Frozen icons - files will not move with mouse.

Hello, all.
All of a sudden I noticed that the icons on notebook's desktop have stopped responding to my mouse commands. I've tried with the built-in trackpad as well as with an external mouse. I've also tried to create a test user but the same happens.
I have also booted the system with Leopard's installation DVD and verified/repaired permissions to ensure that it wasn't the problem but the same continues to happen. I also verified read and write rights to these folders but nothing seems to be out of order (at least nothing that I can see).
This started happening after the internal drive became full and my wife deleted several photos stored in iPhoto.
Any ideas of what might be the cause and how to fix it ?

Just upgraded to 10.5.8 today and suddenly this problem appeared.
The thread starter tried his best to explain the problem but everyone seemed to be suggesting things that were not responsive to this problem (yet plausible overlooks for a n00b on OS X)
Let me first say that I have been using a Mac since 1988, and OS X since the day the Public Beta released. So, I know all the little tricks to try like zapping the PRAM, checking the align to grid settings and other stuff we used to try, just before disabling extensions and rebuilding the desktop :P
Here's what I am seeing: Any icon displayed in icon view is selectable, but immovable. You can double click on the icon to launch it, right click on it...do everything except move it. Even tried some of the old favorites like holding down a modifier key and dragging. Nope, still locked down.
I looked deep to find if there wasn't some kind of "Lock icons in place" setting in the 10.5.8 update that accidentally got enabled by default.
Also tried starting up with no battery or other accessories plugged in (after zapping the PRAM a few times).
Tried logging in to another account on the machine to see if it was my user account that was corrupted - same results in my son's account.
I am running a MacBook Pro 2.33 with 10.5.8 and 2GB of RAM.
This seems suspiciously tied to the update, but it may be a nasty coincidence. I have been holding off on installing my Snow Leopard upgrade because of the CS3 issues I have heard about. I hope this is not the "force point" on that. And rebuilding my drive from scratch? Ugh! I think I would just move to an "off the grid" commune instead of facing that one.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: this problem is affecting all dragging, not just icons. I just tried to drag the URL for this thread from the address bar to the desktop for later reference. Nope. Allows me to double click to select it, but not drag it.

Downloaded files will not move or allow to be edited?

Hi, I hope this is the correct place to ask this question.
I currently have two hard drives, a HDD and SSD with HDD as the windows install/main drive.
When I download files from google chrome, they go straight into my SSD in a 'downloads' folder.
A few days ago it wouldn't let me access this folder, just took forever to load and never actually opened. I eventually did some googling and found out It was optimized for photos. I changed this to general files and now I can access it again. However when
I download files to this location some become unmoveable so to speak. I download a lot of music to this folder and whenever I try to move some files, even just an individual file, it regularly comes up with "discovering items".
Now for the files that do move, windows won't allow me to edit them (ie: Artist/Title/Tags, etc)
The only way i've got around this is by copying the files, pasting them all to have (1) at the end and then moving them files. It will still, however, not let me delete the original files. I can open them, listen to the mp3 tracks, but not move them or delete
them.
Can anyone help? Would be much appreciated.

Have you tried to put another file manually into this folder to check if this file could edit it?

Locked PDF files will not open with user name and password. Help?

I go to school online and our eBooks are in pdf format. I download them to my MacBook so that I can read them offline. When I download them, they open as they always did but, when I put my username and password in to unlock them, it tells me something about the file is edited and a copy will be saved but, it never opens the file. I have adobe reader on it, I am getting frustrated! I don't want to be logged into class every time I am studying material. Any ideas? Thanks in advance - this is my first Mac so, bare with me

Not using netwok magic. I shut it down when it comes up. I have tried using 192.168.1.1 but still will not accept user name and password. I never changed the factory default and it just continues to ask for the user name and password. Web utility site will not come up. I have a wired desktop as my main computer and that is the computer I have been trying to access the utility from.

Tif files will not import with the same filenames as the .nef files

When I work on a .nef file, say x.nef, Lightroom 1.0 will allow me to export the x.nef as x.tif to the same folder as the x.nef file resides, but obviously I need to import the x.tif file into the folder for it to show up in LR When I try to import the x.tif file into LR it shows up the the file list OK. When select it and try to import it I get a message telling me that I can't import it as the file x.nef already exists. I didn't select x.nef but x.tif. It will allow me to import it into a different folder, but that is not what I want to do. i need the keep the relevant net and tif files with the same name in the same folder.
Adobe tech. support suggested; reinstalling, trashing the LR preferences folder, making new databases. None of these solved the problem. In LR beta 4 I could save import tif files with the same file name the .nef with no problem, but not in LR1.0.
Using Win XP Pro SP2. Pentium P4 3.0 with 2gig ram.
Has anyone else had this problem. Any assistance appreciated.

I agree (Adobe) that first the concept that michael.nef and michael.tif and michael.jpg are different files needs to be changed.
A duplicate is a file that has the same filename and extension and the same content measurements.
Under the above concept or any concept, ignore duplicates should bring in any file to LR with the same name (contents and measurements) and different extensions.
I do edit in NEF (more now if I use LR instead of PSE5), do save to PSD, and do save to L/F JPG. If I had to layer in PSD, then I use that for printing, otherwise LR. I always have to make large jpgs to upload to web printing sites, and even small jpgs (now we have the same name and extension (but the measurements would be different) to email. Yes, we do keep copies of an image. I can see where I might want to have the edited .NEF and the PSD in the lib to view, cuz they may have different edits on them.

Icons files will not displaying when running web-based forms locally

My icon files (jpgs) are not displaying from within Forms Developer 10g or when I run the web-based forms from within Developer. I have tried the following without success:
6.4 Deploy Icons for Forms Running on Web
Option One: For Running Web Based Forms from Within the Forms Builder in Oracle 10g Developer Suite
1) Copy all the icon image files (*.jpg) to the directory of <Oracle_10g_Developer_Suite_Installation_Root_Dir>\forms\j2ee\formsapp\formsweb\icons
2) Make sure to set imageBase=DocumentBase in the file < Oracle_10g_Developer_Suite_Installation_Root_Dir >\forms\server\formsweb.cfg.
3) Edit the < Oracle_10g_Developer_Suite_Installation_Root_Dir >\forms\java\oracle\forms\registry\Registry.dat file, specify the icon image file extension by modifying the following line:
default.icons.iconepath=icons/
default.icons.iconextension=jpg
Save this Registry.dat file.
4) Restart the OC4J Instance.
5) Launch the form from Forms Builder.
I just got a new laptop and am setting everything up again. I have everything setup the same way as on my old machine (same as above). It worked fine on my old computer but not on the new one.

try to create jar file for u r all jpgs but also u have to check the size of u r images
and if possible try to resave the same images by using Acdsee or use any other image viewer softwares.

.jnlp file will not open with java

I am in a class that is requiring us to open a .jnlp simulation. I have tried everything that I can think of and I cannot get this to open. please help!

To lower the risk of malware infection, Safari now downloads Java WebStart application files to a hidden temporary folder and does not open them automatically. Although you may find instructions on the Internet for defeating this protection, I strongly advise against doing so.
The right way to launch a WebStart application is to click the Downloads button at the right end of the Safari toolbar and then double-click the icon of the JNLP file you just downloaded. If you want to save the file for later use, click the magnifying-glass icon to reveal it in the Finder, and then move it. Otherwise it will be deleted at the next login.
In order for this method to work, you must first have selected
Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ General ▹ Remove download list items: Manually or When Safari Quits

Project prel file will not open with Premiere 11

Created slide show and project with Photo Shop Elements 11. Went to Premiere Elements 11 and to File/ Open Project. Found the project listed and selected Open. The project file then showed in the upper right toolbar margin. Upon using Publish + Share, it states that I have nothing in the timeline. I tried everything to get something in the timeline. Did I wrongly create the project with PS Elements and is my slide show saved anywhere else?

Please try this conventional route from the Elements Organizer 11 Slideshow Editor slideshow to opening that slideshow in Premiere Elements 11 project.
In the Elements Organizer 11 Slideshow Editor, go to Output and select Edit with Premiere Elements Editor. That command will put the slideshow in a video format on the Timeline (.psess file) and at the same time put a folder with the project assets as well as a copy of the .psess in Project Assets.
If you need to do additional edits of the .psess (video) on the Timeline, then you right click the Timeline .psess file, and select Break Apart Elements Organizer Slideshow to do just that.
If the slideshow opens in Premiere Elements 11 Editor with black borders, then you set the Premiere Elements project preset beforehand manually (File Menu/New/Project) and then Output the slideshow from the Elements Organizer slideshow editor.
Have you been there and done that? If not, please give it a try and let us know the outcome.

Slides will not advance with mouse

Is there a way to advance slides without pressing the down arrowkey or manually clicking on the next slide? It seems that moving to the next slide should be as easy as scrolling down on the mouse, but it is unresponsive. Is there something I'm missing? This seems so simple yet I can't fix it.
I am not in presentation mode...I have the default view where you can edit the current slide with all of the other slides on the left bar.

I am using Lion, and the "group" of slides on the sidebar will scroll with the mouse, but you cannot advance to the next slide unless you physically click on it. This seems tedious when I'm going through my slides in class, taking notes on each. I have to click on the next slide, then click into the notes section. That's two clicks per slide, instead of just scrolling through with a gesture. This is easy to do in Powerpoint....sigh.

.aep files will not open with AE CS6

All my After Effects projects show as opening with Acrobat and I cannot change them to open with After Effects, and these were created with AE CS6.
Any ideas?

Ok simple easy idiot proof method. Go to
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects CS5.5\Support Files
Rename AfterFX.exe to AfterFX.exe.org or anything will do to make it a non.exe file. Then click on any .aep file. Windoze will say can't find AE CS5.5 and it will then allow go to the dialog window where you can change it to open with AE CS6. Check the always open with this app box and you're done. Go back and rename the changed CS5.5 file to AfterFX.exe and you're back to normal with all future .aep files to open in CS6.
Same process with any version of AfterFX.exe Windoze may have locked you in to.

Ok, I'm doing something unique here maybe. I'm trying to Network Render a project because it takes about 8 hours or so to render in Premiere. My workflow consist of a number of dymanically linked AE files that make up some titles, info headers, and some green screen comps. This is all cut beatifully on the Premiere Pro timeline and audio is edited nicely in Audition. What I'd like to do is import the Premiere Pro project back into After Effects after the final cut and use the AE renderer to distribute. The problem I run itno is the .aep files I used in premiere show up as unlinked footage. Further more trying to relink the file leads the ,aep files to be represented by the importer as "8o u" or some crap like that. Can .aep files not be directly represented in a workflow like this?

If you have a Premiere Pro project that contains linked AE files as source footage then AE will have to open up in the background to run and render those files. Also, all linked Comps in AE will have to be in the same AE project.
If you open up the Premiere Pro project in AE then what do you think will happen to the linked files? AE will have to open them up and render them so that they can be rendered in AE.... See the problem.
Dynamic Link and AE as a comp are only useful in PPro if you're finishing your project in PPro. If it were my project as soon as the edit was close to final I would have rendered all of the dynamic linked files and bring the footage into PPro. Now you'll have no problem in AE doing the final color grading.
Most of my long form projects that require a final color grade are rendered from PPro or FCP or Avid to a production codec and then the footage is brought into AE for the final color grade if I need things like Colorista. Other wise the final color grade is done in Speed Grade or the entire sequence is sent out for color grading by boxing up a bunch of hard drives and bringing the entire project into a grading studio.

CSS file will not sync with website

I'm having this really weird problem with Dreamweaver CS5.5.
I use Dreamweaver to sync stuff onto my website, and everything else will sync fine, except the CSS file. My CSS files are just inside a folder called "css". When I sync, everything says "operation successful", but when I open my webpage, and view source, it still has the old css file from like a few days ago. I even tried to manually delete the css file from my website, then re-sync it up, it STILL loads back the old file (the old file is nonexistent on my computer now, I made many edits on it and saved over it). What in the world?
Does anyone know what's happening here? Never experienced this error before...
I'm using Dreamweaver from Master Collection 5.5, if that matters.

File will not open with Reader X

I had been using Adobe Reader ver 5, but recently updated to ReaderX. I have a valid .pdf file that when I click, it says I need to download Adobe Reader. I can drag-and-drop file on the Reader X icon and the file is opened without error. Suggerstions?

Did you uninstall Reader 5 before installing X? Usually an upgrade to a higher version should take care of that, but it doesn't work well if there is such a large gap between versions.

CC 2014 .aep files will not open with AE CS6

I have a file for Adobe After Effects I was working on for class, however I couldn't work on it at the college last week due to spring break so I used the CC Trial that they had available from this website for my laptop. Today, when I tried to open it up on one of the college computers that has the CS6 version of the software, it wouldn't open. I get this error that says:

You need to save backwards. CC 2014 (which is version 13) can save back to version 12 (which is CC). Then you would open it in version 12 (CC) and save it back to version 11 (CS6).

PDF files will not open with adobe or another pdf addon; they go immediately to a screen that says 'about:blank.'

I have tried both Adobe X and pdf download, using Firefox 5. If I click on a pdf, another tab opens and I get a blank screen that says above it 'about:blank.' This happens regardless of if I set things to open to browser or in the pdf viewer itself.

These are online documents, right? This message usually means that you are trying to open the doc in a browser that uses its own PDF viewer, not the Adobe Reader plugin.
