Frustrated!  Reconnecting files.

I am Sooooo frustrated and I'm hoping this is going to be fixable.  I am not expecting a quick fix, but a fix none the less.
I am trying to reconnect files.  I'm afraid I may have deleted the original files in error due to my lack of know how with
Adobe Elements.  I have version 8.0  The pictures are in my organizer with the little question mark.  However, I have done the
reconnecting proceedures but have been unsucessful in finding them.  Is there a way to save the files that are question marked in
my organizer?  I hope this makes sense.  I feel like I've searched to the end of the internet and cannot find the answer I need.

If you deleted the original files from your hard drive, I am afraid you are out of luck.
In order to do a reconnect, the files have to still be on your drive somewhere.

  • PSE 7 reconnect file bug?

I have copied the following from a 2008 message which appears to address my problem, but I cannot figure out how to get to the advised thread. I tried searching on the apparent title words, but the result was always this same message.
COPIED FROM 19 OCT 2008 MESSAGE FROM JOHN ELLIS:
"If you reconnect a file and get the message <old file> was not connected to <new file> or The file already exists in the catalog, then youve stumbled over a PSE bug for which there are workarounds.   See this thread:<br /><br /><a href="/webx?14@@.59b66777/5">John Rolfe Ellis, "Cannot Reconnect; File already exists" #6, 17 Sep 2008 2:49 pm</a><br /><br"
My husband put a new, larger hard drive into my computer and transferred all my files to the new one which is now the master C: drive. I have tried and tried to reconnect my files, individually and as a group, but I always receive the error message listed below in John Ellis's message. Has anything been done to correct this bug, if that's what it is? I cannot simply move everything back to the old F: drive, because now there are new photos mixed in and I've reorganized the folders. I can find the pictures manually, but can't get the program to accept my choices. I'm really beginning to regret spending the money to upgrade to PSE 7, especially as the program crashes or freezes up, too, but I'll deal with one problem at a time! BTW, I'm usiing Windows XP, service pack 3.
    Thanks for any help possible.

    Kathy,
Hmm, the output is still truncated.  I've attached an example of what it should look like below -- after "PSE Volume Table" should be many lines.
    1. Did you reply via email, or did you reply by coming back to the forum in your Web browser?  (You need to do the latter -- email replies don't always work.)
    2. In the Notepad that "psedbtool" popped up with the contents of "output.log", is it possible that some of the output wasn't showing (scrolled out of view)?  Do Edit > Select All, Edit > Copy, and then paste.
Here's what it should look like:

  • Problems trying to reconnect files in PE10 organizer

I have PE10 on a Windows 7 computer.  I have a library of 11,000 images.  Somehow last weekend, the Catalog converted the drive letter on all the paths of all the image files to the wrong letter.  Otherwise, the paths and filenames are fine.
So I'm trying to Reconnect files.  Being cautious, I am starting with selecting a few files and doing File-->Reconnect-->Missing File.  However, it doesn't work.  I've done about 10-15 groups at this point. It starts a laborious search thru my directory files.  About 25-30% of the time, PE10 fails.  I get a pop-up error dialog that says "Elements 10 Organizer has stopped working." with only one button that says "Close Program".  When it doesn't fail, it goes to the end of the search (I presume), and then pops up the window to manually search for a file.  So it fails to find the right file(s), but in the manual window I can easily find the right file and it reconnects right away.
I am reluctant to try File-->Reconnect-->All Missing Files.  Reason: On the third group I did above, I got cocky and tried to do 1000 files at once.  That was the first time it bombed, and it trashed the assigned dates on some of my files.
So this is a nightmare.  I could manually reconnect, but I have 11,000 files in 100's of folders - it would take a long time.  How can I get Reconnect to work properly?
I don't have a backup that is recent enough to just do a restore.
    Thank you,
    Bill

After conversion, things match.  So the drive letters in the catalog database are correct (except the C: drive, but that doesn't matter here.)  Here are the contents of my volume_table:
    id
    description
    serial
    drive_path_if_builtin
    type
    104
    C:
    2765733514
    C:
    builtin_drive
    80453
    P:
    3969101216
    P:
    builtin_drive
    184869
    E:
    680486029
    E:
    builtin_drive
    420438
    database relative
    amoc:database_relative_volume
    database_relative_drive
And here are the volume_id entries in my media_table:
    volume_id
    count(volume_id)
    80453
    10302
    184869
    1559
These numbers are about right.  I have about 11,800 images.  When my failure occured, they all had the bogus "P:" in their pathnames.  Since then I've reconnected about 1500 files to the E: drive.
So at this point I'm thinking I'll try your idea of remapping my E: drive to P: in Windows.  But I'll wait until you respond, in case you have a better idea.
    Thanks again,
    Bill

  • How to reconnect files that I can't find on my computer now?

When I got onto my computer and went to Final Cut Express, a couple of my files had apparently gone offline and whilst I know how to fix that I don't know how to reconnect files that I for some reason can't find in the same file, on my computer, that they just were in. I was able to reconnect 2 of the 3 files that were offline but the third I am having trouble with. I did not delete it (it's a sound clip) (and I know I didn't because I looked in my trash) and it's neither on my desktop or the file for this project like it normally would be and I'm wondering if Final Cut moved it or if its hidden or something. I did also search my computer and couldn't find it.
This is a project I am working on that needs to be turned in tomorrow (which was totally realistic until I decided to check on it once more) and now I think I can get an extension until Thursday, so I would GREATLY appreciate any helpful tips or advice anyone can give!
    Thanks so much!
    Sarah N.

    Hello Sarah,
FCE should not delete anything from your computer as it deals only with file paths rather than the real media files.
If this audio file is not anywhere to be found on your computer then you will have to get another one if possible.
Did you move any files using the Finder the FCE relied on?
The only time I have heard of files going missing like this is when they are bounced from FCE to Sound Track or Motion.
If you did not do this then it's a mystery???

  • Problems with copying & reconnecting files in a Stmp project

    Hi everyone.
I want to copy files from a project (that I'm currently working on) to a new drive and reconnect them.
But I'm running into problems. I cannot select 'reconnect files".
The situation & history (Sorry for the length):
From FCP, the editor did a 'Send to STP Multitrack Project' with Base layer video + metadata.
The files were written to an external drive, that is now connected to my computer.
When I started the projekt on my computer, I first copied the .stmp file + 'Media' & 'Render files" to the MacinthoshHD, the only internal drive I had.
I started working on the project, and after a couple of days, the system started to give 'disk limit' - messages. Clearly because of the 1-disk situation.
So today I bought another internal drive. I was expecting trouble when copying and reconnecting files, and I was right.. What I did:
I copied all files from the MacHD to the new drive, and opened the stmp file from there.
First I noticed that the Videotrack in STP was still playing from the external drive
I managed to copy it to the new drive, and 'relocate' it.
Just when I thought all troubles were over, the 'limit' messages showed up again.
Reason: It appeared that the paths to all media files were still the 'old' ones, pointing to the MacintoshHD, and even a couple to the external drive..
Then, I followed the instructions on 'Reconnecting Media Files' in the STP manual,
but 'reconnect' is greyed out in the menu. Probably because the project thinks nothing needs to be reconnected.
    So what to do?
What I can think of, is renaming the source map on the Macintosh HD
STP will then likely ask: Where is...? And I can point to the new location..
But this solution is tricky.. It will 'destroy' the original paths. And, will STP really give me a chance to restore all fades, files, and so on?
I hope someone can help me out..
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan

STP actually creates and places files in more places than we realize. Look in the temporary files folder; in another that's been showing up as Soundtrack Pro Media (different than the edited media folder), and back in Capture Scratch, Audio Renders and Render files. We've just learned that what we're looking for isn't always where we think it should be. And we use mostly an internal raid and then a detached firewire 800 raid which we pull off and use to work remotely on the same project. We have to make sure everything we need for the project has been mirrored onto the external raid. It's been much more challenging in STP3 than it was in STP2

  • Can not reconnect files

Some how my system updated itself to 10.4.11.
Now i have nothing but problems.
Besides my fce issues, my itunes library has been deleted. Anyway some of my files were in that library. When i try to reconnect the items in the FCE browser to back up files on other drives i get a file error or unknown error msg. I am running FCE 3.0.
This is just crazy how nothing apple does is backward compatible. How would people like it if the updates to atm machines were not backward compatible.
so now the project i was working on is in limbo until i can get this fixed. Please don't tell me that i have to upgrade to FCE 4. And no my itunes library with over 100 purchased tracks was not backed up.
    Oh Brother!!!!!!

Please don't tell me that i have to upgrade to FCE 4.
I won't say anything about what you don't want to know.
I will say that FCE can reconnect files.
I have no idea why your iTunes Library is in trouble. There's no way FCE can reconnect at the moment until it's fixed.
That's best asked in the iTunes forum. They should be able to help.

  • Help with Reconnecting Files

Over this past weekend I was moving, via Relocate Masters, large numbers of images from managed status on my MacBook Pro to referenced status on an external drive (an Air Disk, to be precise). This had gone fine for thousands of images, but Sunday night I returned to the computer to find that it was completely locked up in mid-Relocate, and seemed to have been locked up for a while. I'm not sure what happened, but it seemed bad -- I couldn't get to the Force Quit dialog, or anywhere else. I powered down by holding in the power button.
Upon resurrecting things, Aperture would not open the library. Long story shorter, I rebuilt the database and was then able to see the library contents again. But then I noticed that many files were "offline." Digging further, and using the Manage Referenced Files box, I discovered that some 3500 files need to be reconnected.
The Reconnect All button did a little bit of magic for me, but now I've gotten to a point where using Reconnect All only reconnects one file at a time. I was renaming files as I Relocated Masters, and my fear is that this is what has caused the disconnect. *So first,* can anyone tell me that this is what has caused the problem (the problem being my apparent need to now reconnect 3400 files, one-by-one)?
*Second, and more importantly to me, do I have any recourse beyond reconnecting one-by-one?* Again, the problem seems to me to be that the library file expects a file named image.jpg (or whatever), because the change of the file name to greatimage.jpg that occurred during Relocation did not get written to the library file.
Many thanks for all help and suggestions.

I hope someone else can join in with a definitive answer to your problem, but I don't believe you will be happy using the configuration you are attempting to set up.
Having Aperture access your images via wireless is going to be very very slow, and any connection problems will be very frustrating. I have even abandoned the idea of using wireless backup of image files because it so slow.
Perhaps someone can help with your immediate problem, but I would strongly suggest you find a way to store your referenced files locally (a firewire drive would be ideal).
Thanks. I certainly appreciate your thought, and before trying it myself, my instinct was the same as yours. That said, until the present problem cropped up, I have to say it has been quite a good solution. My network is 802.11n, and I've noticed no real lag in accessing the files or otherwise using Aperture with a library stored as this is.
But yes, I hope someone is able to help me get these 3400-some files reconnected short of one-by-one.
    Thank you for your comments.

  • PSE 9 Organizer crashes - can't reconnect files

I have thousands of carefully organized images in my organizer. I moved the files (no I didn't do this with the software as I didn't know that was an option . . i've moved files countless times in the past with no issue).  With this move, my catalog is frozen.  I can reconnect many of the files.  But on random files, the catalog freezes and will not reconnect.  I have to restart and try again (which generally does not work).  I tried moving the photos back and starting over, but that has not solved the problem. The catalog and software is now largely useless and I'm extremely frustrated.  Is there any fix for this that I have missed?  It is not possible to reload all of the images and start over.  thanks for any help.

    Hi,
Yes. The best way is to move files from within Organizer. But now that they have gone missing, the only thing to do is to reconnect them in small batches say one folder at a time.
    How much media is there?
    Thanks

  • Disconnecting and Reconnecting files in different formats

    Hi All
Me again - I did something incredably stupid. And I am ashamed to admit it. I installed a new harddrive and accidently deleted all my media files for my 75 minute film.
I now have the job of reconnecting all the clips, but I want to select PAL Anamorphic to get the tapes back into widescreen (Shot on HDCAM in widescreen before dubbed to MiniDV) I have captured a whole tape to test how well the files reconnect (have a few naming issues).
When I reconnect the clip it doesn't show in the canvass as widescreen even though it does in the viewer - Is this to do with the clip in timelines original setting?
Also I seem to keep failing miserably to attemp to disconnect media that I have collected - I keep then having to copying them out of the file. How to I disconnect a clip in FCP - Simple questions I know, but would be a lot of help.
Please, oh please help me! I am a man on the brink!

Highlight your sequence and cmd-0 (zero).
Your sequence is still set from your previously non-anamorphic edit.
Each clip, in the motion tab needs to be adjusted. In the distort section, you'll adjust the aspect ratio. I can't exactly remember what it should be, but it will be 33, -33, or 0. Try them and see.
I'd just adjust the first clip then paste attributes to the rest.

Mostr f my photos have a question mark in the top left hand corner.  When I go to <file> and click on reconnect the missing files are searched for and found but the reconnect button is not active. What can I do.  I m unable to edit these photos.

What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
It sounds like you are in the Elements Organizer that came with your version of Premiere Elements.
That ? in the top left corner of the thumbnail indicates a file that is no longer in the hard drive save location as it was
when a copy of the file was included in the Elements Organizer.
    1. Do you know that the file(s) still exist? Could you have moved, deleted, or renamed file/folder involved? Can you go
to the hard drive save location for the file and actually find it there?
If you are working with Photoshop Elements instead of Premiere Elements, you have posted in the wrong forum. In that case, please post your thread in the Adobe Photoshop Elements Forum or wait for a moderator to see your thread here and move it from here to there.

  • Can't reconnect files from my external HD

I just installed my new external HD (OS Extended Journal) and moved the files in my project there.
I deleted the old files on the internal HD.
When I open my project all files are offline (of course) so I reconnect them in the browser. The files are found but are still offline in my project (clips, images and sound).
I don't now what I am doing wrong when reconnecting.

Select everything in the browser, including the sequences, and run reconnect. It's generally not a good idea to move media around in mid-project.

  • Reconnecting files moved to same path on different volume

I have Photoshop Elements 10 running on Windows Vista. Most of my photos were stored on a network drive (\\mybookworld) which was mapped as drive X:\ . Recently I upgraded my network storage, mapped drive X:\ to the new drive (\\mybooklive), and disposed of the old drive. A quick check suggested that all photos were found OK.
However, it would appear that I have not been as clever as I thought. I have now noticed that a number of the photos in my Photoshop catalog have pathnames beginning with \\mybookworld, rather than X:\. This probably arose because the drive mapping occasionally disappeared, and I had to access the drive via its network path.
I can reconnect the disconnected photos individually, but the Reconnect dialog does not remember the location of the previous successful reconnect, meaning that I have to manually navigate to X:\ each time. There are too many disconnected files for it to be feasible to do this manually.
Is there a way to globally replace the string \\mybookworld with X:\ in my catalog? Would upgrading to PSE 11 make this task easier?
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can render.
    Cheers,
    Tim.

tim.pattison wrote:.Is there a way to globally replace the string \\mybookworld with X:\ in my catalog? Would upgrading to PSE 11 make this task easier?
    Tim.
The only global way to replace the string would be to edit the sqlite database (catalog.pse10db) with an sql management software and a special query. If you are ready to try this route, there have been details posts about the process, with queries devised by Photodrawken in particular.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1052041
In my tests, PSE11 is smarter in remembering the path for the search. I would begin by installing the trial version of PSE11 and convert the catalog. For the conversion it does not matter if you have missing files. Then try the PSE11 reconnect version and see if that works better for you.

  • Bug report: Crash when reconnecting files and Suggestion

I installed PSE 10.0 and my files had moved from D: to C:. I attempted the Reconnect Missing Files, and the program would consistently crash. It did however connect files before crashing, so I was able to keep restarting and getting the job done. I have over 25K files scattering across various folders. Please fix this problem.
    Suggestions:
    1. In the manual reconnect, PLEASE place the full path in the path column, allowing me to really sort by path.
    2. Do NOT reset the listbox when I connect a file. This really slows the process down. Please attempt to leave it in the same relative position.
    3. In the files view, please allow a drop with the same folder name. A confirmation would be OK (with a don't ask again, please).
Thanks for the great product, I hope these help keep the quality high.

yes. i repaired disk and diskwarriored it too. something seems off with my external lacie drive. when the .stmp reconnects to the media on my lacie it crashes. when it reconnects to the media while on my internal g5 drive its fine. weird. thanks for the suggestion.

  • How do I reconnect files referencing my iPhoto library?

Hi, I have a bunch of files that I've imported from iPhoto but Aperture is saying are offline.  I know I have to reconnect them to the masters in the iPhoto library, but when I try, using the Locate Referenced File command, the "iPhoto Library" at the bottom pane doesn't show me the folder structure to locate the file.  i.e. iPhoto Library > Masters > etc. > etc.
How can I reconnect images that are referening my iPhoto Library?
    Thanks!!
    Sal.

iPhoto stores pictures in a combined package file. To archive part of your library, you would have to select the photos and export them.

  • Can't reconnect files after move to D/drive

I'm using PSE 3.2.  I wanted to create more space on my C: drive so I moved all my photos to my D: drive but have been unable to reconnect my photos on either drive.  I've reconfigured the program to look in the D drive using the preferences menu. I've even moved all the photos back to the C: drive and tried it back from scratch. When I try to reconnect the photos using the browse function, the program crashes.  I'm wondering if I install a more recent version of PSE or even a paid version like Adobe photoshop elements 9...will this enable me to correct the problem?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    First question - to clarify
Do you have the FREE Photoshop Album or did you PAY to purchase Photoshop Elements ?
Next comments are relevant if you have a paid purchase Photoshop Elements version 3  __
It has been a long time since I moved files under PSE verison 3. I am not sure what is the best solution for you because of the limitations/inconveniences of 3 (v3 was the first version to have the Organizer). More discussion is probably beneficial after you review my comments and also those of DJ Paige.
Here are some specific recollections for PSE 3:
1 - The PSE Reconnect command can (will) crash if there is any error (inconsistency) in your configuration of hardware known to Windows. I suspect that it can even be factors like a disk that is shared across your network drive which is not accessible at the time.    I think it can crash even if you don't have any needed photos on that disk drive: Reconnect expects that it may find photo files on disks unknown to the PSE Catalog, so I think it searches everywhere.
2 - Stacks and Version Sets don't all move when you do the moves from 3.2 PSE (later versions they do).
-- For Stacks, you should be able to do an Expand All Stacks command before doing the moving with PSE in order to have the Stacks moved.
-- For Version Sets, I think that you will need to move each of the photos of the version set individually..
    Other General comments:
-- If that D drive is an external hard drive, it is very important for PSE 5 (and earlier including v 3) that this external drive always be assigned the same drive letter by Windows.
-- If you plan to upgrade your version of PSE, you will need to have a very clean (error free) PSE Catalog
