Front Row won't play playlist

I've worked with Apple Technicians on 3 different occasions and we have done everything to try and fix this problem. I have 2 iMacs ICD that you can't play playlists on iTunes using Front Row. We've re-loaded the music, re-loaded iTunes from scratch, thrown away prefrences, reloaded the system software using the Apple DVD's. Has anyone else had this problem? Apple seems to be stumped and so am I. Everything else in Front Row seems to work fine. I can also play songs individually through Front Row with no problem, just not the playlist's.
HELP?

My 19 yr old son was thinking outside the box and told me to select all the songs in the Library to see if Front Row would play the playlists then . . . it worked. I feel like a fool, but not too bad because Apple Techs didn't think of that either.

  • Front Row Won't Play Slideshow Music (iTunes)

I created a slideshow in iPhoto and selected an iTunes playlist as my music source. When I play the slideshow from Front Row the music does not play. However, if I play a photo event from Front Row the default music does play. Why won't my slideshow play the music?
    Please advise.

Front Row in Mac OS X 10.5.x has been broken the whole time. It used to work fine in Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger). Front Row will not play an iTunes playlist during a slideshow if the playlist contains more than one song. You can use a playlist that only has one song in it, but then you might as well just choose a single song instead of a playlist! I would suggest you send Apple some Mac OS X feedback:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
For what it's worth, iPhoto seems to work fine with slideshows and iTunes playlists with more than one song.

  • Front Row won't play .mp4 files

I just recently started using Front Row and, for some reason, it won't play .mp4 files. The said files are in my Movie folder and show up in Front Row's "Movies" menu, but when I try to play them it says "Selected video could not be played, format was not recognized."
    Please help!!

iTunes only supports MP4s encoded using the Main Profile, but many MP4s that you can download from the web are encoded using High Profile. These need to be converted.
You can use an app like VideoSpec or MediaInfo to list the encoding characteristics of your MP4s.

  • Front Row won't play widescren

I am using front rown on my intel mac.
My movies are in m4v format and play in widescreen in quicktime. However, they won't play in widescreen in Front Row.
Is there a way to fix this?
My thanks for any help that folks could provide.

I am having the same issue. I checked the format of the movie and it is a type the should be supported but whenever it plays I get the audio but the screen stays black for the duration of the movie. Hopefully there is a fix.

  • Front Row won't play movie trailers and previews

When I try to access the apple movie/Tv trailers through front row I get the message:
"the selected video could not be played. The format was not recognized"
Front Row and iTunes are both updated to the latest version-
My Firewall's set to allow all incoming connections-
The trailers work fine in iTunes
Any ideas what could be causing this and what I can do about it?

I am also experiencing this problem. When I select the Trailer I want to watch, it gives my the same error. Both iTunes and Front Row are updated to the latest version. If it helps, I recently did a complete re-install of my system. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help us here!

  • Front Row won't play Theatrical Trailers

When I try to play a theatrical trailer in Front Row on my iMac, I get the following error:
+The selected video could not be played. The format was not recognized.+
Only a few days ago it was working - can anyone help fix this?

Same here. Some work, some don't. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. I have a brand new iMac at work with SnowLeopard, while at home I have a slightly older iMac running Leopard. Last night I tried accessing some trailers at home and some worked, while the one next to it would not. Same thing also on Apple TV. It is infuriating and baffling. It is one of the nice things about Apple TV to be able to browse the trailers... but if they don't work it renders the thing useless.

  • Front row won't play any theme except the classic one

    Hey guys
I cannot get front row to play any other theme except the classic (ken burns) theme
I've tried setting a theme as default in iphoto and i've made a slideshow, but nothing worked
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Chris

Can you play those music in iTunes itself?

  • Front Row won't play AC3

    hey folks
Really annoying, front row and quicktime, dont play any of my movie files that require a ac3 codec.
i have downloaded the intel codecs pack but still no joy
    has anyone else experienced this?
are there any recomended codecs out there
    many thanks

I was going to suggest the same codec. I can't remember which I'm actually using, but I know I had to try several betas a year or so back to find something that worked well, and it now works nicely. AC3 (Dolby digital) is not in the standard packs.
    So on another note:
What do you mean no pass through? Shortly I'll want to send audio through to my amp in dolby digital (using the mini TOSlink port). That includes DVD audio, digital TV and quicktime with AC3.
Apple seems to say that works.
"supporting encoded digital audio output (AC3 and DTS)"
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303376-en
EyeTV 2.2 also says it supports the TOSlink port.
Are you saying it doesn't? That is pretty important to me, so I'm very interested.

  • Front row refuses to play playlists saying"a problem has occurred"

Just purchased a new MacBook Pro and
every time I go to music select playlists, choose any one of my 35 playlists, I then get "shuffle songs" (no other choice). I select shuffle songs and the I get "Aproblem has occurred"
Has anyone else come upon this problem and if so what is the answer.
Imac G5 Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

By selecting all songs in the playlist first before usuing
    front row.

  • Front Row won't read most of the music in iTunes

When I go to my iTunes folder playlists from the desk top I get everything that I expect to see there. When I open with the remote, almost everything I see, for every playlist, says it can "shuffle songs" but there are no individual songs listed.
This applies to music bought from the Apple store and CDs I have copied to iTunes. I have played with preferences to no avail.
This is a new MacBook Pro with all the software updates available as of last night.
Advice welcome ... otherwise this Front Row / remote is a silly piece of add on equipment that isn't worth anything.

sorry for the slow reply, but what format are the songs in? mp3? AAC?
i would suggest converting to AAC if it is in anything other than these 2 (if it is in apple lossless, its fine....)

  • Does your front row show the Applications playlist?

My Front Row has some bugs, I think.
Inside Music->Playlists, the following are listed but do not show their contents:
    Applications
    Library
    TV Shows
But Applications shouldn't be there and TV shows already shows up in the main front row menu.
As for Library, this is my entire iTunes library. does anyone have this issue:?

If your movies play with the QuickTime Player program outside of iPhoto, then Front Row will be able to show them. The "Movies" section of Front Row only looks inside your "Movies" folder in your home folder for files. If you make an alias from the iPhoto library of your movie file into the "Movies" folder, then Front Row should be able to see them and play them. Remember, if you drag an item (or some items) while holding down on the Apple and "option" keys (it may be "alt" on a non-North American keyboard), you will create an alias where you drop the items instead of moving them. That might help you move several of them or even the folder they're in to your "Movies" folder.

  • Front Row won't display station information of radio streams.

    Hi,
I love to use Front Row to listen to internet radio stations. While iTunes displays the station information correctly (mostly artist and title) Front Row only shows blank.
Does anybody know if it's possible to activate station information in Front Row? I'm using version 2.1.7.
    Thanks for your hints,
    Alex

Yes, you can add radio stations to a playlist. The station should then appear when you select that playlist. There's no built-in interface to find/play the radio stations directly in Front Row.
EDIT: I guess I haven't done this for a while. This used to work with Front Row 1.x in Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger). Now Front Row says there are no songs in that playlist. I may have to play around with that. I'm surprised it hasn't come up recently...

  • Front Row doesn't play nicely with MP4's

Friends, I have several MP4 music videos which were downloaded from YouTube. They play fine in Quicktime, and Quicklook opens them fine. I dragged them into iTunes mostly just to see If they would play there. They work fine. The problem is that when I open MUSIC in Front Row, the videos are shown as an available playlist, but when I try to open that playlist, Front Row tells me that there is no music in the files. I wonder if I'm asking FR to do something it just doesn't want to do, or perhaps I need to rename the file, or store them in another manner in iTunes. It's not really a big deal, just one of those things that makes ya go Hmmmm....
For what it's worth, my QT version is 7.6, iTunes is version 8 and FR has been updated to 2.1.7.
    I'll appreciate your insight.
    Thanks
    Jon

Yes, there are only three or four settings stored in there. The last module selected when you closed Front Row (Music, TV Shows, Podcasts, DVD, Photos, or Movies), the country your iTunes is set for (so Front Row can show the "top rated" items from the store) and whether or not you've turned on sound effects and/or the Front Row screen saver. No other preferences are stored there. All of the media-specific preferences are store in the application that controls that media (the DVD Player.app for the DVD settings, iTunes for the Music settings and iPhoto for the Photos settings).

  • Any way to get Front Row to show video playlists such as TV shows?

I can get AppleTV now to show the TV show playlists in iTunes as their own menu items. However, I can't seem to get Front Row in 10.6 to do the same thing.
I currently have iTunes 8.2.1 in 10.6.0. Is this something either upgrading to 10.6.1 or iTunes 9 will enable?

Front Row users have been waiting for this option since video playlists first appeared in iTunes quite some time ago. Unfortunately, I've never been able to make it work. Why Apple can't enable what seems like a simple options is beyond me. My iPod nano can do it but Front Row on my Mac can't. I'd advise you to send Apple some Mac OS X feedback since there's no specific form for Front Row itself:

  • Front Row refusing to play my iTunes store purchases!

This never happened before, but when I go to play songs on Front Row which I purchased from the store, it says my computer isn't authorised and to enable it by going to iTunes, clicking authorise and signing in to my account. I've done this several times, and even whilst clicking onto every song I purchased.
What makes it stranger, is if I open iTunes, start playing a song I purchased and then go to front row whilst it's still playing, and click 'now playing', it shows the song and artwork and the song continues playing as normal. Now that I'm in front row, if I browse to that song and try to play it, it comes up with that message.
    What is going on?!

    James,
You may see my previous posts. I had the self same problem until I installed 10.4.9, but that also included the Front Row 1.3 update. Did you include that in your update? That may be the solution as my problem has now been resolved. Also if you look up and down this forum there are a number of threads with solutions such as deleting the .plist files. It seemed to work for others, but not for me.
    Hope you sort it out
