Frozen screen saver

My screensaver is set for 3 minutes
My display sleep is set for 5 minutes
After two hours I come back to the computer and try to wake up the display. It is around 10:30 and all I can get on the screen is the screensaver clock showing 8:52 The display is no longer asleep, but the screen saver is frozen.
What can be done short of cycling power? This is not a good option since files may get corrupter.
I did cycle power and things look normal again, but I am afraid this may repeat again. It has already happened twice in the last three days.
Here is what the system log files say:
Jan 2 20:52:27 Porro ScreenSaverEngine[21991]: CGSResolveShmemReference : reference offset (33712) exceeds bounds (32768) on shmem obj 0x8ada

I had a similar problem with my screensaver, and ended up telling it to always use a very simple picture folder and only display on one monitor. Before I had it randomly select from about a dozen different screensavers and display on both monitors. Since making the change I haven't had a problem. I never figured out what was going wrong, and neither has anyone else that I have seen. Personally, I suspect a problem with older QuartzComposer savers and some recent updates from Apple, but don't know which update would be the cause (I ran a batch of them at the same time). Unlike you, I did not find anything in my log files indicating a problem with anything. The computer simply froze when it attempted to exit the screensaver, either by manual intervention (moving the mouse) or to go from the saver to screen sleep. If you have one particular saver you've been using, try changing it to something else and see if you still have a problem.

  • Frozen on Screen Saver - Mac Book Pro Retina, precursor to something bad?

    My Macbook Pro Retina, 10.8.2, went into Screen Saver mode, "Shifting Tiles", while I way away from my computer. Upon my return I was meet with a black screen and where the images for the "shifting tiles" would be were black boxes with an oily rainbow outline around each image box.
    The boxes weren't moving at all, not shifting like "Shifting Tiles" would.
    Computer wouldn't wake even when I left it alone for a couple minutes. Had to hard shutdown my computer by holding down the power key.
    I've turned off Screensavers all together, but am worried this might just be a precursor to something worse. Computers barely 4 months old.
    Any helpful advice or thoughts would be a apperciated.
    Thanks.

    The answer you accepted as a solution is absolutely false. Not only do you not need to purchase ML, but the App Store version will not install on your computer.
    There is no need for you to create a standalone installer. In the very unlikely event that you ever need to reinstall the OS, you can do it by booting into Recovery or Internet Recovery.
    OS X: About OS X Recovery
    If you insist on creating a standalone installer anyway, follow these instructions:
    Create a bootable Lion install drive for newer Macs
    The instructions are outdated, but should still work.

  • Xorg / catalyst / kernel upgrade - Frozen screen and input [SOLVED]

    I knew it, never upgrade xorg/graphic drivers when using ATI cards, just bless your god when it works and never touch it again. But I got tempted and I did a full system upgrade, and now... my xorg is broken.
    I'm using ATI proprietary drivers catalyst 8.12-1 with xorg 1.5.3-3. My card is an ATI x1950 pro.
    It used to work perfectly, but since the update, when i startx I just get a terminal (because of my .xinitrc) in fullscreen without my window manager getting launched, and my mouse in the middle of the screen; and nothing responds the mouse won't move, even ctrl+alt+backspace won't work. I have to ssh on my machine and 'killall X'.
    I tried starting off with a default config (using aticonfig --initial -f), but still the same problem.
    I have a dual screen setup.
    I disabled AIGLX and Composite, but no success.
    If I fail to repair this, since I made a backup of my pacman database, I could revert it right ?
    Please help us, us pwned ATI users !

    edit: weird thing (or not) but DPMS (or whatever it is, the thing that turns off my monitor after some time) seems to work, altough moving the mouse or pressing the keyboard doesn't wake up the screen. Has this something to do with my mouse and keyboard not being recognized by xorg ?
    edit2: omg yes it is ! I added:
    urxvtc -e 'screen'
    so when I startx an un-window-managered fullscreen terminal launches with a screen session, and if I ssh on it I can type in this terminal from another computer, and the screen actually displays what I'm typing, so that's definitely an input problem !
    Final Edit: Well all solved, concerning the "frozen" stuff, it was just that my keyboard and mouse weren't detected because of the new hotpulg thingy (check http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … otplugging for more info, or just add 'hal' to your rc.conf), then restored my original xorg.conf, rebooted and it all went back to normal (: ). Hope this helps.

    Hmm, I wonder what it would reveal if someone read the news? http://www.archlinux.org/news/424/
    Even your Xorg.0.log is telling you the problem.

  • Freezing, screen saver or what?

    Thanks in advance for your help.
    My computer is constantly freezing (Finder). I think it is the screen saver or the putting to sleep function, because it always happens when the computer is on and I am not working on it.
    What would happen is that the mouse would not respond at all and I have no choice but to click the power button. Then the computer gives the options of shutting down or restarting, but again, since the mouse doesn't respond, I have no option but to continue the power off operation.
    If I connect an USB mouse, then the mouse responds, but not the keyboard. Thus, cannot logout but to force a power off.
    I have used Disc Utilities, Disk warrior and Techtool to repair permissions and rebuild with no sucess.
    Don't know what to do.
    Thanks!

    Thanks.
    free space: I have 143GB available on HD (42Gb used) and 2Gb RAM. Don't think this is the problem, do you? could use the techtool tool for freeing memory...
    permissions, directory: I have repaired directory with latest techtool pro, and latest disk warrior. I have also repaired permissions with disc utility at least twice and maybe with disk warrior, not sure

    Initially, I thought that this was a Mail problem and in fact posted a post there at some point. Did some work with preferences, etc that did not resolve the issue either. However, from the time the problem started to now, the frequency of the problem has diminished. The most common applications opened (althought I can't pinpoint...) are Mail, Safari, iPhoto, system preferences, itunes, word, keynote, ical and address book. The rest are just barely used. Mail, ical and safari are by far the most commonly used.
    Ah!, the microsoft office application was installed not long ago and I did have few problems with it in terms of crashing (the application). It was a vocabulary issue that I resolved. But, the application was installed around the time this started. However, the application is not commonly used and I know by fact my computer has frozen many tiems without word being opened.
    Thanks again

  • Retina Macbook Pro doesn't wake up from screen saver

    Hi There -
    I've been having some issues with my computer coming back to life after the screen saver has been initiated. Once it freezes, it's frozen for good and requires a restart. This has been happening relatively frequently and I'm assuming it's got something to do with the new hardware, specifically the retina display itself?
    Anyway, I'd roll the dice and upgrade to Mountain Lion, but I've got some programs that have not been tested in that environment and I'd rather stick with Lion for the time being.
    Has anyone else had this issue?

    I am also having the same issue. There's another thread here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19004375#19004375
    Mine is frozen when I come back to my machine and wake it up... the lock screen appears but it's frozen - usually I can move the mouse around and either see the arrow or spinning beach ball. Sometimes I notice the time is frozen from several mintures prior from when I left the machine ... I have turned of the lock on screensaver option for now to see if that will keep it from freezing.

  • MBPro won't wake up from screen saver?

    Ok so here is the deal, on my mbPro mid 2010 laptop, I came back from lunch and the screen saver is working as per normal, but when I hit the space bar or move the mouse the is no response, however if I move the curser to the lower left hand corner which, for me is a hot corner set to activate mission control - then MC works. So then I click on one of my miniature windows thinking that it should then bring that window to full screen without the screen saver. This doesn't produce the expected result either, instead mission control animates itself back to a full screen, except the sreen saver is still active.
    Its an endless loop - any ideas would be very helpful - Thanks in advance

  • Aperture No Longer Working With Screen Saver?

    For years I've been using my Aperture library (specifically, the "Flagged Photos") with the Screen Saver in OS X.  Since I upgraded to Lion last night, I have discovered that my Aperture library no longer shows up as an option in Screen Saver -- only iPhoto does.
    As I am remiss to ditch years of work and return to iPhoto -- I was hoping someone might have discovered a solution for this problem (perhaps something to do with the iLife browser in Lion?).
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Then, I checked the new sharing preferences and closed out Aperture.  I opened up the System Preferences for Screen Saver, and after waiting about 1-2 minutes, Aperture popped up in there as an option.
    Can you please explain what you mean about "checked the new sharing preferences?" I see no way of setting any "sharing" preferences in Preferences or anywhere else in Aperture. Do you mean you just looked at the sharing preferences?
    Since I've upgraded to the latest version, when I go to the System Preferences, Aperture is very slow in showing up on the ScreenSaver settings under System Preferences and the virtual Library folders no longer show up (they show up under the Desktop window though). However, after closing Aperture, the screensaver would display "looking for pictures" and would not display the photos.
    The latest upgrade definitely broke something, although it greatly improved Aperture's response time, as it was getting pretty sluggish before the upgrade.

  • Screen saver overrides iTunes cover flow in Lion

    On my new iMac (OSX 10.7.1, iTunes 10.4.1), when in full screen cover flow mode, the screen saver overrides this, which is annoying as I like to leave it playing with the artwork displayed. This did not happen on my old (Leopard) Mac. I can't find any preference setting that seems to fix this. I dont really want to turn off the screen saver - I didn't have to before, why now?

    Have you tried creating a hot corner (System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Screen Saver - Hot Corners) to disable the screen saver by parking mouse pointer in the "hot corner."
    I'm assuming Lion still has this function.

  • Screen saver from folder?

    In OS 10.8.5 is it possible to have the screen saver show pictures from a folder on the desktop?
    I can't see that option.
    You can do this with the desktop picture but thats not what I want.

    When I go to the Screensaver tab in the "Desktop & Screensaver" pane of System Preferences, I can select a theme, i.e. Classic, and then in the right half of the window, there's a drop-down menu for "source."
    Click "Choose Folder" and then select the folder you want.

  • How do I get rid of the floating black prompt over my "screen saver" about airplay

    I have 5 apple tvs and when the screen saver comes on after a minute or 2 an annoying prompt comes up covering part of the pictures on the screen saver prompting me on the use of airplay.  I want it "THE PROMPT" to go away and not come back any other day!   I own apple2s and apple3s  This interfers with the pictures on the screen saver

    Thank you so much for posting this question! That thing has been driving me nuts for months!
    Problem resolved!

  • How do I type my own screen saver?

    Seems to me there used to be a way to just type in a phrase in screen saver settings and have it bounce around the screen as a screen saver. Is there still a way to do this? Or does it require a third party app.?
    Thank you

    there is definitely nothing built in like this. i don't remember there being a screensaver like that either. there might of course be a 3rd party screensaver that does this.

  • How do I use a font that a user of my screen saver might not have?

    I am trying to do a little experiment with fonts. I downloaded a font that was not previously installed on my computer, and am trying to make a "Hello, World!" screen saver with that font(which I installed).
    The problem is that I can not even use that font. When I attempt to make a "Hello, World!" screen saver with that font, it uses the default font. Here's the code:
    #import "saverView.h"
    @implementation saverView
    - (id)initWithFrame:(NSRect)frame isPreview:(BOOL)isPreview
    self = [super initWithFrame:frame isPreview:isPreview];
    if (self) {
    [self setAnimationTimeInterval:1/30.0];
    //either my mistake is here:
    hylianFont = [NSFont fontWithName:@"Ancient Hylian - English" size:20];
    attrs = [NSMutableDictionary dictionaryWithCapacity:2];
    //NSForegroundColorAttributeName -- [Color green]
    [attrs setValue:[NSColor greenColor] forKey: NSForegroundColorAttributeName];
    // or it is here:
    [attrs setValue:hylianFont forKey: NSFontAttributeName];
    displayer = [[NSAttributedString alloc] initWithString:@"Hello, World!" attributes:attrs];
    return self;
    //... more stuff I do not use...
    //simply draws "Hello, World!" in green at the top right of the screen.
    //meant to draw it in the different font, but draws it in the standard font.
    - (void)animateOneFrame
    [displayer drawInRect:[self bounds]];
    return;
    @end
    Where did I mistype?

    I think I solved the problem. I just put the font and the screen saver in a pkg file, and make the pkg file install the font. Or I guess I could keep the font in my screen saver and test it that way. Either way, I found the answer.

  • Having a problem with ilife 08 and leopard screen saver

    Hi,
    Not sure if this is an osx leopard issue or a ilife 08 issue but before I did the upgrade I was able to use my entire iphoto library as random photos in the screensaver. Not it only let's me choose specific events or last import. it does not let me select the entire iphoto library?
    Any ideas on this?

    In System Preferences/Screen Saver, you need to go down the list past all the Events and you will see a listing titled "Photos" just above the item titled "Last 12 Months". Select it and you will see the entire iPhoto Library there.

  • IMac to Apple TV 2nd gen music distortion with screen saver on.

    I have an ATV2, mid 2010 iMac dual core i3, Airport Extreme 3rd generation router.
    After Wednesday's update to Apple TV to implement the new user interface, I get distorted playback when initiating music playback from iTunes on the iMac as soon as the screen saver starts.  It sounds like the old vinyl records when the needle skips. It isn't, oddly enough, timed with the screen changes. It occurs at ever increasing frequency, from 24 to 19 to 16 seconds.
    If however, you access the iMac through the Apple TV interface, the screen saver start up does not create any interference. It doesn't matter whether the music is started using the Apple remote control or the iPhone 4S interface. Both work fine.
    So it's a one way situation. When you start playing music from iTunes on the iMac, interference and distortion start with the screen saver, but if you start playing music from the Apple TV, there is no distortion or interference from the screen saver.
    Any one else have this problem and a solution?

    Based on an Apple Care suggestion, the solution to this problem is to reset the Apple TV completely.  This is under Settings- General- Reset-Restore.
    Restore will erase previous versions of the Apple TV software and will download and install a current clean version.  You do have to re-enter all your configuration settings, such as wireless network password and your iTunes Account.
    A little bit time consuming but it eliminated the problem.
