Frozen Macbook

My macbook is frozen, and rebooting doesn't help.  I can move mouse, but nothing happens.  Can anyone give advice?  Do I need to take it to a service center?

Do you have the OS 10.6 disks. or any utility software like Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro? Post back if you do.
If you don't have any of these disks you have not much chance of doing any trouble shooting by yourself, so take the MB into an Apple store.

  • Grinding Noise and Frozen Macbook

Last night I was awoken out of a sound sleep by a loud grinding noise coming out of my MacBook. This was not a 'hum' or a 'buzz' this was a full nuclear invasion Alert! When I investigated, the Macbook was frozen. The screen was on but the keyboard and mouse were unresponsive. I did a hard reboot (what else was there) and it returned to its happy little self.
I'm worried that this is a failing harddrive. Anyone else have an experience like this? I have an appointment w/ the Genius Bar but I'm not really interested in four hours on the road to get their opinion if they can't do anything until the computer completely dies.
PS. There was NO kernel panic.

A couple of things to try...
    1. Run the Disk Utility directly from the DVD. Verify and repair permissions and then verify the drive. See if you get any errors and report back.
    2. Run the Apple hardware test, also from the DVD.
    3. Reset the PRAM and the SMC. Apple has outlined how to do this on their site.
If none of these things show any errors, that doesn't mean it can't happen again. I'm starting to think these hard drives in the MacBooks are flimsy and bad updates don't help either.

  • Frozen Macbook pro in Mavericks 10.9.2

Hi, I need a solution, my macbook pro retina is is frozen occasionally, this happens from that updates to version 10.9.2 before had never happened.
the specs of my macbook are:
macbook pro retina 15, late 2013
    2ghz intel core i7
    intel iris pro 1gb
    8gb ram
    someone else does this happen?
    thanks in advance!

I have a macbook pro that refuses to get past the start up screen without freezing. Luckily i have a 10.8 partition i can still use, but my mavericks partition (which i need for work) always freezes.
    Have tried:
    fresh reinstall of mavericks
starting in safe mode (still freezes)
    repairing permissions
    resetting PRAM
    Mavericks is truly hideous.

  • Frozen macbook pro13

Bought macbook pro 13 with retina. already frozen had to do hard restart. pretty shame. how to prevent it freezing?

If you can get the MacBook Pro to start up into FireWire Target Disk mode by holding down the T key at startup, yes. Double-click the MacBook Pro's hard disk in the eMac's Finder, and then make the desired modifications to your home folder on the MacBook Pro's hard disk.

  • Frozen Macbook Air transferring information

    HI
First time on here so be gentle, please!
I was setting up my new MacBook Air and was transferring information over from my iMac and my wi-fi cut out.
Since then I have had the transferring information box saying "cancelling migration.." under a minute to go for the past few hours!
I haven't a clue how to escape from what is, effectively, a frozen scheme
    Can anyone help, please?

Which version of OSX are you running? If it is Lion, startup in disk recovery mode, by holding command-R during the startup process.
Select and run Disk Utility. If Disk Utility can see the OSX parition, do a Disk Verify and Repair.
If not, report back here for more advice on how to proceed.

  • Completely Frozen Macbook!

My 13" Macbook Pro has been working flawlessly for over a year now, but today, I tried to eject my disk and it didn't even register that I hit the eject button. I then tried to restart my computer but it wouldn't even turn off. I quit all the applications beforehand but it didn't work. It then told me to relaunch Finder and now my computer is completely frozen. I have no idea what to do and I need help as soon as possible! I'm desperate!

Press the Power button for about 10 seconds.
    Hopefuly computer will shut down.

I just bought a new 15" MacBook Pro. After I dowloaded all updates, it asked me to restart it. I did so, but I just can't boot the system up. I can hear the sound at the start and then all I can see is the gray apple and the spinning wheel. It just won't move from there. What is wrong with it?

  • Frozen Macbook desktop?

Hey I have Recently Installed Lion on my Macbook pro and untill recently i have had no problems Changing my desktop Wallpaper. Now whenever i try to change it, it will freeze up in system preferences and manually nothing will happen at all. Help!

Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Help with frozen MacBook

My MacBook froze and did a Manuel shoot down and now it won't do an internet recovery it come up with a message "-2000F" what do I do?

That means you either have no Internet connection or are trying to use Internet Recovery with a pre-2010 model.
What you can try is this:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Frozen MacBook Pro after Wake

So up until now I have had no issues with my MBP. Oddly enough today I was using Safari and closed the lid while it was running. I opened up the lid and the computer awoke but remained in a frozen state. No keyboard, no mouse, and no spinning ball. The only thing i was able to do was hold the power button to do a hard shut off. I can turn the computer back on without a problem. I have tried changing my power setting so that the hard drives do not go into sleep mode but this hasn't helped. Also did a new install which also didn't fix the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Pixelated/frozen MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010)

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) is about 3 years old and for some odd reason, the screen becomes pixelated and won't function properly. I read that it could possibly be a problem with something called Nvidia, or it could have something to do with my graphics card failing, meaning I'd have to replace the whole board. I'm not quite sure what to do or even what it could be. I gathered that information from searches both on google, yahoo and on these discussions. Here are some photos of what my screen looks like when it acts up:
    Thanks in advance
    -Karina

I've got a mid-2010 MB pro 15" and I have exactly the same problem despite the fact I had a previous change of card on the computer but it still work badly. The crash is not the same, but I've got to reboot several times a day

  • Frozen Macbook (overheating?)

Heyy im running a Mid 2009 Macbook, below are my specs..
While running it recently it has been freezing and the screen will slowly brighten untill either it goes completely white or it manges to unfreeze (normally only for a few seconds..)
I download smcFanControl and after running my fan at 6000rpm i managed to keep my computer around 45°C and it seems to run fine..
Without the fan on so fast the computer will freeze within 2 minutes of using it.. anyone else had anything like this before?
It had not happened until I started running Lion..
Processor  2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C40) *beta*
    <Serial Number Edited by Host>

They are called betas for a reason.
Back up your data, then look for threads in the Lion forum on how to reinstall.
    Best of luck.

  • Frozen macbook pro, wont turn off

The screen is frozen blue, with the white and black spinning loading icon. I've tried shortcuts and the power button. But it won't turn off. I've disconnected the power and let it die, but when I plug it back in, it resumes the blue screen. HELP

If pressing and holding the power button (for 5-10 seconds) does not work, then that means your system management controller (SMC) is in a hang of sorts. If your computer has a removable battery then unplug it from the wall and remove the battery to cut power to the system. Then perform a SMC reset on your system: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
