Frozen iMac

I was working on my iMac yesterday using the most current version of Snow Leopard and it froze. Force quit didn't work, and a hard shutdown didn't either.

    Hi.
    iMac Late 2012 OSX 10.9.2.
Fusion Drive 1TB Unused - lots of free space .
Not more then 5 Apps .
Lately when waking the imac from sleep , I have Frozen iMac with Spinning Wheel .

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Frozen iMac G5 - 17" Power PC

Hello all. After 2 years of never needing to do anything to this Mac, I'm staring at a blue startup screen and not getting further. Last night I found my Mac frozen after trying to access a desktop widget. After holding down the power button to shutdown and then restart the iMac, I got the grey Apple startup with the rotating clock looking icon. And that's all I saw for a very long time. After that, I finally started seeing the blue background on the screen, but that is as far as I'm getting.
Any advice on the next step? I only have a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse - just to make this more fun.

I too am having trouble starting up an iMac, approximately 2 years old, with the 3rd time with this problem. This time I did start from the install disk and repaired the permissions and the disk without any problems found. I also reset the SMU as the fan was running at jet-engine speed. The computer was still unable to restart from the local disk with just the grey screen with the spinning dial appearing.
The first time this happened, about 8 months ago, I reinstalled the operating system and it was fixed for about 2 months, then I had to wipe out the entire computer and start from scratch to repair whatever was wrong. It worked well again for a few months and now is all messed up again.

  • Frozen iMac On Wake

On many (okay, most) mornings I wake my imac (late 2009 version 10,1, OSX 10.8.4, 12 gb memory) to this problem:
    Click bluetooth trackpad
Sceen lights up but is completely unresponsive
Screen is completely frozen, clock is usually frozen at a few minutes after 10pm (that could reflect my own usage pattern - when I last use the machine)
Hard restart fixes the problem, reloads all programs correctly
Console shows no obvious consistent event prior to freeze (based on frozen clock time). Console shows many functions continue to operate while screen is frozen (backupd is the most consistent).
Here's the pmset -g result from Terminal:
    iMac-Henry:~ henryten$ pmset -g
    Active Profiles:
    AC Power                    -1*
    Currently in use:
    hibernatemode        0
    halfdim              1
    womp                 1
    networkoversleep     0
    sleep                60
    powerbutton          0
    ttyskeepawake        1
    hibernatefile        /var/vm/sleepimage
    autorestart          0
    disksleep            10
    displaysleep         15
I've done the usual PRAM reset and Permission verifications.
I can post logs but wanted to set the stage first.
    Thanks!

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; } | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}' | open -f -a TextEdit
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Frozen iMac after reboot

    Hi everyone,
I need some help please. My iMac froze while trying to download some photos. I held down the power button to force reboot and at first it just went in to sleep mode. Then it finally reboot but was still frozen. I tried it again, and this time made a loud ringing noise for about 5 seconds and then it reboot but still frozen. I am not sure if I need to try in single user mode or safety mode, but the computer doesn't seem to respond when I try. Any suggestions
    Thank You!

Try to boot into Safe Mode by holding down Shift key and press power button to turn it on. Hold down the Shift key until you see a grey screen.
reset PRAM, instead of holding down Option key at startup, hold down Apple(Command) key + Option key + letter P + letter R keys and turn the computer on, holding down those keys until you see a grey screen or a couple beeps then let go.
Try to boot from Mac OS X disk by inserting the disk and hold down C key to boot into disk. Run the *Disk Utility* to repair the disk
If none of this works, you probably try to do a Archive & Install using the Mac OS disk. Just make sure you back up all the files and have applications' original installation disks ready. By performing Archive & Install you will preserve the data files on your machine however applications and other settings will be lost. Therefore you need all the original disks for all your applications you wanted to keep.

  • Slow or frozen iMac updates

I'm updating my iMac and it's been doing so for about 2 hours. It seem to be frozen. What should I do.

Shut it down by holding the power button for about 10 seconds and then restart.

  • Frozen iMac with Network problems

I have a 21.5 inch iMac purchased around Nov'12. Three days ago, suddenly no web page could be opened. I thought it to be a problem of my router but when I found out that I was able to use the Internet perfectly from my MacBook, I restarted my iMac but the problem remained. I shut it down & then restarted it... Now it showed only a white screen with the Apple logo on it and the waiting symbol. This remained till hours until I got irritated and switched off the power supply. I switched on the next consecutive days but the problem persisted. Today fortunately my iMac started.. The home screen has come... It is able to recognise my wifi & Ethernet but does not open any web page. Going to system preferences and then to Networks is hanging the system preferences window. When I force quit it, it says to file a report to Apple.... But the problem doesn't get solved... I always believed Apple as a company whose products never hanged up or faced hardware or software issues!!!

    Hello,
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions, reboot.
If you still have problems, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    10.4 instructions...
Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.

  • Frozen iMac not recognized as startup disc after reformat

So our iMac (Mountain Lion OS) was running slow, to a crawl, and after a restart would hang on the gray screen/ spinner. Several attempts to reboot were fruitless. The fan was blaring on reboot attempts. Tried then to boot in Safe Mode - which would also hang on the gray screen. Tried zapping PRAM (which resolved the fan issue), booting as Single or Verbose, etc.- none of this stuff seemed to work.
Eventually we were able to boot off a USB drive. Awesome. Went to Disc Utility. The Macintosh HD was "dimmed out" in the device list, however it was still selectable so we ran Verify... which it could not complete. It prompted us to Repair Disc. After hitting repair, it tells us the disc is not repairable and we need to reformat. Awesome.
Ran the reformat. No problems. Reinstalled system. No problems. Rebooted computer- hangs on gray screen AGAIN. Same deal running through the usual reboot scenarios. No dice. So we booted off the USB again. Ran the Verify/ Repair and all seems to check out fine. Go to startup disc to restart system- our harddrive does not even show up as a startup disc option!
I've been using Macs forever and never seen this one. Totally stumped. Any offers of help or ideas would be hugely appreciated. This iMac is only about 2.5 years old. Mostly used as a gaming system for the kids.
    Thanks
    a

Run Apple Hardware test in extended mode  a minimum of 3x back to back. If you receive hardware errors (as I anticipate) then you know you have a hardware issue. I suspect the HD is dying.  Because we don't know which iMac you own it's difficult to say if the HD is easy to replace or not. What I mean is if you own a 2009 or later iMac Apple began installing HD's that had fan sensors integrated into the HD, most off the shelf HD's don't have that feature. If you have 2009 or later machine then I'd recommend contacting OWC (www.macsales.com) to look for options. Your other option of course is to take the machine into your local Apple Store or AASP for a HD replacement.

  • Frozen iMac after initial powering up.

My iMac is getting through initial boot to diff account user login screen.  But, once logged in, the whole thing is freezing and not allowing any opening of any applications, software updates, etc.  All freezes, and I just get the spinning colored wheel.  Anyone have any ideas ???  It is running Lion.  Not sure which version.

Bmueller81, i have the same issue with my 27" iMac (Mid 2010).  I had the HDD replaced by Apple tech, problem persists.  Tried safe mode per rkaufmann87, problem persists.  Clean install, probelm persists.  No luck with any attempts to resolve.
The desktop loads, the apps that open automatically open, but the cursor is the spinning beach ball and this can last for up to 30 minutes.  Once the spinning beach ball is finally gone, the iMac operates as usual, no slowness to report or odd behaviour.
Running OS X 10.8.4 with all relevant updates current.

  • A frozen IMAC+ a Restart= Safari Itunes Iwork WONT WORK! HELP!

So recently I moved back into my parents home and my sister bought a router. She lives upstairs I live downstairs. When I tried to get internet recently it was successful. So I went to my Mac updates and I had 13 that needed to be performed. After the 13 loaded It asked to restart the computer and I eventually did. But then it started to reload them again. After awhile of me trying to hold the button down and shut the computer down manually I shut it down by shutting my power strip its connected to off and then on. But Now when i restart my computer the 1st screen that pops up states "The Application GoogleSoftwareUpdateAgent quit unexpectedly" and give me 3 options (To Relaunch,Restart, or Ignore) When I relaunch NOTHING happens or it'll take me to a screen that says the program "quit unexpectedly after it was relaunched and resetting the application settings may fix the problem" but when I click the reset and relaunch option still nothing happens.
Also, The programs IPages,Itunes,Ichat,Iwork, dictionary, and safari does not work and what works are things such as Final Cut, Folders on my desktop, a program called Mpeg stream clip, Just like random things work. I cant even do my software updates, it'll just give me the same screen with the same 3 options that dont work! WHat has happened? Did I lose my iPages work? Did I lose the internet? Did the 13 programs Not finish installing is this why this is happening? Do i have to reboot somehow? SOme one please help!. Iam very confused Thank you immensly for reading!

well, When I called earlier today I talked to an Apple Rep. And even though he could only trouble shoot with me Because It cost $ to endulge deeper, It seems that the one solid thing here is that its a software issue not hardware.
It's probably a disk corruption, but that's not a certainty. It can be hardware. Disk blocks can and do fail, and can lead to just these sorts of symptoms, for instance.
I made a new user and logged onto my computer that way and still, the same things dont work (i tunes I work etc.) So your saying to start fresh?
I'm suggesting to first create a backup of your existing (corrupt?) boot disk. Then wipe the disk. Then install. Then reload. Yes. With the backup of your boot disk to an external USB or firewire drive, you can (once the operating system is reloaded) potentially pull over files from the (corrupt?) disk. You'll also then have a disk device you can potentially use as a target for future Time Machine backups, as well.
wipe clean and start fresh. I mean should I even take it to a apple dealer in this situation?
That's entirely your call. Troubleshooting this stuff remotely isn't easy; I'm making a number of assumptions (guesses) around what happened here, and what sort of recovery might be appropriate.
And through a wired connection do u mean Like a phone line? thank you again.
No. You're (probably) connected on a WiFi (wireless networking) router when you refer to "router". There are various and very different sorts of devices correctly and incorrectly called "routers", and I'm guessing you're referring to a WiFi router here. Most WiFi routers will have a wired connection into the ISP; a DSL or cable modem wire are among the more common connections. These are wired connections. Most WiFi routers also have additional (wired) ports. WiFi is subject to interference. If you've had problems with the wireless network connection, a wired connection can be more reliable.

  • Frozen screen on imac 20"

    hello,
i installed diablo2 on my comp yesterday, it worked fine for me. a lil jerky when in a crowd of monsters. anyhow my friend was playing while i left the room. when i came back he said the comp froze when he tried to save and exit diablo2. i tried pushing different buttons to turn off the comp but only managed to sleep it. i finally had to physically pull the plug from the power outlet. after it restarted it seems fine. is there a way to power down a frozen imac without pulling the power cord out? im sure its bad for the comp. thanks for any help
    jeff

    Hello,
The following article summarizes all the options you have available to try if that happens again:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107199
There are many ways out of frozen programs, and several things you can try to shut it down safely.
    I hope this helps.

  • Just had problem with frozen up Mac computer corrected, now HP printer will not print.  Says printer not connected.  What is wrong?  Everyday a new problem., help.

JJust had problem corrected due to frozen imac, now HP printer will not print.  Says it is not connected.  What do I do to fix it?

    To reset the printing system:
Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
Choose Print & Scan from the View menu.
Hold down the Option key while clicking the "-" (Remove printer) button. If no printers are currently added, hold down the Control key while clicking in the box that appears above the "+" (Add printer) button, then choose Reset printing system… from the contextual menu.
When you've done the above you'll need to re-add the printer by clicking the + (Add printer)

  • Why does Yosemite slow Imac as well as MacBook Air?? Any Idea for a solution??

I have installed Yosemite on my iMac as well as on my MacBook Air.
Both now boot very very slow.
I regard this as a big disadvantage.
    Does Apple have a solution?
If if would have known of this problem in advance I wouldn't have updated on Yosemite!!

As far as I've observed the long boot times on both machines running now Yosemite is the only major problem.
However, trying to delete an additional user on the iMac (under Yosemite) lead to a frozen iMac. So the only solution was to finally switch of the iMac manually from power supply and start it again. However, then it worked.

  • Help. computer froze while installing iwork08

    Hi
I'm really new to mac computers and I don't know how to fix a frozen imac. I bought it a few weeks ago and today i installed iwork08. I went to view the iwork tour and my computer froze and went to this dark screen with a gray box in the middle with the apple logo in the middle of this box. I don't know how to get out of this as nothing i do gets me out of this. I have no clue how to deal with this and help would be much appreciated! thanks

Hi and welcome to Apple Discussions!
The screen display you describe is not a common one,
and I'm not sure why the computer did that; but for a
start, you could see if starting the computer up from
off (press power button until the computer shuts off)
and after the start tone, hold the Shift key down; &
keep holding it down until after you get a screen with
your login window. This should say SafeBoot, in it too.
    Login, and let the computer desktop continue to form;
and then choose GO in the Finder menu bar, click on
Utilities folder, and when that opens, find Disk Utility,
and open it. Choose in Disk Utility the click on item
'repair disk permissions' and let it run through until
done, then quit Disk Utility. Restart the computer from
the menu beneath the blue Apple, and hope it boots.
You may have to use the OS X software disc1 that
came with the computer (a DVD) and start the Mac
from that system boot disc, to try and use a different
version of Disk Utility accessed in a menu bar option
beneath the Installer's menu bar once that disc boots
the computer. To boot from this system disc, you'd
need to hold the C key down on startup. Do not run
the Installer itself, the optional items are in a menu
that drops down from the main Installer header if
you click on the words along the top. Disk Utility is
among the options there. (To exit D.U., after running
'repair disk' - and also - 'repair disk permissions' you
would choose startup disk from a menu option.)
...If you have a wireless bluetooth keyboard, this may
not be possible. A USB keyboard is the best tool in
using keyboard commands on bootup or to run these
kinds of things. If you have a BT keyboard, get a USB.
{There is a way to run some system items from behind
the GUI by using something called 'single user mode'
but that is a bit deep for a first time user and better
    looked into before you have an issue, to learn about it.}
I'm not sure all of what could've been behind this issue,
or the resulting screen; and there may be something else
going on there. Most of that is uncharacteristic of Mac
OSX. There are preventative maintenance routines that
    should become a second nature to using this system;
and they will come with time. They forgo some issues.
In most cases, before and after installing software and
also when installing updates or upgrades to the system,
you would 'repair disk permissions' using the computer's
installed Disk Utility as found in the Applications folder
and inside that, the Utilities Folder. (To use GO is faster.)
If this works, to boot into SafeBoot, run Disk Utility's
repair disk permissions, and restart normally, that'd be
good. Otherwise, you could try several other things.
Including attempting to boot from the system installer
disc1 and choose Disk Utility from that Installer's menu
bar (drop down menu options) the use 'repair disk' and
also after that is run, use 'repair disk permissions.'
If there is a report of an error note that and run the
same choice one more time, to get a clear report.
When those are done, and if there are no bad things
in the resulting report window (just stuff fixed, etc)
then choose to restart from startup disk in the Mac's
own system, and see what happens...
To post here, what computer did you use? A Mac?
A helpful tool to have and use as part of a preventative
routine is free, and accesses the system's own tools
to run them from a nicer user interface; the one I like
runs free and is called OnyX. Titanium Software's site
has links to download the correct version for your OSX.
I have mine set to automatically restart after running a
selection I make from that tool's Automation section.
The preferences in there can be customized, also.
    Good luck & happy computing!
