Frozen blurred screen on Macbook Pro 15"

My daughter has my old Macbook Pro 15" computer.  I went to a new unit when it was unable to be updated to a newer version of the OS.  If my memory serves correctly it is running Snow Leopard.
In any case, her daughter put a DVD in to watch and it started up fine but in a few moments the screen froze with s blurred or streaked image which is frozen even after restarting many times and taking the battery out and replacing it and then restarting.  The pixels never change.
My guess is the video card,or processor, is toast but would like to hear any other opinions.  Also, if it is the video processor, is it worth repairing or is a new computer going to be her Christmas present?
thanks to all,
bill

Try to boot the computer from your Snow Leopard DVD. Is the problem still present? If so, then there's a hardware problem. Not knowing the problem I can't tell you if it is worth repairing. But I can tell you that the GPU is soldered to the motherboard and is not replaceable. The entire motherboard would have to be replaced.

I have found the frozen login screen problem everytime I start my MacBook Pro 6,2 with Lion. I have tried everything from a simple "restore from a time machine back up" to a "clean Lion install" and the problem still appears.
Does anyone know if this problem is software or hardware related?
MacOS X Lion, Macbook Pro 6,2 (Mid 2010)

We just had the same problem with a 2010 MacBook Pro and Lion. The problem was solved by replacing the motherboard (thanks AppleCare...).
    Hope this helps.

  • A0020 model of screen in Macbook Pro Retina 13' (Late 2013)

A0020 model of screen in Macbook Pro Retina 13'. Anyone know who is the manufacturer of this screen? I've tried to find it on the internet, but it's seems that nobody know. I'm worried a little bit about that, because I didn't knew about the problem with the LG displays in Mac. In case that it's  LG, there is some instructions how to prevent screen degradation?

Go step by step and test.

  • Changing the screen ? Macbook pro 2006/2008

    Hi all !
I need to buy a new mac laptop, but infortunately, I can't use the LED screens (yes, I know, it's a pity - it gives me serious headaches, and no one computer builder seems to take these kinds of problem in consideration), so I can "only" think about the last generation of macs laptops without LED-backlight screens, the Macbook pro 2006/early 2007.
But I was wondering something : if I can find a later one, before the unibody generation, like the 2008 one, 15", (with a LED-baclight), and find a Macbook pro 2006 non-LED-backlight screen, 15", will it be possible to change the LED screen to the non one, and so giving to the 2008 computer a non-led technology, or will it be some incompatibilities at some points ?
    Thank you for your answer,
    Rergards,
    T.

Thank you for your answer, but yes, I did. And even if it's not soooo fast on a anti-glare LED one, the headache come anyway after a while.
I also have used special calibration software for this kind of problem (the one with sunglasses icon). Honestly, it gives me maybe half an hour more of work before headache. But a 3 days migraina (or migraine, too late to know the right writing) for 1h30 of work on a LED-screen is not something I can handle every day.
The fact is that I have to work also at other places than home, or wandering ones. So, that's why I wonder if it's possible to change displays, and ask the wonderful Apple community. :-)
    Thank you for your answer,
    T.

Thanks for the suggestion, the next step was to call Apple, who gave me a claim number, which I discovered you must have to get anything done with them.  They refered me to a Apple store or repair center, after some reseach took it to the Computer Store in Mobile, Alabama and they were excellent.  They took pictures of the screen with bug submitted it to Apple who denied the claim but they kept kicking it up to the next level and finally Apple agreed to sent new cover.  The Computer Store had the cover the next day, they changed it out and now I am bug free.  If your in the area of Mobile Alabama you can feel good about getting help from the Computer Store.  For the two folks that responded to my note, Thank You, good comments and good advice.

  • Broken screen of MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013). Where I can find the part?

I have a broken screen for MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) and I cannot find a replacement. Where I can find the screen? I will install myself. Thanks

Apple does not sell replacement parts, any you find will be third-party knockoffs.  Take your Retina to an Apple store genius bar and have the techs tell you what  needs to be done.  New Retina screens are not cheap, they normally replace the entire lid as a unit.

  • Blurred flickering screen in Macbook Pro Mac OSX lion 10.7.4  did hardware test no fault any solution

I am getting blurred flickering pinkish display in Macbook Pro. Hardware test found to be OK.

Honestly I would never run both Win 7 & XP at the same time in a VM. 7 needs at least 4GB to run properly and uses more resources then XP.
I personally use VMware Fusion and XP. At this time there is no software, that I'm aware of or use, that does not run on XP. So for my Mac Win VM purpose I only run XP with the software in need to use in Windows. This work very well for me. I have 2 CPUs and 3GBs of RAM assigned to XP. Leaving the other 2 CPU cores, 4 HT cores, and 5GBs of RAM for OS X.
Not sure why you need, or want, to run both versions of Windows at the same time. I don't see the need as stated above.

  • Windows 7 desktop does not fill entire screen on macbook pro 17" (mid 2010)

    Hi,
First of all I apologize for posting such a long question but in order to best describe the problem I am having with my MacBook Pro, I had to mention every detail.
I recently installed windows 7 x64 home premium on my new macbook pro 17 inch (mid 2010). After successfully installing the bootcamp drivers (version 3.1) I have noticed that my screen resolution has become slightly smaller than before. There are half an inch thick black bars on the right side as well as on the top of the screen.
This problem is not limited to windows, I'm having the same problem in mac osx after the windows 7 installation. Even on the start up gray screen.
I have tried almost every trick in the book, adjusting the screen resolution from the display settings menu (which by the way are on 1920x1080), checking all the settings on the nvidia control panel, resetting the SMC, resetting the VRAM, running the hardware diagnostic test (short as well as the long one), formatting the windows partition, formatting the Mac OSX partition then performing a fresh install of both. So far, I have been frustrated with failure.
After trying my best to resolve this issue on my own, I tried my luck with apple support. The customer representative was very helpful and listened carefully as I explained the problem to him. He asked me first to check for any available updates on my mac osx as well as in win 7. I told him that I had already installed every available update in both the OS's. He then asked me to reset the SMC and after that to reset the VRAM. Even though I had already tried this, I still gave it another shot but that didn't help.
Since my MBP was still under the standard warranty, (I have also purchased the Apple Care Protection Plan) he asked me to take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider. I took his advice and went to the nearest AASP. The Apple Engineer over there performed the same steps, adjusting screen resolution, resetting SMC and VRAM, but even he was not able to resolve this problem. He suggested that I should get my graphics cars replaced or if required upon inspection, the logic board replaced. To be very honest, I was very skeptical about his suggestion as the laptop is brand new, hardly 2 months old. How is it possible that there could be a problem with the hardware? I asked him whether it is possible to restore the firmware of the graphics card as the problem could be software related. He said that Apple have not started issuing firmware restoration CD's for the latest mid 2010 MBP's so a firmware restore won't be possible. My best bet would be to get the graphics card replaced or the whole logic board replaced.
So you see, I have been down almost every possible road which could have lead to resolving this issue but unfortunately I am stuck with it. I hope any of you could offer a different approach in order to get rid of this annoying problem.
Any help would be highly appreciated. (Trust ME!!!)

UPDATE: I just came back after a visit to the apple service provider here in New Delhi. They have replaced the logic board on my macbook pro and guess what? the situation is still the same. No difference what so ever as far as the screen resolution is concerned. I can still see those black bars in the exact same places i.e. the right hand side as well as on the top of the screen. Even the size of the black bars are still the same.
I am so upset right now. After trying my best in order to solve this problem I went to the AASP with high hopes. I was very confident that after replacing the logic board this annoying problem would go away but unfortunately that's not the case. Even the Apple Engineer was clueless on how to solve this problem.
I think I'll call apple care and speak to the customer relations regarding a replacement.
If any of you can come up with a solution to this problem please let me know.
    I'm all ears!!!

  • After upgrading to Yosemite, I am unable to share screen with Macbook Pro

After upgrading to Yosemite 10.10 on a 2008 MacBook Pro I am unable to "Share Screen" using my authorized user account.  It worked fine before I upgraded to Yosemite.
I can access "Share Screen" by "requesting permission", but of course this doesn't work unless I am sitting right by the MacBook Pro to give myself permission, which defeats my original purpose for using "Share Screen".
I attempted to add another authorized "Share Screen" user account, but was unable to access the list of add "Groups and Users" on the host MacBook Pro from the "Share Screen" dialog box.  The dialog box pops up, when I press "+" to add another user, but the list of users fails to appear.  I assume the list of authorized users for screen share has somehow become corrupt.
All other ways to access "sharing user" accounts appear to be working properly.  I can add and remove other "sharing users" without problems.  For example, I can add a new authorized "file share" user and share files without problems.
I ran Disk Utility in Recovery Mode and normal mode and corrected all errors, and user permissions on both machines.  I also ran "resetpassword" from Terminal in Recovery Mode and "reset" user permissions.  I am not an experienced Terminal or Recovery Mode user though.
I also tried turning the Firewall off, to no avail.
I am attempting to access "Screen Share" on the MacBook Pro via a Macbook Air 13" manufactured mid 2013 also with Yosemite 10.10, however, I also attempted with an older MacBook Air which experiences the same problem.

Thanks for the idea but it did not work, I do not know why it is asking me for a password which I never needed before for a guest to use the computer?  I have tried everything and I do not know which password it wants?   I do not see any option for a password for the guest account, to create one or delete one or modify it?  Maybe this bug\problem will be addressed in a future update?

  • Black Screen on MacBook Pro Early 2008

    Hey guys,
i have a problem. My MacBook Pro Early 2008 doesnt boot anymore. If i press the power button the screen remains black and the hdd spins a few seconds and you can hear the superdrive make a short noise. But nothing more happens.
I know from the nVidia 8600m GT issue and i even have the modelnumber A1260 but the apple reseller told me that if there comes no start sound , it is not that problem. My question is: is it possible that the (probably) defect 8600m gt chip on my logicboard has caused a defect of the whole logicboard ? I heard from a guy whos board was repaired for free but its PowerManagment Unit on the logicboard was defect but the Technical guy told him , that it was caused by the nvdia chip and so it was repaired for free. How can i find out if my chip was the reason for the defect ?
Iam not a native speaker and i hope you can understand what iam trying to say iam happy for every correction and help.
    greets
    max

"How can i find out if my chip was the reason for the defect ?"
By having it examined by a certified Apple technician. If necessary, show the tech the KB Article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377 MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues
"apple reseller told me that if there comes *no start sound* , it is not that problem."
You do not have a start sound?
Have you tried starting up from your install DVD?
If you have AppleCare, strongly suggest that you contact them first.

  • Grey screen on Macbook Pro boot up

I've got a Macbook Pro 15" laptop (mid-2011) running Mac OS X Lion. It recently broke down and I can't get past the grey screen on bootup. It gets to the Apple logo and the circle loading animation then straight to grey screen.
I've tried Safe Mode, zapped the PRAM, plugged everything out of it including the power cable, even tried to boot the recovery HD using the Option key. When I clicked Recovery HD, it went straight back to the grey screen. Nothing seems to work.
I bought the computer the same week Lion came out so it had Snow Leopard on it and came with the Snow Leopard installation disc. I downloaded Lion from the App store for free. What would happen if I booted the computer from the Snow Leopard install disc? Would I lose anything that was previously on my computer like software I downloaded for Lion (Pages, Numbers, Keynote etc.)? Would I be able to get these back if I reinstall Lion after the boot and where would I get Lion from as I don't have the installation disc. Could I access my Apple account history on the App store and reinstall Lion from there somehow as I've seen Lion is no longer available on the App store?
    HELP!!

What would happen if I booted the computer from the Snow Leopard install disc? Would I lose anything that was previously on my computer like software I downloaded for Lion (Pages, Numbers, Keynote etc.)?
Booting the computer from the Snow Leopard install disc alone won't do anything.  Only if you were to attempt an installation from that disc might you run into trouble.  Kind of like trying to put a propeller on a jet airplane.  It just can't be done without removing the entire engine!
The 10.6 installer disc won't get you to the App Store.    For that you need to boot with command-R.
If your data isn't backed up, you seriously need to consider some data recovery options before attempting even a command-R.   Once your data is backed up, contact the App Store support to get the Lion or Mountain Lion installer program to show up on your App Store, depending on where your software compatibility lies.
In the future, it is always wise to keep a clone of your system in event something should go wrong.  That way you don't need the store to have the correct installer for your system.

  • What happen next, after erase and lock screen of macbook pro?

Hi, I just lost my macbook pro and I have some personal data on it. I read some articles who said that Erase mac will delete whole data. When I erased my Macbook pro from Web Interface https://www.icloud.com it ask me to enter 6 digits passcode I entered and It also lock my Macbook pro which I wasn't select explicitly. Now its showing me status "Pending: Erase Mac" and both Erase mac and lock in disable mode.I also checked option "Notify me when found". Now my questions are these.
If user connect to internet, it will erase my whole data and lock the screen, isn't it?
If user connect to internet, It will notify me?
I read somewhere that by choosing erase mac option I am no longer to track my mac, isn't it?
I also read somewhere that by locking screen it ask 4 digits passcode, then why its asked me for 6 digits?
Please let me know about these question's answers. This will be great for me. Thanks.

If user connect to internet, It will notify me?
    Yes and yes.
I read somewhere that by choosing erase mac option I am no longer to track my mac, isn't it?
Not 100% sure, sume users have reportedly still be able to track it.
