Frozen SQL Developer Console on startup

Hello
Recently installed the latest version of SQLDeveloper 3.1EA on WindowsXP. Working fine initially for a few days but now on startup the console freezes and I am unable to click on any of the menu options even to close the tips of the day window. To kill the process, I have to end the SQL Developer from Task Manager
Reverted back to my previous SQLDeveloper 3.0 version, but having the same problem. The mouse simply has no effect when clicking on Tabs, Menu items etc.
My version of Java from the command line prompt is 1.6.0_10
Can any body help with this issue??

Well then, perhaps it's not SQL Developer at all.
Wild guess: do you have lots of other things running simultaneously? Check your Windows Task Manager's Performance tab and see if the Commit Charge exceeds Physical Memory. It could be that your system might be doing excessive paging. Do you see how much memory the top processes are using in the Process tab? (may need to select Mem Usage and/or VM Size columns using View|Select Columns).
Good luck and remember to post your questions with 3.1EA1 in the title if the question pertains specifically to this new early adopter release.

P.S.: And ctrl-break should work fine if you launch sqldeveloper.exe from the ...\sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper\bin directory.

SQL Developer startup is very slow

I'm finding that the first time I start SQL Developer it takes between 3 mins 30 and 4 mins to start up. This seems far too long. It's installed on a Windows 7 PC in it's own folder in Program Files. What's causing it to be so slow? - virus scanning, JVM startup? Also why are there 3 executables - sqldeveloper.exe in teh root and sqldeveloper and sqldeveoperW in teh bin folder?

Your "Automatically Check for Updates" option may be turned on. You can look at this setting by going to Tools->Preferences->Extensions. When I unchecked the "Automatically Check for Updates" checkbox my startup times drastically decreased. Hope that helps.

SQL Developer 1.2 for Win hangs on startup

Hi.
I have a problem with starting SQL Developer (1.2, JRE included) on certain Windows XP machines - after closing the start-up extensions preferences dialogue window the interface hangs. A shadow of the dialogue window is still visible and the interface is frozen, with 100% CPU activity and no options available whatsoever. I tried waiting, but after 15 minutes there is no change. Restarting the system doesn't help, and on repeated tries the result is always the same.
I tried searching around this forum but couldn't find the solution. Can someone please point me in the right direction or perhaps tell me the possible cause?

I just had the same problem. Only after changing to a Vista administrator user account I could successfully start sql developer.

Sql-developer EA3 Crashed during startup

Hi,I startup sql-developer on my Ubuntu 13.04,and it crashed with errors:
       "A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:SIGSEGV (0xb) at ...
        JRE version: Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (7.0_45-b18) (build 1.7.0_45-b18)
        Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (24.45-b08 mixed mode linux-amd64 compressed oops)".
I already tried "ulimit -c unlimited" before starting to enable write core dump.
But if i run sql-developer as root user,then it startup normally,so I suspect it's insufficient privilege when I startup with normal user first time.I have changed the owner of sqldeveloper & Java to myself but it didn't work(which was owned by root previously).
I don't know how to analyze the core dump nor the error log file created during crash,but I do not want to startup it as root user.So,anybody who can give a solution would be appreciated.

There are some related threads where running SQLDev as root 'fixes' the issue on Ubuntu...it looks like the final solution came down to this
unset GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID
Try that, or search the forums for the 2-3 other threads around this topic.

Error Sql-developer EA3 hangs during startup

Sql-developer 4 EA3 simply hangs while starting up in "startup pop-window" during task "Restoring Windows".
I've even restartet my windows 7, the problem still exists.
Have to use an earlier version :-(

Trace/tune SQL Developer startup?

I am trying to tune the startup time of SQL Developer.
The best hint I found so far is disabling all extensions not needed. (in my case all the migration assistants, and the check for 'looking for updates automatically' reduced the startup time from approx. 60 sec down to 30 sec).
Still I'd like to know if (and how) I can squeeze more time out of it. To do so, I'd like to know where I spend most of the time.
Can someone hint me how I can trace the startup procedure, so I can find the most time consuming actions during startup?

SQL Developer is just a client tool. It doesn't come with a database. It expects that you already have a database which it can connect to.
And putting your email address in a posting on a forum is A Very Bad Idea (tm). No on on the forum is going to respond to it, but a million address harvesters will sell it to spam sources. Expect to be flooded with email offers for the following
1) products to enhance the size of certain body parts
2) Nigerians who desperately need to move large sums of money and are willing to pay a total strangers for assistance.

SQL Developer 1.51.5440 high CPU + frozen screen

Hi,
Using SQL Developer 1.51.5440 on WinXP. The laptop has 2 GB and decent CPU, the OS is well maintained and in good working order.
From times to times, the SQL Developer window becomes unresponsive (with a gray background). Either it freezes in this state or takes 2 to 5 minutes to becomes responsive again.
I started using SQL Developer last week (I am new to Oracle), I have already had 3 times where SQL Developer consumes a lot of CPU, make the CPU fan spins, and stay in this state permanently. I had to kill the process to make it stop. Not sure how to reproduce this issue but I suspect this could be clicking on a connection where the Oracle server is not accessible.
Is it a confirmed issue or is it specific to my laptop?

There are some reported problems where SLQDeveloper uses a lot of CPU. I don't know if the development team have got to the bottom of them, though.
If you can confirm the steps to reproduce, it would help the team.
Anti-virus software can cause general slowness in Java apps, but if Task Manager is showing SQLDeveloper using CPU rather than the virus scanner it probably isn't that.

SQL Developer 4 Hangs on Startup

SQL Developer starts with the splash screen, then opens a larger window (leaving both open) and then hangs there.

I've completely deleted my %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\{sqldeveloper|SQL Developer} directories.
I'm running from my D:\ drive.
I've modified the %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\sqldeveloper\product.conf and pointed it at various JDKs with various results - as expected Java 6 flat doesn't work. Older Java 7 doesn't open the blank screen but hangs.

1.7.0_13-b20 is old, and is that a beta? We're testing and supporting with version 1.7u45 as a minimum.
You don't need to update your JDK - just download the Windows copy of SQLDev 4 that includes the JDK and you should be good to go.
The other thing you could try is to run it from your C:\ drive in case there's some weird write permissions issue going on.

Error on SQL Developer startup

I'm suddenly receiving the following popup when I try to run SQL Developer:
Unable to create an instance of the Java Virtual Machine Located at path:
c:\sun\AppServer\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll
The only change I've made recently is installing .net and sql server 2003.
Any ideas???

This might not be exactly related to this thread, but when I try to start JDeveloper 10g, I see the following message:
Unable to create an instance of the Java Virtual Machine Located at path:

This started about a month ago.
The solution for me is to "Shutdown ZoneAlarm Security Suite".
It is probably possible to simply change some Program Control parameters in ZoneAlarm, but I have not yet figured out these details. Has anyone else?

Apparently, you've got the OrindaBuild extension installed. Do you use it?
If you don't know what I'm talking about, this is a 3rd party trial software from Orinda Software you probably bumped into through the update center.
Better disable (uncheck) it in Preferences - Extensions.

EA1 - Exception when SQL Developer opens SQL files on startup

If I close SQL Developer with a file open, that file is automatically reopened when restarting SQL Developer. This works fine, but for each .sql file which does open, I get the following exception listed in the Logging Page's Log tab:
SEVERE 147 0 oracle.ide.IdeCore Exception firing mainWindowOpened to oracle.dbtools.sqlworksheet.sqlview.SqlEditorController$2@xxxxxxx
This doesn't happen for PL/SQL files (ie .pks, .pkb, etc) - just for .sql files.

SQL Developer "visits" each defined connection on startup

I am using SQL Developer 2.1.1.64. When I start it, it "visits" each defined connection. I'm using the term "visits" rather than "connects" because it doesn't auto-expand the entries in the Connections list, and it doesn't open up any SQL Worksheets. But it is DEFINITELY doing something which causes it to attempt to access each of the database servers (perhaps only to determine if a connection is possible).
Is there any way to turn this off?
The reason I ask: I have a number of connections pre-defined, for accessing customers' systems through a corporate VPN. Each time I access a customer system, the VPN prompts me to login and indicate a reason for access. I don't want to have to loop through all of those prompts every time I start SQL Developer.
Some of my colleagues are using older versions (1.2, 1.5), and they don't have this issue.

Unable to test as i have no vpn connection.
Would be interesting if you can install wireshark and check it out.

SQL Developer startup

Hi,
i have monitored that the SQL Developer slows down if you have a lot of connections in your connection tree
(i have 100-200 connections in my tree); if i start an clean installation without any connection it starts within 30sek
But with my connection tree it takes ~2-5min to start; the progress bar reaches 100%, then it takes 2-3 min until i have the tool ready
- any ideas ?

So if switching between a local / network tnsnames file does not change start-up time much, and the same for paring down the connections.xml file, it seems we have pursued a false lead. Let's return to your comment at the beginning of this thread:

Perhaps something detrimental to performance gets copied from a prior installation when you import preferences into the 3.0 configuration. At times the configuration data can become corrupt. It especially worries me that you say *"config is stored also in the network (56MB)"*.
Do you mean network equivalent to C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\SQL Developer\system3.0.04.34+ has a size of 56M?
Perhaps you could try the following: export all your connections; exit SQL Dev; erase the system3.0.04.34 folder; restart SQL Dev but do not import preferences from a prior installation; import your connections. Typically I find the size on disk of such configuration folders ranges from 0.5 to 2.0M.
As for the log file with "Error while registering Oracle JDBC Diagnosability MBean", I'm not sure. Perhaps it is a side-effect of some configuration corruption rather than the cause of the poor start-up performance.

I am OK to ignore the error. But better option will be SQL Developer take care of this situation.
My intention is to keep SQL Developer on a readonly share folder and send the path to end users.
Ideally I wish I could use UNC path so that I dont have to worry about the drive mapping.
