Frozen screen during reset.

The iPod stopped in mid song. I could move through menu's, but no song would play. I tried a hard reset, and the apple appeared. However, it just stays there until it eventually becomes a red cross, all the while emitting a 'stop-and-start' crackle, like screwing up paper. I can't now get back to any menu's at all.
Sounds grim.
Can anyone out there offer any suggestions?

Thanks Bilbo, for the response. Looks like a new hard drive then.
One question, in the hope of avoiding the new one going the same way as the old.....
I recently fitted a new iPod holder to the dashboard of the car. This is basically a small magnet.
An adhesive metal plate sticks to the back of the iPod, (or whayever else you want to mount) and it then just sits on the magnet. The hold is strong enough that it doesn't shake loose.
A great, no fuss idea, but could the magnet have screwed up the Hard Drive?

  • AHHHHHHH!!!!!!! frozen screen and reset loop of death.....

ok so my iphone froze the other day...i hit all kinds of buttons and nothing would work until i used the slee/home button reset...it worked but then a few mins later i pushed the sleep button to wake up the phone and the screen flashed many multicolored vertical lines (sort of like when your tv loses reception)and then proceeded to fully reset the phone bringing up the apple icon and finally to the home screen...when i use the phone from there everything works fine, or even if i hit the sleep button to turn it off and then i hit it again to turn it right back on im fine, however if i leave it "asleep" for about a minute or so and then try and wake it up...the whole process repeats with the horrible screen and reset...i've tried all the resets in the phone with and without erasing content, and i even tried the restore once but still it's jacked up....any thoughts? has anyone heard of this?

I managed to give my phone these symptoms, but as I'd just made a settings change, I managed to switch it back and the problem went away:
I set Mail to automatically check for messages, rather than only manually.
As soon as I exited the system preferences, the phone froze. It would then come back for a few seconds, then freeze again.
I couldn't switch the phone off, and when the unlock screen appeared, the "slide to unlock" text didn't "pulse" like it normally does.
The on-off button took me to the home screen (for some reason) and, by waiting after each "button" press for 10secs for it to take effect, i managed to switch back to manual email checking.
As soon as I did this, the problem disappeared.
I don't know if this relates in any way to your problem, but you never know...
    good luck.

  • Frozen screen during execution

    Hi there,
I developed a VI to acquire pressure data from 48 sensors. During execution, the front panel freezes and the acquisition just stops. No error message appears and i just can interact with other objects, like graphs and buttons. Remember that the VI keep running, but the acqusition stucks. I'm using LabView 6.1. I'd apreciate if you could help me.
    Thanks,

  • My iMac is frozen on a blue screen during an update software for snow leopard. What do I do? Turn off my imac?

My iMac is frozen on a blue screen during an update of software for snow leopard. What do I do?  Should I turn off the computer?

do a hard shutdown of the mac (holding down the power button until it shuts off) then do an SMC reset, the following article tells how to do this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
after doing this reset and restarting the mac, try again to install the update.

  • IPod Nano 5G (16 Gig) has frozen on the Reset Settings Screen

My iPod Nano 5G (16 Gig) has frozen on the Reset Settings Screen after I tried holding the middle button to re-set. I was doing this as a result of the backlight timer not responding. I'm really worried now, even if I plug into an official Apple external USB outlet or my PC nothing is happening - it's just stuck on that screen. Has been like this for about 4 hours now. And iTunes is saying it doesn't recognise the Nano and its not showing as an external drive on my PC.
Though this was bought for my from HMV at Xmas would I still be able to take the Nano to the Apple store as a last resort? Any help would be great, thanks.

Hi I tried this from: Zolved.com +Toggle the Hold switch to on, then back to off (none of the red is showing).+
+Press and hold down the Menu and Select buttons for 10 seconds (until you see the Apple logo) as shown in the picture.+ And it appears to have worked, so am guessing this is the standard way of re-setting the Nano? Thanks

  • TS3824 FROZEN WHITE SCREEN DURING INTERNET SEARCH ON IPOD

WHILE SEARCHING INTERNET SCREEN WENT WHITE AND IS FROZEN.

    - For the reset that T.Lange describes you have to hold longer.  Apple says:
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next try connecting to yur computer and try to restore via iTunes.
    - If screen is still white, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an hour try the above again .

  • HT4623 on upgrading iPhone 4 to ios 6 using itunes it returned an unknown error then froze completely.  It has the iTunes and USB connector on the screen.  Reset is not working, I get the same frozen screen.

On upgrading iPhone 4 to ios 6 using iTunes, it returned an unknown error then froze completely with the iTunes icon and USB connector on the screen.  Reset didn't work.  iTunes doesn't recognize the devise anymore.

if your computer is not recognizing it, try using a different USB port or different usb cable. if that doesnt work you will need to uninstall and reinstall itunes.

  • My iphone 3gs has a frozen screen; I have tried to reset the phone by holding the power button and the one at the bottom but still nothing! Help!

My phone still won't get off the frozen screen even when I try to force a reboot

Thank you Lawrence. that worked! I have another question for you as well. I just got this 6 Plus and it is already saying that I am nearing the end of my storage. My  iCloud is apparently 20gb and I have 6gb left. I'm attaching a screen shot. Any thoughts on how I can make available some more storage?
I Also wanted to get an enhanced quality Speech voice Alex, but it is saying I don't have enough Memory (I think it says memory because I can't read the message fully). Lastly, in your opinion does Grayscale really improve battery life above and beyond what can be achieved by closing out all apps etc. Thank you.

Let the battery fully darain. After charging for an least an hour try a reset and restore. Use Recovery mode if necessary.
If not successful, then time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • MacBook Pro Hard Disk Crashed after Frozen Screen

    Hi
Very unpleasant experience with my first MacBook.  My MacBook Pro Book 13'' (late 2010 model) screen froze on start up.  Realised that the battery was low and plugged the power adapter in, and let the frozen screen continue hoping for it to start in a while, only to realise that the entire laptop heated up significantly.  I switchd the laptop off and let it simply recharge.
No luck on restarting after laptop was fully charged despite several attempts and following all instructions on Apple website, including SMC reset.  I took the laptop down to the store and the Genius Bar team informed me that the hard disk had corrupted and they could not retrieve any data.
Wondering if this is a common problem, as I have never had a hard disk failure before and specially surprising as it is relatively new laptop (<1 year) old ? Seems like a technical fault with the laptop prima facie.  Some data was not backed up recently, and now I need to look for a recovery specialist, with costs to bear despite Apple Care.
Any suggestions on recovery specialists in London who do not charge a fortune ?
    Thank a Lot !

  • IMac 27" frozen screen

just can not identify in what situations, but when my Mac has a frozen screen, I have no other alternative but to push the off button. The most ironic thing is that, clearly the internet connection keeps. I know this because I'm usually listening to online radio. When it occurs, I can not change my dashboard and also can not switch to another application because I can not use the keyboard and the mouse click does not work.
I am currently using Mac OS X Yosemite, but the problem has persisted for several other versions of the system.
    I

I have exactly the same problem with a my 27" iMac of exactly the same vintage and configuration. It freezes this way anywhere between once a day and once a week.
I also see an additional variation of this crash, where when I wake up the machine from sleep, the backlight comes on, but no image is drawn. It glows gray. In the form of the crash that Helton reports, the cursor moves with the mouse, but nothing responds to clicks. I've also seen where streaming (and I believe locally stored iTunes) continue) to play. I am not sure whether the machine remains visible on the network.
I have never used any anti-virus on this machine. In a desperate attempt to isolate the problem I have done the following:
Fresh clean install of Mavericks onto a new, external Firewire 800 drive
After the install, I only re-installed the apps I use frequently: iTunes, Aperture, Chrome, Adobe Flash and Microsoft Remote Desktop, HP printer driver, TextWrangler. That's it.
Replaced 3rd-party memory I had installed with the original factory installed 2x 2GB DIMMs
Blown out the bottom vents and the circular vent in back with canned air
Unplugged the external DVI monitor I was using
Done the usual setting resets via the startup
Ran the built-in memory checker at startup
Ran checks on the harddrives for errors, permission problems, etc...
Wiped the internal drive clean, and did a fresh install on that
    The crashes still occur.
The system does not appear to be hotter than normal. I used to have a widget that monitors temps (but doesn't change fan speeds).
This system has the Seagate 1TB harddrive that was eligible for a recall, but I didn't do it. The drive has never reported any SMART errors.
Since you are still seeing crashes after updating to Yosemite, I'm not sure what to try next, myself. I've considered pulling it apart to make sure there is no dust in the fans. It doesn't seem to be overheating, but despite the sensors, there doesn't seem to be a way to record a regular temperature history to see what the temps were like at the moment of the freeze.
Of course, it's out of warranty. It's five years old, but it's plenty fast enough for me. The screen is still gorgeous. If it weren't for this, I'd use it for at least another two years. I was thinking of getting a MacMini to plug into it and use the iMac as a screen, but the new MacMinis are dual-core. It wouldn't be a nice leap in performance.
