FrontRow leaves its Apps laying around when finished - why is this ?

I've notice that after using FrontRow and returning to normal desktop that the various Apps such as iTunes, iTunes and iMovie are left around as inactive Apps rather than being properly terminated. Also the FrontRow App is left around and not terminated. This seems wrong to me. Normally when you complete or terminate an App it goes away and doesn't occupy RAM space.
This isn't a big deal as the FrontRow Apps are dormant. However, it irks me that they lay around for no good reason, other than to be presumably quickly used if FrontRow were to be used again in a short while. RAM is precious and this may cause uneccessary page outs to disk and slow things down.
I aslo notice that after terminating FrontRow the Wired memory jump up some 80MB and back down in short bursts. Anyone know what this is all about?

"Wired" memory is in use by the operating system, not
regular applications. Front Row must be being treated
as a part of the operating system, not a regular
application. I'm not seeing the wired memory use
changing up or down after force quitting Front Row.
It's staying pretty steady.

Understand about "wired". The up/down 80MB of wired memory was after quitting FrontRow with the remote. I didn't do anything to "force quitting" FrontRow - anyways, how would you do that ?

  • Why wont my mac book turn on completly it just shows the start screen and under the appl theres a bar that keeps loading and when its done it just powers off  why is this happening??????

Why won't my macbook air turn on completly just at the start up page and under the apple logo there's a bar that just loads and when its done loading the Mac just powers off this just happens over and over I'm afraid if I do any thing my pictures will be lost on the computer ???

    Hi jasonfromforthworth,
Thanks for the question.  If you have updated to Yosemite, then the Apple Logo with the status bar is the expected behavior for when the computer starts up.  However, the powering off is not supposed to be happening ... so here are some steps to take if your MacBook Air won't turn on.
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262
    Starting up in Safe Mode
Follow these steps to start up into Safe Mode.
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be pressed as soon as possible after startup, but not before the startup sound.
Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo appear on the screen.
After the Apple logo appears, it may take longer than usual to reach the login screen. This is because your computer is performing a directory check as part of Safe Mode.
To leave Safe Mode, restart your computer without pressing any keys during startup.
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/TS1367
This article discusses what to do if your Mac won't turn on. To differentiate this from a display issue, be sure that when you press the power button:
You don't hear a startup chime.
You don't hear any fan or drive noise.
There is no video on your built-in or external display
If your computer has power but doesn't display any video, it may have one or more of these similar symptoms when you press the power button:
You may hear a startup chime.
You may hear fan or drive noise.
You may see a light from the Sleep LED (if your Mac has one).
Pressing the Caps Lock key on the keyboard causes it to light.
If any of these display-related conditions occur, see Troubleshooting: My computer has no video instead. Otherwise, continue with this article.
If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Note: See Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters for further troubleshooting with MagSafe adapters.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
    Reset the SMC.
If you are still unable to start up your computer after trying each of these steps, visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for further diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).Note: Diagnostic fees may apply for issues not covered under warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).

My iPod Touch is running on ios 7. In the last two and a half all the apps of my iPod have been suddenly wiped out twice. I had to download all the apps all over again. Why has it happened?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:

    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Work-around The Whine: why does this work? And is it BAD?

Hello everybody, sorry to bring up The Whine again, but I was wondering if anyone can figure out why the following trick works to eliminate the noise.
Also, could doing this regularly (all the time, basically) potentially be bad for the system in any way?
This is the work-around I've been using:
    1. Open Photobooth, then Force Quit that application (you must Force Quit rather than simply quit)
    2. Put the Macbook to sleep, waiting a few seconds until the indicator light starts pulsing.
    3. Wake up the computer.
Voila. That always does the trick, eliminating the whine until either the next time I boot up or the next time I open and quit Photobooth in the normal way.
I suppose force quitting may keep the processor slightly busy somehow?
    Don't know...

    John P.,
You say that all the notebooks that you know of make
some kind of noise. How many notebooks is that? Not
trying to be a jerk or anything but it better be like
dozens and dozens to make this claim. I have heard
the exact opposite of this claim from users that have
owned a few notebooks as well.
    Hi Jerome,
    No problem... I'll clarify..
5 notebooks personally, so when I say "all notebooks that I know of", it's a true claim because that is exactly what I'm saying.
If this noise is caused by capacitor that is at some
miniature threshold then why does the noise go away
when said remedies are employed? Does the capacitor
get bigger? Doesn't make sense but I appreiate that
you want to reassure original poster.
Actually I may have misspoken--it may be called a "voltage regulator" and it sits directly West of the CPU and controller chip. They do make noise and from what I have been told and remember, they can dampen it w/ a capacitor but that's about it. It's just the nature of the beast for that type of component, I'm told.
What "I" think it may be is the power fluctuations, or lack thereof, in the Intel chip causing it--when you put a load on it, there's a power fluctuation because your CPU usage is going up/down a little bit, but when you're not doing anything it's very little it causes it to make a little noise. No big deal, but just as long as it's not blaring in your ear when you're trying to use your computer. My ZV6000 does the same thing, but it doesn't matter when you've got a load or not--seems to do it more when I have Cool 'n' Quiet enabled.
This is not right. I am sorry.
If this noise is normal then I'll take no MacBook.
You know it is being fixed apparently on the MacBook
    Pros by motherboard replacement.
I never said anything about pro. I don't own one, nor have I used one. I can't say how profound in comparison to the Macbook (non pro) it is.
I'm sure if Apple thought it was a big enough problem, they would act either more quickly about it, but it's not stopping me from checking my e-mail or going on the Web.

  • Need to know the download size of an app as bandwidth is limited why is this not part of the ACC info?

This should be part of the further info on any app that is stated as update. For those of us who are on limited download on a monthly basis this is IMPORTANT. Please, please give this info. Thank you!

    Hi,
    When using
    data: l_cnt type i.
    l_cnt = xstrlen( g_zip_content ) .
xstrlen will return only in byte mode and not in character mode.
Thus the value l_cnt = 12112 which you got is in bytes which can be used to check your condition.

  • When publishing why does this happen???

I am noticing that when I publish to my publish folder to upload to my ftp site, I am noticing that my blog, journal or podcast "sub-folders" are not named the same as the titles I give then in my entire page, is there a way to rename these or change them to be more intelleigent?

I am now at my witts end, please can someone help, trying to publish my site keeps saying i have no disk space left but have only used 3Mb.
I am going to bang on a bit here sorry but a couple of thoughts:-
    1. This is a paid for service why are there basic bugs.
    2. There are no options to make space (if it was actually full).
    3. Why does it take so long to publish when it does work.
    4. other bugs inlude no response tags on blog entries.
sorry if this is a bit off topic i am just getting a bit fed up with .mac and its problems, cant get resonable answers from apple i am a very satisfied customer with regards to the actual pc its just .mac and related.
    many thanks

I have an iPad 2 and it is the 16gb one however, when I view my iPad summary in itunes and look at the overall capacity, it says that its capacity is only 14gb? Why is this? As this is clearly not what it used to be like

That is perfectly normal. The storage capacity of the device as listed is TOTAL capacity. The preinstalled apps and the iPad OS account for the remainder of the space on the device,

  • Vectors gone?  When and why?

I have read in a couple of posts that Vectors are "legacy" and may not be around forever. Can anyone shed light on the when and why of this? I am relatively new to JAVA programming but I do have a bunch of applications out there that use Vectors. I personally found them very easy to work with.
    Thoughts?

Wow! I can't wait for Java 2.0! (Please read heavy sarcasm.)
Speaking of rumors, let's not start spreading any rumors that the Java group at Sun has actually started to talk about -- let alone publicly announced -- that a 2.0 version is in the works; 1.5 sounds right to me.
I know that you can get almost the same functionality out of a List that is returned from the Collections.synchronizedList(List) method as you can out of a Vector, but Vector is by no means a deprecated class. (We should try to be careful about the casual use of meaning-laden words.) pengjuc is right that a lot of Swing (and non-Swing) classes such as JTable rely on Vector; the mere rewrite to replace all the Vectors with ArrayLists would probably require a Java release all on its own (and whose to say that ArrayLists are really all that, anyway?). Moreover, Vector is part of the public API of many classes and to deprecate it would throw a lot of developers into a tizzy because it would potentially break the ability of their applications to upgrade to a new version of Java. There is nothing inherently wrong with Vector -- it performs as advertised -- and pengjuc is right again that the performance differentials are minute over small object collections.
In response, again, to dubwai, there's a difference between using Vectors as a developer and having them included in the J2SDK. If you don't like them don't use them, and if you don't like them in other classes, rewrite those classes to your taste. Personally, I think you either have to take what you're given, do it yourself, or get involved in the process.
    Good luck, All!

  • Hey. I have recently made an update on my daughters iMac, particularly update OS X 10.9.4, when finished, its still asking for update and the same update stills remarked in the apple update menu and at the App store app. Why doesn't stop asking f.ud?

Hey. I have recently made an update on my daughters iMac, particularly the update OS X 10.9.4, when finished, its still asking for update and the same update stills remarked as ready in the apple update menu and remarked as 1 to go at the App store app. Why doesn't stop asking for update when its done like 5 times or more? Thanks for taking your time!

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • I reinstall the Yosemite due to the wifi issue, when finished, the iMovie was not installed, I try to download it from app store, but it's not free. How can I get iMovie back?

I'm using a mid 2014 13" rmbp. I reinstall the Yosemite due to the wifi issue, when finished, the iMovie was not installed, I try to download it from app store, but it's not free. How can I get iMovie back?

It's something to do with the main user account (not iTunes account) on my Mac because I logged in with another account and it downloaded fine, I installed it on the HDD and even though the date in App Store was 16th October 2014, it is the full installer of 10.10.2.
To try to resolve this problem, I have copied the installer app elsewhere and deleted it but App Store still will not allow me to download it with my main user account yet just allowed me to update iTunes.
I had a brainwave last night that it might have been related to me changing the default downloads folder to one not on my boot drive (to save disk space on my main boot drive) but having changed it back, tried again, rebooted and tried yet again, deleted my App Store preferences. nothing has worked.
