Frozen display on macbook pro

Hi!
My macbook has recently developed an intermittent problem with the display. The display becomes inaccessible as if the mouse button were being held down (there is no mouse attached, I am using the trackpad, which seems to be working fine).
The display then no longer responds to clicks, although I can still move the mouse. I have tried every possible keyboard command and nothing will return control of the mouse. Using keyboard commands I can manage to logout, but at the login screen the mouse will still not respond to clicks, so I cannot select my account to login again. After a reboot everything is fine.
This has happened a few times in the last few weeks and is pretty annoying. It has also happened while using different applications (at least Parallels and Firefox). Has anyone else found this problem? Any solutions?

Have you tried forcing shutdown? Hold the power button for 5-10 seconds to force shutdown.

If your content is still being displayed incorrectly, I would check the resolution setting for the built in display with this article:
OS X Yosemite: Adjust your display’s resolution
If it keeps happening whenever you use AirPlay then I would use this section of the following article to reset the display system:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
Restart your computer.

Sound Switches Between Thunderbolt Display and MacBook Pro

I have an Apple Thunderbolt display and MacBook Pro set-up with dual screens. I have an iPhone plugged into a dock that runs to the display. When I have music playing out of the display and I disconnect my iPhone, it switches the sound to the MacBook Pro.
1. How do I stop this from happening?
2. If I can't stop it from happening, how do I move the sound from the MacBook Pro back to the display?
There doesn't seem to be any options within Preferences/Sound to change it back.

I've a Spyder4Elite that I use on both my Thunderbolt Display and on my MBP - and, while both are calibrated, they don't - and cannot - 'match' one another, no matter how hard I try.
I suspect that you're running up against the same wall? Different technologies in different displays. I doubt that you'll ever get a perfect match: mine are just 'good enough'.

You have to have a Keyboard, Mouse and the AC adapter connected to the Macbook Pro to be able to use what Apple calls Clamshell mode. That is where you have an external monitor connected to the MBP and close the lid so the notebook screen turns off but yet the system does not sleep so you can still use it with the external monitor.
No there is no way to put the MBP to sleep and still use it. That would be like you going to work, Taking a Nap and still doing your job. Can't be done as far as I know.

24-inch Mid 2007 as external display for Macbook Pro Retina?

I'm a video editor looking for a new laptop. Tough decisions, but these facts may help my decision...
Can I use my 24-inch Mid 2007 as external display for Macbook Pro Retina?
And if so, would the Macbook be able to access the external hard drives that are connected to the iMac? Or do the external hard drives have to be connected to the Macbook Retina?
Retina's picture quality is just incredible but compared to Macbook Pro non-retina you sacrifice: disc drive, port options, customization, anti-glare screen. And its more expensive. Arghh

I would use the retina as the primary screen for the canvas and viewer, while putting the browser and timeline on the iMac.
Apple won't help here. Unfortunately, they leave they're old products in the dust and wouldn't waste time writing an article about connecting a macbook retina to an '07 iMac.

Hi - How do I connect an HDTV as a second monitor to Thunderbolt display with macbook pro in clamshell mode?

I have a Late 2011 Macbook Pro in clamshell mode connected to a Thunderbolt Display with the built in Thunderbolt cable. I want to then connect an HDTV via the Thunderbolt port at the back of the Thunderbolt display. I already had a cable that I thought would work which turns out to be a MiniDisplay port to HDMI cable and therefore not compatible with Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt (Mini DisplayPort not being the same technology although it uses the same port - although I'm not an expert !!) So far a web search has provided me with the only solution being using a Thunderbolt dock or storage that has multiple Thunderbolt ports and then using that to daisychain inbetween the Thunderbolt Diplay and the HDTV. The cheapest solution I can find for this would be about £250. Surely not ??!!!!

Rookie question, 2009 MacBook Pro. We bought a dvi-VGA adapter to connect to an external display. Got a picture on the external monitor but very poor resolution. Meanwhile the display on the MacBook Pro re-set itself and we were not able to restore it to normal even after we disconnected the external monitor. We now have our MacBook Pro with messed up resolution and display, AND no external display. How do we get the MacBook Pro back to its default display settings? Any help greatly appreciated!

I would like to offer this solution. I have a MacBook Pro with an external monitor, and, for a year and a half both displays slept when I closed the MBPS. This behavior stopped when I installed Lion. They would sleep when I removed the power cord, but what a pain that would be. The command "pmset -g assertions" gave no indication of which process ought be preventing sleep.
I contacted Apple support, and after some searching, the guy working with me found this thread, which was flagged as an Apple-approved solution:

Here's the command to make your laptop behave like it did Pre-Lion (courtesy of my friend):
sudo nvram boot-args="iog=0x0"
Works perfectly for me. If it screws up your system, just zap the PRAM next boot (cmd-opt-p-r) and you'll be back to the default Lion state. Or if you can still get into terminal, this command will get you back to Lion's default state as well:
sudo nvram -d boot-args
Enjoy!
One snag was that I had to run it with the external monitor disabled, but it worked great!

How to keep display on Macbook Pro instead of Clamshell Mode

I have an extended desktop through a Mini-Display Port-to-VGA connection from my Macbook Pro (OSX Mountain Lion) to an external monitor. I have the Macbook Pro screen set up as the "main screen" (with the display bar on top). But everytime I close my macbook pro, the computer goes into clamshell mode and sets the extended desktop as my "main screen" which switches my display bar. Is there anyway to tell OSX ML to always keep the Macbook Pro screen as the default and not go into clamshell mode?
This also creates a problem when I want to physically close my computer to allow to sleep, but instead goes into clamshell mode and extends the desktop to my external display. Any ideas?

Installation of 27" cinema display with macbook pro silver key and bootcamp

For everyone out there who may be interested in using the new 27" cinema display with an older Macbook Pro Intel with silver keys and bootcamp.
What is needed:
1. Apple 27" cinema display.
2. Macbook pro Intel silver key model
3. Altona Dual Link DVI to Mini DisplayPort Converter (Model AT-DP400)
4. Bootcamp 3.1 drivers from Mac OSX Snow Leopard V10.6.3(retail)
Procedure:
1. Update your display software on the Mac OS side. Apple has posted an update on their software downloads page, "LED Cinema Display Software Update 1.0" After doing so, make sure that the 27" CinDisp is operating correctly and you can change the brightness from the system settings.
2. On the Windows side, install the bootcamp 3.1 drivers. These are on the Snow Leopard distribution CD. However, there is a bug in the .msi installer that causes the installation to go into an endless loop. This must be resolved during the installation of the drivers. 3. After you have successfully installed the bootcamp 3.1 drivers, then install Apple's bootcamp update: "Apple Magic Trackpad and 27-inch LED Cinema Display Update for Windows 32 bit".

I have the same MBP and recently bought a 23" cinema display on Craigslist for $140. It works great. I had a display port to DVI adapter and it worked fine. Built a stand to hold the laptop vertically so it's out of the way. Don't know about older displays but anything with DVI should work fine.
The screen size and resolution are great for photo editing. I now have the best of both worlds, a display that rivals my wife's iMac and portability.

My son changed the display setting on my MacBook Pro and I can't get it back to how it was... Even though I change resolutions, the text is huge and the display doesn't fit the screen. How can I get back the original setting?

Under System Preferences>Displays make certain that you select "Scaled' and pick the highest resolution:

External display on MacBook Pro

I'm using the latest MacBook Pro 17" 2.5GHz along with an external 22" digital display (which isn't from Apple).
_First issue_: the system is not detecting the loss of the external display when it is turned off or unplugged. this is not solved by clicking "detect display" where the two display will still be shown on the list until I reboot.
this situation is very annoying since I do not use a mirroring setup and the external display is using a primary. so when I disconnect the MBP from it, I will end up stuck with the secondary display.
I have posted a similar topic in the MBP forum (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1475634&tstart=0) because I'm under the impression that this may be related to the MBP more thant Leopard since *my PowerBook G4 doesn't have this problem at all*.
_Second issue_: from time to time with no apparent reason, the LED display of the MBP switch to the external monitor's profile. when this is happening, I go in the system preferences and, as soon as I click on Display, the MBP's display immediatly get back to his profile without doing anything.
