Front Row won't load....

Whenever I try to start Front Row (whether double-clicking the item in the Applications folder, or using the Remote), the screen fades to black like FR is about to start, but then goes right back to my desktop.
My MacBook Pro (and it's included remote ) are barely a week old.
Any ideas or suggestions, gang?

There shouldn't be any conflicts. Have you tried creating a new user yet? If the same thing happens to a different user, then you have a system-wide or hardware conflict. If the new user is okay, then the trouble is likely related to one (or more) of your user's preference files.

  • Front Row crashes when loading DVD

Hey, I hope someone can help with this, I am trying to use front row to play a DVD, but after a short while front row closes. Now, as soon as i tell it to play the DVD, when it tries to load it, it just turns off. There is no unexpected closure error message or option to report or anything, it just acts like I closed it. And help or info is appreciated, thanks.

I've actually been having the same problem.
First of all, my DVD player constantly takes forever to load a DVD and/or spits it out; then more recently, Front Row without fail will crash when a DVD ends. Even worse, lately, it won't even play the DVD after repeated attempts to start it.
It's extremely annoying and I can't figure out what to do.

  • Front Row refusing to load trailers

I've never had a problem with front row, but for the first time in a few weeks I thought i'd browse the trailers only to find that front row just stalled on the "loading theatrical trailer" screen.
Itunes movie and tv show trailers load without issue and my internet connection is confirmed as working and also acknowledged by front row.
    Any suggestions warmly received.

Nice to know at least I'm not the only one. Noticing the problem coincided with a system reinstall and a router change so I was concerned it was one of these factors which may have contributed. Despite multiple rounds of troubleshooting I cannot seem to find the route of the problem.
Its worth noting as well that the trailers are streaming perfectly from the apple web site and the network traffic generated from frontrow seems wholly unremarkable.
Thanks for the confirmation that this is a problem

  • Front Row won't play playlist

I've worked with Apple Technicians on 3 different occasions and we have done everything to try and fix this problem. I have 2 iMacs ICD that you can't play playlists on iTunes using Front Row. We've re-loaded the music, re-loaded iTunes from scratch, thrown away prefrences, reloaded the system software using the Apple DVD's. Has anyone else had this problem? Apple seems to be stumped and so am I. Everything else in Front Row seems to work fine. I can also play songs individually through Front Row with no problem, just not the playlist's.
    HELP?

My 19 yr old son was thinking outside the box and told me to select all the songs in the Library to see if Front Row would play the playlists then . . . it worked. I feel like a fool, but not too bad because Apple Techs didn't think of that either.

  • Front Row Won't Play Slideshow Music (iTunes)

I created a slideshow in iPhoto and selected an iTunes playlist as my music source. When I play the slideshow from Front Row the music does not play. However, if I play a photo event from Front Row the default music does play. Why won't my slideshow play the music?
    Please advise.

Front Row in Mac OS X 10.5.x has been broken the whole time. It used to work fine in Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger). Front Row will not play an iTunes playlist during a slideshow if the playlist contains more than one song. You can use a playlist that only has one song in it, but then you might as well just choose a single song instead of a playlist! I would suggest you send Apple some Mac OS X feedback:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
For what it's worth, iPhoto seems to work fine with slideshows and iTunes playlists with more than one song.

  • Front Row won't play .mp4 files

I just recently started using Front Row and, for some reason, it won't play .mp4 files. The said files are in my Movie folder and show up in Front Row's "Movies" menu, but when I try to play them it says "Selected video could not be played, format was not recognized."
    Please help!!

iTunes only supports MP4s encoded using the Main Profile, but many MP4s that you can download from the web are encoded using High Profile. These need to be converted.
You can use an app like VideoSpec or MediaInfo to list the encoding characteristics of your MP4s.

  • Front Row won't play widescren

I am using front rown on my intel mac.
My movies are in m4v format and play in widescreen in quicktime. However, they won't play in widescreen in Front Row.
Is there a way to fix this?
My thanks for any help that folks could provide.

I am having the same issue. I checked the format of the movie and it is a type the should be supported but whenever it plays I get the audio but the screen stays black for the duration of the movie. Hopefully there is a fix.

  • Front Row won't work in my user account

So I have followed the threads about non-working Front Row. Mine worked at 1st instal, but when I loaded a a bunch of MP3s into iTunes and then went to Front Row it spat the dummy.
I did as one poster suggested, made another user account; logged in, and Front Row worked immediately. Going back to me as the user, it wouldn't work.
As I understand it, this behaviour points to a preference file problem (?). If so, how does one correct the file problems (editing, delete etc).
I did an archive and instal - same problem
I did an erase and instal - same problem
I trashed the 1.3 update and attempted to re-instal it thru Software Update - but it didn't show as available, altho other software appeared.
From all this, can anyone give me some advice on what I do now? Many thanks for an information.

    An update for anyone viewing.
I used the Apple-Esc combination from the keyboard and Front Row worked! But only once.
I came across a topic that suggested "pairing" the remote to my computer by aiming the remote at the Apple logo on my machine, 3-4" away, and pressing the Menu and Fast Forward buttons simultaneously. And that worked! And its continuing to work!
Now, after I'm finished my session and I get back on my machine again - the trick is for Front Row to continue working.
Hope these hints help anyone who might have my problem.

  • Front Row won't work at all

Before the latest update of "Keychain and Login" my Front Row app would work partially
with blanking out in the slideshows and movies, However now it won't work at all.
Is there a fix in the works for this problem?
    Dave

    Figured it out...
The "Front Row" settings were set for a screensaver, That's why the monitor kept blanking out,
I've turned off the screensaver in the settings and "Front Row" works fine now.
There is no screensaver image chosen, That's why the screen kept going blank or even off.

  • Front Row won't read most of the music in iTunes

When I go to my iTunes folder playlists from the desk top I get everything that I expect to see there. When I open with the remote, almost everything I see, for every playlist, says it can "shuffle songs" but there are no individual songs listed.
This applies to music bought from the Apple store and CDs I have copied to iTunes. I have played with preferences to no avail.
This is a new MacBook Pro with all the software updates available as of last night.
Advice welcome ... otherwise this Front Row / remote is a silly piece of add on equipment that isn't worth anything.

sorry for the slow reply, but what format are the songs in? mp3? AAC?
i would suggest converting to AAC if it is in anything other than these 2 (if it is in apple lossless, its fine....)

  • Front Row won't play movie trailers and previews

When I try to access the apple movie/Tv trailers through front row I get the message:
"the selected video could not be played. The format was not recognized"
Front Row and iTunes are both updated to the latest version-
My Firewall's set to allow all incoming connections-
The trailers work fine in iTunes
Any ideas what could be causing this and what I can do about it?

I am also experiencing this problem. When I select the Trailer I want to watch, it gives my the same error. Both iTunes and Front Row are updated to the latest version. If it helps, I recently did a complete re-install of my system. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help us here!

  • Front Row won't launch iPhoto, no black menu

I just got my new Intel iMac. All works great but not the Front Row's photo show. When I press Photos on the rotating desktop, the menu just fades and shows Desktop. No error message, just desktop.
I deleted iPhoto, re-installed it (v. 6.0). Does not work. I updated it and Front Row to the latest versions, not working. I repaired permissions. Does not help.
If I manually open iPhoto, I can then launch the slideshow by using remote. And iPhoto works fine by itself. Problem seems to be that Front Row cannot launch the black FR menu and/or iPhoto.
I'd like to be able to launch the slideshow by only using remote as it is meant to be...
    Any help appreciated!

I solved it finally myself: I deleted my old photo files and photo albums from iPhoto. Now FR works nicely. Seems that the migrated photo libraries from iPhoto 4 did not fare well with iPhoto 6+Front Row.
Weirdly, this rather straightforward solution is not suggested anywhere...

  • Front Row won't Launch

My computer is doing everything perfect, but not launching front row. I have no clues as to why. When I click and hold down over the front row icon in my doc the only options are "Show Front Row" and "Remove from Doc".
    Edit:
The "About this mac" will not open as well. I already tried a restart.

  • Front Row won't play Theatrical Trailers

When I try to play a theatrical trailer in Front Row on my iMac, I get the following error:
+The selected video could not be played. The format was not recognized.+
Only a few days ago it was working - can anyone help fix this?

Same here. Some work, some don't. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. I have a brand new iMac at work with SnowLeopard, while at home I have a slightly older iMac running Leopard. Last night I tried accessing some trailers at home and some worked, while the one next to it would not. Same thing also on Apple TV. It is infuriating and baffling. It is one of the nice things about Apple TV to be able to browse the trailers... but if they don't work it renders the thing useless.
