  • Front Row in Leopard 'sees' DVD Video TS but wont play t ;-/

Ok this was a surprise but Front Row now sees Video TS folders, correctly then says opening DVD player then after a minute or so says there is an error press play/pause to exit Front Row...
So nearly there... anyoone else getting it to play Video_TS ?
or is this a not there yet feature...

This is great! I have an external hard drive with all my ripped VIDEO_TS folders on it. It is connected to my Airport Extreme and on the network via Airdisk for sharing. The disk is called "DVDz". I made an alias of the disk and placed it in my Movies folder. For each movie on your disk, first create a folder with the name of the movie, e.g. "Gladiator". In the "Gladiator" movie folder, place a jpeg of the movie cover named "Cover" and a folder called "DVD". In that that "DVD" folder, place the VIDEO_TS folder. If you nest the folders in this fashion, the new Front Row in Leopard will browse your movies and show the cover. Hook up to a projector and 5.1 sound system and you have your Apple HTPC solution. I am loving this! Thanks for listening, Apple!

  • Airport Express, Front Row, and Leopard - any expected fix date?

I've found a bunch of articles that discuss the problem of Front Row under Leopard not working with remote speakers via Airport Express. This worked well for everyone under Tiger.
I haven't found any projected fix dates from Apple ... any insight into this? Or is it common for Apple to leave these types of feature drops out there with no fix dates or realistic workarounds? I will say I have had very few problems with Apple gear, and I am a fan, but this problem impacts the major reason I put this multi-airport setup in place ...

  • New front row in leopard ...

I've upgrade my tiger into leopard, now i have a new front row, very nice, but in DVD playback I prefer the time line of tiger because every time i stop the film i can seen the time remaing to the end, and biggest font was better for looking the Film from my bed !

rentals and a new rental-focused gui seem to be the only update right? I am not seeing anything leading me to believe that the appletv experience is going to be expanded for those who rip their own movies and use it that way.
verdict is still out on the 5.1 pass thru as well. how well will it work for people who do their own encoding and how many of the "some" hd movies will include it?

  • Reinstall Front Row on Leopard?

Front row would not work for me anymore for some reason, a black screen would come up for about 2 seconds and then disappear. So I trashed it using AppZapper. I had planned on reinstalling it from the Leopard DVD, but it is not an app available to install in the optional install folder (which it should be). And when I tried just installing it via the Leopard installer I was told that I'd need to wipe my drive for Leopard to go any further. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Never mind, I still had all associated files for it in my Trash so out of desperation I just moved the app to the desktop. It worked. Not sure what happened, but at least I don't have to waste anyone's time.

  • Airport Express, Airtunes, and Front Row in Leopard

Ever since I upgraded to Leopard it seems that I can no longer play music through Front Row through my speakers plugged into my Airport Express. Has anyone else noticed this? Or is there something I'm doing wrong.

  • Apple TV and Leopard's Front Row 2

Anyone using an AppleTV with Leopard yet? From what I understand, the new Front Row interface in Leopard is basically the aTV, and the new FR natively plays VIDEO_TS folders... Can we hope for the same in aTV?

Front Row in Leopard is actually much better for viewing Photos than an Apple TV, because it shows you your iPhoto 08 Events, complete with a number in brackets showing how many photos are in that Event.

  • Front Row auto launches on login

Now why would that be? About 4-5 seconds after logging in my user, Leopard auto launches Front Row. Leopard is choosy in this regard, as it does not extend the same 'courtesy' for my wife's account or that of the sysadmin.
Anyone else seen this oddity and got a way out of it?
    Cheers,
    Nige.

Don't just uncheck the box next to the name of the program. Click on the program to select it, and then click on the - (minus) button below the list of programs to actually remove the program from your startup list.
It doesn't remove the program from the computer, just the startup list for that account. I use the + button to add programs like AddressBook, Mail, and iCal to my user account so that they automatically launch when I log in. You are just trying to remove a program from that list totally.

  • Photo Features On Apple TV, Not As Good As Front Row

    Hi,
Does anyone know why the Photo features of the Apple TV aren't as good as Front Row in Leopard? Front Row does quite a few things that I wish my Apple TV did. Most importantly, it shows iPhoto Events along with item counts. It also shows Folders you've created in iPhoto to contain Albums and Smart Albums. Why aren't these features on the Apple TV? The software is SO similar, it's such a shame.

Yes I'd agree here, I believe  saw the tv's main role as playing itunes video content, since this video content has not materialised as everyone thought it would I'm guessin'  are a little disappointed with overall sales.
However I also believe they have overlooked the fact that many see other qualities in the tv (myself it's home video and photos and of late tv shows I've recorded with my elgato) and for a not inconsiderable number of people the tv already does what they want. It is indeed a pity some of these features have not been enhanced in almost 12 months since release.

  • Front Row: no Audio in slideshows?

I made a slideshow in iPhoto and connected it with some music.
    It worked fine in iPhoto.
Using Front Row I couldn't present the show, because there was no sound!
Support told me that in the new Front Row of Leopard sound is not supported for slideshows!!???
    Can that be true?
Did someone make the same experience?
Is it possible to get the old Front Row back?

Nonsense, no problem here with the sound of a slideshow
I don't know about the people employed for support any more. Somebody else on this forum was told some similar fib by this so-called support. He was told that his Powerbook couldn't read dual-layer DVD's, which is absolute nonsense, as is your answer about Front Rows sound.
Is this Apple support you are talking about?

  • Two versions of Front Row?

I just noticed using System Profiler that there are two versions of Front Row on my iMac.
Version 1.0 is located in /Applications
Version 2.1.6 is located in /System/Library/CoreServices/
Double-clicking either one brings up versions 2.1.6.
    Does all this sound correct?
I don't use Front Row all that much, but I don't want an extra app hanging around on my hard drive either.

Yes, that's normal. The version 1.0 application in your Applications folder is really just a handy shortcut to the real application that lives buried in your System folder. When Apple introduced Front Row in Leopard for all Macs, even those without an Apple remote, I believe they were giving those users a more direct way of launching Front Row. If you want, you can delete the application in your Applications folder and you can still open Front Row with the keyboard or Apple remote. However, since it takes up less than half of one megabyte, I don't think you have to worry about it hanging around and filling-up your hard drive!

  • Is Front Row multi Region?

I have just got Front Row for my PowerBook and put one of my movie DVD's in and front row played it without asking me what region I would like to choose, As I have lived in the US, the UK and Australia I have DVD's from 3 different regions which is why in the past I have not used iDVD.
Can I start using front row for all my DVD's?
For a heads up I usually watch DVD's through my computer using VLC
    Any info would be great.

I ripped my relatively few USA and UK out of region DVDs to my hard drive using Mac the Ripper, which removes the region coding. There isn't any point in copying a commercial DVD via a DVD burner, since almost every cheap stand alone DVD Player will play any region without protest. So you only need a ripped region free copy on hard drive to play on the Mac.
Looks like Front Row on Leopard is happy enough playing an in region DVD from the actual DVD. For the ripped Video_TS files of a DVD, I found you had to put the folders into your ~/Movies folder (or make an alias to the (shared) folder they are really in). I believe you can also put the ripped DVD version on an external drive, and again use the alias trick, but haven't tried that as yet.
Still not sure how you persuade Front Row to use AirTunes to send the audio to an external sound system. But VLC doesn't do that either.

  • Is Front Row part of the 'Bundled Software'?

With the Leopard update disk I got when purchasing my Mac Mini in February, is there an option to reinstall just the bundled software, without being forced to reinstall the entire OS?. Is Front Row part of that bundled software package?

    Angloswede wrote:

bundled software means ilife ( iphoto, imovie, garage band, iweb and idvd). Is this what you are talking about? ilife is not part of leopard so it wouldn't be on the leopard upgrade DVD. if you want to reinstall it you need either a separate ilife DVd if you bought it or the original Tiger install disks that came with the computer. Insert the tiger disk, open it in finder and double-click on 'install bundled software only". this will reinstall ilife.
Is Front Row part of that bundled software package?
no. Front Row is part of the OS itself. you can reinstall Front Row fromthe leopard install DVD using [Pacifist|http://www.charlessoft.com>.

  • Disabling Energy Saving Whilst in Front Row?

    Hey Guys and Girls,
I have noticed that when playing music through Front Row in Leopard that it still utilizes the energy saving methods so will go to sleep after my set period of time, It only does this in Music as it will play DVD's with no interruption. Is there anyway to disable energy saving methods when in front row so that it will not go to sleep until i am back onto the main window?
    Many Thanks in Advance,
    Kris

Kris - Have you checked this thread? Sounds similar to your issues with Energy Saver prefs off and Front Row putting the display to sleep in Leopard:

  • VIDEO_TS meta data for Front Row?

Front Row in Leopard supports playing VIDEO_TS folders. You can also add cover art by saving a file as preview.jpg in the parent directory. The folder structure would be like the following.
/Users/fred/Movies/The Day the Earth Stood Still/VIDEO_TS/
/Users/fred/Movies/The Day the Earth Stood Still/preview.jpg
    /Users/fred/Movies/Cloverfield/VIDEO_TS/
    /Users/fred/Movies/Cloverfield/preview.jpg
    /Users/fred/Movies/Attack of the Killer Tomatoes/VIDEO_TS/
    /Users/fred/Movies/Attack of the Killer Tomatoes/preview.jpg
This works great, however I was wondering if there is any equivalent method for adding meta-data to VIDEO_TS folders. Obviously you cannot do the normal process of storing it as MPEG4 tags in an MPEG4 video file via iTunes. If it was possible I would presume the most logical method would be to store an XML file in each folder something like this.
/Users/fred/Movies/The Day the Earth Stood Still/VIDEO_TS/
/Users/fred/Movies/The Day the Earth Stood Still/preview.jpg
/Users/fred/Movies/The Day the Earth Stood Still/metadata.xml
    /Users/fred/Movies/Cloverfield/VIDEO_TS/
    /Users/fred/Movies/Cloverfield/preview.jpg
    /Users/fred/Movies/Cloverfield/metadata.xml
    /Users/fred/Movies/Attack of the Killer Tomatoes/VIDEO_TS/
    /Users/fred/Movies/Attack of the Killer Tomatoes/preview.jpg
    /Users/fred/Movies/Attack of the Killer Tomatoes/metadata.xml
I suspect that unfortunately this is not currently possible but does anyone know for certain?

Unfortunately it looks like currently there is no way to do it and Apple have been sorely neglecting Front Row (it has fallen well behind even the Apple TV which is far from state of the art). As Snow Leopard is concentrating on performance enhancements rather than new features, I do not hold out hope for any significant change for well over a year.
Note: Apple TV is not necessarily a bad product, indeed I bought one for my parents, it is merely like Front Row extremely limited, too limited for many people which is why it sales are (allegedly) so poor. I think the comment raised by more than one pundit that it fails to replace a box under your TV is an extremely important one. It does not replace your DVD player (there are still comparatively few movies on the iTunes store - assuming you are in a country which has any at all), the movies are too expensive compared to DVDs and do not offer either as good quality or as many features. It also fails to replace a video recorder or these days a DVR since it has no TV capabilities. As such it has to be treated as an additional box if at all, and as an additional box it increases the spaghetti factor and thus fails the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) even if it is by far the easiest to use product.
I have therefore switched to using Plex which is a Mac version of XBMC. Plex allows you to use VIDEO_TS folders just like Front Row (indeed the same folders can be used in both), but it does have a built-in 'library' which stores meta-data and artwork for these VIDEO_TS folders and any other videos you might have. It uses plugins called 'scrapers' to search sites like http://www.imdb.com for metadata about the movies, I have even written a 'scraper' to search Amazon for those few DVDs not listed on IMDB.
    See http://www.plexapp.com
Since Plex does an excellent job handling VIDEO_TS (i.e. DVDs) it can 'replace' a box - the DVD player and also means the kiddies do not destroy your fragile discs.
PS. Horror of horrors, even Microsoft Media Center is 'better' than Front Row. This is practically the only category Microsoft has actually genuinely earned first place in rather than cheating/bribing/stealing/buying its way to.
