Frozen halfway through shutting down

Hi, I also posted this under iMac cd/dvd drive forum, but thought I'd give it a shot here too just in case:
Help! I have a brand new iMac (got it for Xmas) and am very computer un-savvy so I need some assistance. I loaded a cd which never showed up on the desktop, and it made everything other than Safari unclickable (kaleidoscope whirly showed up). I tried the eject button on the keyboard, looked online on how to force eject, tried that, didn't work, then found online some suggestions to shut down then restart the computer. I forced shut down, got the dialogue boxes for shutdown and everything I had open, but now it's frozen halfway through shutting down. I can see my desktop background and mouse cursor, but there's no dashboard, no menu at the top...I tried holding down the keyboard shortcuts for force shut down, tried holding down the power button on the back...HELP!!!! I'm starting to freak out. I've had to get on my laptop in order to post this since NOTHING is working on the iMac. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

nevermind, someone is helping over at cd/dvd drive. thanks...

  • Cursor frozen, can't shut down

The cursor on my MacBook is frozen in position and won't respond to the trackpad. There's a window open in finder for resetting the pointer for an alias, but it doesn't respond to keyboard commands. In addition, I've been unable to shut down or restart. Oddly, the keys for making the screen brighter/darker and changing the audio volume are working fine.
    Any ideas?

Hey szandara and welcome to the forum -
It sounds like you have some sort of process that has locked up and you need to force quit that process. It would be hard to determine what that process is and at the same time, it would be hard to navigate the Activity Monitor in order to Force Quit it.
In order to shutdown your MacBook you can try pressing the Start Button briefly to display a window for Shutdown and then hitting Return to Shutdown.
I hope this helps - GDF

Search on "My Zen is not starting properly, or goes into rescue mode, what should I do?" in the FAQ post and try the advice there.

If this worries you then you might want to return your player anyway. If you bought it from a high street shop (as opposed to Internet) then it might be quicker to return it there.

  • Help! G4 PowerBook "Detect Displays" triggers shut down message

I think I may have damaged my PowerBook by being too lax with a DVI/VGA adaptor when unplugging it from a VGA multimedia projector - I was in a hurry and removed it from the Mac whilst it was halfway through shutting down. (I've gotten away with this before but have since heard it's not a good thing to do, probably even worse if halfway through shut down).
If I choose Detect Displays now, it triggers the "Are you sure you want to shut the computer down?" message.
I also am unable to boot up successfully unless I hold the Option key during the initial black "chime" screen - the PowerBook appears to die with a squeak - both the HDD and SuperDrive lose power. Option-V won't give me a verbose boot unless I flash the PRAM, and then works only once.
(I've reinstalled Tiger 10.8.4, have run Disk Utility and have flashed the PRAM.)
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?

First off, I think you got your numbers confused. There is no 10.8.4. There is 10.4.8. But that's immaterial here. You should try to run the hardware test than came with your Powerbook:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86287
It may be you shorted the signal to the videochip, or the power supply.
Resetting the power manager may also work
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
Be sure when booting off the disk, to disconnect all thrid party peripherals.

  • Macbook pro shuts down halfway through OSX Yosemite update

I made the update from OSX Mavericks to Yosemite. Was running fine until my computer ran out of battery. I plugged it in and try to turn it on, since then it stopped working.
Now, when I turn it on, the apple logo with the loading bar underneath appears, and halfway through the download, the computer shuts down on its own.
It has been doing that for 2 weeks now,
    Anybody can help ?
    Thanks,
    Matt

I would start by booting into the Recovery Partition, on start up hold the ⌘ and R keys till you see the small window containing the four options. I think Disk Utility is the last option in the list. Use it to repair Permissions and then repair the hard drive.
Your signature says you are using Yosemite? Are you still able to boot into Mavericks or have you successfully installed Yosemite?
Remember, you should never do anything system intensive while using battery power, even if it's a full charge. Always use your AC power.

  • Itunes shuts down halfway through syncing

I start Itunes and plug in my itouch and it starts syncing all the way to "Backing up" ipod. Then an error message pops up and says itunes has to shut down.

Not sure ... since the msvcrt.dll result is rare, I don't have it strongly correlated with any given cause. I thought I'd check on the podcast thing because it's probably the most common cause of this sort of of crash (although usually the error for that does cite a QuickTime component of some sort rather than the dll we're seeing with you).
I'm still wondering about the operating system and its interface with applications on the PC.
Even though you aren't getting the symptoms described in the following troubleshooting document, I think it might be worth a try in this context:
[iTunes for Windows: "iTunes was not installed properly. Please reinstall iTunes" message|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3074]
(The theory here is that the .NET framework is one of the things that Windows uses to stop programs getting their dlls in a tangle. So a subtle problem with the .NET framework might cause an msvcrt.dll error on a sync, rather than the more usual launch issues.)

  • Frozen mid shut down!  STUCK!  HELP!

on occasion, my iphone will freeze and show a blank screen. in order to remedy this, i have shut the phone off and turned it back on as a fix. this time, however, mid-shut down, i seem to be frozen. the little round windy looking thing has been winding for over 1/2 hour. iphone will not completely shut down nor start back up. all i have is the black screen and the round and round and round and round. will someone PLEASE get me out of this??????

Hello lp14, Sorry for the inconvenience your going through today.
Try Rebooting the iPhone by Holding down the Sleep/Wake Button and Home Button down together. Do not let go till you see an Apple Logo. When you see the Logo let go.
The iPhone should take 1 min to boot back to the iPhone OS. If your not able to get back into the OS you can try letting the battery drain all the way, Then let it fully charge and attempt the reboot again.
If this still fails you might be looking at restoring the iPhone. Keep in mind if this is done all Data you manually added to the iPhone will be lost. But any Data thats on the Mac or PC should sync back to the iPhone as long as the data originated from that PC or Mac.
If you are unable to restore the iPhone the normal way. You can force it to restore. Connect iPhone into your Mac or PC, and hold the Home button and Sleep/Wake button down till you see a USB Cable on the iPhone. You will see an Apple Logo just keep pressing these buttons till you get a USB cable.
Once this is done iTunes will detect an iPhone in recovery mode, and want you to restore. Proceed with this. Restore from Backup or Setup as new iPhone if you want.
If you are not comfortable with doing this you got 2 options. Call 1-800-My-iPhone or make an appointment at your local Apple Retail Store for better assistance. http://www.apple.com/retail/

  • ITunes had to shut down half way through iPad iOS download now its stopped working

My iPad now has a black screen with white apple logo - it won't respond to anything and iTunes doesn't find it.  This is ever since halfway through updating its iOS to 7.0.2, I tunes had a problem and had to shut down.  Can anyone help please please

    Hey Tom Taylor2,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing issues updating your iPad to iOS 7. If you have not already done so, you may want to restart or reset the iPad:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, you'll want to restore your iPad with iTunes in recovery mode:
iOS: Unable to update or restore

    Thanks,

  • A window has frozen on my macbook and i cant shut down my mac.

  • What is the best way to shut down an iMac that has frozen during a data transfer? The disk I was writing to will not eject. Stopping "copy items to" doesn't work either_ it is frozen as well. Is there a way to force eject the disk so I can shut down?

Some more information on the above: OS: 7.2
    1. None of the shutdown commands would work so I held the power button down and received a prompt that asked if I wished to force eject the drive, I selected
the force eject and then shut down.
    2. Just recently I installed an eSATA _ Thunderbolt_ port multiplier compliant PCIe card (Seritek Q6G) into a thunderbolt external chassis (OWC Helios) (seritek Q6G).
This freeze data transfer also happened when I connected a Firmtek 5PM external tower to the iMac via thunderbolt cable.
The driver for the seritek Q6G was installed in the iMac previous to connection of any of the devices.
Both external towers mount ok on the iMac but have frozen during data transfer.
The initial freeze was with the Firmtek 5PM which is (JBOD)_ I thought that might have had something to do with the freeze_ it being JBOD_ so next I tried the Mercury Elite AL Pro Q2- which is formated in RAID 5. But then froze too.
Anybody have any experience with this?
    Maybe I need another driver?
Or maybe some update to my OS?
    Any suggestions welcomed.
    Thank you

Hello BDAqua, thanx for the suggestions. Before I saw this reply I tried to first quit the finder and then to relaunch the Finder but that resulted was a blank gray screen.
In the end I ended up having to power down the iMac.
Fortunately the RAID array that was "active" seems to be fine and also has a firewire 800 connection so I can use it_ just not with thunderbolt until this issue is solved.
I'm going to check in the Applications>Utilities>system log to see if any clues are evident_ thank you for the suggestion.
PS: Nothing of note was obvious as a root cause in the Activity Monitor though.
hmmm....I was told that the Helios and seritek card were compatable and that the Helios didn't require any drivers..it will be a drag if there isn't an easy fix for this since this new PCIe card from seritek is the first to offer port multiplier compatibility for eSATA to thunderbolt...since they are both new I'm hoping that an OS upgrade will be the fix (presently7.2)...we shall see.
