Frozen screen and alarm after startup

I have older laptop in the Satellite series running XP.  When it starts up it will load the blue Toshiba screen but then freezes and will go no further.  There is also a continuous "ding,ding,ding......" alarm sound.  The F2 and F12 keys produce no change, nor does the "c key" when I try to install the system restore disc (starts to load and then stops). Response is the same whether running on battery or ac.  Anyone know what all the above means?  Many thanks!

Try this:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Let the battery fully darain. After charging for an least an hour try a reset and restore. Use Recovery mode if necessary.
If not successful, then time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

My iPod touch is alternating between a white screen and the apple startup logo. Is it done for?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

    Try option/command/R
Don't press it until you hear the chime, don't release it until you see recovery loading, don't press other random combinations unless you know what they do.

Grey screen and ? after updating my Mac Book Air?
    What next please?
    Anyone else had this problem?

Something appears to have gone wrong while running the updater. Use the MacBook Air's original thumbdrive or the recovery partition(if it's running 10.7 or newer) to repair the internal drive or install a new OS.

  • Screen flashing grey after startup and no status bar

Recently, whenever I try on my mac for the first few minutes after the startup, the screen starts flashing to grey and back.
After the flashing stops, I got no status bar. I can still press the buttons there (Wifi, Bluetooth, etc) but cannot see them (as seen in image).
Does anyone have any clue what it might be?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Xorg / catalyst / kernel upgrade - Frozen screen and input [SOLVED]

I knew it, never upgrade xorg/graphic drivers when using ATI cards, just bless your god when it works and never touch it again. But I got tempted and I did a full system upgrade, and now... my xorg is broken.
I'm using ATI proprietary drivers catalyst 8.12-1 with xorg 1.5.3-3. My card is an ATI x1950 pro.
It used to work perfectly, but since the update, when i startx I just get a terminal (because of my .xinitrc) in fullscreen without my window manager getting launched, and my mouse in the middle of the screen; and nothing responds the mouse won't move, even ctrl+alt+backspace won't work. I have to ssh on my machine and 'killall X'.
I tried starting off with a default config (using aticonfig --initial -f), but still the same problem.
I have a dual screen setup.
I disabled AIGLX and Composite, but no success.
If I fail to repair this, since I made a backup of my pacman database, I could revert it right ?
Please help us, us pwned ATI users !

edit: weird thing (or not) but DPMS (or whatever it is, the thing that turns off my monitor after some time) seems to work, altough moving the mouse or pressing the keyboard doesn't wake up the screen. Has this something to do with my mouse and keyboard not being recognized by xorg ?
edit2: omg yes it is ! I added:
    urxvtc -e 'screen'
so when I startx an un-window-managered fullscreen terminal launches with a screen session, and if I ssh on it I can type in this terminal from another computer, and the screen actually displays what I'm typing, so that's definitely an input problem !
Final Edit: Well all solved, concerning the "frozen" stuff, it was just that my keyboard and mouse weren't detected because of the new hotpulg thingy (check http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … otplugging for more info, or just add 'hal' to your rc.conf), then restored my original xorg.conf, rebooted and it all went back to normal (: ). Hope this helps.

Hmm, I wonder what it would reveal if someone read the news? http://www.archlinux.org/news/424/
Even your Xorg.0.log is telling you the problem.

  • Random frozen screen and shutdowns

    Hi,
I'm working on a 2009 Mac Pro updated to 5.1 with a new six core cpu and a EVGA mac version GTX 680. I randomly have a frozen screen, but I can access the mac via network. Sometimes the mac reboots it self. Temperatures seem normal (cpu 37 degrees) This problem allready occured using 10.8. Normally at start up I have to stress the GPU to lower the pci fan. Starting at 1300rpm after running GLview test running at 800rpm
    I allready:
    - replaced the GPU from slot 1 to 2 and vice versa
    - Replaced the GPU for a pc GTX670 same problem
    - cleaned the machine
    - Took everything out and put it back again
    - Did a complete new system install on a new drive
    - Did anvram reset
    - Did asmc reset
    etc
When I go back to my old ati 4870 I don't have this problems. So I think it's the card or the drivers. Can anyone make something out of this crash log?
    tia

  • MacBook Pro hanging with blue screen and spinner after installing Software Update

Hi I was wondering if someone could help me with this current issue. Just a few hours ago I finished reinstalling Mac OS X Snow Leopard in my MacBook Pro. I performed a clean installation as part of a yearly spring cleaning that I do on all my systems to keep them optimized. So there was I downloading some software updates which included the combo update of OSX 10.6.8 and others. The updates finished downloading and the system logged out to install the updates, when the updates finished installing my MacBook proceeded by logging out into a blue screen and show a gray spinner similar to the one seen when you start your Mac. Here's the problem after 2 hours the system is showing the spinner and the blue screen, I think that my computer has just hanged in the reboot process.
I was wondering what should I do? Do a force restart? Or leave it overnight?
Also, where can I find any information on what error is causing this issue?
I appreciate your responses and help.
By the way, I installed Mac OS X from a USB stick that has the original image of the disk installer that came bundled with my computer.

Force a shutdown. Do not restart yet, but first do the following:
    Repair the Hard Drive
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Next, boot into Safe Mode then restart normally.
    Hi Kappy,
Checked the hard drive after forcing a shutdown and booting from my Snow Leopard Installer USB Key and the status of the HDD says "Verified". I ran the repair and the volume was repaired successfully. Clicked on "Verify Disk" and it says "Macintosh HD appears to be OK". So I ran a second repair and again no errors were reported.
As suggested I booted back again in Safe Mode and restarted normally. All software appears to have been installed successfully. But I don't understand why my computer hanged and showed the spinner after installing the updates in the blue screen that appears just before rebooting. I am aware that the system shows that spinner after a OS update but the longest it lasts is 30 seconds at the most in my previous cases.

  • Vista Black screen with Cursor after Startup

Recently, I had a crash in a Skype call with someone, and everything went downhill from there really. I started up my computer again, and I was able to get past the welcome screen, and to a black screen with a cursor. I tried opening up task manager, it
didn't work at the time, and eventually after my computer freezing up, I shut it off, and this time windows wanted to run check disk. So I let it, I was able to get in this time but I got a blue screen saying REGISTRY_ERROR. I was freaking out badly now, thinking
my entire system might be corrupted, but I wouldn't give up easily.
I started it up in safe mode, which surprisingly worked. I had a boost in moral at this point, because all my files also loaded. I started windows normally. I had the black screen thing again, but after a while I had a program pop up. I proceeded to open
    task manager.
It opened up, and I ended the old explorer process (which was using a very small amount of memory at the time, if that matters at all) and loaded up a new one. This one worked. I am currently posting this on the same computer that has the issue.
I seen others who had similar issues, but I could open task manager and start up explorer.exe, so I am a special snowflake among these other ones.
I don't quite know what a good way of going about the issue would be, should I system restore? Is there a problem with the shell? I don't exactly know what I should do, any sort of information should help.
    Some other possibly unrelated things:
Recently, my driver has been crashing (should I update that, is that the reason this is happening?)
My files are all intact, I saved important ones. What should I do?

Nevermind. I took matters into my own hands and it took only a single system restore to fix the issue!
    Crisis averted!

  • AHHHHHHH!!!!!!! frozen screen and reset loop of death.....

ok so my iphone froze the other day...i hit all kinds of buttons and nothing would work until i used the slee/home button reset...it worked but then a few mins later i pushed the sleep button to wake up the phone and the screen flashed many multicolored vertical lines (sort of like when your tv loses reception)and then proceeded to fully reset the phone bringing up the apple icon and finally to the home screen...when i use the phone from there everything works fine, or even if i hit the sleep button to turn it off and then i hit it again to turn it right back on im fine, however if i leave it "asleep" for about a minute or so and then try and wake it up...the whole process repeats with the horrible screen and reset...i've tried all the resets in the phone with and without erasing content, and i even tried the restore once but still it's jacked up....any thoughts? has anyone heard of this?

I managed to give my phone these symptoms, but as I'd just made a settings change, I managed to switch it back and the problem went away:
I set Mail to automatically check for messages, rather than only manually.
As soon as I exited the system preferences, the phone froze. It would then come back for a few seconds, then freeze again.
I couldn't switch the phone off, and when the unlock screen appeared, the "slide to unlock" text didn't "pulse" like it normally does.
The on-off button took me to the home screen (for some reason) and, by waiting after each "button" press for 10secs for it to take effect, i managed to switch back to manual email checking.
As soon as I did this, the problem disappeared.
I don't know if this relates in any way to your problem, but you never know...
    good luck.

Press and hold the Home and Power buttons for 15-20 seconds until the white Apple logo appears to reset the device.

  • Black screen and beeps at startup

hi, my macbook pro is two months old. Today when I tried to start it up, I have encountered a black screen and a series of beeps. Beeps are regular with 3 seconds of intervals. I counted it up to 13 and it was continuing. Flash led is accompanying the beeps. No additional hardware is plugged in or no new software is set up. I searched the problem a bit, but no solution or advice is helpful. cdrom sounds but does not respond, any key combination does not work. I will take it to the service but beforehand I want to ask you people if anyone has an idea. Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Here is an article on the beeps and flashing lights:

  • Mac cycling through blue startup screen and desktop after installing app...

Hi again folks! I'm hoping I can pick your brains on this one, as it's got me scratching my head here...
My fiance just accidentally installed a 64bit version of Handbrake on her white macbook (running Leopard 10.5.8, I believe). The battery on her macbook is completely drained (to the point where it won't hold a charge at all), so she has to keep the laptop plugged in at all times. Supposedly (I wasn't actually there for this event), the laptop got unplugged during installation of this 64 bit app.
When she plugged the laptop back in, it boots into the desktop for about 1 second and the goes back to the blue screen for about 6 seconds, and then back to the desktop... rinse and repeat.
Now I've tried getting her to do a safeboot, which appears to do something similar (she gets the Safeboot login screen, except when she tries to login in, it just kicks her back to the login screen.)
What to do? I'm in another city right now (go figure) and can't actually fix it for her other than providing directions to her. I will have access to the laptop by sometime tomorrow, so I can take a shot at fixing it from there...
Does anybody have any suggestions of things to try in the meantime?
Seems to me, if it's just a matter of having a 64bit app installed on a 32 bit kernel, this should be relatively easy to fix... yes? Thanks for reading.

I would do the disk repair to start. If the drive is OK then you may be able to do the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
