Front Row won't play .mp4 files

I just recently started using Front Row and, for some reason, it won't play .mp4 files. The said files are in my Movie folder and show up in Front Row's "Movies" menu, but when I try to play them it says "Selected video could not be played, format was not recognized."
Please help!!

iTunes only supports MP4s encoded using the Main Profile, but many MP4s that you can download from the web are encoded using High Profile. These need to be converted.
You can use an app like VideoSpec or MediaInfo to list the encoding characteristics of your MP4s.

  • Front Row Won't Play Slideshow Music (iTunes)

I created a slideshow in iPhoto and selected an iTunes playlist as my music source. When I play the slideshow from Front Row the music does not play. However, if I play a photo event from Front Row the default music does play. Why won't my slideshow play the music?
    Please advise.

Front Row in Mac OS X 10.5.x has been broken the whole time. It used to work fine in Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger). Front Row will not play an iTunes playlist during a slideshow if the playlist contains more than one song. You can use a playlist that only has one song in it, but then you might as well just choose a single song instead of a playlist! I would suggest you send Apple some Mac OS X feedback:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
For what it's worth, iPhoto seems to work fine with slideshows and iTunes playlists with more than one song.

  • Front Row won't play AC3

    hey folks
Really annoying, front row and quicktime, dont play any of my movie files that require a ac3 codec.
i have downloaded the intel codecs pack but still no joy
    has anyone else experienced this?
are there any recomended codecs out there
    many thanks

I was going to suggest the same codec. I can't remember which I'm actually using, but I know I had to try several betas a year or so back to find something that worked well, and it now works nicely. AC3 (Dolby digital) is not in the standard packs.
    So on another note:
What do you mean no pass through? Shortly I'll want to send audio through to my amp in dolby digital (using the mini TOSlink port). That includes DVD audio, digital TV and quicktime with AC3.
Apple seems to say that works.
"supporting encoded digital audio output (AC3 and DTS)"
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303376-en
EyeTV 2.2 also says it supports the TOSlink port.
Are you saying it doesn't? That is pretty important to me, so I'm very interested.

  • Front Row won't play widescren

I am using front rown on my intel mac.
My movies are in m4v format and play in widescreen in quicktime. However, they won't play in widescreen in Front Row.
Is there a way to fix this?
My thanks for any help that folks could provide.

I am having the same issue. I checked the format of the movie and it is a type the should be supported but whenever it plays I get the audio but the screen stays black for the duration of the movie. Hopefully there is a fix.

  • Front Row won't play movie trailers and previews

When I try to access the apple movie/Tv trailers through front row I get the message:
"the selected video could not be played. The format was not recognized"
Front Row and iTunes are both updated to the latest version-
My Firewall's set to allow all incoming connections-
The trailers work fine in iTunes
Any ideas what could be causing this and what I can do about it?

I am also experiencing this problem. When I select the Trailer I want to watch, it gives my the same error. Both iTunes and Front Row are updated to the latest version. If it helps, I recently did a complete re-install of my system. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help us here!

  • Front Row won't play Theatrical Trailers

When I try to play a theatrical trailer in Front Row on my iMac, I get the following error:
+The selected video could not be played. The format was not recognized.+
Only a few days ago it was working - can anyone help fix this?

Same here. Some work, some don't. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. I have a brand new iMac at work with SnowLeopard, while at home I have a slightly older iMac running Leopard. Last night I tried accessing some trailers at home and some worked, while the one next to it would not. Same thing also on Apple TV. It is infuriating and baffling. It is one of the nice things about Apple TV to be able to browse the trailers... but if they don't work it renders the thing useless.

  • Front row won't play any theme except the classic one

    Hey guys
I cannot get front row to play any other theme except the classic (ken burns) theme

Can you play those music in iTunes itself?

  • Front Row won't play playlist

I've worked with Apple Technicians on 3 different occasions and we have done everything to try and fix this problem. I have 2 iMacs ICD that you can't play playlists on iTunes using Front Row. We've re-loaded the music, re-loaded iTunes from scratch, thrown away prefrences, reloaded the system software using the Apple DVD's. Has anyone else had this problem? Apple seems to be stumped and so am I. Everything else in Front Row seems to work fine. I can also play songs individually through Front Row with no problem, just not the playlist's.
    HELP?

My 19 yr old son was thinking outside the box and told me to select all the songs in the Library to see if Front Row would play the playlists then . . . it worked. I feel like a fool, but not too bad because Apple Techs didn't think of that either.

  • My MP3 player won't play MP4 files.

What can I do to get the itunes songs I purchased off my hard drive and on my MP3 player in the MP3 format?

The songs sold in the iTunes music store are not mp3s, they are protected AACs (i.e. "mp4's"). They will not directly play in your player. To get them into mp3, use iTunes to burn the purchased tracks to an audio CD, and then import the tracks from the CD using iTunes. Before you import, make sure your preferences have your import format set to mp3.

  • Windows media won't play mp4, audio no video

I upgraded from a desktop to the HP TouchSmart 15 TS Notebook PC so that I would have all the functionality
of a new operating system that would work. Guess I was mistaken?!?!?! I have the same problem I had with my old crappy desk-top, MP4 videos still don't play on Windows 8.1???? I get audio but no video????? just a black screen?????

According to Microsoft support website, Windows Media Player still won't support MP4 files. Though we can make WMP play MP4 video by install some codec, sometime we still encounter can't play MP4 in Windows Media Player issue. MP4 is a container format which may contain multiple video and audio streams. And the video and audio stream can be encoded any of several ways. If the MP4 video or audio codec is not WMP installed codec supported one, Windows Media Player won't play MP4 video of this kind. In order to solve "Windows Media Player won't play MP4 files even when the appropriate codec is installed" and to successfully play any MP4 video in Windows Media Player, we had better convert MP4 to Windows Media Player more supported video format like WMV, AVI. • Can Front Row play mp4 files?

Topic, I haven't been able to find a way to do this. For the record (though I can't see how it is relevant), I have a week 36 build 1.83 MacBook (Core1Duo) with a 60 gig hard drive and 2 gigs of RAM with all software and firmware currently updated.
Front Row can't recognize the files, they don't even show up. I have put them in the default Movies folder and on the desktop.
    Help!

I just set up Front Row on my Mac Pro, purchased an IR receiver, and have Front Row working with my Apple Remote. However, none of my MP4 or M4V files show up in Front Row -- not even the TV shows purchased from the iTunes Music Store! It shows an AVI video in my Movies folder and a .mov video in iTunes, but if I "Convert [that .mov video] for iPod," the converted file doesn't show up.
How can I set things up so that I can both view these video files on my iPod and in Front Row? I had assumed that this would all just work, since all the videos are playable by iTunes and my iPod.

  • IMovie Won't Import MP4 Files

For some reason iMovie '11 won't let me import videos.  Specifically, I'm trying to add MP4 files that I copied to my hard drive from my GoPro HD 960.  For GoPro users, I used the R2 (720p) format.  They open properly in QuickTime and VLC but can't be imported into iMovie (or iPhoto).  When I select File-->Import-->Movies and browse to the directory where I saved all the .mp4 files on my hard drive, they're all greyed out.  And actually, it seems that just about no video files at all on my computer can be added (all greyed out)--even other MP4 files.
I downloaded MPEG Streamclip but that says "unrecognized file format" when I try opening the videos.  I also installed Perian and rebooted.
    In case it helps:
    - I have an Intel MacBook running OS X 10.6.8 with iLife '11
    - QuickTime info for the video format says "H.264, 1280 x 720, Millions; AAC, 2 channels, 48000 Hz"
    - VLC says "Stream 0 (Video) - Codec: avc1" and "Stream 1 (Audio) - Codec: mp4a"
Any ideas?  This is incredibly frustrating!

Why iMovie Won't Import MP4 Files?
Technically, iMovie does import MP4 video. However, iMovie only import MP4 files that are encoded with MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC data. And yet, MP4 is a video container format that may contain various audio and video codec (and sometimes even subtitle streams included). If the MP4 file is not encoded with iMovie support codec, iMovie will refuse to import this kind of MP4 video.
How to Solve Can't Import MP4 into iMovie?
In order to successfully import all kinds of MP4 files to iMovie, a recommended solution is to convert iMovie unrecognized MP4 to iMovie supported video format.
iDealshare VideoGo is just the right MP4 to iMovie Converter which can convert various MP4 to iMovie supported MPEG-4, MPEG-2, MOV or DV. Besides converting MP4 to iMovie, iDealshare VideoGo also helps to convert other video formats including AVI, WMV, MPEG, VOB, MOV, AVCHD, MTS, M2T, M2TS, TOD, MOD, XAVC, FLV, MKV, SWF, 3GP, MVI, ASF and etc to iMovie video format.

The latest n73 firmware supports the H.264/AVC codec and the DivX codec... I use this codec to convert my movies without problems...
Btw, the other 2 n73 phones that you used to play the video must have a new firmware, yours is too old!!
You mean the latest FW lets N73 to play DIVX video files without installing any 3rd party software like smartmovie?

  • Playing mp4 files on iPad

Hi All, this a desperate cry for help before I finally junk my new iPad: I am currently enrolled in an online program running on the Adobe Connect platform. The multimedia files (mp4, pdf etc) can not play on the iPad despite several attempts. Any explanation to this and suggestion on what to do?

You need an app to play those files....I am pretty sure. I play mp4 videos just fine on the app Goodplayer...the older version! The currently available Goodplayer app may not play mp4 files, since they had a dispute (exhorbitant fees) with Dolby, who banned their software use on Goodplayer and several other apps. I understand that there is an app available at the app store that has Dolby software, in that they collaborate with Dolby in some way. Be sure to check capabilities and limitations before you buy any such app. I don't know about pdf files.

  • Nokia n85 not playing MP4 files

    Hi,
I never used the video podcasts, well I just tried to use some nokia video podcasts and they were in MP4 format. To my surprise my phone says it can not play the format and so it just played it as the audio file. I was reading at GSMArena.com and looks like N85 does support MP4 files.
Can any one help me on this? How can I play MP4 files on my phone?
    Thanks,
    Harpreet

Well, podcasts are mainly encoded in AVC@640x360 or 480x320. N85 plays AVC only at 320x240 resolution or lower. It has nothing to do with the container, in this case .mp4.
