Frozen, need to open disc drive, help

my eMac G4 is frozen. I need to reload insert my software install and restore discs 10.3.3 1 and 2 and 10.4 and 10.4.4 but I don't know how to open the drive tray. The screen is frozen. What do I do? I've heard about using a paper clip but I don't see where to put it in. Please help.

Hi, pete and Thomas —
Welcome to Apple Discussions, pete.
Pete, I'm having some trouble discerning the specifics of your situation. There seem to be issue(s) with (1) how to deal with system unresponsiveness (screen/mouse "frozen"); (2) how to open the optical drive's door/tray; &/or (3) how to troubleshoot and address system problems. It'd help if you could clarify things.
For now, I'll try to restate &/or supplement Thomas' very sound advice a bit in each area.
  (1) System Unresponsiveness. As Thomas has said, the normal progression in this type situation is:
    (a) Unplug and re-plug your mouse and keyboard to make sure they're connected.
    (b) Try to ("soft") force-quit applications, using ⌘–option-Esc. If this doesn't work, try to ("soft") restart using ⌘–control–power key (if your keyboard is so equipped).
    (c) ("Hard") Force-quit to shutdown your Mac by pressing the power key for about 5 seconds. Note that this isn't recommended — because any interruption in writing to disk can create disk directory corruption problems — but sometimes there's no alternative.
    (d) Wait a few moments, then restart using the power button. Note that, in some situations, actually unplugging your Mac and waiting several minutes may be beneficial.
    (e) See (2) below for how to open the optical tray during startup. If you have start-up problems ("stuck" at blue screen, gray screen, etc.), please post back and describe in detail everything you observe. KnowledgeBase Articles 106464 and 106805 may help you to begin troubleshooting these problems — but we'll be happy to try and help with this.
  (2) If the optical drive door/tray is "stuck" in closed position.
    (a) Holding your mouse down during startup will open the optical-drive tray — as Thomas explained. Be sure to hold the mouse down from when startup is initiated until the drawer opens.
    (b) Is there a disc in your optical drive already? In the unusual circumstance when there's a disc stuck inside the drive, you'd have to mechanically open the drive door and tray. Very carefully. First, pry open the door with your fingernail. Then, you'll see a small hole below the tray on its left side. Inserting a straightened, large-size paper clip perpendicularly, you may be able to open the tray — but be careful as you probe for the release.
I've done this (the paper-clip method) with previous Macs I've owned, but haven't had any success with my eMac, probably because the door and hole position create a difficult angle. (Only needed to do it once.) In that instance, I was able to actually grasp the edge of the tray and pull gently until it began to open.
  (3) Troubleshooting System Problem? Depending on your response to (1)(e) above, I doubt it'd be helpful to pursue start-up problems further at the moment — because it's not clear that this is part of your frustration.
However, your comment that you "need to reload insert my software install and restore discs 10.3.3 1 and 2 and 10.4 and 10.4.4" is confusing, because I don't understand why you'd choose to reinstall OS X 10.x at this point, based on what you've described. The first thing I would recommend — once you've accomplished shutdown, restart, and opening the optical drive to insert your install disc — is to C-boot and run Disk First Aid from Disk Utility (access via the Utilities menu) to "repair disk" — then evaluate/post back your results. Please also note your HD's S.M.A.R.T. status that's listed in the lower right-hand corner of the Disk Utility dialogue box.
As I said at the outset, I'm probably confused about your specific issue(s) — so I hope you'll forgive what's redundant or extraneous in this reply. I'm hoping that something is "on-target," and thus helpful. If not, please post back...
Regards,
Dean

  • HP Pavilion dv6000 I need a recovery disc. Help

    Greetings,
I purchased a HP Pavilion dv6000 notebook about 7 or 8 years ago, and it recently crashed on me. Every time I turn it on it doesn't reach my sign window where I input my password, it only keeps on restarting itself. I seem to have lost my recovery and drivers disc and now, I need help acquiring another recovery disc.
The model of my notebook is:
    HP Pavilion d6000
    AMD Turion 64
    Windows XP
    s/n: {Removed for privacy}
    p/n: RG253UA#ABA
I need a recovery disc with the OS and drivers for my notebook. I am aware I will probably have to pay for one. Any help out there? Thanks in advance forum!

    Hi:
You have a HP Pavilion dv6105us Notebook PC.
You can try calling HP at one of these 2 numbers to see if you can get a set of recovery disks from them.
    800-474-6836 or 888-999-4747.
If you can't get them from HP anymore, you can get them from this 3rd party vendor for $27 + shipping.

  • Desperate need of External Hard drive help.

Bottom line, I need one that will work. I have been through a mess of external HD problems & I have looked at hundreds of drives on many sites & I just don't know which one I can trust. I have tried a few already, but they just didn't like working on a Mac (even though they are Mac recommended). If anyone can offer any kind of help, it would be greatly, greatly, greatly appreciated. Of course, we won't know how appreciative I am until it arrives & it actually works.
Here is what I am looking for. About 120GB capacity. Nothing over $110, but I am a little flexible. It will just be sitting on my desk, so it doesn't need to be ultra portable. I do not want to buy a regular hard drive & stick it in a case, it's what I have now & it has caused me so many problems. I have FireWave surround sound, so it would be nice if it was firewire (plugs into the back of the FireWave, which is tucked away, while the drive sits on the desk). Would prefer it not to be bus-powered, less cables coming out of my laptop, the better.
I have been through a lot with these products & it just seems like there isn't a great external hard drive that was meant for the MacBook Pro. Please, help me if you can. I need one very soon, the external I have now (the one in a case) is all screwed up & I can only access files when doing a data recovery, but I need another external to transfer the files onto, (I have very little space left on my internal). Thank you very much.

If your looking for something that looks great, works great, and is highly recommended, then I would suggest you look at a drive by G-Technologies. I have been using their drives for years and I have yet to have any issues at all. They do use a variety of drives in the cases, but their boards are what are great. They always receive at least 4 mice, if not 5 from MacWorld as well.
You might be a little hard pressed to get a drive right in your price range, but a smaller drive, such as the one your looking for, are a little harder to find unless they are 2.5" drives. Everything these days is getting bigger.

Oh, I should also note that their drives come with a 2 year warranty as well.

  • Need a boot disc & drives: Toshiba Satellite C650D-008

I deleted the backup partition that had the drives for my Toshiba Satellite C650D-008.
(To long a story to explain why.)
I had used the computer for a Linux O/S.
Now I want to load a retail -off the self-  version of Windows 7 I purchased.
If possible I would like a link to a web-site were I can download a boot disc and drivers for free.
(preferably without the bells and whistles, media etc. )
I have very poor bandwidth here so a bittorrent might be the best bet, along with hash code numbers.
The aforementioned machine is a Canadian Market model, and there does not seem to be a source
for drivers from Toshiba Canada's download site. (The Toshiba model I have is not shown on other
Toshiba download sites.)    ......... Thanks Tom.  ROC
    Spoiler (Highlight to read)

    Satellite C650D-008 (PSC0YC-008003)
Best to order the recovery discs by calling 800-663-0378.  You can upgrade Home Premium in just minutes this way.
Upgrade to another edition of Windows 7 by using Windows Anytime Upgrade
You'll find all the downloads for that model here. If you insist upon installing a retail version of Windows, don't be surprised when you have difficulty getting things to work right.

  • Help! Disc drive won't open

I have a Satellite P75-A7200 that is less than two years old.  My disc drive stopped working for no apparent reason.  I tried pushing into the little hole to the right of the button, but it won't open.  Can someone please help?  Do I need some kind of driver update?  Or is it just a physical problem? Thank you!

The paperclip or what ever you are putting in the hole to open the drive has to go in far enough to release the drive, mine goes in around 3/4 of an inch you should feel the door release, then it should open.

  • I need to create a second back-up of iPhoto from Time Machine to a separate external drive.  The old iPhoto in TM will not open.  Please help!

I need to create a second back-up of iPhoto from Time Machine to a separate external drive.  The old iPhoto in TM will not open.  Please help!  And thank you!

    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

my keynote has frozen and wont open but the saved version wont open either. if i restart my laptop i am afraid that it will erase my work. please help me

Try this repair for Keynote 6.2,  ensure you complete all the tasks and in the order shown:

delete all the iWork applications if you have them, not just Keynote, using Appcleaner from Mac Update, its a freeware application

empty the trash:  Finder > Empty Trash

Shut down your Mac, wait 30 seconds, then power on the Mac, immediately after the start chime, hold down the Shift key
When you see the grey Apple symbol and progress indicator (a spinning gear), release the Shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, then hold down the Shift key again as you click Log in.
Let the Mac fully boot up, it will take longer as the OS is repairing the drive
    4
when fully booted, go to Applications > Utilities > Disc Utility; click on the boot drive then First Aid tab and click  repair disc permissions
    5
when complete, restart the Mac normally, Apple menu > Restart

install Keynote from the Mac App Store

  • Optical disc drive will not open

    Hi there,
All of a sudden my disc drive will not open. Neither will it open when rebooting and ejecting it before windows has finished start-up. I've checked power cables etc. etc. I do see the drive in Windows Explorer, and there are no mentions of driver issues or whatsoever. Can anyone help?
    product: hp pavilion p7 1040nl
    operating system: windows 7
error message when trying to open drive in explorer (front button doesn't work): An error occurred while ejecting 'DVD/CD-RW drive'

Open Device manager, expand DVD/CD-rom drives
right click on your dvd drive and select "uninstall", then reboot your PC, windows will reinstall the device, see if it opens now.
If it still will not eject, take a small paper clip that has been straigtened out and slide it in the eject hole on the drawer front, see if it will open this way, doing this will check to see if it is jammed. If it opens with the paper clip and the drawer works smoothly then there is something wrong with the drive itself and will need replaced

  • Do I need an OS Disc to restore my macbook after I upgrade the hard drive?

I need to upgrade the hard drive in my 2009 macbook. I have a Time Capsule. I'm not clear on whether I need to install OS on the new drive using a disc, or whether I can do that from the Time Capsule? The issue is that my disc drive is broken, and I don't really want to replace it as I never use discs in it anyway. But i don't want to get stuck with a new hard drive and be unable to get an operating system on it.

    I prefer this process:
How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive.  Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure.  You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the external drive.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
      1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
      2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of
the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive
is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  Otherwise, click on the
Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from
the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended
(Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to
GUID  then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and
wait until the process has completed.
      4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the
drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main
          window.
      5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the
Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to
          return to the Erase window.
      6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several
hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
      1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
      5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Destination entry field.
      6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Source entry field.
      7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume.  Click on the Restart button.  You should boot from the new drive.  Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.
However, you could simply reinstall OS X on the new drive after prepping it, the restore all your files from your Time Machine backup.
Hard to say what if any other options there may be since you haven't told us what version of OS X is in use and backed up to your Time Capsule (and if it is a full system backup.)

  • Disc drive won't open after update...

Just noticed my disc drive won't open using the eject key...I can open tray with toast and disc will mount and eject it.. but eject key won't work...have repaired permissions after the updates... one was for bluetooth which I don't have installed..other was security...
Any suggestions or help would be appreciated..

What system do you have? From what I read it looks as if you haven't yet installed 10.4.3.
Try (re-)installing 10.4.3 using the combined upgrade.
Oops... I just saw you indcated you are running 10.3.7. Any reason you did not upgrade to 10.3.9? My advice to reinstall the combined update to the latest system still holds
Before that, just to be safe (one never knows) don't forget to backup!
