Front row w/ remote

so will the remote that comes with the new intels only work in front row? for example, lets say i went to put a DVD into one of the new intel mac minis and have DVD Player automatically launch .. will the remote not work straight from DVD player? or iTunes? though i'm sure it's nice at times, i'd hate to always have to go into the Front Row front-end to use the thing.

Yes the remote will work with some other applications if they are front most. Here are the ones I know of:
DVD Player will handle menu navigation, play/pause and chapter advance.
QuickTime Player will allow you to play/pause and do chapters.
iPhoto will respond to left/right arrow commands to change album selections. Play/Pause will start a slide show but you can't get out of one until it finishes.
iTunes will respond to left/right arrow commands to change current track and Play/Pause will start/stop the song.
Keynote will allow you to advance to next slide and go to previous slide.

  • Using Front Row with remote control?

    Hi,
Can anyone please advise if I can activate Front Row using the remote control in OSX Server?
Before I upgrade from OSX 10.4 to 10.5 Server, the remote control was working fine. I believe OSX Server may have disabled it? Is there anyway to enable it?
    Many Thanks!

Hmm.. found it under Security setting...
    Thanks !

  • Good internet applications that stream TV and integrate w/ front row?

I have an HDMI cable for my laptop, which lets me view content from my laptop on my TV. I'd like to start watching TV that's streamed from the laptop, but I don't want it to be a clunky user experience. Does anyone know of a good app. which allows easy watching of TV (news esp. CNN, etc. and preferably streamed) and a good user interface. It would also be sweet to integrate w/ front row so I can use the apple remote and not need to sit over my laptop.
I'm kind of new to this arena, so any advise/tips would be awesome!
    Thanks!

I have been having a different problem. When I watch a DVD in Front Row, the remote works fine on the initial DVD menu, but if I select the "bonus material", the remote won't work right on that menu. I can't move the cursor around. If I press up or down it reverts to controlling the volume, and left/right just bring up the progress bar. I have tried this with several different DVD's.

  • Use front row to control airtunes volume

is there any way to use front row (and remote) to control volume on external airtunes speakers instead of system volume? i understand how to select them, just want to know how to do volumes. thanks.

You're talking about using the volume slider within iTunes? Or using the remote to actually control the speakers?
If the former, than try the App called iRedLite. It lets you remap the remote's inputs to different functions.
If you're familiar with AppleScript you can make the up and down buttons control the volume slider.
Open Script Editor, then open the iTunes Dictionary. Find the "volume up" and "volume down" and use those in iRedLite.
This should work, hope I helped.

  • Front Row is unusable in Leopard

I knew I should've waited to upgrade until 10.5.2. I've been using OS X since 10.1 and every upgrade is loaded with problems. So, against my better judgement, I decided to upgrade right away again. After doing so, I find Front Row to be completely unusable. Here's the issues:
1.) On my iMac, when running Front Row the machine keeps going to sleep every 15 seconds or so. It sleeps for less than a second, but needless to say it makes watching video useless. When I say it goes to sleep, what I'm seeing is the screen go black and the light on the front pulsates.
2.) If I use my MacBook, also running Leopard, to connect to my iMac's library over Front Row, it'll be usable for a while and then it freezes. It takes several minutes for my MacBook to become usable and then I find that the internet connection on my iMac is gone. I only lose my internet connection when connecting from another machine through Front Row.
3.) I don't know who thought this was a good idea, and I was hoping they'd fix this on the Apple TV, but now my TV series have all their seasons lumped together into one big frickin' list!!! This is absolutely stupid. I know I can just change the series name to include the season number, but then the list of TV series gets huge. You'd think being 2 1/2 years in development they would've caught something dumb like this.
Anyone else experiencing the same issues?
    Thanks

  • Remote for front row

I just upgraded to Leopard and was checking out Front Row. I can use the arrow keys to navigate but since I am on a Powerbook I have no remote or sensor to pickup one. I am curious if there are third-party remotes available for older Macs. I have an EyeTV Hybrid which came with a remote. Is it possible to use something like this with Front Row?

I too have a Powerbook running Frontrow and I just bought this off eBay for cheap. http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/errf1/ this is a remote made by Keyspan for Frontrow.

  • How can I use apple remote with Mountain Lion? Any Front Row alternative?

    Hi All,
I recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
All great except for my Apple Remote control.
Before, I could effectively control my iMac media with Apple Remote by using Front Row (music, photos, videos, good integration with iTunes and iPhoto).
Now, as I understand, Front Row is expired.
So, my Apple remote still works but with very limited options (just music, forward, backward and volume), and it's a real pity.
Any of you Guys know how to restore Front Row?
Otherwise maybe suggest an alternative (sth similar, should allow iMac media control by Apple Remote)?
So far I tried to restore all Front Row files by a Time Capsule Snow Leopard backup (as indicatred on some other Communities).
To restore was easy, but then, no way to launch it.
    Any advice will help!
    Thanks in advance/all the best.
    Marco

Thanks Klaus1 for your prompt answer, although I went again through a dated discussion.
I also got the feeling that somehow they want to push Apple TV..
But, respectfully speaking towards our Friends at Apple, is it fair to promise what you don't deliver?
I have choosen apple because I percive it's different.
    At currently published link: http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC377Z/A/apple-remote
    they do promote the following:
    Apple Remote with Mac
The Apple Remote gives you total command of your music, photos, videos and DVDs from anywhere in the room. It works with Front Row - a menu-based, full-screen interface - to make accessing the digital content on your Mac as simple as navigating your iPod. When you press the Menu button, your desktop fades and the sleek, Front Row interface takes its place, to give you control over your music in iTunes, your photos in iPhoto, the videos in your Videos folder and your DVDs. Turn up the volume. Shuffle. Skip to the next chapter on your DVD. Play a slide show, a home video that you made in iMovie, even a film trailer.
Compatible with Apple products introduced in 2005 or later that have a built-in infrared (IR) receiver. Not compatible with MacBook Pro with Retina display.
Cost for this is 15£ (19€).
Now, I have iMac and Mac Book Pro (no retina display) both with Mountain Lion installed, and I understand both of them are not compatible with Front Row.
Actually I adore apple tv and I got 2 at home nicely working on 2 different TVs.
So I accomplished twice their wish of selling this product to me.
Why shall they deceive me (and many others, as I read) by killing a still promised service?
Should I read all forums before buying a trusted-brand-product like apple, to ensure that id does what declared?
Don't get me wrong, I'm an enthusiast user of the whole apple family, since many years, and still I am.
Just politely complaining for this decision, which creates to Many an easy avoidable disservice.
    Cheers
    Marco

  • Front Row without Apple Remote

  • Universal Dock, Apple Remote, non-Front Row Macs

I know it's possible, using a third-party workaround, to install Front Row on older Macs that don't have the infrared sensor built-in, that's not a problem.
What I want to know is if it's possible — by connecting the USB Universal iPod Dock with Infrared Sensor — to control these older Macs using the Apple Remote Control? Are there any third-party apps or plugins which will let you use the Universal Dock to launch Front Row on these non-infrared Macs?

One IR receiver that works with the Mac Pro is from Twisted Melon, Manta TR1. As you have discovered the Mac pro does not include any sort of IR and the iPod dock with IR does not work. The Manta TR1 works flawlessly with my Mac Pro.

  • Upgrade to Snow Leopard from Tiger - Front Row wont respond to remote?

    Hi,
I have recently upgraded to Snow Leopard from Tiger. I thought I'd better get with it!.
I use front row a fair amount as the iMac is used for multimedia mostly.
However, the computer doesn't respond when I press the menu button on the remote, even when I get really close.
I have check the security settings but they are almost all shaded out. The remote is not paired and the setting state that any remote can be used. However, when the security pane is open the menu button works and opens front row?
It might be irrelevant but I use eye diversity with a remote. I also have B&W speakers with a remote. However, it all worked fine on Tiger.
Having to go onto the iMac to open Front Row sort of spoils the point of having a remote.
Has anyone got any ideas on how to fix this issue?
    Many thanks.
    Andy

    Hi Carolyn,
Thanks for your input. It seems obvious. Obviously one of those Mac things I hadn't picked up on yet.
Unfortunately the remote still wouldn't pair. I pressed next and menu for ages as instructed but nothing?
I have messed around a bit more and it appears that Front Row works when I quit Eye Diversity TV. The iMac appears slow to open applications with Snow Leopard compared to Tiger, especially after waking. Do you know whether this is normal?
I'll try and raise the issue with EyeTV but clearly something odd is going on. I read a comment that it was best to format the iMac before installing Snow Leopard. I'm just a bit worried about losing the data and programmes I already have on the iMac.
    Many thanks.

  • Possible to use both Front Row AND Media Central with same Apple Remote?

    Dear Fellow Mac Users,
I have just got a copy of Media Central as i want to use it to view movie files with due to its great codec support. however due to its slightly sluggish and cumbersome design i'd like to continue to use front row for my itunes and dvd needs. whatsmore i'd like to be able to command both programs when i want them using my apple remote. is this possible?
    Tim

Yes. I do this right now - mainly using Media Central, and switching to Front Row if I have .mkv files to watch.
What I do is since you hit "Menu" to load Front Row, I just went into MediaCentral's preferences and had "Play" launch MediaCentral. Once you are in one, it 'grabs' the remote commands, so you shouldn't have to worry about it loading the other program.

  • My remote wont bring up Front Row

The remote was working beautifully last week, and then today it won't bring up Front Row when I pres the Menu button. It will raise and lower the volume, just not start Front Row. The computer and remote are less than a month old. Any sugesstions??
    Thanks.

It could be that the computer is doing other tasks therefore the remote is not responding, because the computer can not multitask quickly (unless it is a core duo processor). Another thing is that the remote was damaged or defected in some way or the battery is low (in that case, get it replaced). Also try pressing the menu button 2 or 3 times and try to do it when the computer is not buisy.

  • Change default Remote settings to open a different app than Front Row?

    Hello!
Forgive me if this is not the right board for this post, but I'm not sure where it should go exactly - this seemed best.
I have a fairly new MacBook Pro running Leopard, a rather large video library on an external drive, and a 24" display attached. I've been using Front Row to view these files, but have run into several file types that play back perfectly fine in Quicktime, but not Front Row (such as MKVs...), even with Perian. I discovered a solution however - Plex - which is what amounts to a much more feature rich, third-party version of Front Row. After some use, I've discovered that for my setup, it's a much better way to view things. It's still a beta, but it works fine on my system.
What I'd love to do, however, is to reconfigure the included Apple Remote so that when I press the menu button, it opens Plex instead of Front Row. Is this possible? Apple certainly doesn't seem to have included an easy way of this.
    Thanks,
    -Dan

This little piece of software will do what you want:

I use it just to enable my older mini to use an Apple Remote and it works well.

  • Cant Stop ATV Remote Activating Front Row Despite Unpairing

I thought i had this cracked, but apparently not. Whenever i use my Apple TV2 remote it activates Front Row on my MacBook Pro which has my external Itunes library connected to it.
I did un-pair the ATV2 remote via its settings, and also in iTunes devices asked it to "forget all remotes", but still the problem remains, and its driving me absolutely nuts!
Itunes insists no remotes are paired with it, despite the fact both ATV2 remote and the White Remote that came with the MacBook Pro still activates Front Row?
Has anyone else had this problem, and have they resolved it?
    Thanks

this does not work in my experience, pairing a remote implies to me that only that remote will work with that device ,but when i pull out another apple remote it will also work with my mac mini it sees them both as the same and so does my apple tv , there is no way to fix this as far as i can tell. i use remote buddy to make better use of my mac mini and i have to turn my apple tv around so it wont pick up the signal and when i wont to use my apple tv i have to get up and turn it around so it can pick up the signal and i have to block the eye on the mini .the mac mini should offer the same UI as the apple tv or a better one in my opionon that way i would not need the apple tv in the same room. is there a bluetooth remote out there?
