Frustrated-creating slideshow in iMovie6

I'm trying to make a slideshow with bits of videos here and there. As I place my personal photos from iPhoto to iMovie, I notice that about 20% of the photos that are rendered into iMovie have several frames of what appears to be a screen shot of the whole screen in a messy hard to see kind of a way.
My Mac is up to date and everything on my Mac is legit and original. A help would be appreciated since this is for my son's 1-year Birthday party. My wife will kill me if this project is not done by Friday.
Thank you very much in advance.

I recall reports of that problem in the early days of iMovie HD 6, but thought it had gone away with iMovie updates. Are you running iMovie 6.0.3, the latest version?
If your version is current, then check for third-party iMovie plug-ins and QuickTime add-ons that might be messing up iMovie. More about those here:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1852869#1852869
That topic suggests creating a new user to see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't go away, if I were you I'd do some hardware testing. If your Mac has third-party RAM, it might have a flawed chip, for example.
The Mac OS X installer disk that came with your Mac may have the Apple Hardware Test software you can run. Starting up your Mac with that disk is required. Sorry, I don't recall exactly how to invoke the test.
This might help:

I need your help with a decision to use iPhoto.  I have been a PC user since the mid 1980’s and more recently have used ACDSee to manage my photo images and Photoshop to edit them.  I have used ProShow Gold to create slideshows.  I am comfortable with my own folder and file naming conventions. I currently have over 23,000 images of which around 60% are scans going back 75 years.  Since I keep a copy of the originals, the storage requirements for over 46,000 images is huge.  180GB plus.
I now have a Macbook Pro and will add an iMac when the new models arrive.  For my photos, I want to stay with Photoshop which also gives me the Bridge.  The only obvious reason to use iPhoto is to take advantage of Faces and the link to iMovie to make slideshows.  What am I missing and is using iPhoto worth the effort?
If I choose to use iPhoto, I am not certain whether I need to load the originals and the edited versions. I suspect that just the latter is sufficient.  If I set PhotoShop as my external editor, I presume that iPhoto will keep track of all changes moving forward.  However, over 23,000 images in iPhoto makes me twitchy and they are appear hidden within iPhoto.  In the past, I have experienced syncing problems with, and database errors in, large databases.  If I break up the images into a number of projects, I loose the value of Faces reaching back over time.
Some guidance and insight would be appreciated.  I have a number of Faces questions which I will save for later.

Bridge and Photoshop is a common file-based management system. (Not sure why you'd have used ACDSEE as well as Bridge.) In any event, it's on the way out. You won't be using it in 5 years time.
Up to this the lack of processing power on your computer left no choice but to organise this way. But file based organisation is as sensible as organising a Shoe Warehouse based on the colour of the boxes. It's also ultimately data-destructive.
Modern systems are Database driven. Files are managed, Images imported, virtual versions, lossless processing and unlimited editing are the way forward.
For a Photographer Photoshop is overkill. It's an enormously powerful app, a staple of the Graphic Designers' trade. A Photographer uses maybe 15% to 20% of its capability.
Apps like iPhoto, Lightroom, Aperture are the way forward - for photographers. There's the 20% of Photoshop that shooters actually use, coupled with management and lossless processing. Pop over to the Aperture or Lightroom forums (on the Adobe site) and one comment shows up over and over again... "Since I started using Aperture/ Lightroom I hardly ever use Photoshop any more..." and if there is a job that these apps can do, then the (much) cheaper Elements will do it.
The change is not easy though, especially if you have a long-standing and well thought out filing system of your own. The first thing I would strongly advise is that you experiment before making any decisions. So I would create a Library, import 300 or 400 shots and play. You might as well do this in iPhoto to begin with - though if you’re a serious hobbyist or a Pro then you'll find yourself looking further afield pretty soon. iPhoto is good for the family snapper, taking shots at birthdays and sharing them with friends and family.
Next: If you're going to successfully use these apps you need to make a leap: Your files are not your Photos.
The illustration I use is as follows: In my iTunes Library I have a file called 'Let_it_Be_The_Beatles.mp3'. So what is that, exactly? It's not the song. The Beatles never wrote an mp3. They wrote a tune and lyrics. They recorded it and a copy of that recording is stored in the mp3 file. So the file is just a container for the recording. That container is designed in a specific way attuned to the characteristics and requirements of the data. Hence, mp3.
Similarly, that Jpeg is not your photo, it's a container designed to hold that kind of data. iPhoto is all about the data and not about the container. So, regardless of where you choose to store the file, iPhoto will manage the photo, edit the photo, add metadata to the Photo but never touch the file. If you choose to export - unless you specifically choose to export the original - iPhoto will export the Photo into a new container - a new file containing the photo.
When you process an image in iPhoto the file is never touched, instead your decisions are recorded in the database. When you view the image then the Master is presented with these decisions applied to it. That's why it's lossless. You can also have multiple versions and waste no disk space because they are all just listings in the database.
These apps replace the Finder (File Browser) for managing your Photos. They become the Go-To app for anything to do with your photos. They replace Bridge too as they become a front-end for Photoshop.
So, want to use a photo for something - Export it. Choose the format, size and quality you want and there it is. If you're emailing, uploading to websites then these apps have a "good enough for most things" version called the Preview - this will be missing some metadata.
So it's a big change from a file-based to Photo-based management, from editing files to processing Photos and it's worth thinking it through before you decide.

  • Cannot create slideshow in Premiere Elements 8

I just installed and am trying to use Premiere Elements 8. I have been racking my brain for the last two hours trying to figure out how to create a slide show.  I do not have a create button anywhere.  I jumped from Elements 1.0 to 8.  I am ready to return 8 and go back to 1 if I cannot figure this out.
Where do I find the slideshow dialog box?
    Can someone please help?????
    Thanks.

Oh come on, Eric! You're not really going to return the program just because you couldn't figure out how to use it, are you?
I"m just teasing you. The program can be a bit intimidating at first. That's why I spend most of my day showing people how to use it.
Actually, there are at least four ways to build a slideshow in Premiere Elements. I show you how to do them all in my book, "The Muvipix.com Guide to Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements 8," if you're interested. It's available on Amazon.com and from the Muvipix store.
I don know specifically what kind of slideshow you're trying to create, so I can't give you specific instructions.
But first, before you bring any photos into Premiere Elements, be sure to resize them to 1000x750 pixels, per the FAQs to the right of this forum.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/431851?tstart=0
Then use Get Media/From Files and Folders to get the photos into your Project panel (also under the Organize tab.)
Once you've got all of your photos gathered in your Project media panel, select them all and right-click -- and select Create Slideshow.
As I say, there are a number of other ways to do it, but this is the easiest. There is also an option for creating a slideshow in Themes and there's a slideshow creator built into the Organizer.
But that should get you started.
Meantime, why not check out my free Basic Training with Premiere Elements tutorials on the Muvipix site?

  • PSE 11 encounters an unexpected problem and closes every time I click create slideshow

I just downloaded PSE 11 and I am experiencing the same problem I had with PSE 9. Every Time I try to open create slideshow the program "encounters an unexpected problem and must close".
The only other "create" I have tried is photocollage and it opened without problem. Any chance this could be a conflict with my Kaspersky security software or some other program? My first version
was 4.0 and the create slideshow worked fine when first installed, then after I installed a workaround from the forum after encountering a problem. But I could never get create slideshow to open in
PSE9 and now again in 11.

Please try the suggestions given on thread http://forums.adobe.com/message/4193698
Lets us know if that doesn't resolve your issue.
    Thanks

    Post the Crash Log.

  • IPhoto 09 will no longer create slideshows.

Most previously created slideshows seem to play fine.  However, iPhoto 09 won't create new slideshows.  Running OS X 10.6.8 on an iMac. ???  Any help will be appreciated.

I'm having the save problem. Using iPhoto '09 (8.1.2) on iMac 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo ... OS X 10.9.5.
I select an album, press the "+" at the bottom of the Source box, enter a name for the new slideshow and wait. Then nothing seems to happen. No addition to the Source listing. Number of pictures doesn't seem to make any difference.
    Appreciate any help/ suggestions.

  • Can't find "Create Slideshow" dialog box.

I have Premiere Elements 7, and am trying to create a slideshow.  The Help page refers to a "Create Slideshow" dialog box, but I don't see that anywhere.  I've looked through every menu, every icon, and tried right clicking on the photos that were dragged down to the timeline, but no slideshow option.
I've done slideshows manually using PE7 before, but it's a big pain having to manually reset the duration of each slide, rather than changing the default somehow.
    Thanks!
    Bennett

There are actually four different ways to build slideshows in Premiere Elements, and I show you how to do each in my books.
But I think you're referring to the slideshow creator on the Project panel. To use it, select several stills or clips in the Project panel (by selecting as you hold down the Ctrl or Shift key) and right-click. This will open the panel I think you're looking for.

  • Unable to watch or create slideshows.

When I open a previously created slideshow in iPhoto, I can see the photos across the top in a strip, but cannot see them underneath.  Also, the slideshow is blank, but plays the music.  Any help would be appreciated.   I think I have stumped the Apple Agents.

I can see the pics fine.  I have 3 previously created slideshows that I have watched a million times.  Now, all I see is the pics in a strip across the top and a white/blank screen where the photo should be.  If I try to create a new slideshow, I cannot see any pics in the strip across the top and the screen where the photo should be is black.  I have uninstalled iPhoto and reinstalled, and reinstalled Lion.

    What can I do?

  • Audio problem when creating slideshows

When creating slideshows in Adobe Photoshop Elements 9.0 I do not get any audio/music in the .pdf file.
I can get audio in preview and if I create a .wmv file but not in the .pdf file.
    Why?
I seen some discussions on the forum but no real answer.
I have tried to add the document as a trusted document in the preferences.
I have tried with Adobe reader 7.0, 9 and X. Nothing works.
Note: My music is longer than the slideshow since I would like music during the whole slideshow. It is one musicfile.
I run on a PC, Windows XP, servicepack 3.
Is this a bug in Adobe Photoshop Elements??
    Some error by me?
    Or is there  a workaround?
    /Tor

    OK!
    Thank you!
Seemed so strange since the Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 was able to do this. Sad that this function disappearred. Is there another way to get music in the .pdf file?
The .wmv file seem to distroy the picture resolution quite a lot. I get the impression that if I set the .pdf and .wmv output to same resolution the .wmv file gives pictures that seem to be done with a lower resolution (that the pictures get damaged in the transformation) . .....and as an extra disadvantage the file gets big.
Do you have any suggestion for what you think is the best option for me to do a slideshow?
    Best regards
    /Tor

  • Anybody create slideshows for businesses? ...need advice

    Hi Kids,
well, ...my goal is to create slideshows for businesses here in town. But I am not sure what businesses would benefit from them.
I have done quite a few slideshows for family and friends, and am trying to think of ways to earn some extra money to put my daughter thru school.
I am employed full time as an Art Director for an advertising agency, so I would like to use my experience as a graphic designer to create professional packaging/graphics, etc. for the client as well.
Anybody care to share what type of business to approach, that lend themselves to a slideshow, ...like your typical wedding slideshow.
    Thanks so much in advance
    Robin

One possible service you could provide is to scan in people's photo albums, page by page or better yet have them remove and submit those photos in order and create a slideshow either in iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD (that's what I prefer) and add some music. I get better final image quality when creating the slideshow entirely in iDVD and it's easy to add titles and comments
(NOTE: if you import the photos using iPhoto or iDVD's media pane all of the file names/titles will be shown if you select the Show titles option. If you select the photo thumbnails in iPhoto and drag into the open iDVD slideshow organization window, you won't get all of the titles when the option is selected. Makes it easier to add just one or two titles without having to delete all the rest manually.)
A great, IMO, slideshow application that you can import into iDVD to burn is PhotoPresenter. I think it has better themes and transitions than iPhoto and will take both stills and video clips in the same show.

  • Premiere elements 11 on iMac, creating slideshow ?

Creating slideshow w/transition & music in Premiere Elements 11, photos become very granny, what is happening?

I think I have the most recent version of Quicktime.  I downloaded it yesterday and then bought the Pro edition.
When I go to Share/Computer I have the following choices:
Adobe Flash Video - use for posting on web pages
NOEG - Use for playback on this computer or burning to DVD
AVCHD - Use for exporting AVCHD
QuickTime - Use for email and playback on Mac
Image - use for exporting still image
Audio - use for esporing audio
Nothing equivilent to the PC choice of AVI - use for editing in a Premiere Elements project
I have shared to QuickTime and the quality I get is not nearly as good as the AVI on the PC.  Nor is it as good as the mp4 file I get when I share in iMovie 10.  I just like to edit in Premiere Elements.  And I will ditch the iMac when I can and download everythig to the PC in the future.  Suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Creating slideshows with FCE

    Hello everybody
In this thread I'm not really seeking resolve to a problem but, more to the tune of,
" What is lacking or missing ? " , Please let me explain, For over a year now I have been creating slideshows from stills. I cant really recall the very first app I used but, I graduated to Photo to Movie before to long. PTM did a good job but, yet something was missing to satisfy my taste so. I ran out and bought FCE and, have now been creating exclusively with FCE.
Now I'm creating all my shows using PSD files coupled with motion graphics, overlays, lower thirds so forth and so on... I have create some rather impressive shows that have amazed those who have seen them to this point. Yet, I feel I have not fully satisfied my creativity.
I have googled slideshows till I'm blue in the face, seeking examples and or direction that may satisfy
my creativity. Every site I have seen that creates these shows, create them in my opinion, a very generic way....
I have yet to use any form of plug-ins, I have only been using the filters and effects in FCE, maybe that is what I'm lacking but, plug-ins really pertain to actual video , not stills ...
The direction I'm taking this thread and, the questions I have are.
What have some of you done for dressing up slideshows ?
What other apps may you have used in creating ?
What plug-ins if any have you used ?
If you know of a site that has awesome examples could you please post a link ?
Thank you all in advance for any and all help you may offer ....

_Currently I’m working on a project where 9 stills are dropped onto the screen like cards thrown across the table, each still has an independent pan._
Thats an awesome idea really, I just created a title similar to yours . I used it to introduce the family
    I'm creating the slideshow for.
_Photo To Movie type apps will do anything like that._
PTM is a good app, it's really geared up for simplicity. When I first started with PTM , I bought it with the intension of importing into FCE. However, after learning how to work with stills in FCE, there really wasn't a need for PTM. If PTM was capable of adding motion graphics as backgrounds, I would have a lot more use for it. The lack of this capability forces you to export in an animation .mov , rather than .DV NTSC , this is a big drawback. Even if I wanted to use PTM just to set my stills and, add my motion, the rendering and, re-rendering in FCE just is not worth the haste.
_I have found my best slide shows are a combination of music that really fits the theme and a good Ken Burns effect. Music moves the soul._
This is very true, I have taken it a step above this and, have started adding sound effects to my transitions, not to all of them, but to a selected few. I personally feel that adding sound effect to al of them, would be to much. The hard part for me on this is , finding just the right sound effect. I need to start toying more with Garage Band and, see if I can just create the needed sounds.
_I think the main problem is one of all artists. While I am creating it, it is my best work ever. When it is viewed by other people, they are always floored. But if I watch it a day later, it looks like a piece of poo, there was always something I could have done better or a certain something was missing._
This is all very true, I face that problem with everything I have created. Seems everyone I create I learn yet another trick of the trade and saying , " This is going to be awesome, my best yet ". Completion day comes I burn to DVD, then I nit pick it to death.
I'm very artistic and creative by nature, I know I have always been my own worst critic. If one was to ask me today how I feel, about my progress in my work. I would have to say I feel I'm about 10% of where I would like to be.

  • IPhoto 9.0 won't create Slideshow after 10.6.4 OS update

After the 10.6.4 OS update last week, iPhoto will not create a Slideshow. None of the photos selected show up, although the bar at the bottom shows the number of photos. None of the slideshow controls are active either.
Also, a previously generated slide show has now disappeared.
Luckily, we have several other Macs still running 10.5 in our office and I can work with those boxes, but this is a bit frustrating, since I was trying to generate a slideshow on a deadline project!

First try deletingiPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder , launch iPhoto and try again. It's amazing how many issues have been fixed by recreating the preference file. It's not 100% but helps in many seemingly unrelated situations.
