front Row. Does Front Row support MPEG2 video display?

Are you looking for someone to help, or just try to criticize?
Yes, I know that Apple is not perfect, but they are as close to being perfect as any other company I know. Just look at Microsoft and try to say the word perfect, it does not even fit into their way of thinking.
Now...
Apple does not support copying movies, for one simple fact. They have the music/recording industries snooping down their backs every waking moment because of the iPod and iTunes. Apple of all companies of course would never support copying movies anyway, they would not risk their reputation. Not only that, but Front Row, and iTunes is just music storing softwares anyway. Front Row is a playback application, and I have Windows MCE (Stupid Media Center Edition), and it does not copy movies either.
However...
There are third-party application that you can easily download and install that will copy the movies for you. HandBrake (http://handbrake.m0k.org/) is one such app.
Please quit criticizing Apple for it's brand new application which is in its first version, that beat's Windows Media Centers 3rd Edition. And Apple's software is first class. If you want crap, then just look at some of Microsoft's software, even on the Mac platform it is horrible.
And you can easily add folders, since front row just look in your users movies folder, you can add the folders there, and drop the media file in.

  • Movie trailers in the front row / video

I am wondering if there is anyway to get rid of those movie trailers in the front row/video? They must be taking up hundreds of mb of space? Fun to watch but gees...I would rather have the space on my hard drive (I am stingy that way):)

Jeffrey is correct, Front Row plays the movie trailers from Apple's Web site. They're not kept on your hard drive. That's how they change every week. While a small "cache" might remain behind after playing one, it should be cleaned-off the next time you log off or restart.

  • Front Row Video problem

For some reason whenever i go to Front Row and go to the video section, it goes directly back to the desktop. I have restarted my computer twice and the same thing happened. Does anybody know a fix?
    P.S.
I have tiger so its not the most recent version of front row

If you use the Accounts System Preferences to create a new user, log out and log in as the new user, can they open the "Videos" module? If so, then Front Row is functioning normally but you may have a file in your original user's Movies folder that's causing the trouble. If the new user can't open the videos module, then there's some kind of system-wide Front Row or QuickTime problem.

  • Front Row Video Conversion

Most of the video files I have I play with VLC beacuse quicktime will not play them. They are avi files. I was wondering if there was some program out there that would convert these files to mp4 or something quicktime can read so ic an play them in front row.
OR if there is a way to change the default player of front row that would be great. VLC is more versatile than quicktime. It will play quicktime files but not the other way around. Thanks!!

You're welcome. The current version of Front Row will only play on the "main" screen. You can choose to "mirror" both displays and then you'll see the same thing on both your built-in screen and the TV or other display. When Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) is released later this year, it will include Front Row for everyone. I would send Apple some Mac OS X feedback and let them know you'd like to have an option to select the display screen for Front Row.

  • Front row video doesnt work any more....

After around two months of complete operation front row now doesnt play videos, when selected i get the following message:
'YOu dont have any movie files in the movies folder in your home folder'
In the finder window, the little blue movie icon isnt there anymore, instead theres just a normal blue file.
Think i need to get the blue movie icon back in the finder window.
Anyideas how i can get this back?

Did you rename or move your "Movies" folder?
If you have your user home directory in the sidebar (far left hand side of the finder window that looks like a house), click on that.
Do you see a folder named "Movies"? If you do, is there anything inside it?
If you accidently renamed it or moved it out of your home directory, Front Row won't be able to find your movies.

  • Front row video

i dont know what it is.. but front row is VERY slow when i wanna play videos (even mpeg4 and h264 videos) i tried to install divx, but it isnt getting better.. everytime i start front row and choose videos its horrible, i have to wait for 2 minutes, then my videos are listed, when i wanna go back it takes me nearly 5 minutes, i dont know how to close front row manually. any ideas to get this thing faster?
tomorrow ill get my memory, maybe it will get faster..

i think it is the latest version of front row, there is no update available on the update service of macosx..
i dont have ANY things in my itunes database
the movie folder konsists of 6 files à 300mb
but i think MOVIES, are much bigger than that.. so it shoul handle it..
why the **** sells apple computers with only 512mb of ram? seems so tiny!

  • Front Row Video Distortion

I have a new iMac intel 20" screen, and I downloaded some TV shows from iTunes and they are very distorted - the sound is fine, but the picture is not good quality. I have downloaded the latest Front Row update (1.2.2), but it really did not help. Is there a way to fix this? All of my dvds play fine...would it help to burn the shows to a dvd then play them? Or could I change the screen resolution or media player? thanks!

What do you mean by distorted? Does it appear blocky or is there rough movement in dark backgrounds?
When you view the video using the window in iTunes, does the video look better?
If it looks better in a smaller screen, remember that the shows at the iTMS are compressed for viewing on the iPod, and while most of them display fine on a television screen, they may not look as good on your iMac screen at full screen. I see a lot of blockiness in things like Battlestar Galactica when I play them full screen on my 17'' Apple Display connected to my G5, but the TV handles them fairly well when playing them from the Mini using Front Row.

  • Front Row & Video Playlists?

    hi,
Just got my new mini out of the box and hooked up to our TV. Love it!!!
However, there really isn't much info on Front Row. It works briliantly with .MP4's amd itunes stuff..but I was just wondering if there's any way to create video playlists that Front Row will recognize. I'd like to organize videos insgtead of having one huge list....
Maybe I'm missing it or maybe apple's not there yet..
    thx in advance

you might also want to leave some feedback for apple to add this feature....or they may be already doing it since they plan to release full length movies via itunes..or at least that's the rumor...
Also, maybe check out the other solutions such as mediacentral, centerstage, distantdvd, etc..
I read mediacentral works with video_ts folders and the apple remote....they seem to be more willing to listen to feedback since they want you to use their software..not apple!!
I just ran across this website as well...might be useful

  • Front Row & Video Podcast Play Count

I have one of the new Core Duo 20" iMacs. I've found that Front Row does something unexepected. When I watch a video podcast through Front Row, and I mean watch it to the end of the file, the play count in iTunes is not updated. I've checked, and the count is updated for music files and audio podcasts. This only seems to happen with video podcasts. Any else having this problem? Solutions?
I suspect it's happening because audio is probably played through iTunes, whereas the video is Quicktime.
    Thanks in advance,
    J

I don't haven't used Front Row to play movies or video - but the problem you are describing has been happening in both Quicktime and iTunes on my Mac, ever since I installed Leopard. There are a few things I've tried that work to get the video and audio back in sync - one is to pause the video, and to leave it paused for 5 or 10 minutes. When I come back and restart it, sometimes it will play normally. The other thing that I've tried is to actually shut down iTunes and restart it - for some reason that works a bit more consistently.
Another problem I have is less dire - and that is occasionally a video or movie will lose its audio altogether - when that happens the "fix" is to stop the video for a few seconds, then restart it. It usually works. Again, the operative word is usually. Unfortunately I haven't found a way to stop this from happening at all - which is what I'd prefer, but these fixes (and sometimes a combination of them) will get me through a movie. I'd love some guidance from the home office on this though! Anyone at Apple care to take a bite?

I recieved my 20" iMac today and am having the same issue.
    Specs:
As stock except with 256MB VRAM and 1GB RAM (factory installed).
    Ordered 25th Jan.
    Recieved 3rd Feb.
Problem appears with Front Row, Real Player, iCal and possibly others I haven't tried. I'm reluctant to install software and migrate data from my Mac mini because of this issue.
I've run the hardware test. Passed.
I've left the iMac unplugged for 30min.
I've reset the PRAM by unplugging the iMac, waiting 1min, then plugging it back in while holding the power button.
Nothing has worked. I haven't called Apple yet but I plan to.

  • Front Row video trailers

i've noticed that when when i'm watching movie trailers in front row the album art for the movie trailer is blurry and has a low resolution, lower than what it's suppossed to be. how do i make the image more clear?

You don't. Its just how they are pulled off the Internet. Some are at higher resolutions than others.

  • Posted this two other places that I shouldn't have. Front Row Video Issues.

Alrighty, so QuickTime has been giving me some issues with playback with some videos and I've found a player that has fixed this, and can play QuickTime files as well. My question is this, can I change the default FrontRow player from QuickTime to VLC Player?
I'm running the 7.1.6 version of QuickTime and the latest (I hope) version of Tiger, 10.4.10.
    Many thanks.

I'm trying to play .avi files, but with Xvid properties or whatever. I don't quite understand it. But I did try to add the recommended add-on from the QuickTime section of this site, and for whatever reason there is still no audio on these clips. I ended up messing everything up, moving folders and stuff that should not have been moves, a QuickTime folder did not exist in my library, and the folder that I thought held those add-ons I moves to the library to try to fix this problem. A wee bit frustrating, to say the least.

  • HDMI video through Front Row

I want to be able to watch my front row videos on my tv through the hdmi cable hooked up to my macbook pro, but all I get when I start to play it is a black screen and the sound from the movie.
How do I get video on my tv?

    Hi,
I was just hooking up my laptop the same way and got my desktop screen with nothing on it. I put in the movie and could not see anything. For some reason I moved my mouse off the left side of the computer screen and noticed it showed up on the TV. I held it down and pulled it back to the right and my video came sliding onto the TV screen. In other words, it was playing off to the side of my TV screen. I just pulled it into view. Perhaps this is done so you can watch a movie and use the laptop at the same time..
I hope this is helpful. Perhaps someone has a more precise solution or more accurate description.

  • Front Row displays a video name thats been deleted...

I've deleted a movie on my mac, I go into Front Row>Videos>Movies and the file name is still there, anyone had the same problem or does anyone know how to get rid of this?
    Thanks,
    Andy

Oh man... well I backed up my iTunes Library.xml file and the iTunes Music Library.xml file and deleted them, sure enough, the "phantom videos" went away but all my playlist where gone. When I went to restore the xml files I did something wrong and didn't get them back so I went to an older backup (thank God for external USB drives) and pulled that those xml files and after a few minutes of cleaning up the changes I had made since that back up there are now many more "phantom videos' in my FR Movies Section.
Is there a way to back up playlists and and restore them without the "Phantom videos" coming back as well?

  • Forcing Front Row into Rosetta (For 3ivx and a52 codecs)

I've been very happy with my Mac Mini so far and my only complaint is that Front Row will not allow me to play movies encoded with 3ivx and a 52 codecs. I have found a way to get them to work in Quicktime (by forcing it into Rosetta) and I have figured out how to force Front Row into Rosetta but it still doesn't work. One of the other forums I consulted suggested that the problem is that Front Row uses Itunes with embedded Quicktime movies. I was hoping that it would be as simple as forcing Itunes to open with Rosetta but I have not been able to figure out how to do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Please do not point me to the Apple file telling you how to force apps into rosetta. It does not work for Itunes.
    Thanks!
    G

Well you may want to convert the said videos and audio files into a format Front Row does support. http://www.versiontracker.com/ and http://www.macupdate.com/ list many solutions for playing and working with those file formats.
I see you have already found the Front Row forum:

Maybe some people there may have additional answers if you can't find them in this one.
