Frozen imovie

My iMovie is frozen. It keeps quitting unexpectedly. I canʻt see any video clips and none of the tools work. How do I fix this?

Thanks Sue... Not sure what happened but I downloaded a software update last night (in UK) and it seems to have cleared itself.. I have made note of the advice however as I am sure it will come in useful in the future! I am a new iMac convert... Well pleased with it so far but yet to get into HDV video editing... Gone for final cut express as imovie 8 doesn't really seem up to it!

  • Frozen Imovie Projects.  Read other topics still can't fix problem

I have a really important Imovie project that I don't particularly want to start over on because it was so perfect but if I must I will. But this project for working fine but all of a sudden I can't edit it, play it, or even browse through it. The playhead it stuck at the beginning of the movie. I cannot add or remove any footage, music, or transitions. i can't even right click and delete the projects. But I can with my other projects. I've been having this problem for months with certain projects and the project is only two minutes long. I tried taking the advice of someone with a similar problem. I went into Library/preferences and deleted the "com.apple.imovie8.plis" file and it refreshed my Imovie once I did that but it didn't solve the problem of the frozen project. Does anyone have any idea of what else I could try doing?

  • Help, iMovie has quit working. It just freezes when opened.

I put my many projects in a different folder because iMovie 11 was freezing and I couldn't accomplish anything.  I put 1 project in at a time and it worked great for 5-6 projects.  Then I wanted to combine 5 projects into one.  To do that I found if I put the 5 projects in iPhoto I could then find them in the event library window and drag them to the project area, edit the volume and export to iTunes as one movie.  However, now putting one project in the project folder results in nothing but a frozen iMovie I have to force quit.  Oh yea, you have to close iMovie and reopen it to get the new project to show up or at least that worked for awhile.  I trashed the preference for iLife and cleaned up premissions.  Any other ideas to get the thing to work and loose  the spinning ball....?

*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try

  • IMovie freezing on Mac Book Air

My daughter imported a file into an iMovie project. It's frozen iMovie. I have deleted the project from her Movie folder, but iMovie is still freezing (pinwheel). iMovie works fine when we switch users, but continues to freeze when she tries to open it. Is there any way of fixing this? iLife came with the Mac Book Air, so there's no other way to reinstall this as far as I'm concerned.

I assume you are referring to "Airplay Mirroring" as Airplay works just fine.
Here is the info on Airplay Mirroring.

  • Photos do not appear in imovie 11. black screen with frozen movie clip

Imovie 11 Photos do not appear in the movie a black screen for picture in picture or a frozen screen with sound and no photo

    Yes
    There is one possibility
    • AVI or .avi is no Video Format/Codec - it is a container and usually contains something iMovie can not use OK.
Open it with QuickTime-player and then open inspector (cmd+I) and read
    • Video Format/Codec: nnnnnnnnnnnnn
What does it read ? (all of it)
from wife Nikon D300s I read
    Yours the same ?
    Either I would
    • import it into iPhoto and in iMovie import from title iPhoto Movies at top in Events window - or
    • convert it into streamingDV .dv or AIC and use this.
AND - my read 24fps - I would convert this to PAL 25fps or to NTSC 29.97 (if for US) by JES_Deinterlacer.

IMovie HD movie has no Play buttons.. partially frozen/ please help. It is only with a particular movie which is both on an external hard drive and on the computer.

    Hi
there are two - most probably origin to this
    • use of strange media eg .avi, .wmv .mp4 etc.
(not from miniDV tape Camera - as iMovie up to HD6 is made for)
Convert video to - streamingDV and
audio to .aiff 48kHz 16-bit (no .mp3 etc)
    • corruption - eg iMovie pref file or preferences
    Trash iMovie plist file
    Repair Permissions
    Usually helps here

  • Whilst working on iMovie my screen has frozen. Cannot use any menus or dock icons. Tried turning off but asks am I sure. If I press shut down button it doesn't respond. Any ideas?

Cannot use any menus or dock icons. Tried turning off computer but message appeared asking 'am I sure'. If I press shut down button it doesn't respond. Any ideas? I was dropping multiple  clips into my movie/project when it happened.  It has been frozen for over an hour now. I can't hear the driving doing any work.

Thanks a lot. I had previously held the power button down and up popped the 'are you sure' message whhich provided a shut down button to press but it didn't work. Thanks for you help. I'll have a look in iMovie now to see if I've got any corrupted files. Thanks a lot

  • IMovie to iDvd problem /frozen frame on DVD

i produce many videos with iMovie and iDVD every day. the imported video footage via different cameras like sony cx105 or panasonic sdr 150 works fine and i can see the footage without problems in iMovie. after editing and rendering in iMovie, sending the footage to iDVD i can see that sometimes, while encoding the footage in iDVD the video footage freeze but iDVD finish the whole procedure. later while watching the dvd the movie runs for a while and than suddenly the video freeze at one frame but the audio continues.
this happens in around 15 burned dvd 1 times. if i try to start the whole iMovie project again and sending it to iDVD after rendering and even by cutting the frozen frame shot out the same thing happens again.it seems that there is somehow an error while importing the footage from the sd card or camera into the computer iMovie. the following error message comes up:
    21.06.09 12:00:15 [0x0-0x10010].com.apple.iMovie8[102] Error: MPEG2Decompressor[0x1f3f8a50]: bad picturecodingtype (number = 85, size = 148628)

Most probably iDVD pref file - trash it - or even better start a new User-account

I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,

  • IMovie 2014 frozen at startup... tried everything, can't find "preferences" file in Library

Hi there. I have never had any problems with iMac until a few days ago. It freezes at startup.
Nothing turns up in Preferences under Library. There's no "com.apple.imovie" anything. No "iMovie" files. So nothing I can delete there.
    I've repaired permissions.
I deleted iMovie. I reinstalled iMovie.
I tried deleting "RobWedding001" without emptying the trash, and loading the program up.
I've tried just letting the program loading and it's still frozen.
I've restarted my computer to see if anything would happen.
    I'm stumped.

    Hi
You say: problems with iMac until a few days ago. It freezes at startup.
Is this when Yo start-up Your Mac from being turned OFF
or is it when You try to start iMovie ?
If first one - I would go to Apple-Shop/Genius and get help.
If iMovie - Try to start it - BUT NOW KEEP alt-key and cmd-key down during upstart.
You ara aware of that there are at least two kinds of Libraries on You Mac
    - Root level Library - the one You find when opening Macintosh HD (or Boot Hard Disk - first window)
    - User Library - Hidden - and the one where You find the faulty referens files.
On top row menu (Apple symbol top Left hand Corner
followed by Finder / Archive / Edit / Content / Go / Window / Help
Select Go and now keep alt-key down - and in some versions of Mac OS X.7 onwards - the User Library link will show up.

  • Frozen Interface in iMovie 8

My interface has frozen. Everything still works with iMovie (like I can play my project, open it up, and edit clips), but I can't see what I'm doing. The clip preview works, but the timeline and the event library are frozen. Any idea of what's wrong?

  • IMovie is frozen on screen! Help Please??

Hi...I'm in a fix. I'm on deadline with a project and iMovie has been "frozen" for over an hour. Nothing responds. I think I might have over-taxed it with two screens with the same show on them and where I have been moving some clips from one to the other to make the one small enough to burn a DVD with iDVD. That said, my MacBook Pro is at 11 GB and when I dump the trash, I only get one or two GB at the most. What now?? Does anyone know anything at all that I can do to get my iMovie up and running? I am in such a mess if not. Someone is waiting with check in hand and lots of attitude. Help?
    Thankks for any ideas.  Kate

Hi GeeD, thanks for responding. No, I meant that when I empty my trash most of the GB's in the trash disappear. Example: Let's say I have 10 GB and my trash has100GB, so I dump the trash to build my workable GB's and I will only get about 15 GB's out of the 100! What the heck is that??
I'm using iMovie HD 6.0   I learned the hard way that the project I did was waaaay to big and busy for iMovie. At least this one. I finally got it free'd up and burned my DVD's with Toast. No jiggling in the final version, thank goodness.
Thanks so much for helping. Take good care, Kate

  • Imovie frozen on something i have done

i was trying to import some videos(avi) into imovie and I go the color WAIT wheel. Now everytime I open imovie the WAIT wheel comes back and I can't do anything. I have to "force quit" to get out of the program. I have shut down the computer and it just comes back. really frustrating. What can I do to stop the WHEEL of death??
    thanks

Ok. imovie doesn't support AVI files. But how do I get it (the program) unfrozen so I can use it again.
I would like to convert the files and use iMovie again, but it is still frozen with the color wheel and I can't use it.

  • My imovie is frozen how do i fix it

it has been frozen for 2 day now
it won't let me log in or out of accounts
it says it is 'generating a thumbnail'
i have tried right clicking on icon and 'quit'
also turning it off for a day and turning it back on,
    HELP

Hello! I would first recommend trying Option+Command+Escape. This is the "force quit" which will let you end whichever programs you want immediately. Try opening iMovie again after this. From the looks of it, it seems as though you have just had iMovie open for the whole time and never quit it successfully, am I correct?

  • IMovie has frozen up on me. I've tried rebooting and reinstalling the apps- no help. I can play some of the files- but I can't get into the libraries.Even when I can get something to play the whole system crashes after a few minutes. What can I do?

I desperately need your help. I was working on iMovie last night when the thing froze up on me. I've tried rebooting. I've tried reinstalling the apps. No change. I can play some of the files- although I can't tell which ones will play until they magically appear. I can't get into the project library or the event library. The bar that lets me scroll through the clips is gone. Even when I can get something to play the whole system crashes after a couple of minutes and generates a "problem report" that says "iMovie Quit Unexpectedly". This all started when I was adding cutaways- and one clip just would not load. After I tried several times everything froze up. Have you ever heard of something like this? Maybe I pushed a button or somehow changed a setting? Maybe some of the video is corrupt? What do you recommend?
Thanks for any advice you can offer!

I have tried all the above and nothing seems to work. Any other suggestions?
