Frozen systemr won't move, cannot shut down, what can I do?

Cursor won't move, system not responsive to keyboard commands, cannot shut down the system.

I have been getting the gray screen and lock-up on my Air. I bought the machine in November. I took it in and got it replaced for a new one - now the new one is doing the same thing. The whole situation is obviously a bit annoying. Sure, I could go and have this one replaced as well, but to what end? Just to wind up having another Air that does the same thing. Eventually my warranty will expire and I will be stuck with a machine that freezes up on us. Not to mention the glitchy way it wakes up from sleeps then goes black for a few seconds before RE-waking up occasionally.

Yes you'll have to have the phone repaired/replaced at an Apple store or authorized Apple service provider.

my hp compaq presario62  has been over heating and mostly  shut down  what can i do?

You can try a usb cooling pad but I am not a big fan of them....if your laptop needs one there is a problem that needs to be fixed. The likely issue is a clogged fan and cooling system which requires disassembly and cleaning out around the fan and heatsink, removing the heatsink and appplying new thermal compound. You can also perhaps help by using compressed air blown into the heat vents.

Mail wont open or quit so I cannot shut down my computer

Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, select that application, and press the Force Quit button. If that doesn't work, save and close everything you can and use the Activity Monitor in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to force quit the loginwindow process.

  • I downloaded the new Firefox but it constantly freezes, doing absolutely nothing, and I can't even close it from my Mac dock bar, I have to turn off my laptop using the power button as Firefox won't let me shut down. What can I do?

    Hi
I recently downloaded the new Firefox (Firefox 4, I think - you can tell I'm very tech savvy!) and it constantly freezes, I can't do anything with it at all - I can't even close it from the icon in my Mac dock bar.
I have tried restarting my computer - though I have to turn it off by using the power button as as Firefox is open and totally unresponsive it won't let me shut down. About a minute after re-starting Firefox, restoring my tabs or starting afresh, it freezes again.
This is obviously very annoying and I'm not sure what I can do about it. Firefox is my preferred browser, and I'd really like to be able to use it again!

This is not a reply. I just want to elaborate on this problem.
My computer freezes occasionally when it is used after being sleep for a while. The spinning ball appears and everything is totally disabled. Nothing on the keyboard works.
The mouse moves, but does not work.
The only solution is to turn the power off and on (losing all data in open applications.)
I kept the System monitor running on the side to find out which program was running when the computer froze. The Monitor as well as all other applications froze, but the data showed:
    Firefox 18.4%
    Activity Monitor 0.9%
    Firefox Plugin 0.2%
This is all the information I have. By the way, I am using iMac with OS 10.6.

  • Cannot shut down the computer !

I cannot shut down my computer after I click Apple menu>shut down>>shut down again. Then got no response for a while, prompt out "Logout has timed out because the application Finder failed to quit. To try again, quit Finder and choose Log Out from Apple menu." But I have already close Finder by clicking the RED button on top left corner. From the Finder pull down menu, I cannot find the "Quit" command. When I click Apple Menu again and click Force Quit, it prompt out a small window and ask to Re-launch Finder, or Cancel. If I click cancel, nothing happen, if I click re-launch, it flash and keep asking Re-launch. What's happened to my computer? Anyone can help ?

This is a problem that I've been having with the two IMacs our office uses. It doesn't happen every time, which makes it even more difficult to troubleshoot.
What happens is the computer goes into shutdown(or logging out) mode, hangs for awhile, then the desktop just comes back on. Often there will be an error message saying something like "Logout timed out due to failure of Safari to quit." And sometimes it will list a different application. But, in all instances, there ARE no applications open. When I launch the Activity Monitor, it confirms that there are no hidden apps running anywhere. It just won't shut down or log out. At that point, you have to force power down with the power button, which is not a healthy way to shut down on a regular basis.
I've run disk utility and permissions repair off the system disk. I've zapped the PRAM. My latest attempt has been to reset the SMC, so I will have to monitor it to see if it did the trick.
I'm sure that if I called Applecare at this point that they would tell me to archive and install. But that is a bit drastic a step and isn't really troubleshooting. Not when it will take considerable time to reconfigure these machines for uncertain results. Since A.) the IMacs were right out of the box when this problem began and B.) the MacPros and MacBooks that run the same OS and the same software DO NOT experience a similar problem, I suspect it wouldn't resolve the issue.
I just want to exhaust all other possibilities before taking the archive and install step, because you always end up losing prefs from third party software, etc...
Has anyone else experienced this problem before???

  • Problem deleting photos and cannot shut down or log out

I have managed to put a whole lot of photos on my desk top which I want to transfer to the trash can (over 5000). When I moved them to trash an error message "Item ....jpg is used by Mac OSX and cannot be opened" and you have to press OK. This is happening for every photo. It won't let me shut down or log out. I don't want to have to press OK 5000 times. Can anyone help?

Dr Bettina, I had similar problems with Mavericks. I installed it on a Mini and a 13" MacBook Pro. I can't speak to your disdplay issues, but I can confirm the inability to logout, shut down, or restarft without a forced, power button shut down. I can also report frequent System Prefs freezes and finder issues, like folder contents taking half a minuite or more to render, or not appearing at all. And while a few Adobe CC apps actually ran faster, InDesign ran like molasses uphill in Decemner.
I tried uninstalling or disabling numerous 3rd party apps and pref panes. I unplugged everything but the keyboard, ran DiskWarrier, repaired permissions, did fsck -f, trashed various preference files, reinstalled the OS... You name it, and I tried it — short of a potion using eye of newt.
After two days of totally hosed productivity, I restored OS 10.8.5 on the Mini so I could actually get some work done. However, I've decided to leave Mavericks on the MBP as a sort of crash dummy, and will install and thoroughly test all updates until stability has been achieved. Then — and only then — will I upgrade the Mini to Mavericks, even if it means waiting 'til a .2 or even .3 update.
    Good luck to you...

  • Cannot shut down my new Satellite notebook

My new Satellite C series won't wake up. It's working but +screen is blank.+
Worse I can't reboot because I +cannot shut down the machine+. User Man says hold on/off switch down for a period. But this does not turn off machine.
    User Manual otherwise useless.
    Help.

The same thing has happened to me twice since I bought my Satellite L series notebook a few months ago.
*The answer is to unplug the notebook if it is connected to an outlet, then remove the battery, wait for a few minutes, reinsert the battery, wait a few minutes, then restart the computer.*
This has worked for me twice, but I wonder whether the fact that the screen turns black for no apparent reason while I am working at the computer means that something in the hardware is defective.

  • MSI Z87I Won't Reboot or Shut DOwn

My new system won't shut down or reboot from the OS (Ubuntu 14.04) or from the BIOS settings, i.e. Settings -> Save & Exit -> Save Changes and Reboot will not reboot the system. All my peripherals will turn off, but the fans stay on and the only way to power off the system is to long-hold the power switch on the front of the case or turn off the power at the PSU.
There is ONE case in which the system will reboot. If I go to Settings -> Save & Exit, choose "Restore Defaults" and then select "Save Changes and Reboot," the system will reboot one time, but it won't reboot or shut down after this.
I'm already on my second MoBo since I thought it was a MoBo issue.
    Specs:
    SSD: Patriot Pyro 60GB
    Memory: 2x PNY 4GBH2X02E99927-16-H
    CPU: Intel Core i3-4150 LGA1150
    PSU: Thermaltake TR2 500W
I've tried reseating the MoBo as well as testing it outside of the case with no luck.

    Ah, thanks!  Got it.
It looks to me like that is a different link to the same program, as when I downloaded it I got 'MSIHQ Tool 1.25g Installer(1).rar' as the filename, since I had just downloaded 'MSIHQ Tool 1.25g Installer.rar' from the link I posted (or perhaps from a page pointed to by that page, I've already forgotten where I got it...)
I notice that the '180' file has a batch file that runs 'fpt'.  Am I supposed to run that batch file, or run 'efiflash bios.bin'?  (Or both if this is the first time I've flashed the motherboard)

em nope, its the same program. (1) is auto renamed because the same name was already existing in your download folder

when this menu appear select option 2:
    1 Run Memtest
    2 Proceed with BIOS Update
3 Flash back to prevision bios
then press any key after read some safety instructions
then when asked if you want to Run Memtestx86, answer with "N"
then flash will start and will be asked for reboot when its done
you no need to type or run anything manually, its tottaly automated

  • G5 won't restart or shut down or change startup disc...

(after several updates) my computer won't restart or shut down except manually... which prevents me from changing the startup disc (where all my important stuff is). Option key during startup doesn't give me the startup disc option either.
    I'm stuck!
I verified and repaired permissions on both volumes, but can't switch back to the hard drive/OS I need.
If anyone can suggest some helpful info I'd really appreciate the help.

    Hi-
Are you using an Apple keyboard? If not, please do so while troubleshooting.
Try resetting the PRAM. Hold CommandOption+PR while starting up. Hold the keys until you hear the second startup chime, then release. The machine should then boot normally.
If this fails to return function, a PMU/SMU reset may be required.
There is a possibility of damaged files within the OS. Boot to the OS install disc, open Disk Utility and run Repair Disk on the Startup volume.
