Frontrow and AVI files crashing

Hi all,
I am trying to play Avi files through Frontrow however FR just keeps crashing when it accesses the avi file. I can play all of the avi files through QT (Version 7) after downloading DivX and AC3 codec's. I assumed that as it is playing fine in QT then it should play fine in FR?? Incidentally FR can play other extensions OK.
Also I still have a problem where the quality of my iMovies are terrible in FR, again they play fine in QT. Any suggestions...it's driving me mad now!!!

Welcome to the club
I have already posted a thread to this forum (still unanswered) regarding this problem. Most of my .avi (DivX/XviD) play fine on FR. A few of them make FR crash, even after showing the pre-view (didn't think that was possible), and few others crash FR without even getting to show the preview. All my files, wether they carsh FR or not, play fine on QT from outside FR but, of course, the real thrill is to play them all from FR using the little remote. I am anxiously hopping this problems will get fix soon (crossing my fingers) 0:-)

  • AVI files crash Finder and Quicktime

I am trying to put together a video using some .avi files i have on an external hard drive. But every time i try to open the file in quicktime, preview it, or import it into final cut express, it either crashes the finder completely or quicktime gives me error messages such as "mac os error 51","mac os error 1009",or "mac os error 6." i know that quicktime will open these files because i opened them on my macbook pro. Both the imac (the one with problems) and the macbook pro are both up-to-date.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a similar problem with avi files, crashing the Finder. In the columns view mode, when I click on them and it should shown the preview, the little gray wheel keeps spinning and the Finder goes up to using almost 100% of the CPU and the avi file is "in use" if I try to delete it. Only solution (that I know of) is to relaunch the Finder.
I have no problems playing the files though, it just takes longer than usual to open the files. I believe it started happening when I updated to Quicktime 7.4, and having read about numerous bugs of this version, I got VLC player and set it as the default program to play .avi files. It had basically fixed the problem for a while (no Finder crashes, still a bit slow but faster than QT) until it started again. So it doesn't seem to be just a Quicktime problem?
PS: Do people from Apple actually give answers in this forum or even read it?

  • Reduced quality of .vob and avi files

    Hi Guys
    I need some help please.
I am working on a trail version of adobe elements 10 on a new macbook pro lion.
    No problem installing application.
When I import video either in vob from dvd or avi format, the quality of the video is reduced tremendously, there are no white black lines, no jumping, just low quality.
On the bottom right hand side, the application tells me that it is doing something called conforming.
When I play the same video in vlc on the mac, or on my pc, the video runs fine with no problems and the picture is crystal clear.
I tried the things suggested in support:
    1. Rendering
    2. Checked the fps are the same as the original video ie 25 fps
    3. Tried using application to convert vob file to mp4 of all different levels of quality using external program (wondershare video converter ultimate for mac)
Elements looks like a great program, the closest to the magix I used to run on my pc, but the problem at the moment is that the quality is reduced.
    Is there a codec problem?
The vob and avi files are not recognized by quicktime.
    Please let me know asap
    Thanks
    Simon

Much has to do with which project settings you've selected in Premiere Elements when you set up your project. (For DVD video, you should be using the Hard Disk Camcorder/standard definition settings for your project.) You also should not mix DVD and AVI footage in a project. They interlace very differently and this can cause problems in your output.
Much also depends on where your AVIs are coming from. Unless your AVIs are from a miniDV camcorder, captured over a FireWire connection, you are likely working with a codec that is not fully compatible with the program. Where did these AVIs come from?
Conforming is an important part of the process of the program rendering non-workflow formats (such as DVD VOB files) into editable workflow formats. Allow the program the fully conform your DVD video and use the proper project presets and you should get results that are virtually identical to the original footage.
Parts 1 and 2 of my free 8 part Basic Training tutorials at Premiere Elements support site Muvipix.com will help  you understand how and why project set-up and proper footage formats are so important.

How do I export wmv and avi files from media encoder on a mac in CC2014?

    Nonsense.
Apple Compressor has been doing wmf exports for a decade. I have the Quicktime export components from Telestream and they appear as presets in Compressor. They should be available in Media Encoder or they should be importable. Adove apparently refuses to see them. Still trying to figure that out.

  • Import process hangs indefinately on JPG and AVI files

    Hi,
I'm seeing a similar issue to some of the other posts.
My configuration is Windows 7 x64, 4GB RAM and a Core i7. All the photos I want imported have been moved to the C drive.
When I try to import a folder with a couple of sub-folders containing a total of about 3000 JPG and AVI files (from a CANON 450D and Fuji Finepix 200EX), the import process hangs inderfinately, and I need to kill the process.
Only around 500 photos get imported.
One strange thing is that I am only able to preview a couple of the files in the preview grid. However when selecting to view a single file instead of the grid view I am able to view the file in question.
I have tried to import one file at a time (for a couple of the ones that fail that is) but the import process still hangs, even though I am able to view the file itself before import.
Have also tried only JPG files, same result.
    Any ideas?
    thanks

What happens if you try to copy these files to your iMac first? Your problem may not be that applications quit when opening but rather you're having problems simply accessing the disk.
If your external disk was formatted as NTFS by your Windows machine then your Mac will not be able to write back to the disk. Your applications may be attempting to save temporary or permanent files back to the disk. Verify this by going to the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac". Click the "More Info..." button. Under the Hardware section on the left, look for your drive. It's probably under ATA. Select your drive and look at the "File System". If it is formatted as NTFS, you can copy the files to your iMac, and use the Disk Utility to reformat the drive to a Mac or MS-DOS format.
This could also be a symptom of disk corruption. You can begin troubleshooting by using the Disk Utility found in /Applications/Utilities to verify/repair your disk. If Disk Utility finds problems but is unable to fix them, you can purchase third party tools such as DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro to attempt to repair your disk.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • OSX cant open *some* .dmg and .avi files, other open fine

    Hi,
Ive encountered a problem with opening files on my new iMac.
The problem is some .DMG files and .AVI files are not able to be opened, which have previously been fine. Where as some where fine, and still are. The problem files have white icons and are grey'ed out. They cannot be renamed, deleted and moved. These files have previously been fine, I downloaded them, installed or watched them, then stored them on my portable hard drive. They have just suddenly became un-usable.
Its weird how 90% of the AVI and DMG files I have open fine, but some have just suddenly became un-usable. If I go to delete the files, it states they are being used by another application. If I go to change the default opening program from VLC to Quick Time it states I don't have the correct privileges.
    Whats going on here?

Yeah I've done that many times. Doesn't seem to make a difference. Don't know what to do now. The problem files seem to be files that I have transferred to the portable hdd since I've had my iMac.
The drive is formatted in NTFS but I followed a tutorial on how to get read and write access. Could it be that osx can't write the files to the drive correctly? I'm not sure. It's weird because the files work perfect for a day or two after copying, but then become un-usable.

  • Iphoto 08 and avi files

I am still using iphoto 08 (version 7.1.5) on my G5. I downloaded all my pictures and avi files from my Nikon d90 and it seemed fine. I watched each avi once and they played fine but now they are AWOL! All i have is 156k thumbnail. Are they gone forever? What can i do? Those videos were for a work project.
    Thanks

Download and use  Find Any File to search for all file with Name ends in ".avi"  on your hard drive to get a picture of where they are.

    1) Download a third party player on the iPad, such as avplayerhd or cinexplayer. Search app store for AVI and read some reviews.
    2) Convert the files in a program such as handbrake, mpegstreamclip on the pc and import them.
    3) Download air video from the app store, install the server software on the pc and stream away.

  • Frontrow movie covers and avi-files problems

I have a problem with the movie covers in Fontrow.
I have placed every avi-file in a separate catalogue, and named the catalogue after the movie. I have also placed the movie cover in the same catalogue(preview.jpg). And when I scroll down the list of movie covers in Frontrow everything looks ok... But when I scroll back up again, the movie covers are changed to the first frame of the movie
To get back to the covers I must re-start Frontrow, and everythins looks ok, but as soon as I scroll back up again Im back to the first frame of the movie.
Is there something I can do to have Frontrow ignoring the first frame in the avi-file and always show the preview.jpg??

    Varlinge,
    I'm experiencing simular behaviour.
Frontrow alternates (5 sec) between "preview.jpg" and the "movie.avi" file.
Did you manage to find a solution / workaround?

  • .avi files crash finder and quicktime player after Flip4Mac component mess

The .avi files that are downloaded directly from my camera cause the finder to crash as it tries to preview, they will cause Quicktime Player to quit unexpectedly, and Final Cut Pro will see them as corrupt. The files still open in VLC so I know they aren't corrupt.
I think this may have happened because the stupid 'Flip4Mac' program suggested that I remove some conflicting components. I accidentally lost them and I'm not sure which ones they were.
I tried re-installing Quicktime 7.20, but that didn't seem to do it. Does anybody know which components I should be looking to re-install? Maybe the ones that commonly go with FCP and Quicktime? Or does anyone know which components Flip4Mac will identify as conflicting?

    http://perian.org for your AVI files.
Remove any browser plug-in that has an x in it's name as Perian replaces them (with better compatibility).
I don't use Flip4Mac but what I've read about it suggests it is used by WMP formats (not AVI).
AVI was invented by Microsoft and they discontinued the container nearly ten years ago.

  • AVI files crash Premiere?

    Hi
I keep having this problem, with both PE 3 and PE 8.
If I create an AVI file in Smith Micro, Poser with sound on it, it crashes either version of Elements that I have.
It will open files that don't have sound but I need to bring them in together because it is lip synced.
I have to load the files into Windows Movie Maker and then export them as something other then AVI, then they will load in PE 8 with no problems.
The problem with doing this is that the files have to be exported from Windows Movie Maker at a lower resolution then I would like. since as far as I can see the export options in Movie Maker are somewhat limited.
I have tried just converting the files in Any AVI Converter but when I do that it screws up the lip sync.  That's another issue that I will address on their forum.
I can only export video from Poser as flash or AVI so I don't have any other options there.
Any suggestions welcome.  Perhaps even another way to convert the files to something that PE likes. LOL
    Mike

    Mike,
Glad that you have found the ideal workflow. Sometimes one does need to think about a problem in a different way.
Have not used Poser in years, and mine is probably decades behind yours, so I do not know what the current possibilities might/might not be. For many operations, I deal exclusively in elemental streams, i.e. one Video-only and one Audio-only file. With those, I can do so very much, such as Import perfectly into Encore to author a DVD with never an error, crash or glitch. In my case, one of the reasons for this is that I do DD 5.1 SS, and that does not mux well, plus for a lot of what I do, I'd just have to de-mux it anyway.
If Poser allows you to Export just the Audio stream, that would save you one step and a couple of Alt-clicks, etc. OTOH, it might not allow that, as it is basically designed for the visuals, with Audio being secondary. Just the opposite of Adobe Audition, which is an Audio editor, that will also display Video, if necessary.
As for my age - you could well be younger... most people are...
Regarding the beard, even when I was about 18 and grew my first one, I had a gray patch on the chin. Over the decades, the red rather faded away, and that patch expanded to where it covered my entire face. I guess that the patch was a bit of a preview of things to come. Once, I looked more like a Viking, but now I look more like the troll under the bridge - the one that scares the kids!
    Good luck, and happy editing,
    Hunt

  • 10.6.8: audio goes out of sync in Netflix streaming and *.avi files

    Hello,
This began happening a couple of weeks ago and it's maddening!  There haven't been any software changes or anything recently.
At first I thought it was just a Netflix problem, or perhaps an internet connection problem.  Audio will at some point during play, 'skip', and play the same audio over again (i.e., "Hello, Ja-Hello, Jack!"), and from that point on, the audio is lagged behind the video just a bit.
Then I began watching some *.avi files on my HDD today, and the same thing is happening with them, too!  If I reload the browser or close and reopen the *.avi file, the audio will start out in sync again, but at some random point during playback, it will happen again.
Hope someone knows what's going on!  Thanks!
    Mid-2010 Macbook Pro 10.6.8

For anyone who's interested, I found a solution to this problem. Once imported into Encore, the leader in on the video and audio files cannot be trimmed at all. (I had been trimming the beginning of the video and matching audio file to eliminate the 8 seconds of dead space at the start of the clips.) Although the trim took effect immediately in the Encore timeline and I could also watch it in preview in sync, exporting was another story. The audio track seems to retain the trim when exporting but the video track does not, hence the 6-7 second delay between audio and video.
I reimported the files to my project and left in the 8 seconds of dead space at the start and voila! The video and audio match up when exported.
Ideally the trim tool would just work as its supposed to through export and all, but at least I found a solution I can work with.
(As a note, the trim works just fine in export on Encore CS5. I only had this problem with Encore CS6.)

  • Quicktime and .avi Files

Where do I go to get a plug-in for Quicktime to let me play .avi movie files? I went to the site where it says it might be, but I don't see anything for .avi files. Thanks for any help.
PS. I downloaded VLC, but everytime I right click the .avi file, go to open with, then pick VLC, it starts to open then closes.

Yes, that does work, but I'm viewing avi files over
the network, so it's hard to open VLC, then click
open file and go over the network to get the file.
There's got to be an easier way.
In VLC (because this'll come up again) just choose 'open Network' and supply the URL for the stream/resource (in some case you may have to dig into the source of the web page - or the one the link actually directs you to to find something that starts mms:// or RTSP: or similar).
This is particularly handy because in VLC - as in mplayer/ffmpegx and others) you can pipe the output to a file on disk in many cases (I hate streams. I like files.

  • IDVD and AVI files. (No sound)

I have a couple clips in .avi and they play well in quicktime with the Perian program but when i add them into an iDVD project I only get the video and I don't get sound. Is there a program like Perian for iDVD or some sort of plug-in to play the .avi file's audio?

Hopefully this helps answer your question:
    http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MPEG_StreamClip
Also take a look within the Help Menu for iDvd'08 to see which formats work best:
Video and image formats that work with iDVD
You can use these movie and graphic formats in iDVD:

Most video or image files supported by QuickTime (see the list of unsupported QuickTime formats below)

    16:9 widescreen formats

AAC, MP3, and AIFF audio files

Any format from iMovie: DV, high-definition video (HDV), MPEG-2 SD, MPEG-2 SD, MPEG-4 SD, MPEG-4 HD, and AVCHD
High definition video is converted to work with the format of your project. iDVD supports using 16:9 widescreen video; therefore, when your DVD plays on a DVD player that supports widescreen format, the footage appears in its original aspect ratio.
The following video and image formats are not supported in iDVD:

    Copyrighted or protected videos.

Movies saved in thousands of colors using the “none” compression setting in iMovie.

48-bit color images (16 bits per color). To use source files in one of these formats in iDVD, save them in a supported format.

Aurora uncompressed files. For best results, export Aurora clips as DV-format video before importing them into iDVD.

QuickTime VR, MPEG-1 or MPEG-2, Flash, streaming or encrypted movies, or QuickTime spanned movies. You can’t add MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files to an iDVD project because they don’t contain standard video tracks.

QuickTime Fast Start movies. (Fast Start movies are intended for Internet playback.) When saving a QuickTime movie for use with iDVD, click the Options button in the QuickTime Export dialog and make sure that the “Prepare for Internet Streaming” checkbox is not selected.
NOTE: You can add any type of file to the DVD-ROM portion of your DVD so that viewers can copy the file to a computer. Viewers can access these files only when viewing the DVD in a computer, not a DVD player connected to a TV.
